Nevermind what the Japanese did to us, in 1940s, right?

We had done nothing. We were staying out of the War. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, for effectively "no reason".

We retaliated. They s**t their pants, and apologized.

Nobody has ever made the mistake of a direct invasion, since.

Why? Because our military is simply NOT something to be ******** with.

It's always a bad idea to bring this up with me around sweatdrop

Aside from the fact that the US just wasn't involved in the war effort "officially", the dropping of the bomb on what was essentially a refugee center in Hiroshima was a terrible war crime. The dropping of the second bomb in Nagasaki was even worse, as it was completely unjustified given that the first bomb had achieved the US's goal of terrifying the Japanese.

Also, Pearl Harbor was not an invasion, no more than 9/11 was... Japan may have "s**t their pants, and apologised" but there is still a deep sense of resentment among some individuals in Japan... And the rest of the world, while respecting/fearing the US's military might, also resent their bullying tactics in foreign diplomacy...

Just sayn'.
Dropping a bomb on a city (Hiroshima) containing not one, not two, but three military HQs and numerous depots of military supplies is in no way a crime. The crime was that the Japanese cared so little for their civilians that they stationed their armies and marines there instead of a more deserted region. Nagasaki was where Mitsubishi built military ships, planes, and other products intended to destroy life.

So ignorig the fact that Hiroshima was an evacuee center with minimal military prescence, and those who were there were mostly those who had been injured?

Also, most of the people hurt in Nagasaki were farmers etc.

America completely ignored what they themselves said they'd do - they did not drop the bomb on an isolated area to show they were serious, and they dropped the second bomb without giving Japan time to react to the first bomb.

Japan was getting ready to surrender after the dropping of the first bomb. America was ignorant and so self-indulgent to refuse to understand Japanese culture, so were ignorant enough to not understand this. They chose to drop the second bomb for no reason what so ever, except that served their interests in limiting a production of war vessels, which would never have been used against them, BECAUSE JAPAN WAS ALREADY IN THE PROCESS OF BEGINING TO SURRENDER!
How much time did they need to react? It took us approximately one day after their unprovoked attack on Hawai'i to get our act in gear. If they did not regard Little Boy as sufficient cause to surrender immediately, that merely shows they were fools with no regard for their own populace - or our power.

It was imperial Japan - the Empoer couldn't just say "ok, let's surrender", it had to go through all the appropriate channels and make sure every different faction didn't feel slighted or overlooked... Also, they couldn't just surrender, they didn't know what America wanted and also the people had been trained to take their own lives instead of surrendering - they had to ensure mass suicides didn't occur...

And most still don't see the attack on Pearl Harbor as "unprovocked", they see it as pre-emptive... And it was definately a military target, not a civilian city...
We had clearly spelled out the terms of surrender to them, which they refused to consider, and they suffered the consequences.

The idea that it was not unprovoked is laughable.

Japan was on the side of the Hitlers.

Any preemptive attack at our perceived attacks they would have deserved.

As well they didn't really surrendered until the second bomb.

So the sixth they surrendered, which was after the second bomb was dropped, so I imagine those channels worked pretty fast. 3nodding

Thing was martial law was declared to avoid any chance of a peaceful surrender that the civilians might seek.

So they had to force them into doing it.

The Emperor of Japan is still the voice of the people. People listen to him. Back then, he had final say on everything.
Japan was not in the process of beginning to surrender. Up until the second bomb, the Japanese and Americans were ready to go to war over Honshu.

Nagasaki: Produced most of the famed Japanese aircraft (see: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) and was a prime Naval Port.
Hiroshima: One of the prime command and base locations of the Imperial Japanese Military.
That is why we bombed them with Nukes. Not because they had refugee camps.
For that matter, the Japanese don't really care anymore. It's a social faux pax to say "nuclear" in public, but that's really about it.

If you really want to start talking War Crimes in the Pacific Theatre, I'll start digging up with the Japanese did to the Chinese, Koreans, Manchurians, and Filipinos. Now that's some nasty stuff.

Pearl Harbor was unprovoked. Politically, we thought things were going well. It was only preemptive because we would have struck had we known they were going for Philippines, which would in itself have been an unprovoked attack on American forces. Either way, they were going to attack us.

The Civilian government wanted to surrender.

We know what the Japanese Army did, no one is denying that.
But saying, 'well they did worse things' does not justify your own actions.

The atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki where intended for Psychological effect. The strategic value of taking out military bases and manufacturing plants was not the main reason, just a bonus.

And then of course you have the cover-up of the effects of the bombs on the civilian populace by the US Government that last for several decades.

And then of course you have the cover-up of the effects of the bombs on the civilian populace by the US Government that last for several decades.
Based on what we knew about the Japanese from taking Okinawa, the bombs were mild compared to an actual invasion. Millions more would have died. Mothers would be killing their children before committing suicide, because for all they knew - as their government told them - the Americans would be torturing their kids before eating them.
Millions of Americans and Japanese would have lost their lives in the war if we'd just straight up invaded or waited it out. Japan, and perhaps even America, would be far less populated, and Japan wouldn't be the technological and cultural marvel it is today.

As for what the Japanese Army did, that's news to most people.
Hell, it's news to many Japanese that they bombed Pearl Harbor. They're so ashamed of everything they did in WWII it's just not talked about that much, and really aren't that sore about the Atomic Bombs.
They still typically hate the Chinese and Koreans, though. That history cuts a little deeper.

Yes, the bombs were just as much psychological as they were of military importance. We didn't know they'd surrender for sure. They have a history of resilience. And we knew something they didn't know - that second bomb was going to be our last for some time, until we could build more.
So, logically, we chose our targets for military effect as well. If you have to fight the entire population, you don't want their best fighters still bearing down on your men, and you don't want that much of a struggle taking the beachhead, or getting there in the first place. If you wanted pure psychological, Tokyo would be a crater.

And take it from someone who's studied Nuclear Power for the past several years: The effects of nuclear weapons, radiologically speaking, has been overexaggerated by people who know so very little about it (hard to blame them, it's a complex subject, they just get fed information by people they assume are right, but really, those people just want 15 minutes of fame, and so find information and, knowing so little about it, make assumptions. Most civilian knowledge of radiation, contamination, nuclear weapons/power stems from a game of "telephone." ). There is no evidence of mutations in genetic offspring, for instance. (Embyros and unborn children, obviously, do not count), and many of the reports of cancer fall outside of the latency period.
Even Chernobyl was overexaggerated.

What about general promotion of world peace and attempting to help those in need?
What about keeping wars from ever starting?
As I've been saying, we need to stop thinking of war like it's 1918 and we're fighting the Central Powers in a grand war of attrition, where lives lost equal victory or defeat.

Wars simply don't work that way anymore.
Wars are won in the hearts and minds of the civilians and the military personnel.
Most are won before they are ever begun because one nation has a bigger stick than the other and waves it around a bit.
For instance - if America didn't have a heavy presence in Eastern Asia, do you honestly think the PRC wouldn't have taken over Taiwan? Or that North Korea wouldn't have invaded South Korea?

You have an odd sense of self-importance.
It's the opposite, we've managed to gang together over 700 U.S. military bases in 150 countries, and we are the ONLY country paying for it. Our only chance of defeat is not realizing we are paying for a collapse of our nation; thinking that we are the only nation that can positively influence the world: through military nonetheless.

We're just one of the few that do.

As well if the whole world falls into chaos we will suffer- WWI, WWII, all these middle eastern wars.

Whether we like it or not we live on this planet and what happens here effects us.

To secure our own survival and comfort, we must actively influence the rest of the world so they don't fall into a state that may damage us.

Everyone fears even the slightest difference in economy, they fear their comfort taken away so intensely that they forget what living within your means is.
Once we use our military to protect private trade in a country we have no constitution in, we have taken a step to destroy our liberty.

The world heals on it's own, the U.S. will damage itself by quickening the processes of another countries collapse. and by that, Iraq didn't deserve it's collapse just yet, it's people are still very very tied to theocratic ideas. Democracy can't work there- are you out of your mind?

Democracy can work anywhere, it's the ideal form of government other than some amazing benevolent dictator which can't exist.

People already do it in certain areas under certain situations anyways!

Again, these people can't just handle themselves, as we have found.

The Europeans couldn't handle Hitler and we had to intervene- if you seriously think that Hitler wouldn't have effected us or gone after us you are messed up in the head. By helping them we help ourselves. The less crazy people there are who can go out of their way to attack us the better. By building up a country where they can defend themselves from threats- like we are now, with the Iraq army- we don't have to worry about being attacked or we can let threats resolve themselves. Like with the Egyptian army we trained up that resolved things by siding with the people or how in Japan they can now defend themselves from outside threats- once they can defend themselves we can stay out of it, and it's exactly the kind of thing we are working towards.

Democracy can eventually turn into a theocracy, hence it worked, but it did not retain the democratic standard.
We are a modern society, they can handle themselves, and if they decide they must fight on our soil, then I as a citizen will accept their request and I will fight backed by my military. It's the liberty I take by not having to reach out and demolish other countries. (and then rebuild them) Or perhaps would Japan like to be in debt to our federal government? They can still pay for our military if they wish.

So I must ask, how many foreign military bases does China support? Does China sit back and soak up our money as the U.S. runs around crazily and uses it's military to train the world to fight crazy dictators?
