Do you all know exactly what this season is about? Well most people would say its all about giving and caring for each other. But do you know what I think its about? ITS ABOUT GETTING GIFTS!
No one cares, the goverment rather get their money or kill you to get it on christmas. People don't get off for christmas, some people steal money for gifts. All the little children are spoiled because they wake up in the morning expecting gifts from either their parents or from mr santa clause!
Everyone is guilty for this, either you are now or was at one time even I was but you know what...its one thing when you are like that but its another when the entire world is like that. My personal opinion is that people will never experience the true meaning of christmas because they are to busy working instead of getting together with the entire town to make a public meeting on the whole thing to have fun and to exchange feelings.
Sure you buy gifts because you care, well there are better ways of showing you care. Like hugs or kisses on the cheak or maybe even just telling a person how you feel they are speical to you. Do you ever consider to think that maybe this so called christmas isn't very christian after all?
You know what maybe everyone needs to take a closer look at the meaning of all this, watch the movies like the live action grinch movie for example. If everyone really cared around this time they wouldn't be thinking of gifts or giving them to other people because they apparently care. They would be all together in one big community sharing stories and such like in the old days.
I could be wrong...but...its just my opinion. You can give yours.
Discuss: christmas and why alot of people just think of gifts.
the people that do care give their opinion.
why the majority of the world only think of money and them selves
the true meaning of christmas.

I don't like Christmas anymore because of the fuss over gifts. It ruins the holiday and places stress on people, really. I thought Christmas was supposed to be enjoyable?
Which is why I purposed to my family the idea of not celebrating the common gift-giving Christmas next year. We should come up with something else to give eachother! Like... hugs or something. 3nodding

Maybe this is a little off topic but:
My friend told me that the actual decoratind of the tree started with the Norse. At a certain time of year they would go and maically slaughter people and string their guts on the tree to ward off evil. thats where the idea of tinsil came from.
I'm not sure if this is true or not but it is interesting and probably has some reality to it.

Y'know, I am quite fed up with your "people did this in the past, so we should too" stuff.
The fact is, gift giving is universal among humans. Even if you say people didn't in the past, they did. EVERYWHERE. Trade and presents are things that grace every human society.
What's more, people give gifts instead of stories. Why? Stories are done in the TV, films and books. In your beloved "old days", especially in European pagan communities, written language wasn't so present. So stories had to be told by mouth. Meaning that when someone knew a good story, everyone would want to hear it. Now the good stories are on the TV. Plus, people do still gather round and share stories. It's Christmas dinner. Christmas dinner at my house usually consists of food, drink, games and laughter with the family. Gift giving is just another way of making people happy. Damn, we're such bad people for spending all that money aren't we? rolleyes
Also, who the hell are you to tell me I should find a better way of showing I care? Every other day of the year, I show I care in different ways. Except, on Christmas, I do it through gifts. How does this make me a bad person? I don't have the money any other time of year, and why should I not do it when everyone else in my family is?

I'm not saying that you shouldn't give because it really is a good thing when you have that careing feeling with another or family. All I am saying is that alot of people expect gifts and just really forget what the true meaning of this holiday is all about. Its about caring and being with each other, not getting fancy things. That is my point that I am trying to get across.

I guess it's just a way of thanking someone for buying you a gift in the first place if you get one back, as if they spent time and money to get you one, the least you can do is return the favour.

presents are stressful and mostly take away from the meaning of x-mas. however, if the present is made and comes from the heart, then i guess it's okay.

I dunno if this means anything at all, but out of all the people I know there are VERY FEW who actually expect something for Christmas. But I enjoy giving them presents, and they enjoy giving to others... so I still think there's a good chance that the whole spirit of Christmas isn't quite dead just yet, even though it may feel that way when we become bombarded by advertising and greedy people. But around this season I tend to reflect on the joy my friends and family give me more than the presents I get or give. And a lot of them feel the same way.

I'm not sure if this is true or not but it is interesting and probably has some reality to it. It's completely fabricated. The the Vikings were violent, they didn't needlessly slaughter someone in Winter and throw them onto a tree. There is no evidence that I have heard of for Norsemen committing human sacrifices.
