After looking up shaved ice and then Kakigori(A Japanese variation on the classic snow cone), I delved deeper into the world of Japanese desserts and found a lot more tasty treats. Has anyone here had the chance to try/make a Japanese treat, and if so, do you have a favorite? (no, Pocky and such DO NOT constitute a dessert. That's like comparing M&Ms to Chocolate Cake a la mode)

I haven't had that dessert in particular, but I've had similar. The closest I've had to that would be 'Ice Kachang' when I went to Singapore.
I used to make something similar at home by freezing my favourite drinks (usually soya bean), then using a knife to shave the frozen liquid to get a nice fine texture. I'd put that into a cup and half eat/drink it with a spoon and a straw.
It would take a long time to do and would often get a bit messy, but I felt the end result was worth the effort.

I had manju and matcha for dessert at a noodle bar in Kyoto the other day, it was wonderful. Manju is a kind of little roll filled with red bean paste, very sweet. Matcha is powdered green tea, very strong and bitter. So the two go together perfectly, sweet and bitter complementing each other 3nodding

I have tried 3 kinds of Daifuku 大福(だいふく) It's like a bun with weird texture and something on the outside with red bean paste inside. The sesame one is good... but the grass one grossed me out. The grass Daifuku and mochi is called よもぎ and it's supposedly healthy. I wanted to make or try mochi 餅(もち)BUT I was only able to find kirimochi 切り餅(きりもち)which I suck at making... so haven't tried it yet. sad I also tried to make dango 団子(だんご)but I failed at making it too... (it's really simple to make and yet I failed at it razz how laughable!) So I know those and tried to make some of them... but failed. biggrin The green one looks like yomogi. You can find more picture on google if you'd like. That's kirimochi. It comes as square bricks and you're supposed to cook them... and eat... That's Sakura mochi (I didn't find good pics of mochi) Dango. Balls on a stick smile

My favorites are usually anything with anko (red bean) in them. My only exception is youkan, though (I hate its consistency) Dango are okay, tai-yaki (bean-filled, pancake things, shaped like fish) are good too. Besides Wagashi, foreign pastries are usually REALLY REALLY good in Japan, too, especially their cakes.

I don't know if you'd count this or not, but in 10th grade advisory (which was only last year), my chemistry teacher's daughter went to Japan. Some of my friends and I gave the teacher money so that her daughter could bring us back some gifts. Well, she brought us some gifts, of course, and some yummy snacks. We had Kit Kats, that were green! Mmm, they were so good. I loved them. And there were also some others foods I don't remember, but the Kit Kats were delicious. They tasted different than American ones. =3 I still have the wrappers from when we got them. x3 They're green, too, and have Japanese writing on them.

Xx_missy_goo_xX Any pictures of wagashi and any of those other desserts and such... X= I looked it up in images.google, and they're really pretty sculpted things. I hear they're usually served at tea ceremonies and are seasonal? Has anyone actually tried any? I'm curious. xd Green tea ice cream FTW!

I absolutely loved the chocolate momiji manjuu at Miyajima. Granted, all the momiji manjuu (and most kasutera manjuu) were good, but the chocolate kind was especially delicious.
I also love the wafuu sundaes you can find at various places. Then there are these an-filled pancake-like sweets as well that were very good. They're like small, thick pancakes stuffed with an, but I don't remember what they're called.
I'm not a huge fan of mochi though. I can eat it, but it really depends on what's with it. (I do like dango)

dango, mochi, mochi ice cream, japanese styled crepes [oh what i would do for one right now...], takoyaki, taiyaki...
and i love japanese bakeries...although there is no good japanese one here...maybe run by chinese or vietnamese...but, i dunno...like, when i go to japan and compare the taste of the good rare asian bakeries to the oh-so-common ones in japan...i dunno it still just tastes better :]
i miss japan :[ lol
