It's highly competitive and not for the easily offended. It also helps if you have back up income. My boyfriend is a stylist so I save money on hair and makeup but you may have to do that yourself or hire someone. You also have to be very careful about who has distribution rights to your photos, so I recommend hiring a lawyer. It really isn't a profession for people who are already poor. Taking classes in ballet, photography and art history will give you a serious edge. It's all a lot harder and more expensive than most people realize. 3nodding

Thanks. I wanted to try this cosplay the second I saw this background. The hair was surprisingly hard, since it seems like we don't have all that many brown styles, I guess (and they don't have a lot of that darker brown the hair is really supposed to be). Also, no pig items that aren't cute and tiny. But still pretty happy with it. ^^

Harris hawks are good too, but for your first bird you can only have either a red tail or a kestrel.

Kestrels are extremely delicate. Because they're small, their weight can fluctuate very easily, you have to be careful of how much you feed them. And when I say small...think "a vicious bird of prey slightly bigger than a robin." Check out this picture. Lol, small indeed.

They also can't catch much at all. For a kestrel, going out and catching a mouse or a beetle is a good day. I mean, they may be able to catch things in your backyard, but most falconers are serious hunters and want to catch things like pheasants, rabbits, pigeons, etc. Kestrels simply are too small to do that.

Most people will recommend red tailed hawks instead, since they are very hardy and versatile.

I would join a falconry forum as well, lurk around there and pick up some knowledge.

Take a test
Find a sponsor
Be under that sponsor for a period of time, usually a year or more
Get your own bird
Enjoy!

In some places it's find a sponsor and then take the test. You really need to contact your fish and wildlife department for more details on the process since it varies from each state.

Day to day life...
A site called The Modern Apprentice is a good source for this. Lots of pictures.
You need a mew, which is like an aviary for the raptor. The design is very specific as raptors have special needs, it's nothing at all like having an aviary for finches or parrots. Usually the raptor is tethered in their mew as well, but some are left to fly free (called free lofting). The mew is also very big (like the -minimum- size for a red tail is 8x4 I believe) and is almost always outside unless you have something like a kestrel.
Raptors need particular perches. There's dozens and dozens types of perches. Again, raptor perches are very different than the perches used for other birds, mainly because raptors wear a lot of equipment and it can't get caught on the perch.
Also, equipment. Raptors get to wear all sorts of things...hoods, jesses (like a 'leash' tied to their leg), and more. Most falconers put telemetry devices on their birds too so that they won't lose them as easily.
You'll have a freezer and every day you'll have to defrost some animal and feed it to your bird. It's usually something like pieces of quail, day-old chicks, pigeons, pieces of rabbit, parts of the animal you hunted the day before, etc. Really depends on what specific bird it is as far as what exactly you'll be feeding.
Your bird will get weighed around every day, if not more than that. You'll need to figure out the best 'flying weight' for the bird and make sure to keep it around that weight. You'll need an accurate gram scale.

And, of course, the hunting. I actually know very little about hunting, lol, so I won't get into any details here. I've seen people use their raptors for hunting all sorts of things.

I would recommend volunteering at a raptor rehab center to get a bit more experience with what it's like to be around them and care for them, as raptor rehabs function very similarly with the mews and the food and such.
Keep in mind that raptors are not anything like a parrot or a cat or a dog. I mean, besides just the care, their overall /mentality/ of you is really different. They don't care about you, lol. They think of you as an easy way to get food. You'll get as much affection from a raptor as you would a rock. (unless the raptor is an imprint, but eh).
