Unsure as to what Imperium is? Click on the image above to be re-directed to the main thread. This journal is Karma Monster's property. She has opened her private life with Laeca up to you, therefore the rule "look but do not touch" somewhat applies. You may read the entries, but it requires permission from the owner to post. Laeca is not for sale, nor will ever be. You may check the main thread for updates on ways to receive your own Substantia. ;D Thank you.

Lyre According to ancient Greek mythology, the young god Hermes created the lyre from a large tortoise shell (khelus) which he covered with animal hide and antelope horns. Lyres were associated with Apollonian virtues of moderation and equilibrium, contrasting with the Dionysian pipes and aulos, both of which represented ecstasy and celebration.
A classical lyre has a hollow body or sound-chest (also known as soundbox or resonator). Extending from this sound-chest are two raised arms, which are sometimes hollow, and are curved both outward and forward. They are connected near the top by a crossbar or yoke. An additional crossbar, fixed to the sound-chest, forms the bridge which transmits the vibrations of the strings. The deepest note was that farthest from the player's body; as the strings did not differ much in length, more weight may have been gained for the deeper notes by thicker strings, as in the violin and similar modern instruments, or they were tuned by having a slacker tension. The strings were of gut. They were stretched between the yoke and bridge, or to a tailpiece below the bridge. There were two ways of tuning: one was to fasten the strings to pegs which might be turned; the other was to change the place of the string upon the crossbar; probably both expedients were simultaneously employed.
The number of strings varied at different epochs, and possibly in different localities – four, seven and ten having been favorite numbers. They were used without a fingerboard, no Greek description or representation having ever been met with that can be construed as referring to one. Nor was a bow possible, the flat sound-board being an insuperable impediment. The plectrum, however, was in constant use. It was held in the right hand to set the upper strings in vibration; when not in use, it hung from the instrument by a ribbon. The fingers of the left hand touched the lower strings. All information (c) Wikipedia[Imperium]::[Navigation]::[Rules]::[Timeline]::[Laeca]::[Lyre]::[Avery]::[Sickle cell anaemia]::[People]::[Photo album]::[Posessions]::[Log]::[Credits]

Avery Hughes [Nickname(s)] As of yet, none [Gender] Male [Age] 26 [Appearance] Avery has unremarkable light brown hair which is kept rather messily, though that is unintentional. He knows he's in need of a haircut, but simply never thinks to get one. He has pale grey eyes, which often look rather tired. Avery's features could be considered attractive, though that would be moreso the case when regarded seperately from one another. Together these features often have a tendency to look awkward, as if Avery is not really aware of how to express himself through his features. He has fair, but peachy skin. Avery also needs to wear glasses, as he is near sighted, though he usually just wears contacts. He has a dislike for his glasses, so he will only wear them if he can't find his contacts. His dislike for glasses merely stems from his love of wearing sunglasses, otherwise he doesn't really mind them. [Personality] Generally optimistic and jocular, Avery has a good outlook on life. He believes in living life to its fullest. He also possess an over active imagination, though he doesn't usually divulge his little fantasies with people as it's usually about them. [Likes] Chinese food, books, being active [Dislikes] Hot weather, recurrent aplastic crises. [Guilty Pleasures] Dance Dance Revolution, fortune cookies, trashy romance novels, designer sunglasses [Brief History] Even though neither of his parents have it (they only have the genetic trait), Avery has a type of hemolytic anemia: Sickle cell anemia. It is a genetic disorder of the blood. While it is a serious condition, he doesn't have a terribly bad case, and has regular check ups.
Avery went to school, majoring in English literature. At the moment he is working two jobs, a day job working in a small bookstore owned by a friend of his, and a bar. He owns a small apartment, but other than his room it doesn't look very lived in, considering he's usually not actually there. His room however, is very messy. He certainly wouldn't be accused of being a neat freak.[Imperium]::[Navigation]::[Rules]::[Timeline]::[Laeca]::[Lyre]::[Avery]::[Sickle cell anaemia]::[People]::[Photo album]::[Posessions]::[Log]::[Credits]

Sickle cell Anemia Hemolytic anemia is a condition where there are not enough red blood cells in the blood. It is caused by premature destruction of red blood cells. There are a number of specific types of hemolytic anemia, one type being sickle cell.
Sickle cell anemia is an inherited disease in which the red blood cells, normally disc-shaped, become crescent shaped. As a result, they function abnormally and cause small blood clots. These clots give rise to recurrent painful episodes called "sickle cell pain crises."
These painful crises, which occur in almost all patients at some point in their lives, can last hours to days, affecting the bones of the back, the long bones, and the chest. Some patients have one episode every few years, while others have many episodes per year. The crises can be severe enough to require admission to the hospital for pain control and intravenous fluids.
Repeated crises can cause damage to the kidneys, lungs, bones, eyes, and central nervous system.
Patients with sickle cell disease need continuous treatment, even when they are not having a painful crisis. Supplementation with folic acid, an essential element in producing cells, is required because of the rapid red blood cell turnover.
The purpose of therapy is to manage and control symptoms and to try to limit the frequency of crises.
During a sickle crisis, certain therapies may be necessary. Painful episodes are treated with analgesics and adequate liquid intake. Treatment of pain is critical. Non-narcotic medications may be effective, but some patients will require narcotics.Common Symptoms • paleness • yellow eyes/skin • fatigue • breathlessness • rapid heart rate • delayed growth and puberty • susceptibility to infections • ulcers on the lower legs (in adolescents and adults) • jaundice • bone pain • attacks of abdominal pain • fever Complications • recurrent aplastic and hemolytic crises resulting in anemia and gallstones • multisystem disease (kidney, liver, lung) • narcotic abuse • splenic sequestration syndrome • acute chest syndrome • blindness/visual impairment • neurologic symptoms and stroke • joint destruction • gallstones • infection, including pneumonia, cholecystitis (gallbladder), osteomyelitis (bone), and urinary tract infection • parvovirus B19 infection resulting in aplastic crisis • tissue death of the kidney • loss of function of the spleen • leg ulcers • death A complication which can turn very serious is susceptability to ulcers, especially in the legs. Tissue can become necrotic if not treated properly, and the leg may have to be amputated. To prevent tissue deoxygenation, avoid the following • Strenuous physical activity, especially if the spleen is enlarged • Emotional stress • Environments with low oxygen content (high altitudes, non-pressurized airplane flights) • Known sources of infection Information (c) Wikipedia, Sickle Cell Information Center, and Medline Plus[Imperium]::[Navigation]::[Rules]::[Timeline]::[Laeca]::[Lyre]::[Avery]::[Sickle cell anaemia]::[People]::[Photo album]::[Posessions]::[Log]::[Credits]
