Aurick wasn’t unused to traveling for work, especially now that Mya had passed. Most of the heavy lifting for the bakery fell on his shoulders (literally, in some cases) and now that his mother was no longer around to manage the financial aspects of things that too fell to him. He didn’t mind it most days; a lot of the tasks were familiar enough to him that the young lightning hadn’t had trouble adjusting.
He’d made his way to the port in search of exotic spices and ingredients for pastries. While the family bakeries specialties were what brought customers back he wanted to try something new. Something that didn’t remind him so much of her…
Granted, in a port town, walking around with muscles as thick as his brought on it’s fair share of attention. Most assumed he worked for some ship or another so they kept trying to hoss work off onto Aurick and the poor b*****d was just too nice to say no. It was because of this that he’d ended up spending over half the morning loading a random ship when he was supposed to be shopping...

They were at one of the final ports before departing fully to Kahikina. The very thought filled Emiyn with excitement and the usually more reserved man found himself actually smiling more so than usual today. He wasn't even bothered when he turned the corner and rammed himself into a rather solid wall of....muscle? Blinking, the much more petite mage stared at the lightning before slowly taking a step backwards. "I'm sorry." He began before pausing once more and looking over the stranger. This man wasn't part of the crew, was he? Emiyn tilted his head before just blurting out his thoughts. "You're not on the crew, right? Is there a reason that you're loading things onto our ship?" The Matori was completely baffled before he caught sight of some of the crew walking rather quickly away from sight.
Oh don't tell me....

“Sorry about that! Are you okay?” Aurick couldn’t help the warm chuckle that slipped out. Two large sacks were hefted over his shoulder, and the man easily balanced another on his hip as he looked down at the smaller matorian. “It’s my fault; you’d think a guy as tall as me would be able to see more than I do.” He grinned, resisting the urge to roll his eyes at his own idiocy. What if he’d hurt someone? Aurick might have been spooked and dropped a bag on the poor guy! Sack? What was even in these things, anyway?
“Yeah, no, I’m a baker. I’m not even from this city, actually. I came to buy spices, but then someone thought I worked here and handed me a bag and-” Aurick shrugged.

"It's fine, really." Replied Emiyn with a flush as he studied the other man. Emiyn realized that he was smaller, almost too feminine for most to consider him a man, and he usually didn't mind since he was adverse to most physical work. However, seeing someone so large standing before him was definitely throwing him off. Did they even have someone this huge on their crew? But the startling thing was hearing that he was a baker! What type of dough needed so much kneading for all of those muscles? Emiyn's gaze snapped back towards the lightning's face before a faint chuckle left his lips. "You just took the bag and started working?" He questioned with amusement before shaking his head. "Either way I'm sure they were thankful for your help though it was supposed to be their responsibility." Emiyn called out, almost hoping the crew would hear him, before he thought a moment longer. If it was Ephrym...how would he handle this situation? Surely he wouldn't just let the guy go after doing so much work for them.
"If you put the bag down then maybe I could help you look for spices? It's only fair since you got roped into doing work for us." If anything maybe they even had the spices that the guy wanted considering their recent haul came from merchants that traded between Belrea and Oba. Ephrym had wanted to get some trading finished before they ventured into the unknown after all.

Aurick was barely popping a sweat. The thick cords of his arms stretched the leather of his vest to it’s absolute limit, but despite the near monstrous status of his muscles his smile was as soft as fresh bread. At first glance he’d assumed the matorian was male, but now that he was getting a better look maybe he was actually a she? Regardless they were definitely fair enough for it!
“It just seemed like they needed help.” After seeing the way the crew had been lugging sacks and crates into the ship's hull all morning Aurick hadn’t minded joining in. At the very least someone might have been able to take a break! Still, hearing the way the man - woman? - raised their voice made Aurick wince guiltily. “Aww, don’t ride ‘em too hard. It’s no problem at all; really.”
Aurick paused for a moment and thought over the offer. “...Only if you’re alright with it. I really could use the help.” He shifted away from the smaller matorian and with a mighty throw tossed sack after sack on top of a nearby crate. The abrupt shift in weight was enough to make the wood bounce. When he was done he stepped back and rolled his shoulder, working out a little kink that had settled with a broad grin. “Name’s Aurick, by the way. What can I call you?”

"Trust me." Emiyn shook his head. "They'll ride on your mercy all day so that they can hit the pubs harder tonight." The elementalist commented with a small grin before the acceptance of his offer made him stand up straighter. "A pleasure to meet you, Aurick. My name is Emiyn." While he didn't hold out his hand for a shake or anything like that Emiyn at least gave a nod of greeting, nothing too formal like bowing but acknowledgement nonetheless. Now that they had been introduced it was more of a question about what spices a baker would be looking for. Surely it had to be something fresh and exotic for him to leave the city and come all the way to a port town. The very thought made Emiyn pause thoughtfully. "You said you were looking for spices but anything in particular?"

Well, that may have been true, but it wasn’t as if Aurick would have stopped had he not been coaxed out of it. It just wasn’t in him to walk away even if others were taking advantage of his generosity.
“Not really?” Aurick rubbed the back of his neck with that same guilty smile on his face. “Alright, so that’s definitely a lie. See, I...uh...My mom died a few months ago and I worked in the family bakery. Great place, you know, you should stop by if you’re ever that far inland. Thing is all of our recipes are traditional and passed down which is great until you realize it’s recipes she taught me and it just...hurts.” Aurick took a moment to inhale and his smile dropped a little. “I’m just looking for something new; maybe something to surprise my siblings with.”

"Oh." Emiyn found himself blinking, his expression twisting with sorrow for the other man. "I see." If anything he recognized that feeling all too well when he thought of losing his grandmother who was basically more a mother to him than anyone else. Actually the thought of his grandmother had him thinking and the Matori twisted around so that he could study the pile of cargo that Aurick had helped to stack. Traditional recipes? Maybe he could help somehow? Either way Emiyn found himself glancing back towards Aurick with sympathy. "I'm very sorry for your loss. I know I can't say much to ease the pain but at least I can try to help with this matter." If anything he knew the feeling of working as a distraction against pain and healing like that would take time, if such scars could ever fully go away. "When you say baker is there anything that you specialize in? And have you heard of curry?" Already a thought was forming in his mind and Emiyn started to hope that the galley was both clean and clear of crew for now.

He hadn’t meant to bring the mood down, but, well...Aurick just wasn’t a smooth man. He was very honest with things and sometimes that made life fairly awkward.
“Cakes, mostly. I like making flowers out of frosting.” His sisters would absolutely glow everytime he twisted the confectionary sugar into different shapes and creatures. At one point he’d tried to make a smaller version for his mothers’ wedding anniversary and….well, it hadn’t looked good, but the taste was fair. “If it’s sweet I can make it.” That much he was sure of!
Curry, though…”Can’t say I’ve heard of it.”

"A cake master then." Emiyn mused. If only they could use one of those on the ship! He was very fond of sweets and it would be awfully tempting to visit Aurick's bakery one day, that is if he were as good as Emiyn hoped. "So how do you feel about more savory things? Curry kind be both sweet and spicy. That's why I enjoy it so much. There's even a family recipe to bake it within bread like a treat." As he spoke Emiyn started moving so that he could look through some of the bags. Surely Ephrym would be fine with him taking a couple of loose ends, especially if his plan worked out well and the lightning man wanted to purchase some spices. Eventually he found the correct bags and held them out towards Aurick. "That's some spices from Oba and Matori there. We have a kitchen if you'd like to try them out?"

“Bake it til you make it.” Aurick grinned, wagging his thick brows a little as his heterochromatic eyes crinkled. It was a little odd to fall back into puns after everything that had happened, but strange enough it felt good. Like he was rediscovering a part of himself that had left with her.
“Sweet and spicy, hmm? Guess I’d have to try it first, but if it’s as good as you say then I’m in.” Especially if it was a family recipe! Biased as he may be, the lightning baker knew that if it was good enough to be passed down then it was good enough to share with others! Taking the satchel, Aurick looked inside and took a heady whiff. A thousand possibilities lit up in his mind’s eye and he knew he had to give it a shot.
“Seriously? You wouldn’t mind?”

"Bake it until....wait, really?" Emiyn gave another chuckle before motioning for Aurick to follow him across the deck. "Well if you'd like to try selling some foreign ideas then I do truly hope that you enjoy it." Perhaps he was just a bit homesick but Emiyn was eager to play around with some recipes as he recalled them. Did he have parchment and ink? Of course he did. Emiyn smirked as he patted the small satchel bag swinging at his side. Perfect. He could write down what each of the spices were and the actual recipe if the other man enjoyed it. If only his grandmother had written down recipes rather than simply repeating them verbally over the years. Though admittedly it did help him now when he was going to try to make everything from memory.
"I don't mind at all. Unlike everyone else I prefer to enjoy my evenings sober so I have plenty of time to prepare for a voyage on my own." Emiyn started down the stairs before pausing to grin towards Aurick. "Plus, the captain owes me a favor or two already so use of the kitchen should be a fair request." The Matori quickly walked into the fairly decent sized galley and started to go through the shelves for ingredients and utensils. "I actually had the cook make some curry just this morning which should be perfect...add some starch to make it less soupy and all that's left is to make the bread to stuff it inside."

“That’s the yeast of my jokes.” Aurick chortled and followed along behind Emiyn. He really was having too much fun at his own ‘witty’ wordplay. He brushed his hands off on his pants, grimacing a little when he noticed just how dirty he actually was. Not terrible, but...well, he just hoped he didn’t come into contact with anything white!
“So you don’t drink, you don’t do the heavy lifting and you know how to cook. Is that your job on the ship? Chef?” Shrimpy little guy like this might know how to make a decent meal, but he clearly didn’t know how to eat it! If Aurick had his way he’d be eating at least two to three times more to put some meat around those ribs!
Looking around, Aurick put his hands on his hips and gave a low whistle. “First time in a galley. It’s somehow both smaller than I thought and bigger.” It didn’t make sense, really. In one moment he felt cramped, almost like the ceiling was pressing down on him and yet it was also bigger than the broom closet he’d been expecting.

Emiyn rolled his eyes at yet another pun from the other man. Is this what he had signed up for today? Perhaps staying with the crew had made him a bit too friendly in this case. "Careful with how often you do that else it'll grow stale." Even he had to swallow his own groan at the fact that he had actually made a pun too. Was this like some sort of contagious disease? Either way it wasn't the worst sort of thing to deal with he supposed. A bad pun or two here and there still made much better company than others he had interacted with before.
"Chef? Not me." Emiyn replied as he started setting everything out on the solid counter built into the middle of the room. "I'm the navigator. I handle all the maps and deal with any stray winds and the like." He twisted his hand as he spoke, a little wisp of magic swirling around his finger for a few seconds, before he continued on. "It comes in handy when you're traveling through deeper waters." Emiyn chuckled at the observation from the other man. "One thing you can learn about ships is that they'll all come in different shapes and sizes. We don't have the largest of crew and focus mostly on cargo but our galley is decently almost middle sized if not a bit bigger than necessary all things considering." Most ships would just do with enough space to make gruel, a thought that made Emiyn shudder.
"Let me grab the curry..." Emiyn dropped the final ingredients onto the counter before reaching into a small metal contraption that let out some cold air when he opened it. Dry ice did wonders when one went to sea, especially if it allowed them to keep fresh produce longer. Emiyn removed the cloth covering from the bowl and then gestured towards Aurick. "It's cold now but if you'd like to try go ahead." It was a sweet and spicy curry with peppers and spices from his own country which Emiyn dearly loved.

Aurick reached over to slap Emiyn’s back. “Atta boy! That’s the spirit! Couldn’t have done it batter myself.” At the very least it was someone new to annoy instead of his siblings. Although, they were just as bad at the whole thing too..
Stepping away from the smaller man, Aurick leaned back on the counter and bided his time until he was called on to help. His eyes lit up at the display of magic and his grin grew a little. “See now that? That’s handy.” A navigator who could coerce the winds? Hopefully his captain paid him well for those sorts of services.
It didn’t take long for Aurick to locate the cutlery and even less time for him to dip the spoon into the curry. He wasn’t prepared for the kick it left in his mouth, but he couldn’t exactly say it was bad. If anything it was different and different he liked! “This is really good.”
