Welcome to my second avatar editing tutorial!
What is this about?: This tutorial will show you, how to shade with a brush, but still make the edit look nice and clean. (This method can be used in programs with a soft brush tool, that does not react to pen pressure. Or if you are using a mouse.)
Well.. it is nice and all, but will you make something useful next time?: hihi I sure hope so!
Other editing tutorials by me: * How to make your avatar blink (animating) * How to edit eyes (2 ways)
Other tutorials by me, which are not avatar related: Raspberry-Tea's homepage -> tutorials-> choose which one to look at.
Now, shall we continiue to the actual tutorial? follow me, it is in the next posts. blaugh
Oh! and DO show me your results!!

Shading with brushes and without pen pressure
Starting words: This is not the easiest way to do it, but it has it's good sides.
!! To see the full image, please click on the smaller images. !!
Step 1:
Here goes!
Open up your avatar base, make a new layer above it, and draw the clothing on the new layer with the pencil tool (pixely and sharp)
I'll be editing a dress, but this technique works for other clothing items and hair also.

Step 2:
Now, we duplicate the clothing layer.
We will be shading on this new layer.
[You can ignore the layer duplicating part, when you have a "lock transparency" button, and know how to use it.]

Step 3:
This step is quite easy.
We just pick two colors: the brightest highlight color and the darkest shadow color.

Step 4:
OK! Now we start to shade on the duplicated clothing layer.
Take the soft brush tool, I reccomend a 1 px brush.
Pay attention to the places, where the shadow should be, and where a normal dress would have its folds. We do not want it to look like a plastic tube.

Step 5:
And now, we take the brightest highlight color and continue shading.
Pay attention on the folds!

Step 6:
Since the shading doesnt really look good, when you've only used 3 colors, we make a color palette, from the brightest highlight color to the normal dress color and from there to the darkest shadow color.
Continue shading with the new color shades.

Step 7:
When the shading is finished you may use the smudge, dodge and burn tool, to make the dress look better.

Step 8:
To show you, just how much the shading goes over the dress area, I moved the lower clothing layer above the layer, on which we shaded.( I turned the layer greenish, so you culd see the difference better.)

Step 9:
Now, you can use the magic wand or just the harp eraser tool, and erase the un needed pixels.

Step 10:
And here it is, sharp edged, and decent looking ^^
(please make better edits using this technique! Mine is just a rushed edit.)

^^ no, if the different shades of red would be on different layers, then you'd still have to merge 'em all before you can retouch 'em with smudge, dodge and burn... ^^

Allow, Meave's intrudance...
Since you draw with pencil tool, there will be no problem of whatsoever dirtiness...if you mean the pixelates thingy. Pencil don't have that KIND of dirt if that is the 'clean' you mean.
But since, you had already use pencil, why not 'preserve transparency'? Then shade on it? Preserve Transparency, won't allow you brush colour on the place where there are no colours on it(although you hover on top, no matter how hard or how long....).
???
