We'll say that Kestrel is lost, since his parents wouldn't deliberately abandon him, and they didn't abuse him. They just would have preferred it if he didn't exist. And they wouldn't look too hard for him if he disappeared. And if Thalia talked to him about it, it would probably come out that he's pretty sure they wouldn't want him back. So would that work?
