Quoted directly from Sociology: A down-to-earth approach, by Henslin et al.

"Cults sometimes make instant headlines around the world...Cults, however, are not necessarily weird, and few practice 'brainwashing' or bizzarre rituals. In fact, all religions begin as cults.

Cults often begin with the appearance of a charismatic leader, an individual who inspires people because he or she seems to have extraordinary qualities. Finding something highly appealing about the individual, people feel drawn to both the person and the message.

A cult, then, is simply a new or different religion, with few followers, whose teaching and practices put it at odds with the dominant culture and religion.

Every cult meets with rejection from society. Its message is considered bizarre, its approach to life, strange. Its members antagonize the majority, who are convinced that they have a monopoly on the truth. The new message may contain revelation, visions, vists from God and angels, some form of enlightenment, or seeing the true way to God. The cult demands intense commitment, and its followers, confronting a hostile world, pull into a tight circle, separating themselves from nonbelievers.

Most cults fail. Not many people believe the new message, and the cult fades into obscurity. Some, however, suceed and make history. Over time, large numbers of people may come to accept the message, and become followers of the religion. If this happens, the new religion changes from a cult to a sect."

Agreed, I always thought that whenever I got into religious debates and some of my Christian friends judged younger religions such as certain Pagan religions arising now and Wicca. I just tell them that when Jesus was alive and kicking the whole world called Christianity a cult and tried to persecute the Christians, are you gonna make the same mistake as they did?

Either way though, starting out as a cult doesnt matter because religion isnt really true [or not always, or not proveable to be true].

As cults are the start of religion, I wish them dead, as I think religion is the worst corruption of the human mind possible.

And that, my friend, is why atheists can bash cults. Kk?

Cults just sound funny. They probably made that name for it because it sounded funny. Club is the lowest form of religion. ^^.

I wish they'd go away to, religion is annoying but it is still interesting to study =P but we have enough religions to study and enough pagan gods so I am good.

[[I'd never thought of it like that, but now thanks to your post, I don't see why I've never made that assumption myself.

I always thought that shamanism is the first stage of religion, at least in history...

What was it? That quote in Dogma. About not having beliefs. They can't change. Have ideas.

Cults/religions are quite literally dog-fed beliefs to the masses.

Christianity was a cult for a while. It was like, 300 ad before anyone thought it could ever be a real world religion.

I know of cult in a little 'Episcopal' church. But what was really happening there were murder, rape, kidnap, sexual intercourse with other animals, and such as that in the basement.

But, then, that was the occult. A slight difference, actually...

Hmmm....no... Not really.

The Bible was written in 130 A.D. or so. I'd place the mark of it around that time.

It seems all gatherings that are called cults are religious in nature, but could a philosophy or way of life be considered a cult if it is practiced by a group of people? I'm having trouble thinking of a good example, maybe there aren't any...

Ok, example: The famous ancient eastern martial arts schools that practiced strict diets, exercising and meditation, they did not learn about "divine laws" or the "meaning of life"; although many did teach that as well, but more teaching how to gain an understanding and control of your body and mind. (The reason I'm going into some detail here is to set a clear example)

I really have no idea, any opinions?

I guess every religion starts out as a cult, but some are really stupid and pointless

Of course each religion starts out as a cult... What a cult is, is merely a sligh drivation from a religion. For instance, let us trace the semetic religions. Jews are the root of both Islam and Christianity. Of of Christanity spirals the hundreds of subgroups Including Catholisism, The Episcopelians, Mormons, Jehova's Witness's, Baptists... etc. For Islam, there are the Hard line fanatics (who by now are indeed acult rather than a true religion as they had originaly started... Ironicaly) then there are the Sunni's and the Shi'ites. Eventually these mini divisions grow, and spawn cults of thier own. However... Once again, I am not a big fan of the Dogma's of any religion or cult.
