Top Spying Techniques in the High Tech World of Mobile Soldiers.

1. GATHERING INTELLIGENCE

Assemble a file on the company when you're planning to pitch your service or product to a brand-new client. Stalk them--gently. Scour the company web site. Search for local and national news stories about the company. Start with his bio, then dig deeper.

In highlighting your commonalities, as Seth Godin puts it, you are sending the message: "People like us do stuff such as this." In other words, "We 'get' each other."

3. REFLECTING

Authentic experts in the PI (and secret agent) world use one technique to crushing spy on mobile phone effect: reflecting -- the skill of subtly copying someone's body language or facial expressions. Often, we do it unconsciously; it is built into our neurons. It is why yawns and laughter spread, and why babies mimic their parents' grins.

Interviewers and interrogators use reflecting to establish connection with defendants. And it can work the same for you: When you are negotiating or pitching, attempt harking back to your advantage's stance. It is a good hint you've set him at ease, if he begins to reflect yours back.

Mirroring says, "People like us do things such as this." And it can work even when your strength, in several ways, isn't actually in your tribe at all.

4. CONTROLLING DEFENSIVE BODY LANGUAGE

Traditional lie detection techniques are based on detecting signs of pressure. To seem more fair, command your anxiety indicators. You could be judged as less trustworthy if you're nervous going into a cocktail hour or a meeting.

Two things you can do to combat stress:

Know your subject, and understand it wellAssume a position of assurance

Anxiety can not be just camouflaged by excitement; it can melt stress away. And your energy could only be infectious.

5. INTERROGATING SOFTLY

As a PI, I can usually coax the truth from a grudging witness. You, as a budding business spy, can pivot this technique toward filling those awkward silences at board meeting or a stilted seminar cocktail hour.

I try and shoot one quail at a time, if I do find myself at a networking event. Perhaps she's the geeked-out one wearing an X-Files T shirt under her blazer. Decide one individual and make it your mission to discover something really interesting about them.

NARRATIVES LEAD TO ACTUAL CONVERSATION. REAL DIALOGUE RESULTS IN LINK.

A great interviewer understands the art of asking good questions. Instead of the old standards, like "What do you do?" try asking something sudden, like: "Tell me why you love your work." Stories lead to real dialog. Real dialog leads to link.

BE TRUE

If applied only as a tactic not one of this works. You may come across as insincere if you don't take a real personal interest in your "target." At the conclusion of the day, making a real link that is individual is worth more than simply developing a new customer. And when you are able to achieve both, well...you're a suitable operative.
