How to make your gaiaonline avatar blink:

Starting words: This is not the easiest way to do it, but it has it's good sides.

A tutorial for Adobe imageready. (or any other program you prefer ^^; )

!! To see the full image, please click on the smaller images. !!

Step 1: Welcome to the tut lil image!

Now, open up the avie you want to make blink..

Here is the one I'm using today (edited by me of course wink )

Tip: if the eyes are covered by hair, it is good to have the hair on a different layer above the avatar image.

Step 2: close your p-hole! >O<

Since this step is really easy, we're going to do it first ^^.

All you have to do, is: take the (freehand or the regular) maraquee tool, and select the 3 pixels, that are located in the lower part of the mouth. Then with the moving tool, move the 3 pixels up by 1 pixel. Now it allready looks like a normal closed mouth ^_^

Step 3: UHH! I'm blind!!!...

This step is quite easy.

Just create a new layer above the avatar image layer and cover up the eye area with the skin color. If the hair leaves shadows on the skin, make sure to add those in, because otherwise, it will look weird and the animation will be weird.

Step 4: Schnibble Schnibble...

Now.. first of all, select the whole eyes and duplicate 'em by pressing ctrl + j.

Then, take the maraquee tool again and select the upper eyelid (try to select the black-ish pixels and the skin above the eye only...).

Now, we move the selection down by one pixel.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Step 5: it moved!!

See, the eye looks a bit more closed now!

But this is not closed enough, so let's go on with the tutorial! ^_^

Step 6: even more closed...

This time, I selected the upper AND the lower eyelid (lower eyelid is the 1 pixel row at the bottom of the eye.), and moved the upper eyelid down by a pixel, and the lower eyelid up by 1 pixel.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Step 7: moooreee...

Since the eye never moves the upper and lower eyelid exactly as much, we are going to repeat the 4-th step. (Move the upper eyelid down by 1 pixel.)

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Step 8: Allmost closed!!

ok.. This time, we're going to move the lower eyelid up by a pixel, and let the upper eyelid stay where it is!

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Step 9: They're closed!!!...

Since moving the eyelids isnt going to give us a nice and clean looking closed eyes, we make new ones.

Take the brush tool ( I prefer the 1 px size brush ) and draw the eyelashes. They can be straight, curved up or down, depending on the mood.

Step 10: Move it!! twisted ...

This is the last step, before saving your work as a *.gif image.

Arrange your images and make sure, that the eye moves naturally. Some fases should last longer, or it might look like the person is having a cramp in his/her eye.

PS: Closing the eye lasts longer then re-opening them.

The animation might not turn out the way you wanted at first... but don't give up!

NOTE: If you are using imageready, then before you save the animation, make sure you have selected the "adaptive" and "no dither" from the optimize panel. This prevents a mayor color loss.

This is the end result I got.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, and that it helped some of you. <3

I read this tutorail awhile ago (as you know) and I used what I remembered from it and morphed it a bit for a school project. I turned in a blinking doll I made and got an "A". xd It was easy and fun! I got to doll during school and got a good grade.
Thanks, Tea~ heart
