The hug was...
...a welcome back after twelve years.
  ...something more.
  (I'm confused.)

Just a poll to see what you guys think. Was the hug in Prisoner of Azkaban just a hug or was it more than that? If you have anything else to say on this, please post. I'm quite curious as to the mindset of this guild.

I think it was a bit of both really.

In the movie it was more like a glomp than a hug, which was neat.

I think in all reality it was like two friends, really good friends, seeing each other after so long and hardship just... letting it go basically. A reaffirmation of their friendship and trust.

I agree.... even though I voted for something more(because I would love for it to be so) we have to face the fact that it is called a "brotherly" hug

It was a welcome back. Nothing more. Of course, I did take the line, "Together?" as something more.

I know. I watched it over and over... and the 'quarreling like an old married couple!' bit.
Heehee.
That bit was the highlight of the film for me!

I like the 'quarreling like an old married couple' too biggrin . As much as I wish it was something more, I think it was just a genuine welcome back I'm sorry type of hug. Later on though, they were more than just brotherly hugs. wink

In the book, it seemed pretty tame.....out of all the subtexts in the books, the hug was the least to me. I'll agree with some of the others here, though, in that it looked far more.....intense in the movie. The film POA actually inserted lines that flirted with the romance back-story (the whole "married couple" bit) which I found very surprising.

You know, I read a book last week about homosexuality in the 1960's, a time when it was still illegal in many places (in England, in particular.) Writers at the time, when talking about gay subjects, would often present two male lovers as being "brothers" and explain away any acts of physical affection as being "brotherly" in order to avoid shocking the censors. Joe Orton, one of my favorite playwrites, actually wrote a radio play about two "brothers" who were actually lovers.

I don't know if this was on purpose or not, but JK Rowling HAS to have had come across this kind of situation before. As a Brit obsessed with literature, she must have at least read about this popular plot device. The more I look at it, the more I think that, consciously or not, she really did put something in to the whole Sirius/Remus thing.

Suddenly, that "brotherly" hug looks much less so.
