Feels more like they were only paying attention to what matches avatar-wise and barely to what matches theme-wise.

Well. It is still an avatar contest. If your theme was some long essay or you were cosplaying roleplay characters then no one cared really because if you have to take more then a paragraph to explain who you are and justify why your avatars make sense, you probably didn't deserve to win.

But it was also a COUPLES contest; I assumed that meant romantic themed avatars would be appreciated more but I guess not.

Yeah. Couples avatar contest. There were tons of really good avatars that didn't make it. Yours could have been one of them. Or it could have been one of the ones that didn't make any sense to anyone else but you and your partner. There were lots of those.

Sorry you didn't win, better luck next time. And while I don't like a lot of the avatars that won, congrats to them anyway. But try not to be so butthurt.
