Class Affinity Solo
In the Garden

Kylaelya smoothed his hands over the fine grained soil, he had put a lot of effort into developing it to silky, light perfection. It had the perfect crumble and just the right amount of organic matter. Which he had gathered and calculated down to the last grain of sand, with many adjustments, sometimes based on the plant itself that the compost was to go to. He used the best materials available to properly nourish his soil program. Fine river sand collected just before the brackish delta, clays from the forest, coconut husk, fine pebbles, personal copost from green meals. With new discoveries just around the corner.

He was crouched with his bare feet flat in the soil as he bent oer his knees, he smoothed the soil down, watching the wakes of dirt rise and expand at the edges of his hands. Passing over the soil again he smoothed the excell over. He took a deeo breath which smelled richly of sunshine on warm earth.

There was the barest hint of freshness which alluded to the possibility of rain in the late afternoon or evening. Excellent. Perfect weather for his plant starts. Though he would still water them well. He dragged his flat of plants over. He remembered planting these seeds a month earlier. The seedlings had risen from the soil, a few days later, struggling to sink a root with the promise of new life. Should he succeed.

They had thrust up stalks before unfurling the seed leaves out of the empty seed coat. At that point he had spent some time just watching them in their miniscule perfection. Following this, once they had produced a few more leaves, he had farried them into and out of the house for increased amounts of sunlight each day. In this way his young charges got used to the burn of sunshine and the adamant caress of the wind. The wind taught their seedlings to strengthen their stems. Today they were ready. He gave them one last stroke before they graduated into the ground.

He would officially devote his life to gardening, there was nothing else he would rather do with his time.

A great cold wind blew a raid across the land and storm after storm rolled in off of the roiling sea. Despite this though the winter of Matori was beginning to lose its grip, the evenings of crochet and a sweater by the fire watching waves and reading books were numbered. A craving that started deep inside his heart had resurfaced, rising to the call of the rising sun. Its power drawing out the urge to grow something and harvest the sun in a living partnership. Indeed, it felt like his own inner green witch magic was starting to creep out of its long held dormancy. The winter months were cozy, and he was more than glad of the rests they provided, but they could be very dull, especially for those that lived alone. He liked it sure, but he did get lonely for company once in a while. There wasn't all that much need to call on a plant expert during winter but during summer they all but knocked down his door with requests and errands and small but heavy coin purses and offered to take some of his more spectacular specimens. So this was as it should be, but sometimes he longed for company in the wintertime. Moving on spring was fast approaching and part of his time was devoted to examining the hoard of seeds that he had gathered over time. There were so many varieties, so many options each garden like a yearly fingerprint, a glimpse in time. He also had quite a few rituals and small ceremonies to honor the spirits. All of which needed the special spring water that came in fresh from the hills and mountains. It was then collected in a large special round wood bowl with a naturally formed spout where the wood of the ancient tree had twisted in life. It was tilted to flow over so the water in the basin was constantly being replaced. It was clear of any contaminants and sourced in a sacred place. This along with fire and prayer played a part in all of the motions he performed to help ensure a good year and life for all the plants under his charge. And there were a lot of them indeed some were perennial but others would only last the one garden season before releasing seed and trying again with the next generation of plants. He greatly enjoyed every moment of his gardening practice from the scent of the soil to the green seedlings, to the buds and blooms, to fruit and seed. What he disliked was the doldrums during the stormy season. But the truth was that most plants didn't survive it anyway. Too wet too windy to savage he understood he got to hide inside when the storms came after all. He sorted in stacked and pre ordered his seeds until he had an idea of what he wanted to start in the spring. In the meantime, he gathered the supplies of what he needed for soil, pots or seed trays depending on what was to be planted. The best part about his situation was that he was not limited by space. It was more limited by time and what was maintainable through the growing season for a single prentice to manage. His friends did help out where they could but they had lives too. He was very fortunate to have them available when they were.

Soon enough it was time to plant the seeds. So the final lineup had been chosen about a month before. Seeds he didn't have started to arrive by courrier, life was awesome and good and magical. He got to bury seeds of all shapes and sizes into damp little soil beds and tucked in those that needed it. He had spent all winter studying plant related things for this next year's gardening journey right or wrong he would find out soon enough. The garden usually went one way or the other; devastating failure and devastating success. But always with the chance of hope and either one of which meant the whole plant died before flowering or fruiting, and one of which meant that it did too well and you ended up hiding zucchini under doormats, which come summer was such a thing that he didn't bother planting that one. There were usually a ton around. He got to grow more fun things because of it too. That was the beauty of living within a network of local growers. You could always trade which kinds of fun, which was kind of fun compared to coin. He would at the very least never go hungry in summer. A few days after planting the first seeds, signs of life began to appear in the peat pellets. Little leaves coming up with cute presentation. He loved them all, the ones he would keep he named right from germination. He would have a long hopefully fruitful relationship with these plants. He was very excited indeed. This was the beginning of a triple season journey. spring to fall. He was determined to live it fully this year and not get sidetracked from his overreaching goals. He would be successful. There was no alternative. He watched some seedlings started out quite slowly while others trundled right along. Giants in their own right exactly from the start. The squash were like that large seeds bringing forth large mountains. He loves squash they took quite a bit of room but they were sturdy plants given the right conditions unlike some of the teeny delicate flowers that he grew. This was so much fun. He often wondered why absolutely every one didn't garden. Sure it was hard work but so rewarding and you got way more out of it than you ever had to put in as long as the TLC was quite consistent. Soon enough his young plants were slowly getting accustomed to being outside sort of a graduation from kindergarten as it were less protection separated the hardy plants from the picky ones. What really hurt him was a thinning he had learned to keep some plants on a reserve so that if anything happened he still had a chance at growing that variety and next year or sometimes even the next season. Eventually he sold off the extras made it a bit of his coin back. It was well worth it. In the fall when he was inundated with fruit and veggies to spare he ate better than most people in town by virtue of the work he put into his garden. Soon enough, the garden was performing the ancient dance for flowers and bees called pollination. It was win win for all involved he had bees too. He took his garden seriously. You'd be well rewarded later. Best of all the plants would take and then would have lots of seeds to hoard and trade with later this was also very fun. He could not express that enough. Sure enough during the growing growing season, he was probably in the garden during his free time when he had an excuse because his garden was also his job. However he did man the stall once in a while, it was a most rewarding lifestyle and a job he was happy to do but one of these days it might be nice to find someone to share it with.
