OK, I'll kick it off with my opinion. I believe we are omnivores, like bears. We have always eaten opportunistically. Today the bushmen of Southern Africa eat roots, fruits when in season, meat when the men can bring something down, and honey when it can be found.
Our intestines are not short like a carnivores -- short so the meat can be digested but not spoil. Strictly vegetarian animals like the horse have incredibly long intestines, as the vegitation they eat is hard to digest, and needs all the various stomaches (cows), pouches and so forth to get the nutrients.
Bears and humans (and I suppose other animals) have a mid length intestine, as they evolved to eat both meat and vegetables. They cannot digest the leaves and so forth that gorillas, giraffs and elephants (for a few) can eat, nor the grasses and hay that cows and horses eat. And we cannot live on meat alone, as it does not provide all the nutrients we need. Another omnivore is the pig, which is an opportunistic eater.
We can, however, with knowlege, become vegetarians if we select carefully what we eat so we get the proteins provided by meat.
So, what do you think we are by nature? And what can we become if we so choose?

Humans are Omnivores we once needed both to survive and get our nutritional values Proteins fats and cholesterols from meats and such and Vitamins and fiber and of course our lovely plant sugars from well duh plants but in modern society we are no longer hunter gatherers and with all the suppliments, enriched and geneticly modified foods we no longer need meat and animal products to get our proteins cholesterol and fat meat and animal products have become a luxury that should only be eaten occasionally most vegetarians and vegans dont eat meat for either health reasons or to boycott factory farming which has dominated the food market when an animal has to be locked up in a cage instead of out in the wild grazing I feel that humans have then lost the privelage and the need to hunt and eat them

Omnivores, of course. biggrin
Just because they're vegetarian doesn't mean they're not omnivores. Being an omnivore tells you what you CAN eat, not what you HAVE to eat.
Oh, and what about insectivores??? Humans can be insectivores too... It's just nowadays no one wants to eat bugs, really. sweatdrop

Even people who choose to become vegetarians, even vegan, are still omnivores, because they're bodies still need the proteins proteins and vitamins only found in meat. 3nodding heart &hearts heart

Yoroko-chan heart &hearts heart Omnivores!

Well, obviously humans are omnivores not herbivores. But given a wide enough variety of foods, we can function quite well as vegetarians. The same cannot be said about functioning as carnivores whee

Hmm, well naturally, we're Omnivores, but unlike our ancestors, we have a choice, in what we become. You can choose to eat the flesh of slain animals, to get what you need, or you can simply take a few pills, while you eat the fruit of the land. Our hunting in past, was based on need, now it is simply based on desire.

heart Omnivores! I don't think we can't live without greens. I wonder if anyone has done a study on that? Hmm. Isn't that weird we can live without meat and not without greens! heart
