Skystep set a brisk pace across the forest as she headed home from an evening patrol. The Clan would be so proud of the catch had made! But first she had to get another warrior to help her drag the carcass of the elk back. Skystep knew exactly which warrior she would ask. She would ask her friend, Snowyheart. Snowyheart was one of Skystep's best friends. Snowyheart was a beautiful snow-white furred wolf. She had beautiful piercingly emerald green eyes. Her paws were jet-black. Skystep always felt very plain-furred compared to Snowyheart. Skystep had beautiful gray-black fur, charcoal-grey eyes, and jet-black tufted ears. Her mother, Rainywater, always said she was the most beautiful wolf in the pack. Yet, Skystep always thought that she was 2nd place compared to Snowyheart. As Skystep picked her way down the rocky slope that led to the well hidden crack in the cliff face, she knew she shouldn't put herself down like this. Snowyheart already has Gravelfur, her mate,she thought to herself,so there would be less competition for Shadowedsoul. Shadowedsoul was the most handsome wolf in the whole Clan. He had beautiful,piercingly ice-blue eyes, pure white paws and chestfur, jet-black fur, and a great sense of the Sight that all wolves of this particular forest possessed. Oh did I mention that all the creatures of the Forest of Secrets had great power that is greater in power than that of the most powerful sorcerer? Anyway, Shadowedsoul was the son of the herbwolf, Gingerdawn, so naturally his Sight was a little more accurate than the rest of the pack. Unlike the wild cats of the Forest of Secrets, herbwolves were allowed to mate and have pups. Shadowedsoul's father was the deputy of the Clan, Kirensight. Shadowedsoul, unlike all the other males of FierceClan, wasn't ambitious or power-hungry, he was sweet, kind, and had a very soft spot for Skystep. Although they were close, Skystep had no idea that Shadowedsoul liked her as much as she liked him. As she walked into the cave, she spotted Shadowedsoul across the wide expanse of the cave talking with his mother. As soon as he spotted her, Shadowedsoul's whole face lit up. It was like someone turned the sun's rays on high. He trotted over to her and said," Where have you been?! We were about to send a search patrol out for you!" Skystep hadn't realized she had been gone that long. " Sorry to worry you. But, I had made a great catch, even for this time of season! Come and help me bring it back." So, the two wolves set a fast pace across the open ground toward the spot that Skystep had killed the elk. When they reached the dip of a gully, Shadowedsoul began to drag the front of the kill up the slope. Skystep grabbed the back legs of the elk and they made their way back across the forest to the cliffs to their home. As they paused at the top of the cliff to rest, Shadowedsoul said to Skystep,"Um, Skystep, do you.....like me?" Skystep was so surprised that her jaw dropped and her legs felt like water. " Yes, I do like you, Shadowedsoul." Shadowedsoul's beautiful ice-blue eyes filled with relief and true, wonderful love. He lovingly, " Well, would you like to be my mate?" Without hesitation Skystep said," Of course I would!" Shadowedsoul pressed his beautiful muzzle to hers and breathed in her scent in the age-old tradition of two wolves becoming mates.
As they carefully picked their way down the steep slope of the cliff, Skystep felt a feeling she had never felt before, a feeling that something was going to happen to her Clan that would change the balance og the forest forever. Why do I have this feeling of dread?,Skystep thought to herself,what is this horrid premonition? Shadowedsoul sensed her confusion, and stopped her short. " Whats wrong Skystep? You seem a little fearful to go back to the cave." Skystep said tentavily," I-I'm a little shaky from hunger, thats all."
