Daffey's Journal
Anything and everything, won't be daily, could be a load of rubbish...
Thursday - Across the dark sea
Aussie author Wendy Orr.
Illustrated by donna rawlins.
Making tracks series.
It's an EJF, but very interesting and well written.
This is the third Vietnamese thingamabob that I've come across in a row...
First was talking to a borrower yesterday (booking them onto a computer actually) and I said "Ahh that's a Vietnamese name." (Pham).
The kid said "Yeah! How do you know?"
Second was a DVD I watched last night (See further down for info).
Third was this book.
What the blurb doesn't go into is that Trung and his father get separated from Trung's Mum and younger sister Mai.
Rather sad, but they got away from the soldiers.
Oh no!
I've revealed some of the story.
Bad Daffey!
But seriously, it's rather moving and goes into what it was like to be a Vietanmese boat person.

They didn't look
like pirates : they
looked like ordinary
fishermen, but with eyes
as quick and glittering as
their waving knives...

Trung's adventure begins in the dead of the night.
He and his father escape the soldiers with guns.
But what awaits them across the dark sea?

DVD
Three seasons - English and Vietnamese with Englis subs (only for the Vietnamese parts unfortunately).
Rather good, even if I had seen parts before.
Nice film.
Poverty, street children, cyclo drivers, prostitution and rain, lots of rain.
Ooooh.
Whilst crapping on about DVD titles : I've ordered the Chinese ghost story trilogy.
How excellent is that? blaugh
