There are definitely users I could pin-point in a second based off their avi. Avis were the main reason I joined Gaia and playing around with mine is one of the things I have the most fun with, so naturally other's avis tend to be what I notice first. Some people have unique/awesome names that grab me, or a nice sig or post style. For the most part it's avis.

Depends on the person, for people with a distinct avatar style it's generally the avatar, second comes post style if they have one, and then either name or sig depending on how much attention I happen to be paying rofl
