First own thread in the guild, yay! >< Anyhow, recetly my mind has been increasingly set on the idea of honoring my hair with dark purple synth dreads. sort of like these, only not quite: Does anyone have any kind of exp from this kind of thing? what sort of maintenance (sp) do they need?

Hehe. My sis had extensions put in her hair.. However she made the horrible mistake of leaving them in too long. The hair glue that you use to keep them in there killed most of her hair.. Luckily her hair grew fast so she looks decent again.
As for maintainance, You dont have to do much.. (at least not in my experience) Although you might want to wash them a bit more than you would usually do. I beleive theres a special product you can buy. Either that or a friend of mine uses apple vinegar to keep hers clean.
Not much I can offer you..

I belive those thoses ones in the picture are just falls. They are like hair peaces you just tye ontop of your pre existing buns. A b***h to keep IN your hair but easy to take out and very reuseable. If you want dreads that are attaced to your head. You have to brade them in, (only idiots use glue) wash gentley once a week, and dont EVER EVER EVER use hot water or a blow dryer. I recommend Falls becuse they are easyer to take care of, and are slightly cheaper then a full head of syn dreads. http://quinnster.fqdn.net/ should be your bible for such hair care, they do a DAM good job of explaining things

You can buy dread falls at www.hairoglyphs.com
They're expensive but I'm sure they're well worth the money.

Some extensions just have rubberbands or little cmbs so you can attach them without weaving them into your hair. I don't know how well it'd work on short hair, but it might be worth looking into.

I don't think that extensions look that good. The sudden change of length of hair doesn't normally suit or look very realistic. Also its hard to take care of, they have to be removed after a few weeks and its hard to keep them from tangling and staying tangled when you wash them.
However dreds do look cool, my mate had proper dreads put into her hair, I think she washed them as well, its just harder to manage. However her hair shunk because of them so now she has really really short hair and it took ages for them to come out.
I'm not sure about synth dreads, I do know a girl who has them but I don't know about the maintance or anything, I just know she's had them for about a year.

How the hell did I miss this thread? Damnit, that's what you get for galavanting off with freaks of the night.
Okay, This is a pretty basic bare-facts thing for dreads and falls and the differences.
It is worthy of note that putting dreads in hurts, even fake ones (except falls). As a rule, if it doesn't hurt it's not being put in tight enough. Dont' worry, it only hurts for a maximum of 48 hours after they've been put in if you're not used to them. They will feel strange at first and if they're synth or wool they will feel heavy but you'll get used to it, then all you have to do is love your knew hair stylee.
They're also fantastic for festivals because you only need to wash them every week (for new real dreads you must NEVER wash them for at least two weeks after they've been put in or they'll fall out) and there's no need to brush or style them.
Synth dreads:
Made out of synthetic hair eg. plastic. To make them it is best to ask help from a friend if it's your first time, preferably one that has made them before. To make them you have to seal them with heat (hot water in this case) which means that they are NOT hair-dryer friendly. Put a straightner or hair dryer to these babies and you're going to have a lump of plastic melted to them and your head. Not a good look. They are, however, very easy to put in and require little maintainence except for tightening them.
Real dreads:
Basically your own hair knotted into dreads. It takes quite a while to do and like all dreading hurts like hell. Don't get these too wet without wringing them out, they get mildewy. Up sides are it doesn't cost anything extra unless you're having it done by a professional (that wants paying, if it's a friend then it's all good). They CAN be taken out, it just takes a long time and a lot of patience. (and yet more pain)
Wool dreads:
There are two types of wool dreads, there's wool roving which looks similar to and is put in the same way as synth dreads. Or, wool plaits/coils (which I have) - wool (as in knitting wool) plaited or spun round into coils.
Both are pretty time consuming to make, and, if they get wet is is EXTREMELY important that you dry them quickly ie wring them out then get a hair dryer to them or you're going to smell of wet sheep and there is the threat of mildew. Also easy to take out because they're just plaited in.
Dread falls:
The most easy and interchangeable of the dread styles. Basically you just tie them into your hair and voila, instant dreads. Down side is they're a real b***h to actually keep in your head, I advise using a lot of hair pins.

You could probably find instructions somewhere online on making your own falls, but that might be hard to do...
