Cookie'd. It would imply some work to make nice avatars with these, but damn, I wouldn't mind the layering. They look beautiful, bring them on!
Just make them in lots of colors and don't make them expensive. Not the price of regular AI, anyway. Think of them as experimental items, not real-perfectly-perfected items. Maybe bundle them?

This actually isn't something I'm interested in. I like having realism with my item layering (hence why I've cookied other layer ideas), so having eyes that go over everything (including swords and hats of angled a certain way) just seems dumb to me.

I'd rather they work on other animated items that can be layered without problems.

HOLY s**t YES. existing animated items already have the issue of layering over or under things they probably shouldn't, but it's a challenge to avatar creators to work around that and come up with something that still looks appropriate. i think the eyes would be used much the same way - people would simply take care to avoid things that are supposed to cover up eyes but won't with the animated version. the ability to have some awesome-looking blinking (and kira-kira/desu sparkling XD) eyes would vastly outweight the inconvenience of working around the layering issue.
