Aurick

Pronunciation: AO-Riy-K Race: Lightning Gender: Male Occupation: Baker / Pastry Chef Significant Other: N/A Parents: Children: None
Personality: While not 'dumb' by any means, Aurick also isn't the brightest of boys. He's slow to catch on to more complex conversations and prefers to keep things simple. Being raised by such strong minded women has been him a respectful guy with a genuinely positive outlook on life. It's extremely hard for him to meet anyone he doesn't like, and even then you have to actively try to get him to hate you for Aurick not to give a second chance.
He’s a man who means well, intends to put good out in the world, and has unwavering optimism in the face of adversity. Aurick is just one of those guys that likes being supportive to others without expecting anything in return. That often leaves him with the short end of the stick, but he doesn't tend to care; so long as he knows he's tried he's happy enough.
Interesting Facts EATS FIVE DOZEN EGGS AND IS ROUGHLY THE SIZE OF A BARGE Will 100% stop at every cute thing he sees and appropriately shower it with affection, including people Can, and will, lift anything heavy in sight just to flex

History
Aurick is the eldest child born to two very loving women.
His mother, Petra, is a teacher from a well respected lightning family. Her father is a member of the academy whose scholarly advancements brought a certain amount of clout to their family name. While she herself never made academy status, Petra was always held to a higher degree and was expected to marry well because of it. Instead, she fell hard for a pudgy Geian baker named Mya.
Mya’s family may have been average compared to Petra’s, but the large swarm of Geian’s are warm and full of love. While the main bulk of her family helped to run a farm east of Hafelle, some moved into the city to help run the modest family bakery, Mya included. At first her flirtations with Petra were just that; harmless fun between two young women. When it became obvious that the two were getting closer it was only a matter of time before they married and started discussing children.
At first they thought about adopting, then talk of a surrogate was brought up. Since both wanted to carry a child they enlisted the services of the same surrogate; a lightning male who was close friends with Petra. It took a while, but eventually their efforts bore fruit! Petra was pregnant...and then, a month later, so was Mya!
Marriage between two pregnant women was far from easy, but they managed. All of their struggle was worth it once their children were born; a little lightning boy, Aurick, and a precious hybrid girl, Astra.
Over the years the women would go on to carry five more children; three from Mya and a pair of utterly spoiled twins from Petra, all from the same surrogate. Because of his ‘relationship’ with the family, the lightning man went from being a vague figure known as Mr. Fairworth to ‘Uncle Tomas’ practically overnight. Seeing as he had no desire for a family of his own, outside of his precious husband, he was more than happy to help his friends out however he could. While others may have viewed it as ‘strange’ Aurick grew up with this sort of ‘normality’ in his life, and utterly accepted it. Instead of fussing on it he did his best to be the best big brother he could, and to live his life as freely as possible!
Siblings sorted by age Aurick - (Same age as Astra) Astra - (Same age as Aurick) (sister / Half Geian ) Devyn - (brother / Half-Geian) Lavinia - (Sister / Half-Geian ) Calix - (brother / Half-Geian ) Isador - (brother/lightning) Ezekiel - (brother/lightning)

Physical Description: I'd like his hair to be styled like this and give him a lil scruff too.
I'd also like to add a few embellishments to his apron kind of like this. Nothing super fancy, but I'd also like to see a little pocket with maybe a rag or something he can wipe his hands on. For the little embroidery spot in the middle I'd like it to be a cupcake or a cake; something light and cute because of his work in the bakery. Colors for the apron can be lighter to compensate.
As for his outfit completely CC. I just ask that it be different from his previous stages to spice it up a little.
Body Type: Brawny. Thick boy. Eats five dozen eggs every morning

Prentice Solo 1
While it was far from abnormal to see Mr. Fairworth visiting his home Aurick still found it difficult to explain to his friends. The fact that this ‘old family acquaintance’ was actually the very one who had fathered eight children between the two women was often something of a curiosity for those unfamiliar to the family. Most assumed he had remained a father figure when in reality he barely saw the children. At best he would see them in passing, say a few kind words, and make his way back home. Mr. Fairworth was far from unkind; he was a smart, pleasant man who had never been shunned from their home and yet...Aurick still wasn’t sure what to think of him.
Maybe it was the fact that this man had sired him was what left Aurick stumped. He’d never really been able to get a good read out on Fairworth. In his younger years he’d happily fallen into the older man’s arms when he visited, allowed himself to be spun around the room and laughed along with his jokes. Now he wasn’t sure whether to treat him like an Uncle, an older brother, the old shopkeep or something more.
Seeing Tomas Fairworth was like looking at a picture of what Aurick could be. He was just as tall, while not quite as muscular, with the same facial crystals that most of the children shared. His eyes were a lighter shade of indigo, his hair a deep rusty color, and always styled just so. Mr. Fairworth taught at the same academy as Petra so it left little wonder as to how they had met, but to have retained such a relationship over the years without it being muddled was...honestly, pretty impressive. He knew his boundaries, as did Aurick’s mothers, and the other Mr. Fairworth so order was always maintained. Tomas’ husband had never wanted children of his own so when Tomas had mentioned being a donor for the two women he hadn’t seen anything wrong with it. Whether or not he planned on his husband siring more than two children Aurick had no idea.
Aurick had only seen the other Mr. Fairworth twice in his life. The pair lived on the far side of Valmon and while it took Tomas a bit to travel to work he was happy enough with his job. His husband, Verys, always looked so tense to Aurick. Not unhappy, just...stiff. The pair made for a handsome couple when he’d seen them together. Both dressed as if coin meant nothing to them and they had been so clearly in love that Aurick felt genuinely happy for them. When Verys had caught sight of him though...something darkened. His smile didn’t quite reach his eyes and when Tomas introduced them he seemed colder. All of the laughter and excitement he’d shown his husband had faded away. It wasn’t until Aurick was much older that he realized perhaps Verys was only happy with this arrangement while he couldn’t see the children. ‘Out of sight, out of mind’ as it were. He’d worried that it was hurting Tomas’ marriage, and when he brought it up to his mother Mya she’d just laughed.
”They’re fine, honey, don’t worry. We told Tomas that if things ever got dodgy he could leave, but he’s said time and time again that it’s okay. Verys is just...peculiar.”
Maybe she was onto something? Aurick hadn’t really thought about it all that much over the years, but now that Tomas was leaving the house he couldn’t help pondering it over. It was later in the evening, far later than he normally visited, and both of his mother’s were kindly waving him off. Whatever had happened behind the door to their bedroom was their business, but Aurick had to wonder how much about this Verys really cared about. Was he jealous? Spiteful? Did he feel like he was being left out or abandoned? Or was Aurick just overthinking things?
“Aurick.” Tomas greeted on his way out. The closer the other man got the more obvious it became that he’d fathered Aurick’s siblings. “Where’s your coat? It’s freezing tonight.”
“Eh, don’t need one. I’ve got plenty to keep me warm.” He patted his gut with a grin. While it was pretty chilly he’d only stepped out for a bit, and had no intention of spending any longer outside if he didn’t have to. “You should be more worried about yourself; those thin sleeves in this wind? You’ve still got half a city to walk.”
“I know, I know, but I...lost track of time.” A dark flush covered his cheeks before Tomas cleared his throat. For a moment he acted as if he were going to say something else before taking a deep breath and taking a step down the front stoop. “Have a good evening, Aurick; keep up with your studies.”
He was almost completely off the landing and back onto the sidewalk before Aurick called out. “Is mama Petra trying to have another baby?”
Sputtering, Tomas turned towards Aurick with a look that bordered horrific. “Wha- no, no. Actually, I was just stopping by to tell them that this was going to be the last time I could...help them.” He said delicately. “We’ve all agreed that once Mya has this baby that’s going to be it. Now, I...I really should be going.”
Aurick watched him walk off into the night with a furrowed brow. While he wasn’t exactly upset that this would be his last sibling, the thought of never seeing Tomas again was...unsettling. He’d been such a steady part of his childhood that Aurick wasn’t sure what living a life without his visits would look like. It’ll be fine; it’s all going to be okay. After all, it wasn’t like he was losing a parent. Just...a close friend and for some reason that still made him feel gutted.

Class Affinity
For most members of Petra’s bloodline a higher education wasn’t just a privilege; it was expected. Ever since her father had been accepted into the Academy as a lad, life had changed for them in ways that only came ‘naturally’. In Petra’s youth she had tried, and failed, to get into the Academy under her father’s tutelage. Instead of wallowing in self doubt she had pressed forward to become a teacher at a well renowned facility in Valmon, second only to the Academy itself. When she’d married a Geian her family had their reservations, but had, for the most part, remained supportive. After all, so long as the children followed their set path then things should be fine.
That is, until Aurick was born.
As the first born and a pureblooded Lightning to boot he was expected to adhere to the family doctrine. His educators were among some of the best in the capital and yet with each passing year Aurick fell further and further behind. In his early years his grandfather simply thought he was being treated to ‘soft’ by his mothers. How was the boy supposed to learn anything if they didn’t press him? Mya was against such treatment, of course; if he wasn’t interested then he simply wasn’t interested and they were pushing him! She’d been around enough children to know that some learned better from books and some did better with their hands; in her eyes the boy was the latter. In the kitchen his entire attention was on the craft, and as far as she was concerned his talents were far ahead of others his own age. Of course, his grandfather, Bartek, never saw it that way. In his eyes Aurick was wasting years of specialized training that he’d instilled in Petra in the hope that their legacy would continue.
Petra, for the most part, shunned her father’s expectations. While she did push Aurick to continue his studies anytime he wanted to quit it was out of a motherly love to see her son have at least the basics down. She was happy enough to see him spending more time with Mya in the kitchen; they made for a sweet pair. The less Bartek spent with the growing family the happier they all seemed to be and by the time Aurick was old enough to fully voice that he’d like to become a baker just like his mother there were no objections.
It wasn’t until two years later, when the boy was on the cusp of his eighteenth birthday, that a letter was delivered to their home. Aurick opened it happily, only to realize it was from his grandfather. He’d apparently heard through a family friend that Aurick had no intention of continuing his education and was choosing a ‘simpler’ path in life. By the point in the letter that Bartek started to not only insult his intelligence, but that of his mothers and started to slander Mya’s bloodline Aurick stopped reading. What was the point? The old man was just angry and bitter; something that no amount of words was going to solve.
Aurick didn’t care. He didn’t need his grandfather's approval to be happy. Waking up and being able to do what he loved every day was enough. With his own hands he could make treats that would brighten up anyone’s day and that seemed more important to him than how many words he could write down on a sheet of paper. So, he’d be a Baker, just like the Geians his grandfather seemed to hold a grudge against, and do so with the biggest grin possible slathered all over his face.

Growth Solo
There had never been a doubt in Aurick’s mind that anything tumultuous would happen during Mya’s labor. He knew that one day soon his mother would have her latest baby, be weak for a while after, and that he’d likely be in charge of the youngest children while his mothers tended to the newborn for a while. It had happened that way so many times before that he never really gave it a second thought.
So when her labor started in the middle of the night Aurick knew exactly what he needed to do. He woke the younger children, herded them up with Astra and walked the two streets down, in the middle of a frigid night, to their Aunt’s house. Their arrival wasn’t as much of a shock this far into the pregnancy. No one wanted a house full of children to hear their mother screaming during labor and without scared little eyes looking at the midwife the poor woman might be able to get some work done. Usually the labor itself would last a few hours, Petra would come to get them with the biggest smile on her exhausted face, and that was it.
So when Aurick woke hours later, snugged up on the floor of his Aunt’s sitting room with his youngest sister tucked up against his chest, he worried. This...wasn’t right. Moving carefully so as not to wake her the teenager padded into the kitchen where his Aunt and Uncle were just starting the day. Both had the same concerned look about them, and when she saw Aurick his Aunt averted her gaze.
“She’s...Aurick, they had to call a healer. They’re in a rough way…”
She tried to stop him, but as soon as he heard the news Aurick was out the door. He hadn’t even grabbed his boots or his coat; what was the point if it was only going to slow him down?! In the middle of a busy morning the young lightning boy ran through the streets, only slowing as he neared his home. His heart was beating so loudly it might have been the only thing he heard if the absolute heart breaking wails of his mother weren’t so audible through the door.
He opened the door slowly, as if whatever inside would bite him as soon as he did. What he saw would scar him for years later.
His mother, Petra, was openly screaming into Mr. Fairworth’s chest.
A healer he’d never met was holding a stillborn babe.
And Mya….Mya was covered in a white shroud.
Aurick dropped to his knees.
A pair of hands found their way to his shoulders, but they weren’t his mother’s. When Aurick looked up he could barely see Verys; the world was so hazy and wet and was it only his mother screaming at that point? When the older man bent at the knee and wrapped his arms around Aurick he felt a vacuum building in his chest. Eventually he had to be nudged away from the doorway so that Mya could be taken away, and that in itself was gut wrenching. He couldn’t even see her under that shroud, but the familiar form was there just the same. Why? Why was this...He’d just seen her hours ago! This pregnancy had even gone easier than the rest! She was smiling when he’d left, had kissed him on the forehead just like she always did and told him to make sure the kids had each to eat in the morning. She was so sure it would all work out....
But life...just wasn’t like that. Later he would find out that the baby had been turned funny, and somewhere along the line of just trying to get it - her - out something had happened. The details may have been explained to him, but Aurick couldn’t remember. All he knew was when she’d been born his sister had already passed and his mother just couldn’t stop bleeding. The midwife had already sent Petra out for a healer, but even then there had been no guarantee.
Days later and the children were still staying with their Aunt. The Fairworths helped where they could, and Aurick stayed at the house with Petra. She was trying so hard to keep things together when he was around, but everytime he was out of the room she would cry. No amount of convincing her would allow the woman to show that kind of vulnerability around him; she’d only ever done it around Mya. It was the hardest thing he’d ever had to watch and with Astra doing her best with the kids he felt alone.
Life was guaranteed and he learned in that one event that each day was a miracle in itself. Something as simple as hugging a loved one should be cherished and never taken for granted. So, each day he did his best to make sure that Petra ate, even if it was something small, and made sure she would be fine when he went to work at the bakery. Like it or not they couldn’t stay closed forever; someone had to carry on his mothers legacy. After all, it was the only thing he had left of her, and at least there, in the early hours of the morning, he could cry as much as he wanted without letting anyone see.
[Up until this point in his life Aurick's operated under a 'life is great, let's just be happy' kind of philosophy but over the course of one night everything has changed. He's forced to admit that nothing in life is guaranteed to you and that every little act is precious. Instead of wallowing in it like his mother Petra he's trying his best to step up and do things that his late mother, Mya, would have wanted. It isn't much, but he's making the decision to carry on however he can.] [912]

Stage 2 - Solo 1
It was a humid summer evening when Mr. Tomas Fairworth stopped by. Aurick had closed up shop relatively early and found himself at home with his family in a state of uneasy melancholy. He couldn’t explain it really; this feeling that had taken over him. Ever since Mama’s death he just felt off and even though he pushed through it for the sake of his family something in Aurick had died along with her.
The Fairworth’s came over more often these days. Tomas was a help financially, even when Petra told him not to behind closed doors. When she thought all of her children were asleep she would have discussions with him and his husband, Verys, about the state of things. Even with Mya working long hours in the bakery finances had been tight. Most of Petra’s income went into their home and the academy fees associated with little affluent children leaving them strapped on the best of days. Mya had supplied the coin for everything else and thus, so had Aurick and Astra once they were old enough to work. Their mothers had never wanted to rely on their children, had adamantly refused it, but now that Mya was gone Petra didn’t have a choice.
Without help from her eldest two the family would be in dire straights.
She’d contemplated pulling the younger children from their schooling and looking for cheaper tutors. Aurick had put a stop to that thought almost as soon as it cropped up. Education for five children, Astra’s apprenticeship not included, would be just as expensive with tutors as it would be to keep them in school. Petra’s tenure earned them a discount and they wouldn’t be shown that same level of respect anywhere else. While they could reach out to Petra’s family the lightning branch of his bloodline had been less than thrilled about her life choices and would no doubt smear her name before even considering helping. The family had been through enough already without adding more emotional trauma to the mix.
“Hello, Aurick.” Mr. Fairworth took the hat from his head and offered the other man a pleasant smile. At their current angle some may have mistaken him for shorter than Aurick when it was a trick. Once he’d been invited into the home and there wasn’t a stoop to hide him Mr. Fairworth stood eye level with his progeny. He was still a fairer man, with less bulk than Aurick, but many of the same features. Those indigo eyes, usually as soft as a spring rain, held a near constant sadness in them now. He’d cared for Mya a great deal and her loss had affected his family as much as it had theirs.
“Mr. Fairworth.” Aurick took his hat and coat, motioning with an arm toward the sitting room as he went about hanging them up. “Mother’s just in there having some tea. She’s been better lately, but evenings can be rough.” When the children were upstairs studying or outside playing, when the house was quiet and alone, when they would normally have been flirting shamelessly in the kitchen preparing summer treats…It hit Petra the hardest. She tried to keep Aurick from seeing, but he’d been privy to more than one sideling looks into a nearly empty room as she wept.
“Actually, it wasn’t her I came to see. If you have a moment would it be alright if we had a chat? You and I?” For Tomas to travel from Valmon to see him specifically meant it had to be something truly important. Aurick nodded and walked toward the kitchen instead, pausing just a moment to look down the hall toward the sitting room, before leading them both inside. Tomas took a seat at the table and when Aurick moved to grab something to drink he shook his head, gesturing instead for the younger lightning man to sit across from him.
“What’s on your mind, Tomas?” It was the first time Aurick had ever used the man’s given name in front of him and it felt as weird on his tongue as it was for Tomas to hear. For a moment neither moved, too struck by the unusualness of the situation before the silence was broken.
“Ever to the point. You get that from Mya.” Tomas’ fingers fidgeted with the bottom him of his vest. For whatever reason the man was nervous and looked like he had been for quite some time. “I…take it that Petra hasn’t mentioned my letters?”
Aurick tossed an arm over the back of his chair and looked past him to a little basket that sat on a kitchen counter. It was nearly bursting with letters; none of which had been opened. “If it’s there then no, she hasn’t. She’s responded to missives from the academy and that’s all.” While neither she nor Mr. Fairworth worked at the Academy, the school they taught at was prestigious in its own right and she couldn’t afford to lose her position.
”Just a little longer now, Aurick. I just need some time to grieve; they understand that.”
And yet, how many months had it been already?
“I thought as much.” Tomas murmured with a sigh. “That’s why I wanted to talk to you. Frankly I’m worried about the amount of time she spends in this house and what it’s doing to her mind. Petra’s always been so sharp, but I’m sure I don’t need to tell you how that’s changed.”
No, no he didn’t. Aurick didn’t need help understanding the vacancy in his mother’s eyes after his mama had passed. She’d always been a stick thin woman with pointed features, but now Petra may as well have been a skeleton. A haunted waif who could barely bring herself out of bed most days let alone work.
“She needs a change, Aurick; you all do.” He reached across the table to take Aurick’s hand. “The house next door to us is vacant. It’s the same size as this one, but since it’s in Valmon there won’t be a yard, the neighbors are closer and rents a little higher-“
“You want us to move?”
“Just…just hear me out. She and the children would be closer to school, Verys and I will be next door if she needs help watching them, and…well, I can’t imagine sleeping in the same room my partner passed in.”
What he didn’t know was that she hadn’t slept in that room for months. If mother needed anything from the bedroom she made the briefest of treks, but generally kept it as empty as possible as a sort of shrine.
“Our family is here.” All of Mya’s kin that lived in the city was in Zenner. The rest resided on the farm, but everyone that had been there for the couple were here. Petra didn’t have anyone else since her own kin had disowned her. Family meant everything to them so the thought of leaving that behind was baffling. “I can’t see her just walking away from that.”
“Which is why you need to make her. Aurick, she’ll never leave if she thinks it’s abandoning Mya. Just because she’s in a new city doesn’t mean she loves her wife any less and the children will always have connections to their family. I just think Petra needs to break away before she breaks herself.” Taking a deep breath, he squeeze Aurick’s hand before letting go and sitting back in his chair. “I understand it would be harder for you to leave, but I can put in a good word-“
“I’ll never leave.” He said without hesitation. Aurick’s heterochromatic gaze sought out Tomas’ lavender one and the certainty there was daunting. “I can’t. The bakery was everything to her; it’s everything to me. I’ll be fine here on my own, and I’ll…talk to her about the move. If I send coin with you then can you secure it for them?”
It was a bold move, but Aurick was afraid if they didn’t act now then something would go wrong. Either he would beg her not to go, she would feel compelled to stay or someone else might snatch it up. He just…Spirits, his heart was breaking.
He didn’t want her to go, but he couldn’t bear the thought of losing another. And it wouldn’t just be her leaving. All five of his younger siblings would go with her. There would be no more bustling mornings before class; prepping breakfasts, making sure braids were in tact, tying shoes…Could he do it? And Astra…Would she go too or would she stay?
If she wants to go you have to let her.
He was fine; he was going to be fine. He just had to be.
“I’ll leave you to it then. I would go greet her, but it’s late.” Tomas stood and the pair were nearly silent as he prepped himself to leave. When he was once again on the stoop he looked back to Aurick. “They raised a fine son, Aurick. The hard decisions in life are never easy ones, but you take them in stride. It’s admirable.” He tipped his hat and started to walk.
