And I normally work on a 800x800 base.
Then crop as I need.
800x800 is a good basic size, it fits 90% of gaians screens (if you choose to use the whole 800x800 image.) I find I like the room to work, and I tend to crop images down for the completed version.
EXAMPLE: I work on a 800x800 base, as you can see here, and then I crop it down. Colored the background so you can see it! Normally I work on a white background (sometimes I color it to see image edges if they're to light. Then change it back once I know where everything is.)
