      The shop is, has been, on indefinite hiatus for some time. Mundane Egg is working on getting everyone their owed artwork regardless of RP requirements.

        ♦ Please do not ask for pet trades.

        ♦ Please do not resell pets.
        ♦ You can choose to give a pet you win to another person, but please do not trade pets. If you want to bid for someone else in an auction or enter in an event for someone else you need to declare your intentions when you do it.
        ♦ There is a limit of 3 pets per person, but it depends on RP. You can read more about it in the FAQ.
        ♦ Co-ownership of a pet is not allowed.
        ♦ Regarding the hosting of images you may either direct link the shop's images or host the images yourself. Be aware that if you direct link your images are subject to photobucket/imageshack's quality loss issues.
        ♦ There are some very light RP requirements for keeping a pet. Read on below.

        An owner may be leaving Gaia, the breedables forum, etc, and may wish to transfer ownership to another individual. In order to give a pet to another person the owner must PM the shop mule the account of the new owner. No refunds will be given for pet transfers.

        ♦ Please read all additional rules listed in individual sale, auction and event threads as well as the following rules.
        ♦ Please send all trades to the shop mule, City People.
        ♦ Please make sure that all offers during auctions are able to fit in one trade. That means the winning bid must contain 12 items or fewer.

        How long does it take for each stage to progress?
        Stages progress based on RP requirements being fulfilled. Please see the character stages/growth post for more info.

        How do I get my pet certed?
        If you've received your uncert artwork and thought up a name for your pet, post a cert request form in this thread and you will receive a cert!

        How many pets can I own?
        As stated in the rules, you may have 3 pets/characters total. You may have 2 of each kind. In other words, you can have 2 Book Children and 1 City Person, or visa versa.
        However, if you've been active in RP for 6 months and shown yourself capable of paying equal attention to the characters you already have then you can appeal to the staff to get another one! Repeat as often as you like.

        Can I return a pet?
        No, pets cannot be returned to the shop.

        Who did the art of my pet?
        If you look to the bottom right corner of the certs you may see a line of text saying "art by [username] for paper forest." If you only see "paper forest" then the art was done by Mundane Egg.

The world in which our story takes place.



      The world of the paper forest is a very small and very dark one. Literally. Contained within is only a single city, an endless forest and a very dark sky. A small sun and moon rise and fall over the city, allowing the city to experience a semi-twilight at the brightest of hours, but their light cannot reach the forest. It is a lifeless world without animals or humans. The paper forest is the birthplace of the Book Children, spirits of stories given a new life for an unknown purpose by a suspiciously absent creator. Their only friends in this strange and empty place are the City People, citizens of the Library City who spring forth into life from the shadows of its crooked streets.

        A place with a perpetual frost on the ground but never a full blanket of snow. It is always cold and always bare. The bark of the leafless trees in the forest is comprised of paper and writing, hence its name. The sky of this place is black, no stars and no moon but the trees themselves glow with an eerie light. The world is in neither night or day but suspended within a void. There is no life within the forest save the guardians. Here is where all Book Children come from, born on the edge where the forest and city meet. It is a forbidden place that cannot be entered once left and all must leave.

        As the name implies, the Library-City is filled with books. Many, many, many books. A sun and moon rise and fall over the city, but their light is impotent and ineffectual, so the city is in perpetual semi-darkness. The City itself has the look of a cathedral with great stone arches, carvings and high towers. There is no electricity and the streets are cobblestones lit by lanterns. It is surrounded by the forest and because the City People cannot enter or defile the forest it has grown upward instead of out. Flying buttresses and arches have become bridges, homes have been built around and between the books. The City runs on mechanical devices made by the City People, and the entire thing is primarily run by gears and weights. Although there are through-streets all the way to the very top of the City's towers there are also weight-controlled elevators to take citizens up and down the levels.

        In the Library-City books are treasures no matter how banal or uninteresting the subject matter. The City People take great care of the books in the City. To become a librarian is a huge honor and highly enviable position for which applicants must study for many years to obtain. Librarians and writers live alongside the richest politicians and merchants at the top of the city where they can look out at the endless forest.

Wherein we meet the characters of our tale!

      BOOK CHILDREN

      Creatures made by an unknown creator, awakening in the forest. Their bodies house the spirits of stories or books and they retain many of the characteristics of their book's subject or story. Book Children can be made from nonfiction stories about places or things (such as history books, geology books, nature guides) or more commonly from fictional stories (like novels, short stories and book series).

      Book Children can have up to 3 different art stages. To play as a Book Child you must first purchase artwork from the shop.

      CITY PEOPLE

      City People spend their entire lives within the City. They are excellent tinkerers and engineers, able to construct clockwork animals and amazing machines to help them with their daily lives. Though they form affectionate bonds and fall in love, they cannot reproduce. A new City Person appears within the City suddenly as if formed out of the very shadows themselves. Like the Book Children they do not know how exactly they came to be, but unlike the Book Children they do grow old and die. Only City People at the end of their life are allowed by the forest guardians to enter the forest.

      City People can have up to 2 different art stages. You can first purchase artwork and RP, or create and play a City Person and then get artwork for them later on.

        Your pet can have up to 3 stages, each of which comes with unique art. You get your 1st after purchasing the pet. To earn an upgrade to the next stage, you will need to collect 25 growth points.

        HOW TO GET POINTS
        In order to grow your pet you will need to RP. One completed RP equals 1 point. You must close out the RP and preferably mark it in the title with "FIN" (finished) to indicate it is completed. There is a length requirement - you need to have written at least 500 words in the RP for it to count. Your partner also needs to have written at least 500 words in it for them to receive a point.

        Participating in shop metaplot ORPs, CYOAS, or other events will automatically gain you 2 points. If you manage to stick around until the end, your closing post will get you 1 more point, meaning you end up with a total of 3 points for being a part of the ORP. Sometimes at the end of a shop event a staff member will give away an extra 5 points by putting everyone who finished the event in a list and using the RNG to pick a winner. In that case, the winner gains a total of 8 points for participating in the metaplot.

        PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER
        Every time you receive a growth point or a growth token make sure to keep a link to the post or thread where you obtained them. You should display these in your journal. Once you have all 25 growth points necessary you can post a growth request form in this thread and get new artwork drawn.

        commissions - semi/full customs
        The easiest way to get a pet is to simply make a quest and purchase art from a shop artist. Not all shop artists take commissions, but any that do will have threads located in this subforum. When a shop artist opens up for commissions an announcement will be made in the main thread.

        quest fairy - semi customs
        Another way to get a pet is to make a quest and get it approved! Then the quest fairy may come along and grant you a ~*free semi custom*~ character. How does the quest fairy choose? Though her methods are mysterious, they are probably based on:
          - thread regularness and positive energy <3
          - participation in shop metaplot events (perhaps using a meta-stamp!)



      isales eventsxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

        The shop will use flatsales, raffles, and other kinds of common B/C methods to sell or give away premade pets. These events are held a few times a year and usually contain 4 or more themed pets. They may be seasonal/holiday themed, or myths and legends, maybe fairy tales, maybe just a bunch of pets that all come from the same book. Pets for sale are contributed by artists in the shop and guest artists.
