_ Kinsley was born the eldest child to a middle-class family. A younger brother and younger sister both both passed away from illnesses at young ages. He was an only child again by the time he was eight. The family ran a modest industrial business on one side of the lake; the original Justicana Harbor was merely a house with a small factory nearby, churning out parts for tractors and steam powered ship engines.
_ He was introduced to the business as soon as he could talk and read. He showed promise, particularly in engineering and fine-tuning design details. He was still young when his father came into a large lump sum of money thanks to a bet. The older man was always adventurous in business, and he used that money to convert the family factory. Gone were its old steam parts; it now made motorized automobiles. Kinsley's engineering education turned to combustion engines and other newer methods of motion. As Kinsley grew, so did vehicle sales and the family's wealth. By his teens, he was taking an ever-increasing role in management and innovation.
_ The company was ready for its next big gamble at the onset of the Great War. His father jumped on a chance to design some of the tractor-based predecessors of tanks used in trench warfare. Kinsley himself was drafted and served mainly in engineering and driver-related roles. He rarely spoke of his experiences from that time, but they gave him first-hand experience driving and operating machines.
_ Post-war, he and his father used their newfound knowledge from tanks and armored vehicles to improve their non-military automobiles back home. The "Becker Car" gained a reputation for being sturdy and reliable. Better control and steering, surer traction, and other modern concepts fueled sales. Their popularity grew, along with the family fortunes. The once-modest Justicana Harbor expanded, and the family's single factory became several scattered throughout the area. Kinsley's skills for the machines turned into a genuine fondness for creating and operating them.
_ As the business expanded, and Kinsley took a greater hand and monetary stake, other gambles his father made didn't work out as well. Horse races, dog races, late nights at shady card dens: a few years after the War, the Becker patriarch was spending his part of the fortune nearly as fast as he made it and sometimes missed days of work on his vice. Seeing danger and opportunity, Kinsley purchased a majority of his father's stake in the company and put the older man on a limited budget, so as not to drain the family's success. The business continued to expand, now under his leadership. New technologies like radio and telephone made their way into the home at his encouragement.
_ Unfortunately, the gambling bug seemed to run in the family. While Kinsley had the restraint not to waste a month of profits in one night, his mother soon discovered he was accompanying his father to betting halls and racetracks. What she didn't know was that he'd been doing that since before the War. The back alleys and bars of the town were as familiar to him as their main factory.
_ Kinsley's mother was the family member most assured on the idea of an arranged marriage. It was a way to keep the Beckley family with the elite and out of the gutter: literally and metaphorically. Kinsley laughed it off at first. This wasn't the 1600's. Who arranged marriages in this era? But, after time, he began to consider that perhaps it wasn't the poorest decision, at least from a business standpoint. Attaching a notable name to the family fortune could open more doors and add clout where they had none. Maybe he could still go to the races once in a while, but he'd be in the upper-class sections with the "proper" people instead of the desperate rags of the gambling addicts. In the end, it was just another gamble. He agreed to the marriage concept with no idea of actual romance, but hopefully he and his spouse-to-be could be amicable enough to not hate each other.

                                                        ————————————————————————————————————

The low rumbling down the drive signaled the arrival of an automobile at the grand estate. If anyone was familiar with machinery, there was a distinct sound and a way the convertible jaunted along the route that marked it clearly as a Becker car. Of course, Kinsley knew those features better than anyone; he had designed some of the parts that made them. As held true on any other trip in his car, he sat in the driver's seat. Hiring a driver, now that was probably the proper thing a man of his family's wealth should have done. And there was in fact one for the family: back home, in case his parents needed to be taken anywhere and Father wasn't going to be behind the wheel. Kinsley himself had never used one. He much preferred the fun of controlling the machine himself. Besides, he didn't trust anyone to handle it as well as he did.

Curiosity gripped him as he approached the vast house. It was more or less a mystery to a lot of them in the area, locked away from public eye as it had been. Now, he was getting the privilege of watching the thing draw nearer through the lenses of his driving goggles. The view along the route was accented by fountains and other ornamentation designed to impress. “The outside looks maintained,” he said to himself as he approached the structure's facade. “but I wonder what the inside looks like.” He had actually been thinking of that for the last few days. There were enough rumors in Mount Elko about this estate's prowess to expect more modern living in it. But every time he pondered that, his imagination veered off and focused on this archaic arranged marriage deal. He was going along with it, maybe not the least willing participant, in fact. But it was such an old-fashioned idea. What if the the person behind it was, too? Forget modernity. He wouldn't be shocked if he found the place covered in outdated furniture or thick coats of dust.

There was a place for cars to be parked around one side, though Kinsley suspected a lot of the guests might be dropped off instead. Rather than letting any valet or groomsman park the vehicle for him, he found the spot himself. If that took the risk of traipsing through mostly-servant areas where transport was stored, then so be it. He pulled up the top for safety's sake, removed his goggles to set them atop his cap, and pulled his gloves off as he made his way back down the drive to the front door.

First impressions upon approaching and stepping through the entryway were not what he was expecting. His gaze fell on what looked to be new, clean furnishings: not a speck of dust in sight, either. “Ha. Good thing I didn't make a bet on that. I'd be out of some money.” If there were any cobweb-coated crannies to the estate, they were concealed from the eyes of the arriving guests. Guests? Was that the appropriate word for it? Most of them were only there of their own free will in the loosest sense of the term. As for Kinsley, he maintained a face of vague but calm curiosity about the whole thing. The prospect didn't exactly frighten him, particularly as he had not even found out who his intended was yet.

Taking in the scenery absorbed much of his attention until the entry began to fill. Before too long, the gathering grew. He greeted those who offered a good evening to him and introduced himself to anyone who did the same. Familiar faces received more appropriate greetings and perhaps a question on their health or their family. His tried to commit the faces to memory, not knowing how long they would all be sharing this space together.

Once the future spouses and their host's help were assembled, she made her own entrance down the staircase. Did he think he would have merely lost a bet on this estate and its mistress? More than that: any wager he made would have been obliterated. 'Pants, hmm? Very avant-garde.' The owner of Timbershire's vast estate pulled the look off. That kind of easy confidence could pull off just about anything, he supposed. Likely that was the point. Whatever the logic behind her fashion choice, it made a clear statement along with the measured ease in which she arrived: old-fashioned, she was not. Self-assured, she was. Whatever motives might lie behind these marriages, he suspected she was very good at keeping them to herself.

“Good evening and welcome to Timbershire Estate. I am Tsura Santora, your hostess for the duration of your stay, and as I’m sure you are aware, the organizer of your situation. It is a pleasure to meet you all.”

His own expression didn't much falter from that mild curiosity. “Kinsley Becker. Likewise, ma'am,” was his only offer for the moment when his turn came to respond. He contained any irony that wanted to creep into his tone. Any spare attention not on their host or situation observed the reactions of the others. There were a lot of new faces, and a lot of personalities to learn about in the coming days.

Earth Dragon
Name: Byron
Gender: Male
The disguise: Food procurer and inspector for castle/royal army
Age you appear: 24
True form: This here
Mortal woman: The naive farmer

Over the years, Byron came to be known as the workaholic of the dragon brothers. In his opinion, he had little choice. As the dragon overseeing the earth side of things, his element was so greatly affected by most of the others. It seemed there was always a farmland stripped by a windstorm, a wildfire-ravaged land to tend, a flooded region to recover... he felt like a lot of problems his worshipers faced could be solved by the other dragons handling themselves better. He usually claimed that being drawn into his brother's shenanigans was out of necessity, while in reality, they probably kept him from becoming the dragon equivalent of a grumpy old man.

He wasn't the first to agree to this idea of messing with mortal women. He was one of the last, in fact. There were more important things to tend to. But their oldest brother couldn't be the only responsible one, right? Someone had to watch their brothers as well to try and be sure they didn't cheat. He wasn't sure who his own target would be, at first. While his earth element meant he was comfortable enough behind stone walls or other constructs, but being a part of the petty upperclass struggles of the humans didn't appeal to him. Land wars and humans' so-called "progress" usually involved destroying or wrecking havoc on earth in the process. While forbidden to use their magic as part of this game, a lifetime devoted to soil and flora gave him a natural knack for anything involving dirt, plants, or the like, which led to finding human occupations related to food and other earth-sourced supplies. A good reputation (and perhaps some connections with his brothers, also worming their way into the kingdom's main players as part of the bet) led to his eventual position procuring, testing, and otherwise handling the influx of cooking materials for the royal family, and in turn, their army. The Naive Farmer, one of their suppliers, soon became his intended target for the dragons' little game. Someone who spent so much time around the dirt would surely be the easiest potential target for him, and it was easy enough to catch her bringing her supplies for the military or tending her market stall.

Vivek, Lightning Dragon: Unofficial "leader" of the group of brothers. Byron usually looks to him for overall decisions on what they do.

User Image
Erebus, Thunder Dragon: Vivek's twin and the brawn to his brain. Byron usually prefers the "brain" method of solving problems instead but isn't on bad terms with Erebus.

User Image
Sebastian, Fire Dragon: Definitely an instigator and a pester-er. One of the more energetic and outgoing of his brothers.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Kovum, Water Dragon: Byron considers him a little mischievous. There's no ill will between them, but he wishes this brother was a little more responsible.

User Image
Remember, Widowed Queen: Byron is under her employment. She has a reputation for being a fair ruler among the other workers. Not to be trusted around fruit or other valued objects.

User Image
Klara, Naive Farmer: Intended target for the "Game." Byron works with her on castle/military food stores business. Their first meeting consisted of him accidentally scaring her and receiving a cast iron strike on the head. Currently on good terms.

User Image
Eritreya, Experienced Thief: Not yet met.

User Image
Callindra, The Wary Healer: Not yet met.

User Image
Rylan, Faithful Knight: They've interacted here and there when food supplies were distributed, but their relationship is on neutral ground for now.

User Image
Theodore Indominus III, enemy king: They haven't met, but seeing as he and his brothers are tied to Remember's kingdom, preconceptions of Theodore are bad. Byron doesn't favor war and conquest in general due to the land damage it always causes.

The Fae
Name: Ela Innes
Gender: Female
Age: 135
Other Pictures: X X
Human you are bonded to: The Artist
Magic: Neutral magic - strongest in light and illusion techniques, also fond of using magic to make tangles or knots
Sexuality: Pansexual

Before the Blight, Ela would not have called herself the strongest of her kind, or thought herself a potential savior of anyone. She stayed out of others' lives unless interfering gave her a source of amusement, leaving run-ins with others of her kind to happenstance. The Fae reveled in flitting from one part of The Veil to the other, living however she liked and drawing friendships, conflict, or mischief as she saw fit. The Blight changed that. As the vivid lands of The Veil began withering away, she found her freedom restricted and favorite spots left desolate. The problem grew, and her assuredness began to waver. She even began seeking out other Fae, looking for answers or any form of familiarity. Her searches failed more times than they succeeded. By the time she was forced to flee to the pole, she made a resolution. She would help solve this problem, even if it meant working with other creatures and even defending one of these strange little "humans." Ela wanted to know what was causing The Blight. She wanted to understand the solutions hidden in the spell book. But most of all, she wanted The Blight gone.

Byron had spent the last few hours in split time. First was helping Klara patch up the scrapes from her recent fall. Nothing significant, even for something as fragile as a human, but to let his intended target for the game walk around with completely untended injuries would have been a foolish move. Cleaning them off and ensuring they were not in need or further care was the least he could do.

Second was handling the meal left by the queen, which turned out to be a success with neither him nor Klara. He had picked from it what he could. The sausage he was familiar enough with, and the spices enhanced it. The pasta was a peculiar texture, a bouncy and starchy one he wasn't accustomed to, though he still favored the spices used on them. The shrimp, he couldn't eat. Freshwater fish was fine for him, but those plump little things tasted too much of the ocean. In the end, he'd picked an opportune time to dispose of the leftovers in as nondescript manner as possible. It wasn't unusual for the castle to offer uneaten leftovers from meals to any of the poor who might be waiting out the back door. Some of them this evening would be feasting on a particularly rich meal of pasta and shrimp.

Third was spent in a much more solitary situation. As much as this game meant he should prioritize his time with Klara, there were points where she had to handle her carts, stable her animals, do things out of his area of the castle that would seem, well, peculiar if he accompanied her while meant to be working. He spent the time finishing up his stock-taking duties and putting the utensils and dishware from the meal away for cleanup by the appropriate castle servants. Once those were finished, it was time to tally up the store room counts. The castle itself was quiet, the funeral being held a distance away pulling many of the upperclass and generally putting the place into a quiet mood. Byron himself was not attending; such events were official acts of compassion from the upperclass, not something intended for those in the servant's quarters. For Byron, the quieter time was ideal to catch up on the day's lost work.

Byron started by relocating himself and his box of pomegranates and persimmons to the space that served as his office. It was not an impressive spot: little more than a small chamber set aside near the store rooms. It was mostly unadorned save a desk, a couple chairs, and shelves and baskets lined with parchments of varying age. Still, he had favored the space. While too small for a dragon form, the enclosed quarters reminded him of a protective cave. He had discovered that the castle kept records going back several years before his time here, too. They were practical when he first started, even the old ones, to gain research on how much of the castle's supplies he could plan for them to go through over time. Scrolls and parchment made for a meager horde, but they were nearly all his human form had to stash away. Surrounding himself with something, however trivial, provided enough sense of collection and posession to keep his dragon need to store goods satisfied. The stores of records remained under his watch, and even the dustiest and most outdated parchments were better organized than they had been before. The box containing fruit only made a more tempting addition to the stockpile. He stashed it behind his out of easy view to anyone else.

While he had the short time to himself, he was making use of it. He had a fresh parchment on the simple desk behind which he was seated, quill in his hand, scratching and scribbling the counts he'd noted for the day. Once again, he was enjoying this writing concept that was so much easier to accomplish in human form than dragon. He had just tallied the spice stores – there was still no answer for those missing boxes – when there was a knock on the door. It mildly startled him out of his own thoughts, and he put the quill down and glanced up from his work. “Come in.” The figure that appeared in the doorway was not one he expected, but it was one that was welcome. As had happened with the surprise of seeing Vivek in the kitchens, Byron had to resist a more honest expression coming across his human face, especially with the door wide open and no knowledge if anyone else might walk past. He contained himself and put on a pleasant, professional look for the moment. “Oh. Advisor Vivek: please come in. Sit, if you wish. If you don't mind shutting the door...”

His calculated expression didn't shift until the door was closed, and he knew there was full privacy. Then the professional smile shifted into one that, in human terms, could be deemed ironic. “I do hope you and the queen enjoyed your fruit, considering Her Grace's generous trade for her own meal.” He made a few final scribbles on the parchment, then looked up again minus the irony. “I admit that I hadn't been expecting to see you. I nearly gave myself up from the surprise; if you were aiming for the element of shock to force a forfeit, that was a well done effort. And that little human of yours nearly found a sinkhole opening beneath her feet. She's fortunate I'm not willing to lose so easily." Human-made insult aside, though, he found himself pleased to be with someone familiar...even if the face worn by that someone was not. "When did you arrive here?”

                                            Appearance (human form)
At 5' 1", Annie is a short and slight girl. Her wiry frame often conceals the muscle developed after decades of performing. Large amber-brown eyes are just darker than her very long, straw-blonde hair. Her nails and teeth (the front two in particular) are unusually strong, a gift from her Zodiac curse. She occasionally slips into a North Carolina accent, though time and travel have dulled it.

Her face is expressive, typically showing her mood when she's speaking or thinking. She carries herself with confidence, though she lacks formality or primness. Annie is the type to flop on furniture, not sit politely. She doesn't like showing fear or doubt, instead treating them as things to be ignored or pushed past. Oh, she can feel them alright, but letting others see that would be a weakness. Her speaking tone also matches her behavior: blunt and informal.

Stage outfits are usually form-fitting for visual impact and practicality. Behind the scenes, she throws on whatever she has clean, and her hair and clothes often look in disarray. Off-stage outfits usually consist of wispy slip dresses or other options that allow free movement. She's not a fan of pants or anything too constricting, with the occasional exception of small shorts under short dresses or skirts. Shoes are simple sandals, flats, or even entirely bare feet. The only well-kept accessories she owns are a leather pilot's helmet and matching pair of flight goggles. They appear to be from the 1940's or so. She can often be seen wearing them offstage and is more possessive of them than anything else she owns.

                                            Appearance (zodiac animal form)
Beige/fawn colored hooded rat. In her opinion, she makes a pretty cute one. She's grateful that the form isn't an agouti gray/brown. The lighter color means she usually isn't mistaken for a normal "wild" rat, though sometimes she complains that she couldn't be a more dignified beastie. She has no scruples transforming into rat form whenever it's useful or practical. The size and shape allow her to sneak around places easily without being caught, though it's hard to make off with anything of decent size without transforming back. She can transform involuntarily if someone makes her laugh too hard.

Annie grew up the middle child of three in North Carolina. Her father was a military man, killed in action while she was a child. Her memories of him were precious, but very limited. Her mother never remarried, and raising three children on her own took a financial toll. They moved into one of the poorer areas of town by the time Annie was in her teens, and she grew up working side jobs and chores around their area for spare money. She would occasionally shoplift or steal small items to help them along, though she tried to make sure her mother never caught on. While Annie joked she was going to marry rich and never have to work as an adult, her mother valued education and insisted all her children graduate high school. Annie was never the top student, but she learned quickly so long as she applied herself.

Annie's mother passed away when she was twenty, and she and her siblings tried to make their own ways as adults. It was rare she could find work that paid enough for a stable lifestyle on her own, and her occasional thievery continued into adulthood. When the grand-looking Cirque du Zodique rolled through town, she thought it a golden chance to swipe something valuable. With luck, the circus member she stole from would be out of town before they noticed anything gone. Unfortunately, she was caught. The performer was looking to retire and gave her a choice: get arrested, or take her place in the show. A job was a job, and Annie signed on. It wasn't until the full affects of the curse set in that she realized how she'd been duped.

At first, Annie fought tooth and nail against her new lifestyle. Escape attempts were frequent and determined for the first several years, and there were many times in this adjustment period where she refused to go on-stage at all. As time marched forward, though, she fought less against her fate. Visiting exotic locations eased her mind a little bit, and her meager trunk of belongings began accumulating trinkets and souvenirs from their trips. The skills and slight abilities given from her form were benefits, too. After more than half a century in the circus, she knew most acquaintances from her old life were likely dead. Attempts to escape had stopped decades back, and her insistence on finding a way out was almost never mentioned anymore. Some of the old resentment still boiled in her, but she generally treated complaints about their condition as something to endure. Annie no longer recognized the world outside. Even if she found a way to join it again, how would she fit into it?

Accustomed to caring for herself, she hates showing fear and sometimes appears like she lacks that trait altogether. She prefers to push through problems as if she were immune to their emotional effects.

                                            Impulsive
Thinking in the moment, rather than looking ahead, she can miss the big picture of situations or even her own actions.

She still can't shake the resentment of being forced into this permanent position without her full knowledge. But while she still longs for the normalcy of life outside the circus, she fears no longer understanding or being able to function out there.

                                            Climbing
She was able to do this even before the curse set in. Climbing trees and otherwise testing out strange spaces was a childhood hobby she could pursue even without money.

A lifetime of living day-by-day ensured that Annie learned to pick up on tasks and situations quickly. She usually tries to absorb at least a few key phrases when they pass through areas with different languages, and it's rare she can't give a retort or commentary in conversation.

Perhaps the zodiac curse aided this, but she grew up eating food that wasn't always new or in the best condition. As a result, her gut seems able to tolerate a lot. She even considered doing side show work in the circus, eating non-food items like lightbulbs. She never actually practiced or went through with it, though.

                                            Zodiac Blessing

                                            Physical improvements
The greatest difference has been her sense of balance, lending itself to skills like climbing and motion. They were greatly enhanced upon receiving the curse. Though she was always nimble, she wouldn't be half the tightrope walker she was without the curse. She also found her human-form nails and teeth more durable.

                                            Spacial awareness
After being cursed, Annie rarely seemed to get trapped or stuck anywhere unless the magic itself was serving as a tether. While she never sprouted whiskers in her human form (thank goodness), she is much better at telling what tight spots she can fit through safely, or where to walk in the dark without ramming into furniture.
