By itself there is a clamSurrounded by large walls.
Here it rests alone,
Waiting for one to answer its silent calls.
Therefore, here is the account thereof
Involving the hidden pearl
First one comes, silent as a dove
And passes by with no spare thought sewn
It is only a wall after all that is seen.
Next comes one with a curious mind
and wonders what could possibly lie behind.
For walls contain objects, says the mind keen.
However, discouraged becomes the one
who claims his efforts are done
when the wall, through effort, remains unscaled.
Finally one, adventurous in spirit,
the call is able to hear it.
yet still finds only a clam in the end
and wonders if that was all that would be entailed.
After such a long wait,
One more arrived at the gate
And saw the clam cast aside.
This one treated the clam with care.
Slowly removing each outer layer
Until the prize would be revealed from inside.
For this one knew that if the pearl be shattered
Nothing would be left to gain. All treasure battered.
At last the one succeeds in efforts persistent
To penetrate the shell most resilient.
Now the treasure is revealed
to the careful observer to which it appealed.
Though revealed the treasure is fragile.
The slightest injury could kill,
And the treasure lost...forever.
Who shall discover the treasure within the clam?
Its call cannot be heard by ear alone.
Be true in your endeavor...
To cherish the treasure you find...forever.
