1. Since Easter is slowly approaching, will we be seeing "HE" Robot Santa was forewarning us about at the Easter event? : O

2. What did you get for Valentine's day? Also, what is your favorite type of chocolate and what percentage and/or brand of chocolate do you prefer? I like to eat 86% Gardenelli dark chocolate.

3. On Tuesday through 7:00AM-10:00PM, are you or is anybody going to go to Ihop and get a free plate of their international house pancakes? I hope I will be able to go! : D

We talk to people through PM and other means either ways, the difference in ATA is that we try to make it to a certain time period. That's actually the tougher part because most of the time we're scrambling to push some features or fixes and we can't make it to ATA. sweatdrop

1. If Gaia's HQ doesn't give out tours, would it be possible to film an actual tour and post it up in the forums? We would be able to get a basic idea of how things work in HQ. ^^ That and it gives the users a chance to learn more about the staff.

2. I think that it would be possible to leave the thread for Ask the Admin unlocked for the rest of night. That way late night shift staff members could come in and answer any later questions of possible Gaians living all the way across the globe. We wouldn't be as in as much of rush to get our questions answered by you yourself every Monday at 5:00pm PST. What I'm trying to say is that once you leave, you can leave the thread open for other questions to be answered by late night shift staff members.

3. When will the Valentine's Day event start up and for how long? Does it have anything to do with the NPCs going into hiding?

4. What makes it so hard to get new sub-forums up? I'm sure that the coding for that wouldn't be too hard to do since all that we ask of is for more sub-forums (eg: Free Graphics sub-forum to pair off with the Art Freebies sub-forum, sub-forum for graphic artists, ect.).

5. Do you do anything in your free time other than working on Gaia? For instance, do the staff and you get together to play nerf gun or something like that?

We thought about that, but everyone get so caught up in that they do we'll never be able to keep the promise of giving enough responses. There are no night shift in Gaia HQ, btw.

The proposed time was one week I think.

It's not hard to get sub-forums up, though what's more important is that each forum need proper moderator support and people participation. In the near future I'm hoping that there would be better management for smaller groups to create areas that work more like sub-forums but work more like guilds.

I actually have a lot of other hobbies. Tonight I will finish building a desk. And I'm one of those guys anticipating the release of Starcraft 2 biggrin

I just finished up a short tour. Its awating a few edits and then well be going live so keep an eye out on the facebook and twitter pages as well as in the announcements!

And yea starcraft 2 is going to be awesome!

The circle is a picture of what my knees looked like after I was finished. xd

I wanted to do a little bit more, but I ran out of space. :p It was created at a local street painting festival. My art skills are horrible and pretty much limited to stick figures. So I didn't want to try anything complex, but I at least put it near one of the entrances, near a restaurant with outdoor seating. I know it caught the eye of a few people walking by and I even had one lady approach to ask me directly what Gaia was. User Image

Thinking of the anniversary, my question is about the video last week. A certain piece of editing gave me flashbacks to one of my past jobs. Is someone a fan of the FISH! video or were those 2 clips simply because of a love of the Pikes Place fish market itself?

Yes, a lot of game studios like us, though I don't think they have much budget for a lot of sponsorships right now because of the economy, I think we have to wait a little while. Seems to be more movie related sponsors coming along.

#3: WHY IS BRENNIVIN'S PROFILE NOT AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC? IS HE SUPER SECRETIVE OR SOMETHING? gonk

We're working hard on it. I'm hoping that we would have something to announce after spring time. Hope I can come back with the good news as early as possible. We've been talking to the companies for quite some time now, so we're really close.

A general suggestion is - stay on Gaia to earn Gaia gold. If you go with something that is not endorsed by Gaia, then it technically is considered as an exploit! :O

There are a few items that are awesome in the recent RIG. In particular was the one with the crazy color splash. Nobody knew how it got included as part of the RIG but we thought it's so awesome we gotta have it biggrin

Hey guys! Hope everyone has been having a wonderful evening up at Gaia.

I had a few questions on my mind guys:
~ Why doesn't Lanzer wear cash items? If someone cared enough to get him one, do you think he would wear it? xd

~ Now that we're stacking... has Gaia considered to start stacking for trades and items to be sold on the marketplace?

~ There was alot of CS updates this month... was it intentional to have it that way throughout this month alone?

~ I read the previous ATA and couldn't find the answer to this, so... What happened to the Valentine event? You guys had me all excited when I saw all the CS updates that were valentine related, and then I was a bit disappointed in the end result when I realised the event was kinda blown off. sweatdrop

I've just been too busy to dress up. Yes I know it's a poor excuse for the fact that I have no fashion sense. biggrin

Not immediately, as we still need to think through how to make the interface less confusing.

I think that our efforts are usually not intentional in any specific ways, we try to have updates of any sort as fast as possible, just depends on whether or not we're caught up in events, features, and what not.

The event itself was meant to be small to give us more time to work for the summer event. Sorry if there was an expectation of a bigger event taking place.

Hello, Lanzer! I hope you had a nice week. Sorry, but I don't watch much sports! >.<

Here are my questions:

1. For the Valentine's Day Event, did you plan it to be just mad libs or did you and the staff not have enough time to work more on it? I just want to know since I was so disappointed nothing more happened for Valentine's Day. I'm a little restless about this.

2. What future events are coming up on Gaia that you're planning to have?

3. Do you and the staff ever go shopping together for something or somethings? At least once? With both guys and women? If you did, what was it like?

4. Are we going to see more of Gino soon? What about Louie? And Liam's relationship with Sam? Or are we going to see at least a manga update?

5. What kind of dessert would you be if you were one?

6. Did you and the staff ever play lazer tag together? Or "lanzer" tag where everyone chases after you, Lanzer? XD

We did actually intended the valentine's event to be small, for a bigger summer event. Sorry we didn't clarify that earlier.

Summer event would be next, and we do plan to have a much better event with interesting gameplay.

Heh, we used to go shop at Costco as a group, buying snacks, drinks, and office supplies. biggrin

In terms of upcoming manga updates, I think everything is super secret right now, so I don't even know the details. :O

I love laser tag, though we had many different types of group games at Gaia and haven't had laser tag yet.

Now that Timmy is an Item, what’s next for EI reports? Will we see new characters? Will some sort of event happen that restores the nice, kind , loving, child Timmy to the plot some how?

Do you think other NPCs will become items too?

When will we pick up on the Gambino / Gino/ ex-gods plot?

When will we return to the Sam/Liam plot?

When will we have a plot with any other character?

Part of the fun will be planning on supporting your choice, so we'll see what's to come, but there isn't a Timmy replacement just yet.

Don't think so, unless enough people asked...

As for past plots, it's a tough one, I think we do have a lot of ideas on what to do next, that's always tough for us to balance between old and new stories.

I've noticed a lot of glitches and a lot of people talking about glitches. Most are inventory glitches. I myself bought some items and cannot sell them in the MP. I keep getting the not in owner location message. My question concerns this.... Do you think the new item layering system could be causing MP glitches? If so, are there plans to fix it?

~Also...you mentioned last week that NPCs aren't immortal....you're not gonna kill Gino are you? gonk

Any glitches related to MP are real bugs not related to layering, those should be fixed real quick. Any particular item you're referring to?

I dunno about killing off anyone in particular, but I'm sure that when we planned out NPC's on Gaia we don't plan on having everyone to be immortal.

Questions for anyone who can answer whee

-Any plans for extending Gaia's international reach? The ability to purchase Cash through mobiles has made it a lot easier, but are there any plans for getting Cash Cards a bit further abroad?

-We've seen a lot of developments in Gaia recently that are pushing us further into today's internet. Is there some sort of point you're working towards?

-Any plans for making Gaia more accessible on smart phones? The regular website is usable on touch-screens, but some elements are difficult to use (navigation bar). Are there plans to make a touch-friendly alternative?

We're close to having cards in Canada but in Europe and other countries are a lot tougher. sweatdrop

I think that the way we use the internet is changing fast. I used to open up my web browser and it was Yahoo instead of Google. Personal sites come and go, blogs aren't the way to keep up with friends anymore, and twitter's my way of getting the up to the second news about current events. Things are changing and that's kind of what's fun about being online. Gaia kind of reflect how we as creators think and act in a way. Otherwise, Gaia would be the same site as it was 7 years ago. There isn't a specific goal as in "more twitter like!", but one that should be community driven, social as in Gaia help Gaians make friends. If any ideas or tool work, we wanna look into it.

Yeah, just an hour ago I was on ATA and in a mobile meeting at the same time. We are considering whether it should be all about chatting, gaming, or as an avatar tool, etc. Much to discuss!

I would love to have a full blown 3D version of Gaia where characters are just as detailed and it'll run nice and quick without hardware acceleration. Though we're not there yet...

Alot happened in the last few days, certainly the sad news surrounding Gambino caused quite a stir. We're committed to follow up with many more storyline updates, but for now, let's see what everyone would like to share.

Yesterday's Oscar was also a bit of a letdown, as I was hoping that movies like DIstrict 9 and Avatar to have more recognition.

Hi everyone!

#1. I'm asking this on behalf of a thread full of very frustrated Gaians. 3 months of silence has been doing some damage. I understand that the AtA regulars are in different departments, but does anyone know whether or not the Flash devs are still looking into the fish tank glitches? We don't need details, we just want a "yes" or "no" about whether it's still a current project. Apparently no one in any thread has been given an answer, not even through PMs. *crosses fingers that someone knows what projects they're currently working on now that the hack-a-thon is over*

#2. Again on behalf of some very frustrated users within the one thread, it's amassed into a lot of people expressing disappointment in Gaia. With millions of users, I know it's hard to please everyone at once. I know it's nothing new to hear Gaians complain and threaten to take their real life $ elsewhere whenever anything goes wrong, but I'm referring to 3 months worth of almost 20 people (I've seen 18 "I'm fed up/boycotting" comments so far) all inside one thread. Because of the severity of our tank glitch in particular we were all promised refunds because of the large amounts of gold lost. For some reason some people's Help Tickets have been completely ignored or rejected. These people have not received any sort of explanation OR compensation at all. All of their tickets have remained unanswered for months. Two people have had their situations ignored since December! In frustration over the lack of customer support, at least one ignored Gaian (a newbie no less) has tried PMing multiple admin members to get reassurance that Gaia actually does care about their users. Unfortunately, for some reason all of her PMs have gone ignored as well, one of them for almost a month! As you can imagine, the thread has spawned disappointment and really bad first impressions. Can you guys please take this opportunity to say something to those Gaians who fall through the cracks and end up feeling incredibly ignored and let down by Gaia's staff?

#3. Last month in the AtA, someone asked this

It's finished! I'm working with DJHellsing to try to get it launched as soon as possible, I can't say exactly when that might be as even I don't know but all it needs is to go through our QA department and get approved by higher ups and it can be launched!

You might not know what projects they're working on, but I think at this point, any reassurance from any staff member that you guys actually care about the users will go a long way in helping to heal hurt feelings. Especially a response coming from a dev. I'd like to be able to go back to the people who have been ignored and show them at least some sort of public reassurance that Gaia cares.

Let there be no mistake we care, but I really don't have an answer for you ...maybe Lanzer knows more than I. Otherwise though we do have bug-a-thon events where we spend a couple of days only fixing bugs. We don't always get them all, but we usually are able to get a lot fixed. smile

For now send me a pm or links to the bugs you are referring and I'll get them entered into our bug reporting system, that way for sure you will know they are being tracked until someone can get to them.

Since PMs have failed our group lately, I'll just post the links here.

Is Gaia in any way affiliated with the company Yahoo? I’ve noticed that it says “yahoo” in several of the links I hover over around the site (GIM, the drop-down bar under a user, ect). If so, what companies will Gaia specifically affiliate itself with?

Does Gaia celebrate White Day, the holiday mostly celebrated in Asian countries which boys/girls return the gifts they’ve received on Valentine’s Day?

Would it be possible to find another way to earn Gaia Cash other than to either buy it or fill out offers? It doesn’t seem fair to the users who can’t buy the Gaia Cash because of financial problems/living outside of the US. Maybe users could be paid via Gaia Cash to do jobs such as moderating.

Great job on getting out an item contest for users~ Hopefully we’ll get some really good hat items out of this.

Gaia is affiliated with a few companies but not Yahoo. Specifically we're affiliated with Sony and Time Warner, that's why we got free movies in Cinema, though that's pretty much it, and those affiliations don't involve anything more than just the free content. The rest are usually sponsorships.

No we currently don't, I think mainly because of Gaia's origin from starting in the United States. Though we do want to support more user driven events so that users from other areas or cultures can celebrate what they love and enjoy.

The Gaia Cash currency do face a lot of challenge outside of the US, and we're definitely adding more ways but it takes time. We've given G Cash in the past and should do more in the future.

I just thought you should all know that you have done Gaia a great injustice. You have stripped it of its very essence. And we will persist in reminding you of this until you undo what should never have been done. Johnny K. Gambino cannot stay down.

Have you any idea of the emotional torment you managed to inflict upon some of us that day? The apparent efforts to drive in the point that "he's really dead this time, see, look at the blood and the cops" were...understandable, but very overdone. (And the day before the anniversary of the Gambino Support Thread? I believe I have the right to use the infamous refrain: Really, Gaia? Really?)

Know this: although I'm sure we all greatly respect and appreciate what you do for us, we will fight, now and forever, for the comeback our Johnny deserves.

By whatever means necessary.

For all those who support and love Gambino, I'm sorry for your loss.

A big part of what the Gaia storyline have for everyone is drama that involves incidents that drives love, hate, laughter, and sometimes, sadness. The decision over what happens next is one that we went through a lot of thought and debate, and I would say that many of us hold as much love towards Gambino as you do. Whether it's for creating more opportunities for other characters, or for creating events that will last in the hearts of Gaians, we're doing it all in hopes that the quality of the Gaia story will get better and better.

I can't promise or give hints on what is going to happen next, but please stay tuned on what's to come. We're dedicating a lot of our time in storyline this year, so that there should be more frequent updates.

Ok so Lanzer and Artist I have a few questions about the manga.

1. (well a few questions on Gambino) In the beginning of the manga submittings Mr. Gambino is dead, yes? Well why is he alive again after the first Valentines manga, is it because you guys are doing a Star Wars thing and telling us how he came to die or is it because it had something to do with Labtech X? Also in SS and in the zOMG! video there is a gunshot that is said to have killed Gambino, in the manga he dies from that vampire.

2. Why does Rufus say woof in the beginning of the manga, is it from him eatting dog food because the centaurs said no more fishing?

3. (a few on Ian) Ian has blonde hair, yes? Well why is it now brown, is it because his father now knows who he is and he figures blitching it is no use anymore? Also why isn't Ian like his brother, a vampire, or is he and he just doesn't know it yet?

4. Why does Labtach X wear a scarf to hide his face when in the manga right before the lab blows up we can kind of see his face?

5. Why was Santa not present last year and frozen in a block of ice?

6. I thought Jack made the Overseer and Sin show up so why does Mr. Gambino say right before he dies that he and Santa are missing?

I'll move right to the answer for Rufus, no I think Rufus just speaks many languages. That's also one of the first things Rufus said when you visit Barton Boutique back in 2003.

Ian's current hair color is still black because there's no reason for it to be blonde anymore. Would you like to see him blond?

Well there actually is a reason why his face was covered, but I'm not sure if we're diving into his background anytime soon.

Lanzer, it's Monday. But not just any Monday; it's the Monday after Johnny K. Gambino was murdered. I hope you can understand why I'm skipping the pleasantries and cutting right to the point:

1) When will we see the next update?

2) How could you let this happen?

3) Did you attend either of the funerals the GCD held?

4) I am holding you at least partially responsible. You said many things to make us believe this would never happen. Are you prepared to live with the guilt?

5) when will Johnny be returned to us? Not in a flashback, or some other way of him not really being back, but alive and well?

We're moving fast, but I can't give promises because of the changing work schedule of the art team. Though we are shooting for updates before the next event.

I'm sad about what happened, but it's part of the plot and I wouldn't want the plot to be one way or another because of my liking of Gambino. Meanwhile, I'm waiting as impatiently as many of you to see what is happening next.

We actually have a funeral of our own. We'll have photos to share with everyone.

The event came as a heartbreak even for me. Gambino is an icon for Gaia and I'm in grief of losing him also.

I've given what my interpretation at the time, personally Gambino means a lot to me. I'm sad over losing him also.

Okay, You must understand my sense of humor! A couple months ago, I was doing a show in a considerably small theater "in the Round" [for you theatre going people, you understand what that means]. Towards the end of one of our performances, somebody in the audience fainted! She was carried out by her husband right in the middle of one of our songs....An Ambulance came to try reviving her.
Afterward, I was the one consoling my fellow cast members, saying "Well, We Knocked 'em Dead guys!"
She turned out alright, but every time I made that joke, I got a forehead-smack/sigh and an "Oh God Justin..."

SO Now that you've read through my whole narrative, you probably understand one of the many facets of my sense of humor just a little better. T'was all in fun I swear! wink

Gaia is only a private company. Usually a company has to be much bigger to go IPO. My focus is just to keep building new features. Just don't think we're there yet. Not to mention that IPO will complicate things a lot.

1. What has been the hardest thing that you consider Gaia has done over the past few years in terms of bugs and new features?

2. My friend Princess-Orphelia and I would like to know if you’d mind us creating a thread with several other users. This thread would be like the stickies you post every Monday for AtA except that it’ll be something like “Ask the Users.” It could be up there for discussion if AtA is somehow cancled. :3 A few of the mods and you could even stop by and answer some questions in your free time. Would that be fine with you?

Well we had done a lot of things are are monumental, but have no changes to Gaian's daily lives. For example, we re-wrote the whole posting engine so that the forum and other features don't crumble under its own weight, and we also completely re-write how items are handled so that we eliminate the chances of item loss or item duplications and allow a lot of item related ideas to be written in the future. Many stuff are really big projects that are here to make our lives more safer, faster, and better. smile

The forums are here for you guys! So definitely it'll be great for anyone interested to have their own discussion threads.

I'm mostly positive, as most of my worries were about the bills that were passed in the previous administration that we might not be able to support down the road. Though to be honest I'm far from being savvy about this matter and I'm just happy that action is being taken.

I have a statement, and then some questions. I hope it's alright.

First, statement:
I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to you personally for my atrocious attitude and behavior a few weeks ago. I was way out of line, and it was inexcusable. I was completely caught up in my own agenda and didn't even stop to think about what I was doing and how it would hurt and offend everyone involved, especially you. You didn't deserve that at all. I know this doesn't even begin to make up for it, but it's all I can think to do except to continue to support this website that's devoured six years of my life. I'm truly sorry.

Now, questions.
1) We've been talking about lots of things in the Gambino Support Thread this past couple weeks. Some of my favorite theories have revolved around Johnny's unusual yet handy habit of cloning himself. If you were Gambino, how many clones would you need to make of yourself in order to feel comfortable? Where would you hide them?

2) Just how old are/were/are our favorite NPCs? Say, Edmund, Johnny, Sasha, and Meredith?

3) All about Gino: Has he heard about his father yet? Will he ever admit his undying love for Jasette and/or Lady Gaga? IS he Lady Gaga?

4) For everyone: Now that Meredith has become Alpha Girl ( heart ) and joined the ranks of the G-Team and The Masque as legendary Gaian heroes, one has to wonder what other heroes Gaia has to offer. What is your superhero name and special skill?

5) Timmy became an EI and Johnny gave us his family jewels treasure there's no way I can phrase that and not have it sound dirty. Will other NPCs be immortalized in item form? Do they have to "die" or reach the end of their usefulness in order for this to happen?

I start ATA every week to hear not just the good, but the negative comments when we deserve to hear it from all Gaians, so there's never a need to apologize for your words. It's valuable input for us and I certainly appreciate it.

If I am Gambino? Well if I'm him then I would be using everything at my disposal, but I'm not him, so I wouldn't know.

I don't have their bio handy, this one is probably better left for some of the story tellers

5) If Gino were to become a superhero again, would he choose a different identity than the Masque, because that hero was both he and his father combined? If so, what would his superhero name be?

It's okay, we are worried about everyone's feelings before and after the event, and so it is important for us to know when you're hurt and unhappy. We wish that there will be much more happy moments in the future. smile

The best part about working on Gaia is that I get to work with a lot of really smart and talented people that are smarter than I am. Also love the aspect about how members see Gaia as a place that made their lives better. That part does kind of make us feel like heroes. smile

Here are my questions this week:

1) Who writes plot, specifically?

2) How much deliberation goes into the plot structure? Do you ever get into serious debates or discussions about it?

3) Would you ever consider making G Pins like your IRL one available to the public? (To purchase?) I know there are many people who would be interested.

4) I noticed that on the convention schedule you have replaced gatherings with feedback sessions. Was this because Q&A at panels take too long? I am going to miss all of the fun games. I remember in 2007 when I got to play bingo with L0cke and everyone at Anime Expo! Are those times now gone?

((I'd also like to take a moment to advertise my Gambino-themed art contest, "Viva Gambino," to anyone who is interested -- i.e., the general, Gambi-loving public. With millions of gold in prizes, it's a contest after any Bino's heart! heart ))

The plot is a combination of many people's effort.

Yes, there are actually many heated debates, as many Gaians there are as to who should be focused and what should happen, many of us also have our preferences.

Always talked about making more copies, but being always busy doesn't help...

Here are my questions for today.

1. Due to a lot of negative reaction toward the previous two RIG’s, does Gaia plan to do anything to improve the odds and game play of these items?

2. Many Gaians regard Dernier Cri as a “gold sink” in the economy to combat inflation. However, that is not how it seems to be working. Was it meant to be a gold sink? Because if it was, here is the problem:
The items are limited edition, which causes a shortage in supply
The marketplace prices have near doubled for a lot of these items
If we take Merlin’s hat as an example, it costs 4.7 mil in the store. Current market price is 8 mil. That means that although Dernier Cri took out 4.7 mil from economy, the item indirectly generated 3.3 mil, becoming another RIG or EI.
Do we really need a gold shop to contribute to inflation?

3. Has Gaia staff considered making an official RIG feedback thread like it does for EI’s?

4. Will there be at least a small event this Easter such as an egg hunt?

All the chance items are built to be challenging but fair. We actually keep track of all the items given out to make sure of that. For sure we're not changing things to be tougher.

The items in Dernier Cri are definitely a means of working against inflation. Though any effort in that is shadowed by the amount of gold we grant out daily, which is a significant amount. That's why there's still inflation. High priced items always will battle inflation even if their re-sale value are lower.

Hey DJ! Maybe you can elaborate more on the switch from gatherings to "feedback sessions"...?

I am going to miss the dance portion of gatherings, as well as all of the fun games, and just having fun with general users, rather than the whole "Gaia professionals up on stage while people ask questions" sort of thing. Why was there this change?

Also, is Gaia still going to have a booth in the AX exhibit hall this year? Do you know that yet?

Anyway, I'll be very busy at Sakuracon (so many wonderful voice acting panels, plus the guest reception -- hooray!) so, sadly, I may not be able to hang out with you much. I'm going to both Gaia panels though!

Socials arn't gone completely, some conventions will still have socials but im working out the specifics. I definately agree that informal socials are alot of fun and can be a good way to meet new friends.

The feedback sessions are a new format where we ask for your direct feedback with regards to specific features to help us make Gaia the best site ever. Your feedback is really important and we want to give you all sneak peakes at upcoming games, features and updates while recieving direct feedback about what you like, don't like and would like to see more of. In addition to new features and games we will also be asking for feedback on other games and features that are currently on Gaia.

We arn't having a booth presence at any convention in 2010. But we will have some amazing prizes at all of our events for all attendees as well as a few really rare prizes to be raffled and given away to a few lucky winners.

Societal Downfall

Well, since the main reason I'm even on gaia anymore is the aquariums, I've got quite a few thoughts on them. But I'll keep it short.

1) The fish life issue: Can we have a way to kill off fish that won't die? Plus, are the going to fix (if they haven't recently), the bug that causes your fish to have stupidly long life?

2) "No Advertising" rule: With the large amount of users starting to disable signatures, I really think this rule should be re-thought to allow people to still cultivate their creativity and share with the community. i.e. I'm told that I can't have a simple text based link at the end of my post, yet lots of people have [images] "you've been bumped by this thread" posts which are advertising, but there is no 'crack-down' on that.

I understand in many forums the rule about advertising, but I really find that it cripples the GA (with trying to get people to your guides, booty grab threads, etc) and guild owners who have a theme around a 'forum' or 'game' on gaia. I'm just a bit annoyed how the rules have not grown and adapted with the community and they aren't being 'enforced' equally for all users.

3) I love new fish, but at the same time I don't want there to be 2000 possible fish for all tanks. Are there any plans as to how gaia will (or will not) 'cap' the variety of fish and bring out new fish without breaking their 'statement' that fish will never leave the store.

Otherwise, I'd just like to pass along a couple nice thoughts:

1) I was doing some research on privacy issues, and Gaia got a very high rating for it's privacy policy/precautions out of over 37 websites. Good job!
2) I really love the new overhaul to forums, etc. It really has brought the social aspect of gaia back into it for me biggrin MAD PROPS for that!

- Is there a possibility of getting a pet shop on gaia one day in the future? Sort of like a parallel to the aquarium store, but with companion items and I-Am's? I've seen people say things about wanting a pet shop in the forums quite a bit, but I was just wondering if that's an actual possibility. o 3o

Yes some items having cost so high is quite a concern. The highest end items being at impossible prizes is what we try to avoid. We're aware of that and we're working on fixing it.

Yes, we always wanted to have more of a pet focus and some time in the future there might be something more than just items. Aquarium is just a start!

Friend management is something that doesn't happen on a day by day basis, so we decided to spice things up a bit, we'll probably end up providing a better way to manage your friends pretty soon.

The most difficult part is keeping promises when projects get cancelled or we end up not getting the people or resource to launch a feature. It comes down to this weird math of how much Gaia make as a web site means how much features we can make. As time goes by, the stuff we need to support grow and grow and most staff ended up supporting stuff instead of making new stuff.

No, Gaia's probably my greatest and most ambitious project, though every NPC has their own lives and origin, and I think of them almost as independent people as the members of our staff team in the Gaia office.

1 -- i brought this up last session, but it bears repeating because it's been such a bone of contention with most people. /copypasta from last week!

the avatar arena has seen a whole rash of entries that get upvoted due to people sending out guild announcements telling the members to give so-and-so five-star scores, as well as people generally bribing others to vote for them. are there any plans to put a stop to this? ( at the very least, as an amendment to the rules of the arena that this type of advertising would be outlawed and punishable by entry removal if it's been proven they've been cheating like this? or an increased entry fee to dissuade overly simplistic entries? )

also, according to a friend who's submitted many avatars to the arena, there's apparently a weakness that allows other users to see your score when you're up for voting, so will that be fixed? i haven't entered myself, so i don't know all the details on it -- someone correct me if i got it wrong or if i'm missing something here! -- but it sounds like something trolls and other people would unfairly use to downvote avatars just to see them lose in the end.

2 -- another important question: who decides the drop rates for CIs, and what is the reasoning behind making certain things drop less than others? and how are the rates for victories and losses determined? a lot of people are upset with the outcomes of the code alpha's winnings, and a lot of the big-ticket items are hovering in the millions when the ones from past CIs used to go for a lot less when they first appeared. hopefully that won't be as much as an issue with future releases?

3 -- SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI-INSPIRED ITEMS. will we be seeing them. *A*

The arenas are actually going through another re-design at the moment. I can't promise that if one person has a ton of friends (or guild members) that the person can't ask for better votes, technically there's not much programming can help nor can we always fairly police that. Though I do think that there are a lot of potential for hosting different types of contests in the future that will yield more fair game for most contestants.

The winning chances of CI are actually relatively easy to win, though I do worry about the marketplace prices. It does reflect the very fact that there are many Gaians today with a ton of dispensable cash, and that there is an underlying inflation problem that's larger than it seems. I'll continue working on that and be making adjustments.

The most recent one being the gold store, we are still considering other types of features, and most likely there should be more lotteries, while nothing is promised at this point. Inflation is a concern, and we'll address it as fast as we can.

Anyway, thank you so much for the Easter event! I love it so much--both the main site event and the zOMG event.

A couple of questions:

Vice-captains in guilds have expressed frustration of not being able to leave a guild, just because they're vice-captain, while captains and others are able to. This is a problem when a guild is long dead, or the guild captain is no longer around. Is there anyway to fix this? And speaking of guilds, when will they be updated so that it's like the forums?

Why did the developers make the Friends page the way it is? We don't want to invite friends when we click that page, we want to see the friends that we already added! I liked it better the way it was before, where the invite friends was just a tiny link off to the side, where it wasn't so intrusive.

When will the Captain's Hat Contest winner be announced? Does this tie in in any way to the upcoming Summer Event? Will the summer event have something to do with Overseer, Sentinel, Gino (since he joined them), and the three holiday NPCs that we last saw in the Gaia manga?

On another note, I heard that the virtual worlds like Towns and Rally would be moved to a more secure platform like zOMG is on. What are the current developments of that?

Yeah I think inherently there is a problem there. The only work-around is to have the vice captain become the captain and then transfer ownership to another account, possibly a mule. We'll re-work the whole system after the re-write of the arenas.

Heard your feedback and there's a good likelyhood we'll change it back. Please stay tuned.

There is supposed to be some little bit of tie-in actually, but it's not really significant. We just thought of a fun theme to put out there for a contest. Stay tuned for more info concerning the summer event!

So a lot of the reason why there are less update on zOMG is because the team is working on just that - backend of flash spaces will later use the zOMG technology!

Well we're gonna keep making smaller games, followed by expanding the virtual world. Community features comes next, but the gaming parts are gonna get their overhaul also.

I'd say that I've met just as much married couples that met online than otherwise. I am of a young enough generation that I never questioned that...

I actually have a lot of other hobbies that are very distracting. From building Gundam models, playing video games, I found myself skating, playing badminton, and at the shooting range last month.

I had some great times hanging out with members during or after conventions. Hanging out, having dinner, in the last few years we would do little things here and there.

If anyone is giving up their sleeping time, you're spending too much time on Gaia! biggrin

Instead of starting out with a question, per usual, I'd just like to say 'thank you' to Lanzer & DJHelsing for having come up to Seattle this past weekend for SakuraCon.

This years convention was amazing. Over 8,885 Otaku attended this years event. Whats better, everything went off without a hitch! Even cooler than that was that the panels were upgraded to a whole event hall this year! 6C was almost full! Almost 800 Gaians showed up to the official panel.

I wanted to thank everyone involved in this years Easter event. It's fantastic. One of my favorite events, and favorite event items to date! A job really well done, considering it's only supposed to be a minor event in comparison to others. And releasing the Zombie skin was pure brilliance. biggrin

Think we considered but it would be weird for all users who haven't played through the old Halloween event.

This week is a rough week here at Gaia mainly because we had done a few things wrong and it caused a lot of concerns within our teams. In particular, I want to apologize to you guys for the changes we've done last week that were not announced at all. We formed new teams a few months ago with the goal of making quick changes that doesn't take months to build so we can get more features out to you guys, but in the middle of it all we missed out on the important aspects of sharing our progress and asking for feedback.

i have 2 things to say I was banned and i was hacked. my very first account here was hacked, i named it hyperman6-95 then it got hacked and the username was named -lord of hypocrisy- with the signiture still saying hyperman-6-95 (still says it btw and i havent gotten the account back) and my banned account, you guys didn't tell me why i was banned (or if i could appeal it :/)

My question is a simple one: When will you, as a company, realize that your customers require information on when and what you will be changing on the site? When will you stop spreading the information to dozens of blogs and sites, and make ONE place to release info like when events will be dropped or when pages will be updated? I've been told some among you are working on it. I know EaTaiaG is. So why has nothing changed or gotten better? Why weren't we told beforehand about booty grab nerfing and the My Gaia change, and many many others? Why is spamming us about scholarships more relevant to all Gaians than your updates?

Sorry for letting you down. But it's a goal for Gaia with many teams each working on their own projects to all make sure that we share our progress with you all. The reason we ask for our teams to do that is because we care about what you think. The challenge is that some of our teams are brand new and we made such mistakes. Things like the Gaia blog is a new approach to help deliver such news, and as a feature that's just a few weeks old, please note that we're doing things one step at a time to get there. I can only apologize that we're not there fast enough. But please keep the feedback coming, as we will continue to listen and strive to improve.

1. First of all, I love the Golden Wings and that's the main subject of this question. Will we get a silver version of it too?

2. Even though I like the new hairstyles that were released, I still feel that the older hairstyles such as the Terra Twist and others are somewhat lacking in the color availability. Can we ever expect these older hairstyles to be updated with more colors/hues? I sure love to see older hairstyles to be available in more colors.

For the time being we're still busy pushing new stuff, so adding more colors and hues to older hair is on top of our list right now but we always go back and make adjustments at different times.

I thought about all of the things I could have asked here today, and despite all the possibilities I came up with, there's only two that are of particular interest to me, which are:

1. "When are those of us with malfunctioning Scion Cars/Scion Garage(s) going to be able to use them again?"

2. "Why is it taking so long to fix whatever's wrong with them?"

Now, I know for a fact that I'm not the only one with this problem (it'd be rather selfish of me to think that way), but mine seems to be far worse than most others. Ever since the "Three Car Garage" update was implemented in November 2009, my own Garage has been rendered inaccessible, and my Car has completely disappeared - both features are either locked or disabled for me. As far as I know or can tell, I haven't gotten any specific answer or resolution for this issue.

"Clearing the browser cache" doesn't help anything, and Adobe/Macromedia Flash has been up-to-date since the beginning of the year. The problem appears to be within something on the site itself, and until whatever's wrong with that portion of the site is fixed, I won't be able to utilize those features as I should be able to.

I thank you for your time, and I hope you will be able to give these questions as much consideration as you would any other. I hate to make my post sound like I'm angry at the site or its staff, but after six months of not having access to one of my favorite features, I'm understandably annoyed (hence, the unusual image & somewhat volatile corresponding text at the bottom of my signature).

Sorry for the wait, I'll check with the team about having the garage fixed. The team's focused on zOMG and improving the overall flash spaces but we can certainly go back to fix bad bugs like these.

I'll try to keep it short, but I have a serious concern to bring up this week. I'm still enraged by the utterly unannounced and exceedingly poor decision to cut glow times in half, which is at the very least, exceedingly unethical from a business standpoint, and has turned me off of supporting the site entirely. I mean, if our products are going to be changed without warning after purchase, why would I want to risk even more of my money by buying your products? Here are my questions for this evening:

- Why were fish nerfed?

- Why aren't we informed when this sort of thing happens? If it's going by a game standpoint, then if the zOMG devs can keep up informed of sometimes quite drastic changes to the game, then why can't the people who work on aquariums do the same?

- Is it possible to reach a compromise on the issue, or are we supposed to just accept the fact that you guys gutted a product after it was purchased?

The wonderful work in my signature links to a petition and an organized strike which began on Friday, and it has gathered the support of 1500+ Gaians, many of which are high-end tank owners, and I'm sure a fair few among them have spent quite a sum of money making their tanks as lovely and wonderful as they can. After this nerf, I'm sure quite a few of them will no longer be buying fish unless this nerf is lifted or a fair compromise is reached, and I count myself among them.

There were gameplay changes being made but they're actually really light. There's no nerf to any specific fish and in most cases it's just in response to links and sites that were made to work around the tank discover aspect of Booty Grab. There's no intention to make tank owner's tanks less valuable.

Hello, everyone. Today, I'd like to bring up some of the issues I have with the recent update (something you probably expected from many of this session's visitors). Since I know that long posts tend to make heads spin, I've bolded the most important part. 3nodding

-The removal of the thingy that said which friends were online.
-The fact that friend requests now send PMs when declined is bad enough, but now I can't even leave them sitting there to avoid [hurting someone's feelings/pissing someone off/being bombarded with "y u rejict meee1?"], because they're stuck in a constant thought bubble that won't go away until I accept or decline.
-The new images for stuff (profile comments, friend requests, etc.) is a relatively small annoyance, but I still prefer the old ones.
-The fact that when I have two different categories in a thought bubble (e.g., profile comments and PMs), and I click on one, the other goes away before I can check it as well.
-The "notices" section. Seriously, I don't care that my nonexistant fish are 91% happy, nor do I particularly want to know that the Angelic Halo is on sale for 300 million gold today.
-The fact that I can't turn any of this OFF.

Change, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. What we want, Gaia, are options.

6. Will you guys be updating the new "My Gaia" page with more functions soon? I'd love to be able to customize it myself, since I'm not that very found of knowing whenever my fish hates me or one of the items in my wish list were sold cheaply.

For starters, we're bringing the friendslist back, and secondly, we're adding customization options to notices. There are other changes too that we'll be posting soon.

I like many others am wondering why gaia nerfed the glow times for Booty Grab. Many of us find this to be both unfair and dishonest. It makes gaia seem to be an untrustworthy company who tampers with products after they've been purchased.

Now tha TOS may cover gaia's butt and make it legal, but it doesn't make it ethical and it sure as heck doesn't make people want to remain customers. I don't understand why the tanks would be nerfed in a way that pretty much only hurts the owners, you know the paying customers. If it isn't resolved I'll likely let my fish die off and then just move on from gaia. This whole situation has left a bad taste in my mouth and certainly has discouraged me from buying again.

The concern that started catching our attention was that there were a lot of people making aggregation links or sites that automated the booty grab experience, it's not exactly botting but it's circumventing the way which the game was designed to be played.

Imagine, if a certain game has 10 ways to earn money, and then through out the year someone figured out ways to make one way to earn money 10 times better than the other 9 ways to earn money in ways that the creators didn't anticipated for, we need to start adjusting before we have a serious case of inflation and before all other ways of earning or other activities be considered as useless. It's more of a matter of game balancing and also to make the overall game more fair for everyone. Though in this case the intent was not to nerf the value or return of the tank owners. We'll continue to make adjustments to compensate for the adjustment.

In any online game, patches are made that will change the aspects of gameplay. We're not making these changes for the sake of making more money. As you mentioned, if you're unhappy, you wouldn't want to pay for any fishes or items. Our goal is make sure that the game is fair and that a year down the road the economy isn't ruined to the point where there's no game left to play. I hope that we can avoid that, and we're doing everything we can while keeping note on everyone's feedback.

4. Will we ever get a feature so that we can report a person? I know we can do that for scamming and harassment, but I always see people with inappropriate usernames and I’m unsure how to report them.

About 6 9 months ago I asked a question regarding password safety (specifically, the fact that one can’t use special characters in one’s password), and you responded that you guys were currently working on improving safety issues. (Specifically, you said: "Skipping to the security portion, we're gonna be working on some features to disallow simple phishing techniques to steal accounts, and more ways to verify accounts so that simply getting someone else's password isn't enough to start stealing items. We never stop discussing over this issue since it's extremely important to us.") Soooo what’s been done, or is there something brand new you guys are still working on?

Yes, in working with our economist we're cautious in the flow of gold being granted and starting to make adjustments. Just that the general aspect is (more gold injected into economy = more inflation), yet the general wish from everyone is to have more gold. So it's a tough problem to solve.

Yes. And also a way for users to have higher goals to achieve. It really mimics what real life is like.

Yes and no, meaning that it's a number around 2 million active Gaians, but if you include all visitors and guests it bumps to around 8 million according to Google Analytics. No meaning that the numbers are not 100% accurate because there are mules (which we don't include), there are users with duplicate IP's, etc so we can approximate to a pretty confident number but it's not down to the dot.

Good question. Not right now and that is a problem. We'll incorporate that into the newer interface pretty soon.

Yes, the changes we've made are more backend related, though it'll be tough for me to list them out because that'll compromise their effectiveness. There are very strict features that makes phishing impossible that that's turned on for all admin accounts but it involves so much inconveniences that we couldn't enable that for all users. Instead we did other changes in the backend.

however, you did not mention a date or time for this occurrence.

Care to give a few more details? Are you recycling all the names? or just some?

Also, that same post mentioned it would be users who hadn't logged in for two years. I think that's too recent to be fair. I believe 4 years of not logging in would be much more fair.
However, I'm not arguing, I'm extremely happy about this upcoming "recycle".

ALSO. What ever happened to the "Night Fright Skin" recipe? Why was that never released?

AND. The Golden Egg has cracks in it now, can we expect it to hatch really soon? Can you give us a time for when it will hatch? Or at least a hint?

Yes, that's a very good question. We will be recycling old names really soon. The only question is - how do we roll out the change and not create a situation where good names end up being reserved and not used? We hope to have a better answer before pushing the changes out. We are only going to release accounts that registered and did nothing. We're not ready to release account names from inactive users yet.

Can't promise 100% but we're pretty set on releasing it this Halloween. Thanks for your patience.

And as for the egg, yes it'll be hatching, but it'll be a small wait.

Nope, I don't have anyone under ignore, since I get so much mail it doesn't matter one way or another

Not really, in the past we've had staff members take over NPC's too, as long as it's the same "author" of the NPC. Not anyone can just pretend to be one NPC or another, that wouldn't be right.

Yes more events does mean less comic, though we're still working hard on it. Will fill you in with more detail when we're close to completion.

Virus are usually pretty easy to deal with. It's those scenarios where if you can boot up, go clean your PC and you'll be okay, or you've met a virus that made your PC not able to boot at all. Of course, mileage may vary. Always read more about other people's experiences dealing with the same virus before tackling it yourself. Keep googling for more info!

My favorite con is Fanime because it's closest to the Gaia HQ. Though as a convention I always like how Otakon is organized.

Good evening, Lanzer! My question today is about inflation. We all know it's out of control, and that the Gaia staff is always watching the flow of gold in and out of the economy. I've heard general statements of changes being made in the back end...but nothing specific!

What, specifically, is being done to combat the inflation in the economy? What are these "tweaks?"

Buki -- I hear that you'll no longer be doing EIs! Are you excited about the switch to other projects?

Tweaks are generally more directed towards balancing out different activities and gold earnings. Avoiding situations where someone can game the system and earn a ton more gold than users legitimately playing on Gaia. Otherwise, the typical lottery, high gold items, or any movement that demands gold that goes back into the Gaia system (instead of switching hands to another user) are all gold sinks.

People are going to shoot me for this because people like free stuff…..but something has to be said about certain features of the site…

1. Seeing as how people are having a hard time with the Avatar Arena and downvoting, I think it would be a good idea to charge the entrant and the voter GC instead of Gold. This would virtually stop the downvoters and the crappy entries. People tend to think more about what they’re doing when something out-of-pocket is involved. As an addition to this, I think the gold reward for the winners should be raised.

Now don’t shoot me yet. I’m not done….

2. I also think it would be a good idea to start charging GC for additional Outfit slots past 12 or 15. Again not Gold. I think you should sell the additional slots in bundles or allot a one-time payment for 50 – 100 slots. Basically the worry about some of the users here is that you won’t add more slots due to server space. However if you charged GC for the additional slots, that’ll basically pay itself off as there are people on this site who wouldn’t mind paying extra for more space. They are paying for the space they need with no strings attached. It helps with consumer confidence when you know exactly what you’re getting.

Why am I saying this and mentioning these things?

Simply put the Gold Sinks are not working and Gold is taken as a dispensable joke. There is virtually no point to them. You sink some gold out of the system, and then you play a game to gain the same amount or more back. It never ends. All the while you guys are still struggling with server space, bills, an angry mod of users who don’t seem to understand that due to lack of resources you guys can’t give us cool things that would enhance our experience here….like updating the Homes, Towns, Cars, and Rallies, the very things that made Gaia Online an appetizing hangout in the first place.

Basically I think it’ll be a really good idea for you guys to start charging GC for the Optional Additional Features on this site. There are no risks here. People won’t have to worry about feeling cheated. They get EXACTLY what they’re paying for with no strings or adjustments attached. And that’s something people would like without feeling there’s a risk involved or feeling as though its worth will depreciate.

The site is still Free with Payable Extras…and so it should be. But I feel that you need to add Optional Features to the payable extra list as well. Anyway I thought it would be a cool idea because it just seems as though you guys are overlooking basic solutions while trying to please everyone and stay afloat.

So, yeah, I would like to hear your thoughts on this if you don't mind.

We're working on a re-write to the Avatar Arena and all of arena in general. The new system will be more demanding in being able to qualify better avatars and status of the submitter.

As far as charging GC goes, it's really a tough balance between giving those who would like much more features to have what they want, to being too over bearing on mentioning "pay us money" that Gaia become a site that feels like you can't get anywhere without paying. At the end of the day, it's the fact that Gaia is free which attracted so many Gaians to be here, and that there are so many users on Gaia which makes having great outfits fun to be showing off. Yes, the tough part is all about keeping things fair for those who can't or don't want to pay, to those who contribute financially to the site. For those who intended to help Gaia by spending GC, we owe all of you to thank you for your contributions, so that's also important. Being specific to features like additional slots, yes, there will be some features that will cost GC in the future. It won't make Gaia less fun if you don't spend GC, but for those who are really into Gaia, having those features will probably make life easier.

Last week we tried getting the changes for MyGaia ready but we still end up needing more time, so bear with us and you'll see changes headed your way real soon.

For those who are interested in conventions around the states, check with DJ Helsing's posts for more updates. Besides Sakura-con, I'll also be attending Fanime, Anime Expo, Anime Weekend Atlanta, and also Otakon this year. DJ and others will be attending a lot of other conventions too.

Hello Lanzer! I've been very busy and haven't been able to attend AtA much lately. I hope you're well! Here are my questions this week:

1) Approximately how old was Johnny K. Gambino at "time of death?"

2) On Gino's old profile, his birthday said "May 13, 1988." Was that accurate? It seems to fit his growth patterns for the most part.

3) I have asked several times about cutting Gino's hair, all of which have gotten a "meh" from staff. Do you think Gino won't be Gino without his luscious woman locks? In this collectible card by reapersun, in the upper left, he appears to have shorter hair, and still looks very much like Gino. I have also sketched a short-haired Gino, different from his younger years, in which I think he looks very natural. If Gino really is nearing 22 years old, don't you think it's about time he beat the awkward teenage stage, cut his hair, and grabbed ahold of his potential?

Also, I would like to take this time to mention, to anyone reading, my Gambino-centric art contest, VIVA GAMBINO. Over 26 million in pure and prizes and rising! Ends in July, so you have plenty of time to enter! heart (please note, both Johnny and Gino have a part in this contest.)

I think he's 47 years old.

Okay, 1st the annoying really over done question about the BOO skin.
I'm just asking to clear something up, not to state an opinion on it one way or another.

Is Gaia ever going to being back the BOO skin?
I had thought it was said some where, in another AtA I think, that you wouldn't be re-releasing it and that you were keeping your word like the Grombie Skin.
Or was that just a statement made on the fact that the SIN skin wouldn't be released?

Now that that's out of the way:

2. The Username Recycling, this is probably a stupid question:
What are yo going to do about the Usernames of Banned account?
Like say if they do have posts and were once active, but you know that those people aren't coming back since they're banned.

3. Can you give any hints on the new [NPC] Saiph Account that's appeared recently? {On the 22nd}?

4. Would Gaia ever consider auctioning off an Angelic Halo for IRL money?

Extra- Will you ever consider opening up the Username recycling to once "active" accounts that haven't been logged into for the past 2 years.
I assume no but people keep arguing over it so I thought I'd ask.

Currently there's no plan for re-releasing the skin, and because it's not based upon the same reason as the Grombie skin, things could change depending on things happening to future storyline.

As for right now, we're only recycling usernames that had never been active, so that wouldn't include banned accounts.

Saiph... sorry no hints right now.

Nope. We have the intention to potentially giving out some of the older items, though it should be in a more fair way than literally "selling for money". Most likely through quests. Though sorry there's no answer right now.

As of now the items will be the same for 2010 But we may change them at some point! But as of now they are the same for all of 2010 but... they arn't soul bound this year so having multiples has its rewards, you can give them to friends who cant attend in 2010!

Mainly politics but i've been thinking about pulling back on djing and focusing more on mcing since i enjoy it more, its less stressful and its less political!

#1 Lanzer, Does Gaia ever intend to hire a PR person instead of expecting artist's to defend themselves?

#2 Last ATA you mentioned a schedule for EI's, could you elaborate or are they soon to be phased out?

#3 Communication still seems to be an issue from last year, is anything going to be done to make this better so customers feel more comfortable spending money here?

We're gonna have certain artists who do help represent the majority of artists such as CP, and there will be better means to access artists profiles. It'd be kind of odd to have a "representative", so to speak, in between us as staff and you as Gaians. Instead we are having a co-ordinator who is a new role focused on communications.

It's something that I've been asking. Just a way for Gaians to anticipate on EI evolutions. We're still working towards it.

Overall we're focusing on going with a better schedule and having someone dedicated to communications. Changes are happening but it's taking longer than we want. Please be patient with us. sweatdrop

What has happened to the Case of Pietro and Catastrophe evolving items?

It has been six months since the Cat has evolved, and almost 2 months since Pietro has done so as well.

We all realize evolving items have a 'no set pattern' back up if they don't, but it seems these items are taking way too long in most folks opinions. And I say most because someone will eventually say "The artist is just busy." or some other reason.

Both these items have been out for 9 months(End of July last year), and some of use would like to see something, or at the least hear a reasonable reason as to why these items are seemingly ignored. But we have not heard anything, save for artist telling us it is not their call.

I know it was said that the attention is slowly being drawn away from evolving items. Some even speculate that you eventually will stop making them, Even so, at some point, these items were bought using real money somewhere along the way, and those of us that still own them, either as original owners, or purchasers from the MP, would love to see these items have an update/finish.

Now, we have been given the answer that the decision for this delay was more or less the call of those in the higher levels of decision making, and since this thread is to ask those in that area questions...

Hopefully we'll hear something soon, but my hope is maybe we could have an answer here?

Sorry Ridley, I've been looking into why some of the EI haven't been updated on a timely manner and been reminding the team. I'll definitely go back and make sure that we keep up with the evolutions. The intention was definitely not to stop evolving them, but I think individual artists were caught up with specific projects recently. But I hear your concern and I'll definitely bring them over to the artists.

I think it is important for individual artists, much like us as programmers or any other staff, to receive direct feedback so that we feel how you feel as Gaians and can respond and relate to you all. At the end of the day, we're all working day and night to help make Gaians happy. Being able to listen better help us balance that aspect.

What is going to happen with Towns? I remember hearing something about integrating Towns and zOMG. Is that true? If so, is there a timeline on that?

Wanted to end the day answering this one question concerning Towns.

We started with zOMG thinking that we're going to have this one great platform that we can easily transfer all the Towns environments over, but after the release of zOMG, we realized that the backend was completely different to the point where it's actually REALLY HARD... sweatdrop

But our initial goal haven't changed. The team is still working towards the goal of having a better backend platform for the flash spaces, and is still working on it right this moment. It's just taking a lot more time than expected.

More news would come as we get closer to having something to show everyone. Sorry for the wait.

Hello everyone!

Most of you are probably wondering what's with the new header and the sparkling effects.

The answer at this very moment is that - there is now a feature to distinguish between regular items and premium items on Gaia so that everyone can have a easy way to tell them apart. It works especially well in the marketplace where users would be able to tell one type of items versus another. Otherwise, this actually leads up to another feature release, but it's far away and there will be more clues leading up to it. eek

Questions:

1. Concerning the new item CS item, "Hermes Moon: Aspiration," in the future, if this CS item is very popular, will we be seeing more combined items like it? : O

Lanzer, I know this is not of great importance next to things like colouring items or fixing gaming glitches in zOMG, but, in the future, will there ever be a "pause" button in the game of Booty Grab? Because when I am sometimes in the middle of playing Booty Grab, I sometimes have to get up from my laptop and do something and when I do, I am either left with the options of exiting out of Booty Grab or keep the game running because I cannot stop the game from running. gonk

3. In Gaia HQ, when somebody comes to your office to work for Gaia from another country or from a life style you are not familiar with (For example: the country side, another country, or land), do you do any research to try and learn more about their cultural background from where they are from? Do you look up things like land marks, pop culture, music, or things relating to a person's home land to try to relate to them more as a friend and to understand them more?

1. Is there more to our Premium Items sparkling or is there more to it? If not, why go through the trouble of making this beautiful header and the comic just to tell us that Premium items are now distinguished by the sparkles instead of just making a plain announcement about it?
2. If there is an event tied in with all of this, then who is this "them" that Saiph and Hatsya are referring to?
3. There seems to be a problem regarding disabling friends requests in the flash worlds. For example, someone I know has her friends request disabled, yet she still gets random friend invites whenever she waltzes into Towns.
4. Will we be having a prom event sometime this month or next month?

There is more, but they will come over time, so don't hold your breath!

As far as friending in Towns goes, there are problems right now, and we hope to fix the whole thing when we move to the new platform.

This year there should be something small, but not a full blown event like last year.

3) You said last week you're all for giving Gino a haircut. I've taken a (somewhat biased) sampling of GSTers and Haremites alike and those who've spoken up said they'd be fine with it. First off, I think most of Gaia is pretty excited about what's going to happen with this new plot line. As for making the animated sparkles on our premium items, thumbs up for scam prevention. But there is one thing about it; many users, including myself are worried about the lag and eye strain the animations cause in our inventory, especially when we have tons of items in there.

Is there a way we can have a static indicator for premium items? Just like a the little icon for soul-bound items and for D*C?

There will also be an option to turn the effects off. It's being built right now. Thanks for sharing the comment!

I'd like to reword a question that you misunderstood last time someone asked it. Back in 2005 you had a Poll Forum and regularly put polls in it asking people for feedback on the newest features and such. These days you've been using off-site Surveys for largely the same thing...is there a real reason you don't use your own Poll Forum anymore? It seems like a more handy and convenient option...

I'm not sure where they said it, but it was something involving more accuracy from users but I might be wrong. Also thanks to DJ Helsing for coming to Arizona on Saturday for the Meet-Up. Feel bad that he lost his luggage though but it was awesome!

A couple of questions I've been saving up (because I keep missing it)

1) Is there any plans of having Fin Spins available to purchase with Gaia Cash or some other form of currency that is not Facebook Credits? I want to buy them, but a lot of FB's policy changes lately have made me (and many others) angry, so I don't want to spend my money there.

2) Could there be some way we could gift Gaia Cash to friends, either via PayPal or a secure PIN delivery system?

3) How is Gaia doing financially? We haven't heard much since the end of 2008, just before several of the employees had to be laid off. It's been almost a year and a half, and there have been changes to sponsorships, the numbers of ads, and the frequency of Cash shop items. Is Gaia Interactive working its way up to the black, or is it still pretty mired in debt?

Hope you guys like the new manga update. We've also got another update coming up, but I won't spoil the fun until the announcement comes out later this week.

Just watched Iron Man 2 yesterday, it's a great movie but kind of a let down... I guess I was hoping for more Tony Stark humor. smile

Lanzer! I hope you are doing fabulously and have had a wonderful past week. I can not tell you how happy I am about Gino's haircut. I hope you join me in rejoicing. It seems silly to be so happy about such a simple thing, but as you know I have been asking for it for about three years, often directly to you at anime conventions... now I can stop bugging you about it and find a new crusade! xd Gino looks "pretty damn good right now," and I hope some Gaian artists will agree and draw him some damn fine colored art to honor the new 'do... ninja heart

Here are my questions for this week!

1) Last AtA you mentioned that the gaia team was working on bios for the gaian characters. How detailed will these bios be? What sort of information will they include?

2) Is there an ETA on the bios? A general guestimate is fine.

3) Will Labtech X and Frank soon be involved in the manga plot again?

4) Is Gino doing anything for his 22nd birthday on Thursday? 8D

5) When Gino wanted to ask about the rejected credit card, how do you think the conversation between Johnny and Gino would have went if the call had gone through and Johnny had been there to pick up the phone?

Also, I would like to take this time to mention yet again, to anyone reading, my Gambino-centric art contest, VIVA GAMBINO. Over 30 million in pure and prizes! Ends in July, so you have plenty of time to enter! heart

The bios won't be too detailed but will cover some of the more popular characters. No deadlines yet, but it shouldn't take that long.

The current storyline updates doesn't include Labtech and Frank, so I can't give much of a promise.

I think the new hair is already a celebration. biggrin

I don't think Gino would have much of an opportunity to talk. That's always how things had been between the two...

Hey Lanzer, and other admins like Simone and eaTaiaG. Cookies for ya all!
I hope you're doing fine. Anyhow, I just wanted to ask a few things to you guys and I just knew the ATA was the best place to do so. Most of my questions are regarding the profile system and forum but is mostly out of curiosity.

1. Will the PD (Profile Discussion Forum) have more (a) active mod(s)? I know the current mods are active as they can be, but the PD just seems a little bit... forgotten! D:
2. When are you guys gonna stop supporting Ie6? O: Just curious~
3. Will the "Recommend" button on profiles be gone someday? Or will the Feutured Profile section be back any time soon (or maybe not)?
4. Are there any new exciting features coming to the site? No need to tell me which ones, but are there any big new improvements or new features planned? ;D
5. So... getting ready for summer?! :D Are you gusy going to the beach? :D

#1 is more of a question for Simone, as I'm guilty for not hanging out in PD myself. sweatdrop

IE6 causes us tons of trouble for most of our features, but usually we manage to make things work on a minimal level. No specific time as to when we'll officially stop supporting it yet.

We are making the recommend feature more apparent for forum threads, and in time we might make a similar effort to profiles too. Though for now, the answer is that featured profile is on the backburner, waiting for a chance to return.

The next thing we're improving is related to daily chance, announcement should be out really soon.

A number of us were at the beach for a birthday party last Saturday. We had a great time!

are there any plans on making the devil and angel imp skins with other skin tones?

i'd like to see seperate settings for what shows on the my gaia pageand what shows for the notifications.
i like seeing when a subscribed thread has a new post, but i don't want an alert for it.
any thoughts about being able to do that?

also with the my gaia page, when someone has a trade with me, if i click their name in the little notice thing, it just sends me to my profile.

any chance that the issue with the pages not redirecting after you've made a post in the forum will be fixed?
i think its also doing it after editing a post too, and maybe a few others aren't redirecting.

is there any possible way that in the future users could be able to delete their own threads?

can we have the emotes showing when we go to post a comment on profiles?

also the post in here needs the time corrected to 5 instead of 6

Thanks for the feedback on MyGaia. I will check on your requests, as some of them should be easy fixes but some aren't.

The redirect issue sounds like a bug that should be fixed soon

As for thread deletion, we might go to the length of locking threads if the owner wish to, but deleting might be too tough as I can image some users who greatly contributed to a thread might be upset. Maybe in very specific forums?

Heya! I have a few questions that I've been wondering about.

1. Are there any plans for them to be updated and/or get the same things that the main forums have? Recently the ability to post Youtube videos in the main forums was added. Will this ever be a feature that will be added to guilds? What about just regular updates? They seem to be on the backburner.

2. Guild announcements were one of the best updates to guilds a few months back. However with the update of My Gaia and having the ability to see what notifications you want, what's the point of Guild Announcements now if you can just turn them off? Not that I don't think announcements are great or helpful! I love them. But if someone has a chance to turn off the announcements, then what's the point of them?

The guilds have been slated for an update and it had been waiting for too long, and I apologize for that. Somehow the order got changed to arenas then guilds. Though small changes like video postings should be something we can add in the near future.

It's unfortunate that there comes a balance between what the guild owners want and what individual users want. At the end of the day I'm sure that most, if not almost all guild users will be leaving their notifications on. If a user don't want the notification, they probably wouldn't respond even if the guild announcement catch their attention.

That's a tough one, I love housing but it felt like the flash team kept getting caught up with other features. There's a chance housing might get re-worked within the whole flash space re-write. I hope that happens.

There's been talk about some minor update, but I don't have any detail yet.

I think it's meant to hatch on one of the next zOMG event.

As for the other event characters, the next event won't be about them, so we'll just have to be patient until the other holidays come by. eek

Speaking of the manga update, here's my question: Why do you guys make the manga read left-right instead of the traditional right-left. Since you call it a manga I would assume it should be read like all manga, otherwise I would consider it more "comic". Are there any plans to change it to right-left format?

We opted for the American comic book format because all the main artists for Gaia had a background for drawing American comics. Since English is read from left to right, I don't think it's a problem for us when things are planned that way from the beginning.

Haven't heard any deals with Dreamworks for the time being so the answer is probably a no. Though I must say that I love the movie a lot. It's definitely Dreamworks's best.

~How long does it take to coordinate a major site event (the Rejected Olympics for example)? What are some of the steps involved from the time you guys think of an idea to the time of release?~

Every event usually take about 1 to 2 months to plan and release. We're talking about the bigger site wide events with multiple levels of achievements and group play, and events where just the idea and concept would take a week to hash through. Of course, often we try really hard and the reception would turn out to be poor, so we're getting more cautious in planning to ensure that everyone have a good time, and somehow things end up getting longer to build. smile

I'm sorry for asking such a silly question to you. ._. However, the person in the Nissan Maxima looked just like you! He had a black haircut and everything! Heya!

First off, I love the MC's that were released on Saturday! They actually made me consider buying one and changing my avatar which I rarely, rarely do. I was wondering though about some of the items that have been released in the Cash Shop or as RIG items (such as Great Old One, Let it Snow). I think these items would be excellent MC ideas. Some of the recent MC's haven't been as good as others. Why have things that would be good MC ideas be released in the Cash Shop?

Secondly, I'm interested in information on the new Daily Chance. It used to be like a random, fun game for everyone. Now with the recent changes that you have to invite a lot of people, it's not necessarily for everyone. It reminds me more of high school, where the more popular people get all the better stuff. How is this fair for people who have invited people in the past and don't have many people to invite (like me)? Or prefer to keep Gaia their "dirty little secret" which is also something I do? Or for those who simply have no friends that they think would like this website, which is yet another subject I fall under? For those who have no one/can't invite others, what should we do in order to get some cool Daily Chance items? It said in the Announcement that mules are prohibited, and I don't like the idea of having a ton of accounts. Are we kind of left out?

Mostly different artists work on different items, and they each come up with their own ideas. So there isn't one person to say "this should be an MC while this goes to the chance item". We try to do our best each time around.

Yes after hearing the feedback we're re-thinking what kind of changes we should potentially make. For now we're holding off the release until the achievement system is out. That felt more like something everyone will love for sure.

Why are the guild announcements part of notices? This really bugs almost every Guild captain I've talked to. We're scared our announcements aren't being noticed because they're part of the notices now. We also hate the fact that there is an option to turn them off. Why pay to send an announcement when you don't know if your members will get it? Can you please put the Guild Announcements back into their own Bubbles and get rid of the ability to turn them off?

Edit: This is my first real experience with AtA. Our thread also gives a more in depth look at the people who have posted their opinions. There is a big userbase who are worried about this issue.Seperate the Guild Announcements

The main goal in this case is to have one place where everyone would go to in order to see what's new, and while the option to turn things off is there, it's much more beneficial for messages to hit the attention for those who care. Kind of like how Gaia's email notifications are completely optional, even though we wish for all who singed up for Gaia to hear us say what's new. Regarding the paid aspect, we're thinking that through and might change how that aspect works. We'll let everyone in as we come to a conclusion.

Anyhow, about those casimir trees. Are we going to get any more clues about their origins and how they work those airships from Gino's journal entries in the plot? A lot of us have been speculating and theorizing about them and we love the whole casimir tree and airship side to Gaia. This is a fun plot we have going on.

Hi Lanzer! Just wondering, there have been so many leaks recently - are they all unintentional, even the ones in official banners? Or are some of them there to get us all excited as to what is to come? surprised

Also, random question: what is your preferred brand of desktop/laptop and why?

Funny that most leaks aren't intentional, we're just pushing so much stuff out that we don't have a good clamp on the order of releasing the little things. In many cases, we ended up playing along with everyone's speculations and making them real. biggrin

Dells are generally reliable and cheap, but if I buy a laptop for home I'll probably choose that one particular model from Asus (UL20A) which is faster than netbooks yet not too heavy to carry around. Of course, all the major brand names have fast and cheap laptops now days, some of which even sport the i5/i7 processor under 600 dollars! Got too geeky with my reply here biggrin

1) You said last week that Johnny's no womanizer, but is that saying that he hasn't had any action in the last 22(?) years since Rosalie's disappearance? Can we attribute Ruby's past distaste for him to something related to the similarities between the women?

2) How much more to Sasha is there than we're seeing in shops and updates: carrot, ant colony, iceberg?

3) Will we be getting any insight into Johnny's background? Childhood, family, etc.?

4) How do you feel about all the Reality Shows on Gaia (Ultimate Pixel Reality, Gaia's Next Top Model, Chance Reality that was featured a couple weeks ago, etc.)?

Oh boy, many people have distaste for Gambino, and it's definitely not because he's a womanizer if that's what you're asking.

The description is definitely an old one, but I don't think we can change it anytime as any progression of the story need to come first from the manga updates, so please be patient as the story progress then the item descriptions will follow.

Here are my questions:

1: how come some things fly through the cash shop, and others stay in there forever? (like the 2008 aquarium bundle and some of the holiday bundles, but not all). Will the ones that have been left in the shop ever leave, or are they going to be more permanent residents?

2: When will the Gaia Help be improved? Between how you are supposed to post in certain forums (like the Bugs forum where you often never get responses), and then submitting a ticket to people that are rather incompetent (based on personal experiences), it's gotten to the point where if something breaks/ is wrong, it's almost as if you should just abandon all hope....

EDIT: yay, finally got to the first page!!

The cash shop is kind of small so we don't want to clutter it up with everything. Usually we cycle out items that are not popular. Sometimes there are exceptions, where items are tied with storylines or events.

We did get to realize that we're not good at handling a lot of prominent problems, though at the same time, we fix dozens of bugs per week, just that there are so many features we felt like we're trying to fight a losing battle. Never the less, we'll be dedicating two weeks by the end of next month on just fixing things. Hopefully that'll yield a difference.

Can we get comment notices back in the header bubble with the pm notices? If not, can we get a decent answer as to why it won't happen?

With all the new notifications that were added to the MyGaia page, we were more focused on making a one stop shop for all the activities and updates happening around the site and around what's happening between you and your friends. It unfortunately isn't the quickest and most direct thing for heavy users of the profile system.

One thing we do want to emphasize are activities outside of replies to comments in profiles, and that's where MyGaia can highlight. It will take one more click to get to the comments but we hope the extra information is worthwhile.

If the Guild Announcements can%u2019t be separated from the Notices then can you try and fix it so people get them? Someone recently sent out a Guild Announcement and none of the crew or members got it.

My Guild recently sent out an announcement to test who would see it. Not only did members NOT see it because of their refusal to use notices, but crew and members alike - who have guild announcements turned on - didn't even get an alert.

Also putting them in with notices just makes you click extra since very few people ever stay on the new my Gaia page. Will Guilds be getting an update anytime soon along with some new features? A few people heard rumors of a Guild Hall and I think that sounds like it could be very useful. Also can we have some proof of how many people wanted the ability to turn the options off? Most of the ones I%u2019ve heard of were because the announcements came from Guilds they weren%u2019t active in.

If the notices are broken then we'll definitely have it fixed ASAP. Thanks for letting us know.

As for the guild notices themselves, please continue giving us suggestions, and we'll try incorporating them moving forward.

My experience trying to catch you guys has been confusing and horrifying to tell you the truth sweatdrop

On 2k7, they summoned us to the Comic-con's elevator, and MANY gaians did so... however, you never specified the other elevator outside (the one um... yeah, outside, with the long staircases). When I found out, I felt stupid. ..
On 2k8, a friend (Who's also in Gaia) and I went to the Panel on Friday, in fact, I only arrived to Comic-con that day for your panel. Sadly I was just left off by 1 person. YES! I was 1 person short to enter. (which would probably mean my friend wouldn't have entered *sad panda* )
On 2k9 . . .I. . .decided to screw the rules

So... my recommendation to you is that :

* For the meeting you should specify where exactly sweatdrop Some aren't very good with directions. . . And I tell you, I can get lost in my own 2 floor house XD; (Da Mangaka is exaggerating again < w< )
* For the panel: I know it's not your fault but... if you can, can you try to find a bigger forum? We are many Gaians in the San Diego Area ^ ^ ( I reveal for once, that I do not live in San Diego, but down the border, in TJ < w< *le gasp* ) and we really want to... well, see your faces XD;

Also, I love how you give gold and pretty items, though I was disappointed by the ring-thingy back on 2k8 XD;

I'm trying to get both a larger room and the ability to host 2 events this year so more can attend!

There are a ton of perke for attending a Gaia IRL Event!

The first and most important or best perk is the face that you get to meet, hang out with and interact with your fellow Gaians!

When are we going to see the Games section of the site updated and bugs fixed? (Seriously, some of these bugs and glitches have been untouched for more than a year).

When are we going to see Towns and Rallies improved and made safe from scriptors?

When are we going to see new collection quests for Ruby's Rack and Rina's Flower Shop?

Why is the Blog not in the menu bar? (If you guys are going to put site update information there and not give us announcements about those updates then the Blog should be Bolded in a place where members can access it like any other part of the site)!

We've been busy trying to add the new Tiles game, after that we'll keep focusing on the flash areas, though I'm not solid on which particular one will be fixed first.

Maybe after the achievement system is released we'll be able to put more thought to the collection quests. But sorry we haven't given it much thought as of late.

The Blog is still a bit up in the air as far as what types of messages or updates it should have, then we'll give it a permanent home.

Hello everyone!

Hope you all had a great Memorial Weekend last week. Sorry for missing ATA last week as I was attending the Fanime convention and I screwed up my time. I'll probably need to ask for time off for the times when I'm attending Anime Expo and Otakon later this year. confused Will let you guys know when the time comes.

So we're getting closer and closer to releasing the achievement system, and the summer event is humming along. Tiles should be released pretty soon also. A lot of exciting stuff lined up.

Hey Lanzer! I'm happy last Monday was Memorial Day because I would have missed AtA otherwise. I'm glad I didn't miss anything. heart I hope you're well! Anywho, here are my questions for this week:

1) Did Gino draw the images of the Casimir trees in his Log? If so, he's a really good artist! (:

2) If I remember correctly, you said the summer event might be in late June. Is that still on track?

3) Do you know if any of the official artists are going to draw some pretty colored art of Gino with his new haircut soon?

4) Will the story return to Gino & Co. soon?

EDIT: You shouldn't have too much of a problem with Anime Expo since it ends on the Sunday. (: As long as you head home later that day, you should be ready to go for AtA that Monday! heart

Thanks for checking up with us. Actually, the even will happen in July, not June because of a delay. Since there is worry of things being delayed right now, I'm going to wait till the group have a more solid date before saying when the event will start. :O

That's going to have to wait as we're still working on more story updates.

Things are moving slower than we planned but yes there will be more Gino in the future storyline.

I have a few quotes from people concerning moving Guild Announcements back into their own Bubble and our opinions on the whole using My Gaia as a center Hub.
What bugs Guild Captains is that most of their members refuse to use My Gaia.

See, the trouble here is the same as the trouble with all of these latest updates. Gaia needs to stop dictating to users how to navigate the site. They should be getting feedback prior to these useless updates to find out how users already use the site and how they can improve the experience, not making their own decisions before consulting the userbase. Adding an extra step to user navigation is never a smart move - it doesn't matter what Gaia wants. It's the users who have to deal with these navigation/site usage changes at the end of the day and the users who will be pissed off if they keep becoming counter-intuitive and unhelpful.

Also we want to know why Clans still have their own bubble for Announcements but Guilds don%u2019t. Most of us find that unfair.

I don't know if anyone has pointed this out yet but you know, Clans still have separate announcements. (For those who don't know what clans really are, they basically work just like guilds except they are connected to zOMG and are free to start. There is a special clan chat within the game and so on...)

When a clan announcement goes out, you get a notice but it also gets a separate bubble like guild announcements used to. <.<

I wonder why this is...

[EDIT]: You can see in the screenie (click for full size) that I have a separate clan announcement thingie. It said 1 new notice and 1 Clan Announcement before I clicked over to My Gaia (I have a screenie of that too) and, as you can see in the notice box, it's listed as a guild announcement and everything. ^_^;

We%u2019d also like to know if you%u2019re planning updates to the Guilds and adding more features to them. A lot of us are interested in the Guild Halls which were mentioned a while back. We%u2019d also like them to be brought up to standards knowing if someone quoted you and which thread was last replied to. Quick Replies would be nice as well.

I know that moving forward a lot more notifications are follow to be funneled into the same system, and it's a matter of time, but meanwhile, for other changes that we're making or fixing that is guild related, there will be a chance for some of them to be addressed. There should be an announcement about site changes and fixes that will take place. We'll also ask for votes on what changes or fixes Gaians would like to see. These will be announced within the next two weeks or so.

Is there an ETA on when the Dumpster Diving and/or the new Tiles game shown at the Fanime Convention being released?

How about the ETA of the Summer Event?

Did Gaia decide not to recycle old usernames from inactive/banned accounts, there has not been much information about this since it was announced on the Blog?

Side note 1st ATA that I decided to posted something, I used to just lurk behind the scenes of the past ATA's.

Were actually putting Tiles to QA this week for the second round of testing to get rid of bugs and stuff to make it better for you guys so hopefully we can get it out within the next 2 weeks!

Dumpster dive is going to take us a little longer. We came across a few big issues that were currently fixing so that will take a little bit more time then the Tiles game!
