Hello, I have a quick question regarding kanji. In my Japanese class, we're covering chapter 6 of Tobira: A Gateway to Advanced Japanese, and the chapter reintroduces the vocabulary term 表れるas well as the new term 現れる. Now here's where my question comes in. Both of these read as あらわれる and have the same meaning "to appear", so what is the difference between the two and how do you know when to use which kanji?
あらわれる【現れるvs表れる】
具体的なものは「現れる」で表現します。
例えば、「怪獣が現れる」「入道雲が現れ始めた」などのように使われます。
対して、抽象的なものには「満面に喜びを表す」
「努力の結果が成績に表れる」など「表れる」を用います。
ちなみに、隠していたものが「あらわれる」場合は、「露れる」で、
「悪事が露れる」というように使いますが、現在は「現れる」で代用されることが多いようです。
Translation:
To express concrete/tangible things use 現れる.
For example, use for things like "The monster appeared." "Cumulonimbus clouds have begun to appear." etc
In regard to the other one, use it for abstract things, "Delight appears on the whole face."
"As a result of great effort, the grades improved. (lit: the grades appeared)" etc are how one uses 表れる.
By the way, for things that are have been hidden/concealed, you use "露れる" such as "the bad deed was revealed." However, as of now, "現れる" is being used widely as a substitution.
Hope this helps.
