Full title (really) : How Hedly Hopkins did a dare, robbed a grave, made a new friend who might not have really been there at all, and while he was at it committed a terrible sin which everyone was doing even though he didn't know it.

Or as Jennings puts it : "Most of this tale is true so I guess you could call it faction rather than fiction."
It's in the JF section... which may be a mistake.
As with books written by Jennings it's aimed at boys.
It's also got "Facts of life" stuff in it.
For boys.
I don't think we need irate parents complaining that a book in the JF section talks about "stiffies" and naked women.
It's set in 1957.
Attitudes to mentally disabled people, Australian history - Aboriginals were savages and therefore the white people (James Cook - you have a lot to answer for!) were the discoverers of Australia.
Also goes into how people regard someone as different.
The "loonies", Hedly (from England), "Pommie", or even people from non-English speaking backgrounds - who are labled as foreigners.
This is from Hedley's English immigrant parents as well.
They aren't foreigners because they speak the "Queens English".
Am sending it up to the adorable Katrina, who will have a look and change it to YF... or not.
Unlike the rest of the novels by Paul Jennings, this one has no fantasy elements at all.
eg. ghosts, magic, witches, spells... that sort of thing.
In all it's a very good book.
