Name: Anataela Kalyssa Harte Nickname: Ana Age: Pre-teen DNA: Chameleon Talents: Art, violin Skills: Color-change/camoflauge *Anataela is learning to consciously control her color-changing abilities for camoflauge purposes including imitating patterns and the illusion of textures. However, her color change is also triggered by emotional responses, social needs and environmental reactions. These are sometimes conscious changes and sometimes happen all on their own. Personality: Ana is the epitome of "girly girl". She adores the color pink and the majority of her wardrobe is made up of various frilly, lacy dresses. She abhors wearing pants of any sort. Tea-parties, ponies and princesses are the order of the day for this little chameleon. Despite the fact that her life was disrupted and she found herself living in another home with another mother, Ana has proven remarkably resilient and her cheerful nature appears to have remained untouched, though she sometimes struggles with feelings of abandonement and vulnerability. She is sweet, kind, and eager to please, desperate to prove herself to anybody who will pay attention. She does have a tendency to get pretty self-absorbed however and living with Vienne will probably make that worse. Sure, as far as the chameleon is concerned, the whole world revolves around her. But she's just so darn nice about it.

-South American Amphitere-name: Duvrush nickname: "Rush" Personality: Rush is sort of an odd duck. He's very playful and loves to jump out at people from dark corners. He also loves to "sing" and has an uncanny ability to mimic almost any birdcall. He loves it when Ana grooms him and he enjoys grooming her back, coming through her hair with his teeth. He favors the "rainbow stones", the prismatic type of crystal that hangs on chandeliers, because of the pretty rainbows they throw. He's also very partial to sapphires and rubies. Rush seems to be a very good-natured dragon and he and Ana appear to adore each other. More to come.

Name: Vivienne Harte Nickname: Vienne Age: 24 Occupation: Heiress Personality: Self-absorbed and spoiled, Vienne hasn't got the first idea what to do with a little girl. She is supremely confident, graceful in all she does and moves with ease through her own social circles. Rubbing elbows with people below her social station tends to make her somewhat uncomfortable. Clever and calculating, she does her part as the "face" of the family business very well. Beneath her flawless veneer, though, is a truly kind-hearted girl. Prone to secret vulnerabilities and unlikely to ever have biological children of her own, raising Ana will likely prove beneficial to them both. Past: Vienne grew up in a traditionally wealthy, elitist family. They were what is termed "old money" and the Harte name was very well known. She attended an all girl boarding school, followed by finishing school and her coming out party was the biggest the social scene had seen in a very long time. People still talk about it. The youngest of three, she was coddled and pampered her whole life, never having to do a day's work. However, being an heiress to the Harte fortune brings it's own unique challenges. The Harte dynasty has it's fingers in many public pies, primarily import and export. But their real money comes from black-market pharmaceuticals of a questionable nature. They also secretly fund a research facility focused on the Solanum virus. These are the pieces of information that were used to black-mail Vienne into adopting Anataela. She was deemed more appropriate than her two older brothers.

Quote: Chameleons (family Chamaeleonidae) are squamates that belong to one of the best-known lizard families. The word is the Latinized form of the Ancient Greek χαμαιλέων (khamaileon), from χαμαί (khamai) "on the earth, on the ground" + λέων (leon) "lion", translating the Akkadian nēš qaqqari, "ground lion".[1] Quote: Chameleons have very long tongues (sometimes longer than their own body length) which they are capable of rapidly extending out of the mouth. The tongue extends out faster than human eyes can follow, at around 26 body lengths per second. The tongue hits the prey in about 30 thousandths of a second.[3] The tongue has a sticky tip on the end, which serves to catch prey items. The tongue's tip is a bulbous ball of muscle, and as it hits its prey, it rapidly forms a small suction cup. Once the tongue sticks to a prey item, it is drawn quickly back into the mouth, where the chameleon's strong jaws crush it and it is consumed. Even a small chameleon is capable of eating a large locust or mantis. Ultraviolet light is part of the visible spectrum for chameleons.[4] Chameleons exposed to ultraviolet light show increased social behavior and activity levels, are more inclined to bask and feed and are also more likely to reproduce as it has a positive effect on the pineal gland. Quote: HOW CHAMELEONS CHANGE COLORThere are more than 100 types of chameleons. Most change from brown to green and back. But some turn almost any color. A change can occur in 20 seconds! How does this color "magic" happen? Chameleons are born with special cells that have a color, or pigment, in them. These cells lie in layers under the chameleon's outer skin. They are called chromatophores (kro MAT uh fors). The top layers of chromatophores have red or yellow pigment. The lower layers have blue or white pigment. When these pigment cells change, the chameleon's skin color changes. Chromatophores change because they get a message from the brain. The message tells the cells to enlarge or to shrink. These actions cause cell pigments to mix—just like paint. A chemical called melanin (MEH la nuhn) also helps chameleons turn color. Melanin fibers can spread like spiderwebs through layers of pigment cells. Their presence causes skin to darken. WHY CHAMELEONS CHANGE COLORMany people think chameleons change color to blend in with their surroundings. Scientists disagree. Their studies show that light, temperature, and mood cause chameleons to change color. Sometimes changing color can make the chameleon more comfortable. Sometimes it helps the animal communicate with other chameleons. Light: Say a brown chameleon decides to rest in the sun. The chameleon's brain may tell the yellow cells in its skin to become larger than the blue cells below. Suddenly the chameleon turns green. This lighter color helps the skin reflect bright sunlight. Temperature: If a chameleon is cold, it might turn a darker color. Why? Because darker colors absorb more heat than light ones. Mood: Mood probably causes most color changes. For example, if a panther chameleon gets angry, red and yellow replace its normal color. A chemical called melanin rises toward the skin's surface, causing areas of the skin to darken. The animal's new look tells other chameleons, "I'm ready to fight!" When a male wants to attract a female, he will wear his most flashy colors, as if to say, "Hey baby, want to hang out?" One type of male chameleon will change from brown to purple and light blue. His eyelids may even turn yellow with green spots. What female chameleon wouldn't fall for such a handsome guy?
