The Crags

They arrived at the floor of the Scar, where a long, jagged path awaited them. The floor was fissured, upheaved and hewn years ago by the Rift's volatility, with much of it a pile of discarded, loose stone. Footing would prove a challenge.

The space was dim. Cut off from the rugose sky by the two halves of the Scar, which rose like twin tyrants over their craggy hallway, they had only their lanterns to see them through the area. If any of the team drew close to the walls, they would see black pockmarks of caves, their sizes variable, and the lantern's shine would refract off beady eyes sheltered further in the holes. Clicks and howls and chirps and screeches and baritone roars each echoed through the space as youma came out of dormancy. They were growing aware of their new treats.

High above, on latticed, precarious walkways, the Tracking team made their way. They were first point of contact should the worst befall the Combat team. Kamacite was on point for that role, though any General could make the call if Kamacite was indisposed.

In the youma aeries and labyrinthine hollows, just above the Tracking team, the Interrogation team lurked. They were the last point of contact. If Combat team needed them, too, then the mission was guaranteed a failure.

They had a long trek before them, for the Scar drew out for leagues. Each foot of it was covered in youma, their ichor, their dust, and a fine mist of mucous that hung dewy in the air. Everyone had their orders — they were to fight their way to the other side, and lure the youma that Axinite wanted scalped of scales.

Quote:
Welcome to the Combat thread!

Please refer to this post for information on HP and attacking! Your characters will be spending a good deal of time fighting their way through this dank, disgusting, slovenly hole at the bottom of the Scar!

The Combat team will gain clues about the target as youma are defeated, but be careful — it is possible for the Combat team to get overwhelmed. Please feel free to ask questions, improvise, and inspect the environment as characters move through the lengthy Scar.

For now, the youma are waking up to these intruders. The next prompt will occur approximately 24 hours from now.

Please remember to quote Strickenized if any corrupted senshi takes their starseed out, or if anyone has energy orbs or starseeds on their person.

Big thank you to Guine for the banners!
Good luck, and happy hunting!

Quote:
LEADER ABILITY: Kamacite -- Disorientation. Kamacite's brilliant robes and flashy magic are particularly harsh on these cave-dwelling youma's senses. Once per prompt, this ability can be invoked to redirect a youma's damage role to another target. Quote Strickenized when used.

Corrupt Eternal Kamacite

There was no one on his team that he knew. Cymophane had been placed with Faustite, and Roselite, whom he didn’t even realize was going to be part of the mission, was with Jet and that horrible Aquamarine.

And yet, Faustite trusted him to take a group of very edible Senshi and Officers into the most treacherous part of the mission. Had it been just himself, he wouldn’t have been so worried, but he couldn’t help but wonder if this was really just a horrible idea.

The last time he faced this youma, he’d had a team of people he knew and trusted. Now…?

Kamacite glanced warily from the Generals, half-youma, other Officers, Senshi, and cat that had been told should defer to his leadership. How long would it take for them to decide he wasn’t worth the effort to follow? There were so many strong personalities on his team that he was almost certain they would break rank at some point and they would all end up dead.

Cymophane would be upset by his way of thinking and probably try to offer him some encouragement. Fortunately, Cymophane wasn't there. He didn't want one of his only friends to be used as bait, even if he did so himself, willingly.

For now, it was just a matter of making their way into the Scar.

“Please watch your step,” he forced himself to say as he brushed a rock out of the way with his foot, already over alert and jumpy from being in the Rift.

General Titanite

Mmmm. Delightful. Titanite's disgust was palpable as she looked at the terrain- and that was a lot coming from her, considering some of the places she had lived with her mother in Cairo. The kickboxer pulled all ~six feet of herself up and put her hands on her hips, squinting along the scuzzy landscape and up the walls.

The senshi had been asked to cut their hair, and Titanite had braided and kirby-gripped her own close to the scalp so it would be out of the way. She should have volunteered to do the same for some of the others, but... well. She didn't think of it. But with six older sisters who had let her play with their manes, Shahar could braid hair like a professional. Too bad braiding was about the only thing she could do well with hair.

She stepped up next to Kamacite, shouldering her pack. "This Scar is a lovely locale," she said cheerfully to the group's leader, her accent thick, "I hope the rent in this area is very cheap." If she threw in a few curse words in her mother tongue under her breath, was anyone here able to speak Arabic well enough to say for sure? (And if they could, that would be fantastic.)

Stepping out ahead on long legs, the General looked a bit more up, than down; she wasn't worried as much about tripping as she was about the certainty of youma clacking their way out of their terrible little bedrooms in the mountain. "If anyone is in need of safety pins or anything to tie back hair or garments, by the way, I put some in my pack." One never knew when they may need a safety pin, and even her own hair might come undone in the heat of battle and need re-pinning. And some of the senshi seemed to have very loose and flowing garments.

Basic Corrupt Calaverite

It was kind of a really long and really boring walk. Calaverite was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for the beginning of it. He was excited to be in the Rift again and to see what creatures could be found in its depths. He was excited to be on a team and have a mission, and this should all be very new and interesting. But his mood deteriorated with the passing time and lack of engaging things happening around him.

He only recognized a few on his team: just Cervantite and Wolframite, so there weren't a whole lot of people he was interested in talking to. Nothing leapt out at them for a fight, and even the Rift's landscape started to look very samey after an hour or two.

They should all be keeping a careful eye on their surroundings, but there were like a dozen other people in very close proximity to him doing just that. Cala was half hidden behind the taller members of the group anyway, including Cervantite to his side, so it didn't seem like it could possibly hurt anything if his gaze and his attention wandered. He slipped his arm through Cervantite's, using the other senshi as a form of direction and stability as they moved.

He liked going to the Rift, but it probably wouldn't be that great of a place to live in. Seemed like there wasn't a great abundance of tv or chicken nuggets or microwaves.

But maybe the goop puddles were swimmable? Maybe the charged storms were pretty? He liked when it rained in DC. He wondered if it rained here... It didn't seem like it did in Negaspace, but there was stuff on the ground here, and that had to come from somewhere, and-

He blinked as he peered around Cervantite's side. There were things here! Things in the walls! "Cervantite, look!" He yanked the other senshi's arm, twisting him and pointing to a glowing set of eyes that vanished all too quickly. "There was something there!"

Lt Arsenolite

Arsenolite couldn't help grinning and ruffling his own short hair at her. "Unless the rift makes my hair spontaneously grow, I don't think I'll need any," he joked, "But if the rift does do that, uh. I'll let ya know."

He took in a deep breath, scanning their surroundings. Lionel had gone to a different group, and he wasn't sure Ashanite was even on this mission, so he didn't have anyone he could talk to on a friendly level. He'd have to—ugh—try to make them. In the middle of all this crap. God, the rift sucked and he hadn't even been here very long yet.

Still, it was almost beautiful here, in a way. Even with the youma he could hear in the distance, scuttling around. It was all very exciting to him, but he tried to remain as level-headed as he could on the outside.

General Benitoite

The trip down to the scar wasn't really eventful, as he expected really. The bag he'd packed, with food in it, and the one given out were easily shouldered by the petite General as he walked along with the group. Somewhere in the middle of the pack he was fairly easy to miss, mostly due to his size. He didn't much stand out, aside from the aura he gave off....though in this crowd it wasn't even that stand out.

Keeping a close eye on the senshi in their group he was planning to keep them as safe as possible, and jump in to save one or more of them if a youma decided to try and make a meal out of them. He knew youma weren't all that fond of senshi...corrupted or otherwise. Glancing over the group he found himself drifting closer to Wolframite, figuring it was a nice idea to keep close to the Captain.

"I'm glad to see you." A nodding of his head to the half youma. "Let's hope this ends in sucess." He wouldn't hope for this not to end without bloodshed, he doubted that was possible

Super Corrupt Miyamoto

Long hair wasn't a bad thing, his hair was normally on the long side, but having it as long as he did when powered up was just plain dangerous. There was n o way around that. Whatever had decided corrupt senshi got long hair was out to get them, or watch them trip and fall on their faces, either way he was not impressed nor was he pleased. To have it cut nice and short, short than he normally wore his hair, was nice. It was also safe.

Knowing corrupt senshi weren't the most liked by youma he kept himself close to Wolframite, surprised to find the other in their mix group, while he trailed frost and chill air with him. "You've been doing well?" Questioning in a whisper, not wanting other peoples attention on himself. A quick glance to the ashen blond next to his Captain, he didn't know who they were but he was sure by the end of this he would. He was also certain by the end of this he'd dislike youma more than he already did. It wasn't that he didn't respect them, he did, but he didn't like how dangerous youma were to himself. He'd never tried to hurt them.

Focusing back to looking ahead of them his eyes kept darting to the sides, where he knew youma were hiding and watching them all. They were just waiting, he was sure of it. If they could get in attack he had no doubt that they would. If there was one weakness...it would be found and exploited by the youma down here. Why was it that he was risking himself like this? Ahh, yes...hje remembered. Damn it/

Corrupt Sailor Albite Senshi of Retribution

It was the strangest thing in the world to Albite, to wander about without the copious and heavy amount of dreads he usually carried in his powered form. What remained from what he’d sawed off, he kept bundled tightly atop his head, wrapped with the wonderful cowry scarf that he’d gotten from the merchant. The slight scent of the sea that wafted from it, a soothing balm, against the miasma kicked up in the fetid ichor and ashen laden air.

Heeding kamacite’s warning he was careful with his steps, unable to repress a snort of laughter at the tall drink of waters off the cuff jokes. His appreciation for the General built like a damned Amazon was immediate. Anyone who could offer a brief bit of levity in the overwhelming dimness of the place was A+ in his book.

Albite skirted by a cropped redhead, shot him a smirk for his comment, and made to sidle up just behind Kamacite and Titanite - ever mindful of the uneven, crumbling terrain, and the pockmark lined walls that held the increasingly restless denizens of the deep.

“Hey Kamacite! Real quick - fore we’re in the thick of it? Wanna know if I can request a meeting with you, after…“ A vague wave to indicate their current predicament. The ‘if we survive’ left unsaid, a silent pause that needn’t be filled to be understood. There were rules for saying things in places like this he was sure - the sort that applied to horror movies.

Albite knew he should’ve asked before, when there’d been time at the meeting. So distracted between the cat - and then the prep of it all - he’d not wanted to bother the busy, bright robed, eternal. Poor guy had enough on his plate already, leading them in.

“No need to decide on it now, yeah? Just wanted to put it out there.” Albite did his level best to offer to offer a reassuring grin to the man. Readjusting his pack slung on a single strap across his bare shoulder, while he moved in tow, just behind them.

Eternal Senshi

Lieutenant Carnallite

For much of the journey, Carnallite kept her silence. There was nothing to say on the way there, and nothing to say once they arrived. They all knew their mission. They had their orders.

She spent most of her time looking over her teammates, committing their image to memory whether or not she bothered to learn their names, sizing them up in an effort to determine who would prove themselves capable, and who never should have set foot in the Rift in the first place.

Carnallite stuck close to Bloodstone. She didn’t always agree with him, but she knew his strength and his abilities.

The Senshi leading them? She knew nothing about him. Apparently, no one else did either. But he was experienced enough to reach Eternal, so there must be something about him that made him worthy of this mission.

Unless Senshi weren’t promoted by the same standards.

Unless there were no standards.

Faustite, who seemed to be an adequate General, trusted the Eternal for this. Axinite trusted the Eternal for this, if he was the one who cleared the mission.

The Eternal Senshi’s success or failure would ultimately reflect on them.

“Ready?” she muttered under her breath to Bloodstone.

Youma were lurking. It would not be long.

Captain Bloodstone

Most of the people there, Bloodstone did not expect to make it for long. Sure, some of the Generals might scrape by, and he and Carnallite obviously knew what they were doing, but the Corrupted Senshi? It was only a matter of time until they were overwhelmed and eaten.

For now, Bloodstone kept an eye on the other Generals, trying to decide which of them would be most suited for taking over once the Senshi in bright robes either had a heart attack, or was otherwise indisposed.

Not taking any chances, Bloodstone already had his pick out and was preparing himself for when the youma came to attack.

Bloodstone didn’t say anything in return to Carnallite, but he did nod. He could hear and feel the youma crawling around them. Maybe they were just curious for now, but soon…

Corrupt Eternal Kamacite

Kamacite practically jumped when the tall and cheerful General stepped up next to him to joke about rent prices. He just stared up at her for a moment, trying to decide if she was just trying to lighten the mood, or if she didn’t realize how dangerous things were already. She was a General, so surely she knew. Lucky for him, he didn’t have to make small talk, because she seemed like she was ready to push forward.

He tried not to get too flustered when it was clear that there were those who already didn’t think he knew what he was doing. Like he hadn’t spent more time than he cared to remember in the Rift, under the purple haze and watchful yellow eyes of a hungry half-youma General.

The comment about tying back garments might not have been directed at him, but she only offered right after speaking to him. It might have been sincere and generous, but this was the Rift, and he purposefully kept the flowing robes as extra protection.

More places to bite with less chance of blood being drawn.

While he didn’t quite jump the first time, he definitely jumped when the even taller Senshi spoke to him. Kamacite clutched at his heart, as if that could help slow it down (it never did), and turned to look up at this other Senshi instead.

“Um,” was the most eloquent thing he could process to say at the moment, apparently. And his attempt at not being flustered failed and he could feel his cheeks flooding with color. Fantastic. “Okay,” he finally said, feeling stupid about it.

Captain Atheneite

Atheneite marveled again at the rift, it was as always very awe-inspiring. She adored how rough nd tumble everything was. It was like stepping onto some wild and hostile alien planet. The things that lived here must be hardened by this environment. Anything that could survive here deserved respect. She wondered if she could ever live down here. The idea of the fight against the natural elements thrilled her. But all of that could be set aside for a later time. For now she had a job to do.

She looked to the general she had decided to stick by for this mission. "So do you think they'll give us much of a fight." She asked Lopezite motioning towards the youma around them. She was on edge waiting, hoping, the youma would attack them but then again maybe the creatures would be wise enough not to attack a group of their masters. She looked up at the eternel leading the group, she wondered what trait made him worthy of leading their little group over any of the other generals. Not that she intended to challenge his leadership at least as long as he didn't make any stupid decisions but still it weighed on her mind just what the reasoning was.

[Captain Marialite]

Well. At least they didn't have to climb.

That was, perhaps, the best Marialite could say of any part of this descent into the Rift so far. Still, she intended to cling to whatever optimism she could find! Here she wa,s in the Rift, surrounded by allies, and she was a Captain because she'd impressed Hessonite and she had knives now.

Surely, there was nothing that could go too wrong, with all of them here.

When the (gorgeous, tall, holy hell Marialite was too bisexual for the Negverse) General--Titanite--offered pins, she moved over to her and Kamacite.. "Could I grab some of those, actually? My hair's just like this naturally, and I like it as long as it is, but it'll get in the way, and I can't cut it without losing it forever." She looked a little sheepish for asking, but she did reach back and start to wind her braids into a single, more tamed and tucked style.

She quirked her eyebrows at the redhead Lieutenant's joke. "Oh, man, if the Rift makes officers grow their hair long, I dunno what I'll even do."

-----------

[Lieutenant Nagyágite]

Here they were, in the Rift. Nagya inhaled, and grinned. As much as he didn't like spending too much time down here, there was something that felt right about being in this rampant place of chaotic energy--something that called to the youma inside him and made him breathe easier.

He wasn't an idiot. he knew they were in danger here.

He moved over to their glorious leader, Kamacite, in his bright robes, and gave a nod of acknowledgement to the tall General and Corrupted Senshi nearby.

"Sir," he said, with all the politeness he rarely bothered to manage, "thought I'd give you a quick brief on my capabilities, since they're a bit different form the average Lieutenant's, in case that might help with your planning?" Better to be up front, and let Kamacite know exactly what assets he had on the table. There was no need to hide what he could do from his own people.

[Corrupt Sailor Cleeia]

Cleeia sort of wanted to cry.

He was separated from his sister, surrounded by a bunch of strangers, and the Hall of Shadows had eaten someone.

Cleeia had been close enough that he could have reached out and grabbed the Senshi that was pulled in, but he was frozen with the fear of getting dragged in himself if he tried. He wasn't going to die for someone else's mistake, and so after a moment of agonizing indecision, he'd firmly looked away, so as not to witness it or draw the eyes of the monsters in the wall onto himself.

Especially because he, too, was a Senshi, and they were supposedly very tasty to everything down here.

He was, at least, well equipped for walking, and he'd had no hesitation about shearing his hair to its civilian length. Yes, sure, he liked how pretty he looked with his hair corrupt-long, but it would get in the way. At least he had sensible boots and a fairly no-frills uniform, even if it was also no-armor.

God, he hoped monsters had feelings, so he could make his magic work on them.

Lt Arsenolite

Arsenolite chuckled, grinning at Marialite. "Probably get a lot more pins," he suggested, hooking his thumbs in his pockets. "Your hair looks nice, though. Arsenolite, by the way."

He didn't acknowledge the senshi that had smiled at his joke. A laugh was a laugh, sure, but in his opinion, so far? All senshi (except for, of course, Lionel, and it kind of killed him that his friend wasn't on this team with him) were rather dumb and shouldn't have even been here. They were bringing way too much risk into play.

He did hope that General Titanite had at least liked his joke. He needed to mesh well with the group. Especially higher officers.
