Bronze Argamath

Origin of Name: Tribal people in what today is Turkmenistan first used the Akhal-Teke for raiding. The horses were their most treasured possession since they were crucial for income and survival. They selectively bred their horses, keeping records of the pedigrees via an oral tradition. Horses were managed and trained in very specific ways. Stallions were tethered next to the tent while mares and foals were free to seek forage. The stallions were covered from head to tail with up to seven layers of felt, which kept their coat short and shiny. Before raids they were put on a sparse diet to prepare them for the long ride through the desert with no water and hardly any feed. The horses were called Argamaks (divine or Sacred Horses) by the Russians, and were cherished by those who valued their speed and stamina in the desert and loyalty to their owner. Han emperors from China sacrificed armies to obtain just a few of the precious "Argamaks".

Argamath is derived from the Russian name "Argamaks".

Inspiration: Akhal-Teke
.
The Akhal-Teke is a Turkmen horse breed. They have a reputation for speed and endurance, intelligence, and a distinctive metallic sheen. The shiny coat of the breed led to their nickname, "Golden Horses". These horses are adapted to severe climatic conditions and are thought to be one of the oldest existing horse breeds.

There are several theories regarding the original ancestry of the Akhal-Teke, some dating back thousands of years. It is probable that Akhal Teke is a descendant of an older breed known as the Turkoman horse, and some claim it is the same breed. The tribes of Turkmenistan selectively bred the horses, recording their pedigrees orally and using them for raiding. The breed was used in the losing fight against the Russian Empire, and was subsumed into the Empire along with its country. The Turkoman has influenced many other breeds, including modern warmbloods, and recent research confirms that Turkoman stallions made significant contributions to the development of the Thoroughbred. However, there also exists the possibility that all Akhal-Tekes today have a Thoroughbred sire line.

The breed is tough and resilient, having adapted to the harshness of Turkmenistan lands, where horses must live without much food or water. This has also made the horses good for sport. The breed is known for its endurance, as shown in 1935 when a group of Turkmen riders rode the 2500 miles from Ashgabat to Moscow in 84 days, including a three-day crossing of 235 miles of desert without water. The Akhal-Teke is also known for its form and grace as a show jumper.

In 1881, Turkmenistan became part of the Russian Empire. The tribes fought with the tsar, eventually losing. In the process, however, the Russian general Kuropatkin developed a fondness for horses he had seen while fighting the tribesmen, founded a breeding farm after the war and renamed the horses, "Akhal-Tekes", after the Teke Turkmen tribe that lived around the Akhal oasis (near Geok Tepe).

Personality: Argamath is a beautiful bronze, and this dragon hatched knowing it. Though many bronze dragons have a healthy-dose of self-confidence, Argamath was blessed it in spades and is nothing but a vain beast. He is obsessed with his good looks, and won't make a move that doesn't show off his best-angle. Even from a young age, this bronze will ensure his rider is assisting him in keeping up his appearance; he shall have plenty of baths, will be required to use only the best oil, and both will be done thoroughly. So what if the weyrlingmaster is calling? His oiling shall not be rushed! If someone is talking about beauty, you can bet Argamath will assume they are speaking of him, and Faranth forbid any of his clutchmates claim someone else is better looking! If appearances are everything than Argamath believes he's already won.

Unsurprisingly, his vanity also comes with a heavy dose of haughtiness. It isn't just that he's a good looking dragon, but he believes himself superior in practically every way. Perhaps it's because he's a bronze dragon in High Reaches Weyr, or the proud blood that runs through him, but this dragon can't help but lord over his clutchmates, especially the chromatics. He honestly believes himself just superior to them, even if they share his blood. Browns will be more accepted, though he would never consider them the brains of any outfit; blues are hardly with his notice, and greens and whites--well, let's just say he thinks so little of them they hardly register at all. Faranth forbid Argamath ever actually get any true form of power, for he would be utterly incorrigible.

This bronze will never find it easy making friends. There are few personalities that can tolerate Argamath, and even fewer still that he feels are worth his time. He will be easiest to befriend as a weyrling, but upon graduation, and as he ages, the more set-in-his ways he'll be known to be! Honestly, Argamath runs the risk of isolating himself. Warmth isn't his strong suit, and his vanity and haughty nature tend to keep him apart. There will always be exceptions, but friendliness isn't something he'll ever be known for. Instead of friends, Argamath doesn't mind admirers, and will treat them as a celebrity might his fans. A few smiles here, but otherwise, has little use for them.

Despite his short-comings, Argamath isn't entirely without merit. Let it be known he is a loyal dragon. He will forever be loyal to High Reaches Weyr, and shall always respect the chain of command (even if he might think himself better than some of the browns or fellow bronzes). He knows how to fall in line concerning the natural order, even if his pride must suffer. He will always defer to his rider, and to the small handful of clutchmates and possible future lovers that he lets in, you can bet he will be a constant source of support. While he might turn away others, to those he truly loves, he will give them the moons if they asked it.

This bronze is also a highly intelligent creature. He is quick to learn, and as a weyrling will absorb their lessons like a sponge. If his rider isn't particularly attentive, you can bet Argamath will be, and he'll have no trouble relaying what he's learned to his clutchmates. He might look down his snout at many of them, but he does believe knowledge is meant to be shared. Additionally, he's the sort of bronze who feels he's always right and likely struggles to accept that he's in any way wrong.

Though he might be small and self-absorbed, Argamath is hardy creature. He has a resilient spirit, and will not shy away from his duty of fighting Thread. When the going gets tough, that's when Argamath truly shines. When they're low on resources, when the Wing is low with morale, you can bet this bronze keeps his head up and his eyes sharp. He might not be the world's most sympathetic creature, but he has no trouble shouldering more than his lot when the Weyr needs it. When others suffer or struggle, this is when Argamath truly sets himself apart..

It's not just physical resilience, but emotional burdens, too. His rider will always have him as a rock to lift him up when he's not well, or to lean upon when he grows weary. Those who do manage to worm their way into his hearts will find a bronze who is there to help them through the rough times, too, with a quiet and surprising tenderness. He's not always all edges, and when his hearts are at their best, he will be a pillar of support. When everyone else is falling apart, Argamath will keep his head, and help carry his wing through.

Positive Traits: Intelligent, Loyal, Resilient
Negative Traits: Vain, Haughty, Isolated

Lump of Coal Egg: A small egg with a slightly leathery feel to the shell.

Adult Size: 40'
Physical Attributes: Argamath is a bronze who is not particularly large, but he is quite tall. He has a long, chiseled face with a high brow, and long headknobs. He tends to be thin with delicate bones and a long, graceful tail. This is a bronze who will be quite lean compared to some of his stockier and mores muscled brothers, but rest assured, he is just as strong and equally as capable.

Additional Notes: Argamath will be known for his speed and endurance. Where he isn't nearly as strong as some of his clutchmates, this bronze ehas stamina in droves. He can and will push himself to his limits, for better and for worse.

He'll heave a particularly long flame, though it's spread is rather thin. H

Though Argamath might be a bit isolated, he isn't impossible to get to know, and he will have a few closer bonds within the clutch, and once he grows. If his rider wishes him to be more sociable, he will be easier to impress upon during his time as a weyrling than as an adult, though even that isn't impossible.

When it comes to flights, Argamath will be picky about who he chases. Perhaps he might wish to be caught instead? Only time will tell!

Impression Effect: Kaiator will find himself much more easily-able to open up to others genuinely so. Perhaps it's because he no longer needs to use others for gain, as he has obtained the ultimate prize in Argamath; or perhaps it's simply because Argamath will break down every wall the man has upon Impression--and would never stand for anyone wounding his! EKaiator will find that he can accept the companionship of his fellow weyrlings and wingmates without nearly as much suspicion or mistrust. He'll be a more approachable, confident man, and some of his softer sides will be more easily given light.

Why Me? Argamath found a kindred spirit in Kaiator, and is certain that Kaiator will feel the same. This bronze demanded someone who knew their worth and was ambitious enough to know they deserved to be taken right to the top. He's certain Kaiator will see him for the glorious beast that he is, and on that same token, ensure that the man is reminded everyday how lucky they are to have one another. Where Kaiator seeks security and comfort, Argamath is just the dragon to ensure he gets it. Why, by being a bronze he's already set their future on a fine path, especially while at High Reaches!

Like rider like dragon, Argamath understands Kaiator's self-isolation. Argamath is a dragon who doesn't need much, but he will always need Kaiator. That said, the man's more naturally sociable nature will help get Argamath out there, and with time, might even rub off on him. He might not be everyone's favorite dragon, but there is hope Kaiator will get the bronze to open up to others, or at least be physically present. Additionally, he's one of the few beings (outside of a Queen or ranking dragon) who can power Argamath down when he's at his worst. For Kaiator, this bronze (usually) relents. His strong-willed nature will be needed to ensure Argamath doesn't do something foolish or get them (or someone else) in serious trouble. This is a bronze who needs boundaries, and there's hope Kaiator will keep him from being a complete beast and may even learn some manners instead. Instead, he might be able to help keep Argamath focused on their goals and even become a better bronze.

Never again will Kaiator need worry about enemies or those he's crossed, for he will find a champion in this bronze, and behind him, the security of High Raeaches Weyr. On the flipside, Argamath will never make friends easy due to his nature, and will all-the-more-cherish Kaiator's companionship. There is no one he loves and respects and adores more than Kaiator--and he will share that love freely. Kaiator alone will see the softer sides of the bronze (and rest assured, despite his outside appearance, this bronze has hearts that cut, and feel the full range of emotions). He is a work-in-progress, and Kaiator is just the complicated man he needs. He will give him the moons if he wishes it--and will always remind Kaiator of their worth.

Even if they have no others, they will always have one another--just as it should be.

Kaiator (Zaikt)

Bronze Destrierth

Origin of Name: Destrierth, from destrier, which takes its origin from the Middle English destrer and old French destrier. The origin of the word is ultimately from the Vulgar Latin equus dextarius, meaning "right-sided horse." The Destrier were the Great Horses of old, fit to carry knights at tourneys and in war. The noble Percheron are the descendants of examples of this type - although the destrier were not a particular breed, certainly the modern day Percheron would closely resemble them. In fact, according to one theory, the Percheron once were smaller in stature, closer to that of the destrier. Destriers were selected from among the strongest and most fierce of the horses trained up to become mighty war horses. Usually stallions, they were readied from foalhood to become legendary beasts known for their ferocity in battle and intelligence.

Inspiration: Percheron

The Percheron breed originated in the Huisne river valley in France, which arises in Orne, part of the former Perche province, from which the breed gets its name. Several theories have been put forth as to the ancestry of the breed, though its exact origins are unknown. One source of foundation bloodstock may have been mares captured by Clovis I from the Bretons some time after 496 AD, and another may have been Arabian stallions brought to the area by Muslim invaders in the 8th century. Other possibilities are captured Moorish cavalry horses from the Battle of Poitiers in 732 AD, some of which were taken by warriors from Perche. A final theory posits that the Percheron and the Boulonnais breed are closely related, and that the Boulonnais influenced the Percheron when they were brought to Brittany as reinforcements for the legions of Caesar. It is known that during the 8th century, Arabian stallions were crossed with mares native to the area, and more Oriental horse blood was introduced by the Comte du Perche upon his return from the Crusades and expeditions into territory claimed by Spain. Blood from Spanish breeds was added when Rotrou III imported horses from Castile. No matter the theory of origin, breed historians agree that the terrain and climate of the Perche area had the greatest influence on the development of the breed. A possible reference to the horse is made in the 13th-century romance Guillaume de Dole, in which the title character asks for "the Count of Perche's horse" to be made ready, possibly indicating the "'great horse,' which could accommodate an armored knight" and was bred in the geographical setting of the poem.

During the 17th century, horses from Perche, the ancestors of the current Percheron, were smaller, standing between 15 and 16 hands (60 and 64 inches, 152 and 163 cm) high, and more agile. These horses were almost uniformly gray; paintings and drawings from the Middle Ages generally show French knights on mounts of this color. After the days of the armored knight, the emphasis in horse breeding was shifted so as to develop horses better able to pull heavy stage coaches at a fast trot. Gray horses were preferred because their light coloring was more visible at night. This new type of horse was called the "Diligence Horse", because the stage coaches they pulled were named "diligences". After the stage coach was replaced by rail, the modern Percheron type arose as a slightly heavier horse for use in agriculture and heavy hauling work moving goods from docks to railway terminals.

Arabian stallions were made available to Percheron breeders for use in breeding army mounts, beginning in 1760 at the royal stud at Le Pin. Between 1789 and the early 1800s, the Percheron was in danger of becoming extinct as horse breeding was suppressed during the French Revolution and its aftermath. Early histories of the breed point to two gray Arabian stallions from Le Pin, Godolphin and Gallipoly, as the blood that helped to restart Percheron breeding. However, later research found that Godolphin was a chestnut Arabian of ordinary conformation and no special worth, while Gallipoly was a gray saddle horse of unknown breeding. Modern breed historians contest that there was enough breeding stock left after the early 19th century to restart the breed without further Arabian influence, and state that it is unlikely that two horses of unremarkable breeding and conformation had a significant influence on the breed. Jean le Blanc, a founding stallion of the Percheron breed, was foaled in 1823. Today, all Percherons trace their ancestry to this stallion. At this time the breed also became larger, with horses from other French districts being imported to Perche to change the Percheron from a coach horse averaging 1,200–1,400 pounds (540–640 kg) to a draft horse averaging 2,000 pounds (910 kg). In 1893, the first Percheron stud book was created in France. By 1910, French registrations had risen to almost 32,000 horses. Between 1880 and 1920, Percheron breeders in France exported horses all over the world, including South Africa, South America, Australia and North America.

Personality: A solid, reliable bronze. If there is ever any dragon who can be counted on to do his part, it is Destrieth. To say that he is loyal and hardworking is a given, and also an understatement. One might as well say his name, for it would mean the same thing. Noble to a fault, this bronze can be trusted with any task, or any secret, for he will do everything possible to avoid failing others when they are in need. However, this does have its drawbacks. Such a burden can be very heavy even on his broad shoulders, and it can cause Destrieth to be very selective with whom he entrusts his own woes and cares. For indeed, what if his needs are overwhelming to the other? He could not bear it. He is a truly good hearted dragon, and would dash himself to pieces in the attempt to do right, even if it is against his own best interests.

In his hearts, he is a dreamer, fondly imagining a time quite different from his own, when perhaps he might have been one of few bronzes. All the better to take care of the Weyr and those within it! He is keenly aware of how rare his own color once was, and feels the immense pressure to live up to the storied days of old. Nobility will not serve anyone if it is not put to use. The tremendous pressure that Destrieth places upon himself can at times be unbearable, and would certainly be stressful to the wrong rider. It is not so much that he has ambitions as he just simply needs to be needed, and to put his rank to better use.

He certainly possesses his mother's sense of noblesse oblige, and will do what he can for those less fortunate than himself. It is after all, his right and his privilege - nay, his duty! - to look after the weak and the world weary. Those who are not, perhaps, so strong as he himself. For he is strong, no matter how tender his hearts might be. Destrieth can take a hit and then some, emotionally as well as physically. He loves nothing more than to please others, and to give them a good example to live by.

All that said, he can be a very... foolhardy creature. His bravery can backfire monumentally. If he is asked to push himself beyond his limits, he will. It will be up to his rider to enforce those limits, for he will not. Rather, he will dash against the rock of duty until it inevitably defeats him. Then, once defeat, he will languish in shame and self-loathing. For how could he allow himself to be limited in such a fashion? Is he not a bronze? It is expected of him to succeed, and in failing he will wallow in fits of self-pity and disgust by turns. It is wise to distract Destrieth from this course with reminders of all of the good he has yet to do in the world... even if that is a very pretentious notion.

Positive Traits: Dutiful, trustworthy, noble
Negative Traits: Bullheaded, sulking, arrogant

Christmas Tree Egg: A large egg.

Adult Size: 46'
Physical Attributes: An immense beast in stature, with a gentle, handsome face. He is tall for a dragon, with a broad wingspan and a well muscled body.

Additional Notes: As a bronze of High Reaches, Destrieth sees it as his duty to chase any Queen who might Rise. Although he may feel his hearts pulled more toward other males, or even the rare green, he will continue to join Queen Flights until he finds his hearts stolen. In such a case, once devoted he will remain so for the duration. For indeed, there is a romantic lurking within this bronze. In Threadfall he will have great strength and stamina, if an average flame length.

Impression Effect: Upon Impression, Tarroi will gain a tremendous boost to his confidence. He has always been a handsome boy, but now he will carry it with the same sort of swagger that Mnementh's F'lar once had. For he is the rider of the Percheron, who holds himself King of his clutch, and has many subjects to tend to. +10 to charisma.

Why Me? In Tarroi, Destrieth saw another who needed his guidance and protection. Although Tarroi seeks to be the font of wisdom, he is in clear need of support and aid. The confidence that he once had in himself certainly spoke to Destrieth, who could not have Impressed to someone not up to the task of being his rider. But Tarroi's weakness also drew him, for he wants nothing more than to be needed, and he can and will fulfill the young man's desires, hopes, and dreams. Perhaps he will not be Weyrleader, although that remains to be seen, but he will forever more be a Bronzerider of High Reaches, and is there anything finer?

Bronze Khazariath
Written by Mr Cheri
Colored by Mr Cheri

User Image

Origin of Name: Khazariath, from the Khazar Horse, another name for the Caspian Horse. Khazaria was a great trading empire, and the Khazars, a semi-nomadic Turkic people, were known for their relationship with Byzantium. Masters of the western range of the Silk Road, the Khazars were ultimately betrayed by Byzantium and destroyed by the Kievan Rus in medieval times.

Inspiration: Caspian

The Caspian is a small horse breed native to Northern Iran. Although its original height probably ranged between 9 and 11.2 hands (36 and 46 inches, 91 and 117 cm) it is termed a horse rather than a pony because, size apart, it has much in common with horses in terms of conformation, gaits and character. It is believed to be one of the oldest horse or pony breeds in the world, descended from small Mesopotamian equines that, in competition with larger animals, had faded from attention by the 7th century AD.

The horse breed was brought to public notice again when rediscovered in 1965 by Louise Firouz, an American-born breeder of Iranian horses living in Iran. In 2011, the remains of a horse dating back to 3400 B.C.E. were found at Gohar Tappeh, Iran, giving rise to claims that the Caspian is the oldest known breed of domestic horse that still exists. It is also called Khazar Horse, after one of Caspian sea's native names in Iran.

A partial answer to the existence of the Caspian is the fact that the Persian Empire, which flourished in the first millennium B.C, has been called "the first great road empire". Before the Romans built their first road for marching men, the Persians constructed broad straight dirt roads, well maintained for speedy couriers and busy senior administrators. Herodotus wrote that:

"There is nothing in the world which travels faster than these Persian couriers. It is said that men and horses are stationed along the road…a man and a horse for each day. Nothing stops these couriers from covering their allotted stage in the quickest possible time, neither snow, rain, heat nor darkness."

The origin of the Caspian is said to be the mountainous regions of northern Iran, which explains how the breed is tough, athletic, and nimble. Indeed, the oldest known specimen of the Caspian horse was found in 2011, in a cemetery dating back to 3400 B.C.E., in the archaeological dig at Gohar Tappeh in the province of Mazandaran in northern Iran, between the cities of Neka and Behshahr. They were depicted in ancient art, where they appeared in scenes pulling chariots. The horse was identified by its "form, figure, and size" as having a light frame, thin bones, short, fine head with a pronounced forehead, large eyes, short ears, and small muzzle. The Caspians were first mentioned in recorded sources sometime in 600 CE.

The Persian Empire required land transport on a huge scale. They were the first people to breed horses especially for strength and speed. That these horses were very small by modern standards is shown by a miniature golden chariot, a toy or perhaps a votive offering, found in the so-called Oxus Treasure, discovered in the extreme east of the empire but apparently made in central Persia. The vehicle was obviously built for speed. Its wheels are higher than the horses, which are themselves of lesser height than the two passengers - and not because of the status of the passengers. Neil MacGregor likens this vehicle to a Ferrari or Porsche amongst cars – fast and luxurious. King Darius (the Great) trusted his life to the little horses during lion hunts, and honoured them on his famous Trilingual Seal.

As seen on the bas reliefs on the great staircase at Persepolis the Persian Shah demanded tributes of only first class animals. Those depicted were probably from Lydia in Turkey, judging by the grooms' appearance, and the horses are of similar size to the four in the Oxus Treasure. Skeletons with the same bone structure as the Caspian were found at Hamadan.

Yet the fine little horses so valued by the Persian Empire virtually disappeared from history after libraries and monuments were destroyed in the great Mongol and Islamic conquests. Almost no further mention was found of them after 700 AD and until 1965, modern scholars believed that they had become extinct.

It is now assumed that the modern Caspian descended from the great pool of quality stock that once formed the essential foundation of the Persian Empire. Caspians, known locally as moulek or pouseki ponies ( "little muzzle" ), now inhabit an area in the north of Iran between the Caspian Sea and the Elburz Mountains. Horses potentially related to the Caspian have also been identified in a much wider range, as history might lead us to expect.

At first thought to be a pony, the Caspian Horse was re-discovered in 1965 in this mountainous region of northern Iran by the American-born breeder of Iranian horses, Louise Firouz, while searching for small ponies to be ridden by children. She saw a small bay stallion in the town of Amol pulling a clumsy cart, but with the body of a "well-bred oriental horse." She purchased the stallion, naming him Ostad (and later nicknaming him 'The Professor' due to his 'wise' nature). Following her discovery, Firouz concluded:

" ….. there was an elusive beauty and grace about this small horse which did not seem to fit into the accepted picture of ponies. Ponies are chunky, strong little equids generally developed under austere conditions of climate and food. Why a "pony" on the relatively lush shores of the temperate Caspian: and, in spite of his small size, was the light, graceful animal on the Caspian a pony at all? Was there any historical precedent for a pony-sized horse in Iran and, if so, how well documented was it? These questions initiated a study in the spring of 1965 to determine the range, nature and historical precedent for a horse of this size in Iran."

With seven mares and six stallions, Firouz began a breeding program at her riding school in Norouzabad, with the horses she named "Caspian" from the area where she had found them. The horses themselves were much enjoyed by the children; Ostad became a successful sire of children's ponies and was ridden daily in the company of mares. Firouz started the Iranian stud book in 1966. In 1973 the stud was sold to the Shah of Iran, who established the Royal Horse Society at the Norouzabad Stud.

In late 1965, while visiting her family in Great Falls, Virginia, Firouz told Kathleen McCormick the Caspian story and showed photographs of the ponies she had brought to Norouzabad. They decided to export a Caspian stallion from Iran to the United States and McCormick selected the foundation stallion Jehan from the photographs. In April 1966, William M. Santoro, DVM, accompanied Jehan on the four-day, 8,000-mile journey to New York. Due to the difficulties experienced in exporting Jehan from Iran, only a part-bred breeding program was established in the US at that time and plans to import mares were put on hold. In 1975 a further stallion was exported to Venezuela from Iran.

Meanwhile, a new herd of twenty mares and three stallions established on the Turkoman Steppes by Firouz, suffered repeated and fatal wolf attacks. This forced the emergency evacuation of six mares and a stallion to the Caspian Stud UK in 1976 and the remainder were taken over by the Royal Horse Society of Iran. They were later widely dispersed during the Iranian Revolution, leaving only one traceable stallion. The subsequent ban on keeping horses ended the breeding program in Iran until 1986, when Firouz found and purchased three mares and a stallion.

Personality: There are depths to Khazariath that are surprising, even for a bronze of his breeding. He possesses a wisdom and erudition beyond his Turns - indeed, there are few enough of those. Always conscious of the company that he finds himself in, Khazariath balances between caution and clear paranoia. Erring on the side of caution, he nevertheless is good at reading others. Particularly good, in fact. One might say that he is always on his guard, and that might be true, but it is because this wise young bronze is afraid of getting his hearts bruised. Indeed, they were be easy to destroy, if he were to allow another close to them.

He feels a certain duty to his family and Weyr to keep them safe. It is for the good of all, indeed, that he is so careful. While many around him might throw themselves into danger, Khazariath will assess the risk first, determining whether it is beyond his capacity to handle. Of course, it is entirely possible and even likely that he therefore puts limits on what he actually can deal with. When he feels particularly close to another, he will tend to lean on them a little, seeking reassurance from a source that is not his wary soul. There are times when he can be far too cautious, stemming from not only his intelligence, but also from a certain lack of confidence.

Hatched small, and small to this day, Khazariath is keenly aware of his own mortality. He is also aware that he would be easily replaced, were it to come to it. And Khazariath does not want to find himself dispensable. To that end he will do everything in his power that he can to make himself useful, and have a tendency to cling to his rider and to any who might worm their way into his sheltered hearts. He longs for nothing short of pure devotion from another, and though he knows that it is unlikely that he will receive it, he will quietly coil himself around whomever that cherished object might be, attempting to possess them utterly.

Positive Traits: Alert, perceptive, wise
Negative Traits: Paranoid, avaricious, clingy

Santa Egg: A small sized egg.

Adult Size: 35'
Physical Attributes: A dainty, delicate creature with a diminutive yet elegant muzzle, Khazariath stands no taller than a medium sized brown in the shoulder. His movements are expressive and elegant, each one selected with care. This bronze was clearly built for speed above stamina or strength.

Additional Notes: Although he would hardly admit to such a thing, Khazariath would prefer a male in a long term partner. He will chase Queens because it is expected of him, and because he would like to be a father, but would like a fellow bronze, brown, or blue to take home to his ledge. It would not occur to him to chase a green, as he sees nothing for him to gain in the exchange. And, too, it would be unfair to the lady - he is, after all, not interested. Best to leave that activity to another who would truly enjoy it. Due to his avaricious nature, he would prefer a shiny hide to match his own, but only if the bronze in question truly appreciated his company.

Impression Effect: There is just something about Dorok, post-Impress. A kind of je ne sais quois. One could never again call him average, and would be forgiven for wanting to draw closer to the newly minted bronzerider. Dorok will find it easier to forget his father's behavior, as his new life is so much more than anything the man might have said or done to him. He will also find his intelligence enhanced by Khazariath's own - as though his pool of knowledge and resources just got a little deeper.

Why Me? Although there were many on the Sands when it came time to make his choice, Khazariath knew that there was only one Dorok. And Dorok, of all of those seeking a bronze dragon, at least understood the overwhelming pressure that is placed on one who is expected to accomplish great things. It is in Dorok that Khazariath finds safety, for he knows that the young man dreams of one day being a hero. If they are to succeed, they must do so together. Frankly, Khazariath could not abide a rider who did not have the Weyr's best interests at heart. Dorok's tactical abilities will be aided by Khazariath's wisdom and Khazariath's caution might well be overcome by Dorok's nose for danger.

Origin of Name: Clydesdaleis an archaic name for Lanarkshire, a county in Scotland. It's pronounced "Dail Chluaidh" in Scottish Gaelic. From 1975 to 1996 it was also the name given to one of the nineteen districts of the Strathclyde region. The district was formed by the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 and was roughly conterminous to Lanarkshire. In 1996 it was abolished by the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994 and replaced by the council areas of South and North Lanarkshire.

Chluaith's name is derived from that Scottish Gaelic pronunciation.

Inspiration: Clydesdale

The Clydesdale is a breed of draft horse named for and derived from the farm horses of Clydesdale, a county in Scotland. Although originally one of the smaller breeds of draught horses, it is now a tall breed. Often bay in color, they show significant white markings due to the presence of sabino genetics. The breed was originally used for agriculture and haulage, and is still used for draught purposes today. The Budweiser Clydesdales are some of the most famous Clydesdales, and other members of the breed are used as drum horses by the British Household Cavalry. They have also been used to create and improve other breeds.

The breed was developed from Flemish stallions imported to Scotland and crossed with local mares. The first recorded use of the name "Clydesdale" for the breed was in 1826, and by 1830, a system of hiring stallions had begun that resulted in the spread of Clydesdale horses throughout Scotland and into northern England. The first breed registry was formed in 1877. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, thousands of Clydesdales were exported from Scotland and sent throughout the world, including to Australia and New Zealand, where they became known as "the breed that built Australia".

During World War I, population numbers began to decline due to increasing mechanization and war conscription. This decline continued, and by the 1970s, the Rare Breeds Survival Trust considered the breed vulnerable to extinction. Population numbers have increased slightly in the intervening time, but they are still thought to be vulnerable.

The Clydesdale was originally used for agriculture, hauling coal in Lanarkshire, and heavy hauling in Glasgow. Today, Clydesdales are still used for draught purposes, including agriculture, logging, and driving. They are also shown and ridden, as well as kept for pleasure. Clydesdales are known to be the popular breed choice with carriage services and parade horses because of their white, feathery feet.

Along with carriage horses, Clydesdales are also used as show horses. They are shown in lead line and harness classes at county and state fairs, as well as national exhibitions. Some of the most famous members of the breed are the teams that make up the hitches of the Budweiser Clydesdales. These horses were first owned by the Budweiser Brewery at the end of Prohibition in the United States, and have since become an international symbol of both the breed and the brand. The Budweiser breeding program, with its strict standards of colour and conformation, have influenced the look of the breed in the United States to the point that many people believe that Clydesdales are always bay with white markings.

Personality: Chluaith is everything a brown should be. To start, this dragon is positively a support-class. He was hatched knowing his role, and has no objections against the High Reaches Tradition. Like his dam and sire, tradition is important to this brown, even at its ugliest. Not everything in life is fair, after all, and he is the sort who will automatically defer to those of metallic hide. He'll also only-too-happily call out any of his clutchmates who decide to go against the grain, or vocally object should he see something that doesn't follow tradition. He's not a mean dragon, or cruel, but he believes that everything has its place and that each color was hatched for a reason and they shouldn't try to fight their place. He might love his green clutchmates, but he would never encourage them to buck the system or attempt to break the mold.

He is a stubborn beast, and when Chluaith get an idea in his head, good luck trying to change it. This, of course, can be a problem, particularly when his rider and he don't see eye-to-eye. Worse, should someone not of metallic hide, or of any particular rank, tell him to do something, you can bet Chluaith will only go along with the plan if he agrees to the idea. If his rider wants to sleep in but Chluaith thinks its time to study, you can bet he'll have no issue waking His up. The same can be said if he thinks it's time to rest and his rider has a desire to be up and active. The more someone tries to get him to do something, the harder Chluaith will resist--unless, of course, someone of metallic hide or clearly higher rank makes the request! Then Chluaith will be more than happy to oblige. His rider will need to exert quite a bit of willpower to get Chluaith to see his way of things should they not see eye-to-eye. Obviously, he'd move the moons for his rider--but some things the brown just won't budge an inch on.

It's safe to say Chluaith is more of a follower and less of a leader. While there is absolutely no shame or issue with such a trait, it does become an issue when he's foisted into a position to lead. Should his rider be even remotely ambitious, he'll have to work double to get anywhere as Chluaith has a tendency to freeze when he's in a role he feels he shouldn't be in, and begin to panic when decision making falls on his shoulders. He would never aspire to be a Wingleader, and even the thought of being Wingsecond fills him with dread. Not, of course, because he doesn't think browns can't, but because he's most comfortable adhering to orders than making them himself, especially when a wrong move could result in injury or death. While much of the Wingsecond role does come with supporting the Wingleaders choices, Chluaith would much rather be a comfortable and supportive wingrider. Additionally, Chluaith can be blindly loyal to both Weyr and Wing. High Reaches is his home, and he desires to keep it just as it is. He will follow the orders of Weyrwoman and Weyrleader, simply because of their title. He's the sort of brown who doesn't feel as if they should question those who were hatched with metallic and instinct has him deferring to them, regardless of their experience of position. Chluaith doesn't begrudge this though-- everything has its place, and the natural order is the best order. This can cause him to be taken advantage of by those in power, or with the metallic shining hide--so his rider may need to ensure he's not simply a metallics doormat or yes man.

Flaws aside, Chluaith is a strong dragon, both physically and emotionally. He's always happy to support those in his Wing or Weyr as best he's able. Even if he doesn't agree with their views, he will be there to help support them when they're feeling low or are in need of a shoulder to lean upon. Physically, he's capable of carrying and toting all sorts of supplies and goods as needed. He'll never turn his nose up from some sort of hunting expedition, and will always enjoy doing a days hard labor. Swimming and flying are some of his favorite activities; if it's physical, you can bet Chluaith is all in.

Additionally, Chluaith is a brown who rarely loses his cool. He's as even-tempered as they come, even while in the midst of a disagreement or fight. He's not the sort of dragon to lose his head in most scenarios, which will make him a reliable wingrider and clutchmate. Though Thread might be dangerous, this brown isn't the sort to let fear or worry rule him. The only times he seems to lose his even-tempered nature is when he's grieving over the loss of a fellow dragon, or when put in a position of power. The former tears at his hearts in ways that he cannot fight, and the latter is a level of discomfort he can hardly handle.

Positive Traits: Hard Working, Strong, Even Tempered
Negative Traits: Traditionalist, Blindly Loyal, Stubborn

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Egg: A small egg whose shell has a textured feel.

Adult Size: 40'
Physical Attributes: Chluaith is very large for a brown. He is heavily built broad shoulders, strong hind legs, a thick tail, and is very muscular. He is built to do the heavy lifting and while he will never be an agile or fast dragon, he isn't the sort to wear down quickly or easily. Chluaith is certainly heavy as far as a brown goes, and while he might be prone to over-eating (especially as a weyrling) most of his weight comes from the shear amount of muscle on him and less from fat.

Additional Notes: Chluaith will come to enjoy participating in flights as he grows. He does feel as if greens should throw themselves at him, though it would take a special green indeed to capture his hearts and keep him from pursuing others. On the flipside, he doesn't feel as if it's proper for him to chase the golden queens. Not, of course, because he's uninterested in siring a clutch but because he feels it goes against tradition to have a queen and brown pairing.

Impression Effect: To those who know Tonori, Impression would have a stunning effect on him. There is a newfound passion and feeling within him. He might not have been a complicated man, and maybe he never will be--but the feelings that he possess will now be felt all the harder, all the more passionately. There's a newfound fire and life in him that will make him easier to get to know.

Why Me? There was only one Candidate for Chluaith, and that was Tonori. This is a brown dragon who knows what to expect out of life, and he appreciates very much that Tonori is much the same. The two of them will be about as even-tempered as they come, which suits Chluaith just fine! Where some might want a rider who thinks more outside the box, or could be a rebel and rule-breer, Chluaith could never abide such a thing. This brown accepts Tonori as he is, and he absolutely, utterly, adores him for it. To anyone who might look down at him, or think him somehow less intelligent, or somehow lesser period--they will have him to deal with! Tonori's ability to take orders without question, and to follow orders, fits nicely with Chluaith's code-of-tradition. He wouldn't want someone to buck the mold or fights against those in power, and appreciates Tonori's staunch reliability.

That said, Tonori's moral-compass should help temper Chluaith from blindly-following the orders and commands of those with metallic hide. Where Chluaith could easily become a yes-man, or do underhanded things at the whim of someone with power, Tonori might help keep Chluaith on the straight-and-true. Additionally, should Chluaith ever begin to struggle or panic when he's foisted into a position he feels he's not suited, or if they find themselves in some leadership role, such as being asked to take charge of the weyrlings for a drill, Tonori should have the strength of will and calm, soothing nature, to help his brown through such moments. This man is a master of using his skills and knowledge even when he hasn't direction--that could well help Chluaith to become a better brown with age and maturity. Just because Chluaith isn't comfortable doesn't mean Tonori might not take charge.

Ultimately, these two will be reliable and true right out of the gate. They are about as perfect and traditional a pair as High Reaches can find, and whether it's wanted or not, have all the makings of potential High Reaches leadership.

Brown Maestoth

Origin of Name: Maestoth, from Maestoso, one of the eight Lipizzan dynasties descended from the stallion of that name. Maestoso was foaled in 1773 to a Spanish dam by his Kladrub stallion father. His present day descendants all trace through Maestoso X, his several times great-grandson.

Inspiration: Lipizzan

The Lipizzan, or Lipizzaner (Croatian: Lipicanac, Czech: Lipicán, Hungarian: Lipicai, Italian: Lipizzano, Slovene: Lipicanec), is a breed of horse originating in Lipica in Slovenia. Established in 1580, the Lipica stud farm is the world's oldest continuously operating stud farm. It is also closely associated with the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, Austria, where they demonstrate the haute école or "high school" movements of classical dressage, including the highly controlled, stylized jumps and other movements known as the "airs above the ground." The horses at the Spanish Riding School are trained using traditional methods that date back hundreds of years, based on the principles of classical dressage.

The Lipizzan breed dates back to the 16th century, when it was developed with the support of the Habsburg nobility. The breed takes its name from one of the earliest stud farms established, located near the village of Lipica (spelled "Lipizza" in Italian), in modern-day Slovenia. The breed has been endangered numerous times by warfare sweeping Europe, including during the War of the First Coalition, World War I, and World War II. The rescue of the Lipizzans during World War II by American troops was made famous by the Disney movie Miracle of the White Stallions. The breed has also starred or played supporting roles in many movies, TV shows, books, and other media.

Today, eight stallions are recognized as the foundation bloodstock of the breed, all foaled the late 18th and early 19th centuries. All modern Lipizzans trace their bloodlines to these eight stallions, and all breeding stallions have included in their name the name of the foundation sire of their bloodline. Also classic mare lines are known, with up to 35 recognized by various breed registries. The majority of horses are registered through the member organizations of the Lipizzan International Federation, which covers almost 11,000 horses in 19 countries and at 9 state studs in Europe. Most Lipizzans reside in Europe, with smaller numbers in the Americas, Africa, and Australia. Generally gray in color, the Lipizzan is a muscular breed that matures slowly and is long-lived.

Personality: There is truly no stopping Maestoth, nor should anyone try. While he may not be a bronze, he is far better than one, in his personal view. Get to know him better and you may very well find yourself agreeing. He is a force to be reckoned with, and the worst part is that he knows it. Maestoth exudes an aura of competence and great strength of will. Very few would ever be able to convince him that they somehow outstrip him; indeed, it is difficult to imagine that any might, but if someone were to truly gain his respect, he might count them as close seconds. Perhaps.

As arrogant and vain as he is powerful, Maestoth knows that he is where it's at. Unfortunately, he's quite good at convincing others of this, and has no compunction against using every advantage he can to serve his own ends. Naturally he believes that he has the good of the Weyr in mind while pursuing his designs, but that is highly debatable. It will take a strong rider indeed to carrel him into becoming the workhorse he's capable of being. If he were to just apply that strength to the right cause, then he would become a great tool in the Weyr's hands. Whether that might come to pass will depend entirely on how his rider handles early interactions with him... and their own prowess.

One thing to be said in caution is that Maestoth has no respect for females of any species. He does not see why he should waste his time listening to them when they clearly are ruled by their desires. Of course, he will protect any ladies that he finds in a bad spot, as that fits into his own self image... and he does have a passing respect for the Weyrwoman and her queen. Other Golds don't draw him, nor do they bring about anything but the natural obeisance that dragons must necessarily feel toward queens. Truth be told, he is a little resentful of that, finding himself to be fully the equal of any such creature. Better than, in fact.

Alas that the world at large does not share his view on that score. He expects to be treated as the hero of every tale, and why shouldn't he be? There is no doubt that he is courageous, and determined. He is fully capable of being that hero, if only his rider might help to mold him into the role. Like all of dragonkind, he has a powerful hatred for Thread, and is chomping at the bit to destroy it. Maestoth is a natural leader, but whether he can convince others to follow him is another question entirely. He has a lot of learning to do, but has the makings of a great warrior.

Positive Traits: Intrepid, Powerful, Irrepressible
Negative Traits: Arrogant, Self-Serving, Sexist

Starry Night Egg: A large sized egg.

Adult Size: 42'
Physical Attributes: Enormously large for his color, Maestoth's build is far closer to that of a bronze than a brown. He lacks but four feet on the largest bronze size, in fact. Proportionate, but quite muscular and possessed of a wide wingspan, this brown is a force to be sure.

Additional Notes: Has a distinct preference for his own sex. May prefer bronzes in a love-hate sort of way. Also because proving himself dominant over one (or more) would please him to no end. However, when it comes to love he will take any color, so long as it begins with 'b'. Ladies need not apply. That won't stop him from catching a Queen if he feels it will gain him an advantage, however.

Impression Effect: No more will Ilzerin have to feel any jealousy, for Maestoth is all of the love he needs in his life. And, too, it will become ever easier to sway and influence others - while Maestoth may not exactly be charming, he is powerful, and will lend that sense of presence to his rider to boot. Who are those losers in Ilzerin's life who thought him nothing? They are nothing, and he need never think of them again if he chooses not to.

Why Me? Mainly due to the fact that Ilzerin pissed Maestoth off during the Touching. He became convinced that he need prove just how excellent and perfect that he is, as the other did not give him his proper due. This led to thinking overmuch about him, which is when he noticed that they had qualities that melded rather well together. They will be an incredibly vain pair, each convinced that they are no doubt the most perfect specimen. One thing that Maestoth appreciates about Ilzerin is his secret sympathy for the under dog. Although Maestoth does not consider himself an underdog, he certainly knows all too well the perfidy of metallics - bronzes in particular. Maestoth needs Ilzerin's charm and cleverness to soften some of his hard edges. With this brown's force behind him, the sky is the limit for Ilzerin... and perhaps Ilzrein will teach Maestoth just a bit of patience.

Brown Zadelraheth

Origin of Name: One origin tale claims that King Solomon was given a pure Arabian-type mare named Safanad "The Pure" by the Queen of Sheba. A different version says that Solomon gave a stallion, Zad el-Raheb or Zad-el-Rakib "Gift to the Rider", to the Banu Azd people when they came to pay tribute to the king. This legendary stallion was said to be faster than the zebra and the gazelle, and every hunt with him was successful, thus when he was put to stud, he became a founding sire of legend.

Zadelraheth's name is derived from this legendary stallion of King Solomon.

Inspiration: Arabian

The Arabian Horse is a breed of horse that originated on the Arabian Peninsula. With a distinctive head shape and high tail carriage, the Arabian is one of the most easily recognizable horse breeds in the world. It is also one of the oldest breeds, with archaeological evidence of horses in the Middle East that resemble modern Arabians dating back 4,500 years. Throughout history, Arabian horses have spread around the world by both war and trade, used to improve other breeds by adding speed, refinement, endurance, and strong bone. Today, Arabian bloodlines are found in almost every modern breed of riding horse.

The Arabian developed in a desert climate and was prized by the nomadic Bedouin people.

For centuries, Arabian horses lived in the desert in close association with humans. For shelter and protection from theft, prized war mares were sometimes kept in their owner's tent, close to children and everyday family life. Only horses with a naturally good disposition were allowed to reproduce, with the result that Arabians today have a good temperament that, among other examples, makes them one of the few breeds where the United States Equestrian Federation rules allow children to exhibit stallions in nearly all show ring classes, including those limited to riders under 18.

On the other hand, the Arabian is also classified as a "hot-blooded" breed, a category that includes other refined, spirited horses bred for speed, such as the Akhal-Teke, the Barb, and the Thoroughbred. Like other hot-bloods, Arabians' sensitivity and intelligence enable quick learning and greater communication with their riders; however, their intelligence also allows them to learn bad habits as quickly as good ones, and they do not tolerate inept or abusive training practices.

Personality: Zadelraheth knows he comes from quite the noble lineage. If ever there was a child of the Emporer and Empress, this brown dragon is well aware of both his station, his lineage, and the pride that comes from being a dragon in High Reaches Weyr. Naturally, he can't help but be a bit grand in both his desires as well as his expectations. Zadelraheth is the sort of brown who can see himself rising to the top; everything he does he does with magnificence in mind. His riding tack will be made of the finest leather, his weyr will be furnished with all sorts of expensive things, and he will lack in nothing. He doesn't simply have expensive taste, but everything he does is done with style and greatness. When he enters a room, you can bet he'll put on a production to turn heads. A flare of his wings here, the posturing of his stance there as he moves past a crowd, complete with a little trumpet just to catch their attention--nothing is ever done quietly or simply.

And why should he?

Arrogance runs well through Zadelraheth's blood, and rightly so. Certainly, some of his brothers might possess conceit, but Zadelraheth isn't a brown to think little of himself or accept that he's middle-of-the-road in terms of color. He knows what he brings to the table, and knows that there are few as great as him--especially compared to some of the snobbier bronzes. Oh, he certainly doesn't rub others nose in it, and he doesn't necessarily look down at others, as some of his clutchmates might, but Zadelraheth also isn't shy in claiming his way is the better way. Naturally confident, he's not the sort to shy away from whatever might be asked of him; surely, if anyone can get out of a jam, it's this brown, or so he believes. Unfortunately, his arrogance can blind him to the reality of matters; his rider will need to try to keep Zadelraheth's arrogance in check lest the brown find himself in serious trouble.

Thankfully, Zadelraheth has charm in droves. Sure, he might be a bit full of himself, but there's almost something cute about how he thinks he knows best. No matter the company he's in, this dragon can usually appeal to their better natures, and isn't the sort who will ever struggle to make friends. He'd never think of being truly rude, and certainly finds it easy to discuss any topic, with any dragon, of any color. He can be chalk-full of compliments, and endear to their better natures. He's clever enough to know when to stroke someone's ego, when to flirt and gush over another, and when to lay low and find a different approach.

Zadelraheth loves his family and wingmates. Affectionate by nature, he prefers to be with them than without, and enjoys physical contact. Head bumps, nuzzles, twining tails, resting shoulders against, or snuggling comes as naturally to him as talking or flying. If he's not trying to canoodle with someone, something must be wrong--and if something is wrong, you can bet Zadelraheth will be even more in need of physical contact! Brothers, sisters, mother, father, aunts, uncles, strangers--it doesn't matter to him who he's touching so long as he's got someone to be close to!

Benevolent in nature, Zadelraheth isn't afraid to put in the hard work, or take one for the team if it betters those around him. He's generous, almost to a fault, and will always be one of the first to volunteer his time and energy. Full of good-will, this brown dragon is as traditional a hero as all the Harper songs and stories claim. Using his might for right, you can bet Zadelraheth will throw his all into saving the day. If someone needs rescuing, this brown will go up against the foe to ensure a happy ending; if he's exhausted to the bone , but another sweep must happen, he will push through without complaint.
This can cause the brown to burn out, or push himself past his limits. If his rider isn't careful, he'll find a brown who breaks himself against the grindstone and challenge, or worse, who sacrifices his own health for others. You can bet his arrogance doesn't allow him to easily admit when he's in need of aid or rescue himself, but his rider will know, and can hopefully encourage him to take care of himself, too.

Positive Traits: Benevolent, Affectionate, Charismatic
Negative Traits: Grand, Arrogant, Self-Sacrificing

Candy Cane Egg: A medium sized egg with a shell as soft as velvet.

Adult Size: 39'
Physical Attributes: Zadelraheth is on the larger side of average for a brown. Though large, he definitely has a finely chiseled bone structure and seems built more for speed and stamina than brute strength of other browns his size. His head has a peculiar concave profile that gives him a very distinct appearance along with large nostrils and long headknobs. Overall, he is a striking creature both on ground and on wing. His wings are longer than they are broad, which aids him with speed.

Additional Notes: Zadelraheth has stamina in droves. He's less sturdy than a bronze in terms of strength, but could easily outfly one in terms of raw power. While he's not as fast as the blues and greens of the Weyr, he's also known to be swift for a brown, giving him the best of both worlds. His flame is particularly hot and long--and burns might well be in his and his rider's future as they learn how to flame.

When it comes to flights, Zadelraheth seems to prefer those he is close with as opposed to chasing strangers. He's an incredibly affectionate creature when he does catch (or is caught by) another, and has no trouble devoting himself to a one-and-only. Once he does devote himself, he will prefer placing his affections on his true love above others in the Weyr-- but if his preferred companion is not present, he will have no problem finding another (temporary) wingmate to curl against while he waits.

Impression Effect: Fehral is going to suddenly find himself significantly more confident than he has been at High Reaches Weyr--and it shows! The anxiety and fear of being sent to Nabol will be immediately lifted--and any other insecurities or trauma he was suffering from his upbringing are completely washed away. Fehral's a new man now.

Why Me? There was no Candidate on the Sands that needed Zadelraheth' more than Fehral. This is a dragon who has swagger, and he's here to turn this ordinary mine-kid into a High Reaches Superstar. Not, of course, that Fehral isn't absolutely perfect in his own right as he is now -- he is, which is why Zadelraheth could have no other. This brown just wants to make sure that Fehral knows how worthy he is and how wonderful, too. This brown is a dragon who comes from a great lineage, and Fehral needn't ever feel he belongs on the bottom-most rung ever again. Should he begin to doubt himself, Zadelraheth will make sure Fehral is reminded of his greatness, of how wonderful a man he is. If words are not enough, this dragon is read to ooze affection and wrap up his rider in his Wings. As strong as Fehral might be, as buoyant as he appears, this brown is equally strong and will be there to help Fehral when times get tough.

This dragon is a benvolent creature, and found a kindred spirit within his hearts. Where Fehral once stood up for littles down in the mines, now they can both stick up for all those on Pern who must suffer from Thread. And if ever there is some bully who needs to be put in his place, you can bet the two of them will be there to save the day. Where Fehral lacks confidence, Zadelraheth has it in droves--and he will make sure His sees his own worth and is reminded of it every day. On the flipside, Fehral will likely be strong enough, and even-tempered enough, to keep his brown in check when his arrogance does get the better of him. He'll also be able to keep a sensible head and stop his brown from overworking himself during training or Threadfall. Zadelraheth needs someone to care for him and look out for him as Fehral certainly will.

Though they make an unlikely duo, Fehral and Zadelraheth match one another's hearts perfectly.

Fehral (Mr Cheri)

Origin of Name: Cor de la Bryère (1968-2000), nicknamed "Corde", is one of the most influential sires in modern warmblood breeding, particularly among Holsteiners. The strongest asset of the Holsteiner breed is their jumping ability. Even the average Holsteiner usually exhibits great power and scope, and correct technique. The scope and power were inherited from the heavier old Holsteiners, but they lacked carefulness, speed, adjustability, bascule, and technique. Improvement sires like Cor de la Bryére successively eliminated these flaws, making the Holsteiner breed internationally known for Olympic-caliber jumping.

Inspiration: Holsteiner

The Holsteiner is a breed of horse originating in the Schleswig-Holstein region of northern Germany. It is thought to be the oldest of warmblood breeds, tracing back to the 13th century. Though the population is not large, Holsteiners are a dominant force of international show jumping, and are found at the top levels of dressage, combined driving, show hunters, and eventing.

The breeding of this breed began more than seven hundred years ago in the Schleswig-Holstein region, located on the northernmost fringe of Germany. The monks first conducted the organized breeding of these horses in the monasteries of Uetersen, Germany. In fact, they started developing bigger horses that would be suitable to mount on during war as well as suffice the agricultural needs. They gained immense popularity by the sixteenth century, retaining its fame till the eighteenth century.

After the Reformation in the sixteenth century, the task of breeding horse shifted from the monks to the farmers and local authorities, with the German government taking up the responsibilities of these prized pedigrees also assigning a stamm or stem number to each of the mare families for tracking their performance. In fact in 1719, the state had proposed to reward the Holstein farmers breeding the finest stallions. The stallions had to meet certain requirements to qualify for this award like their age should be between four and fifteen, they should be at least 15.2 hands in size and have parented not less than fifteen foals in the last season. The twelve black stallions of this breed had been purchased to lay the foundation of the Celle State Stud in the year 1735.

During the nineteenth century, the breeding of the Holsteiner horses got more improved as the Cleveland Bays and Yorkshire Coach Horses were brought from Britain for the purpose of producing an elegant and fine carriage horse. In 1891, George Ahsbahs, an economic advisor founded the Holsteiner studbook.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the usage of Holsteiner horses underwent a significant change. In the first and second World Wars, there was a high demand for horses that could pull artillery wagons. However, after the World Wars, the population of this breed decreased drastically, with only 1300 Holsteiner mares remaining in 1960. The farmers had also abandoned breeding this breed and the State Stud of Traventhal, established in the nineteenth century, got dissolved. To prevent the Holsteiners from dying out altogether, thirty Holsteiner stallions, along with three thoroughbreds, had been purchased by the Board of Directors of the Federation of Breeders. By 1976, the majority of the Holsteiner stallions were partially or wholly thoroughbred. The newly-developed Holsteiners were agile faster, taller and with a proper jumping style, thus being better than the previous breeds.

In 1978, the American Holsteiner Association was developed to maintain the records and registry of this breed in North America. The Holsteiner Horse Association was also formed in several other countries like Australia and New Zealand, to develop and promote the breeding standards of these horses.

Personality: Cordeth is the sort of blue that fits nicely within High Reaches society, and he prefers it that way. To start, this blue is a very tolerant and compliant dragon--you won't find any judgment in him and he accepts the status quo without nary a complaint. He doesn't mind that he has no position of power, nor is he the sort to grumble about the leadership up top. That said, any dynamic change wouldn't ruffle his feathers either. If a green wanted to boss him around or pick on him, there would be no objections from Cordeth, and he would follow their orders just as willing! He's a tolerant beast, who would no more mind a bunch of Candidates and littles climbing upon him, poking, prodding, and using him as a playmate as he would mind if his clutchmates decided to lay all their woes upon him or use him as a scratching post. He's a very accepting blue, for better and for worse..

Unfortunately, Cordeth's tolerance can easily turn detrimental to his own well-being. There are some who will take advantage of his willingness to accept (seemingly) everything. Pushier or bossier dragons will not hesitate to marshal this blue in whatever way they see fit and won't get any flack from him; additionally, those who wish to use him as a scratching post, or otherwise treat him poorly, would find him a very easy target. Worse, he wouldn't object at all, or call them out on such a thing. Not because he likes the treatment, but because he struggles standing up for himself, and is entirely submissive to stronger personalities. He prefers to be told what to do, and will follow orders as dutifully as any dragon in High Reaches--especially by those of rank. It's easier and simpler to take what he gets than to go against the grain, and dragons with power absolutely intimidate, and sometimes terrify, him.

He is an anxious blue, and those in power (no matter the color) cause him nothing but stress. Metallics in particular terrify him--Zenobiath and Aresoth alone might be the only exceptions to this, but even then, he will always approach them with caution. He is far more comfortable around fellow greens, blues, and browns--but should they ever gain rank, or have particularly aggressive and commanding attitudes, he will immediately melt into a heap of blind-loyalty and fear.

That said, Cordeth knows his duty, and is willing to fight Thread like any blue. He might not always be the first to volunteer, and his rider might need to do a little encouraging to get him going, but once he's in the midst of the battle this blue excels. As a support dragon, Cordeth always knows his place, and takes his orders without fuss. If his Wingleader says jump, he'll ask how high; if a Wingmate is in a jam, he'll be there to save the day. Fighting Thread is one of the times that Cordeth's true colors shine; flaming down the enemy, being a hero, the Weyr will find this blue to be nothing but a gem. He knows what his duty was, and if he must give his life, so be it. This is what blues were hatched to do afterall -- support the Weyr, fight Thread, and ensure Pern gets another day. He might be afraid of those in rank and power, but as part of a cog in the system, this blue excels.

Ever reliable, when Cordeth gives his word, you can bet he will follow it through to the end. Submissive though he might be, he is the sort of dragon who does his best to those he serves and loves. He prefers someone to be in charge, even if they scare him. If there is an expectation placed upon his shoulders, this blue will give it his all. He would never wish to be dubbed a disappointment or need to explain himself to those of real importance and worth. Easily intimidated though, his rider will need to help this blue through when he finds himself at a cross-roads of following through with a task, or being bullied out of it by another.

Positive Traits: Dependable, Dutiful, Accepting
Negative Traits: Anxious, Easily Intimidated, Submissive

Snowman Egg: This medium sized egg feels soft as silk.

Adult Size: 27'
Physical Attributes: Cordeth is average size for a blue dragon. He has powerful hind legs, and will be prone to very strong takeoffs. Leaping from the ground into take off is no issue for this blue. He has a strong neck, broad shoulders, long legs, and is generally considered a handsome blue.

Additional Notes: Cordeth isn't the sort to jump into flights and will only budge from his ledge when there's someone he's absolutely, 100% interested in. He tends to keep his romantic interests quietly tucked away until the time is right--and then, Cordeth will risk it all, for better or for worse. He'll be devoted to the one he loves, even if they're not good for him--so his rider had best make sure he's not falling for any heartbreakers. Additionally, it's not greens or golds that this blue has eyes for, but for blues and browns instead.

He could and would not ever fall for a bronze--too terrified of their presence to be able to truly give them his hearts.

Impression Effect: Tandry will no longer find himself gripped by the wanderlust that has so plagued him. His home is with Cordeth now--and Cordeth's home is High Reaches. While he might still enjoy travelling on a rest-day once they've graduated, he will no longer have the pressing drive or irritability that comes with remaining in one place. Perhaps it's Cordeth's duty driving in the point, but Tandry won't struggle being settled within the Weyrs walls. He found where he belongs--well and truly.

Why Me? Cordeth needs Tandry like a fish needs water to live. This blue needed someone with strong protective instincts, to help ensure he's able to be comforted, and more importantly, protected! Cordeth will always be an easy target--easily picked on by those who need a target, or easily manipulated by those who might wish to use him. It's not that Cordeth doesn't know what's going on or is oblivious--he just struggles so much to stand up for himself, or to know his own worth.

Someone like Tandry, who is protective, capable, and dependable is exactly who he needs to remind him of his value. Additionally, the fact that the man is known to be clingy to those he loves will only work out for Cordeth. This blue is going to need comfort and reassurance, and having that physical connection, that closeness, will help give Cordeth the confidence he needs to succeed.

On the flipside, Tandry will find that he has no longer a drive to roam--but once they're able to travel, Cordeth will give him the world. Literally. They can go wherever they desire--and should Tandry ever entertain the thought of roaming for too long, his dutiful blue will always help to keep him on task and focused on what's important, and what they need to do. Additionally, Cordeth's dependable and reliable nature will ensure that he's there for Tandry, whatever he needs. Where Tandry is known to put others first, Cordeth will always, always, always think of Tandry. He adores His and will always be there to make sure he's being as cared for, as he cares for others.

Tandry is the best part of Cordeth, as far as this blue is concerned, but Cordeth will unknowingly shine light on the best aspects of Tandry, too. Together, they will make a perfect team.

Origin of Name: As the Thoroughbred is known for being used in a horse racing, it was thought his name should be influenced by the act of running. Kourith gets his name from the Haitian Creole word for run, which is kouri.

Inspiration: Thoroughbred

The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. Although the word thoroughbred is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed. Thoroughbreds are considered "hot-blooded" horses that are known for their agility, speed, and spirit.

The Thoroughbred as it is known today was developed in 17th- and 18th-century England, when native mares were crossbred with imported Oriental stallions of Arabian, Barb, and Turkoman breeding. All modern Thoroughbreds can trace their pedigrees to three stallions originally imported into England in the 17th and 18th centuries, and to a larger number of foundation mares of mostly English breeding.

Thoroughbreds are used mainly for racing, but are also bred for other riding disciplines such as show jumping, combined training, dressage, polo, and fox hunting. They are also commonly crossbred to create new breeds or to improve existing ones, and have been influential in the creation of the Quarter Horse, Standardbred, Anglo-Arabian, and various warmblood breeds.

The Thoroughbred is a distinct breed of horse, although people sometimes refer to a purebred horse of any breed as a thoroughbred. The term for any horse or other animal derived from a single breed line is purebred. While the term probably came into general use because the English Thoroughbred's General Stud Book was one of the first breed registries created, in modern usage horse breeders consider it incorrect to refer to any animal as a thoroughbred except for horses belonging to the Thoroughbred breed.

Personality: Watch out world, Kourith is here, and he won't let you forget it. Have you ever seen Pern's most perfect blue? Well, you have now! From the moment he hatched, he was ready to go, chomping at the bit to show that he's everything Pern could want, and more. He's an athletic creature, pushing himself so he (and his rider) might be in peak form. If they're going to be Threadfighters, than they had certainly better ensure they're in the best shape of their lives. This blue will excel during the physical parts of weyrling training and beyond; he won't ever need to be goaded into some game or competition, and while he'll always enjoy running, he'll absolutely adore being able to fly. Once he can take to the skies, his rider will find it more of a challenge to get him to come down--and you can bet he'll be trying to race all of his clutchmates and wingmates, and master the most complicated aerobatics he can muster.

But it's not just physical activities that Kourith excels at, oh no--in fact, this dragon has a dream of succeeding in everything he does. He wasn't here to come in second, and has expectations of himself--and others. He wants things done and done right. He'd prefer if he did everything perfectly the first time, but should he find need to try again, you can bet this blue won't stop until he's succeeded. When it comes to drills, he will keep going until he's certain he has mastered some formation. He's going to be a champion, and that means taking great care that what he puts his mind to. On the one hand, this means if you give Kourith a task, he will ensure that it's done right--on the other hand, this means he can get a bit demanding on how it should be done, especially if he's going to have to work with others. Rest assured, he knows how to tell others how they should be doing things, and won't hesitate poking his blue snout in others business.

Honestly, if something is meant to be done and meant to be done right, Kourith will make sure he's involved whether he's been invited or not. When working with others, he can be quite demanding of his clutchmates. They should follow his rules, and do it his way (nevermind that their way might work just as well.) His desire for excellency in himself, his rider, and the work they do means that he'll push and prod and order and try to get others do things as he sees fit, which is (as far as he's concerned) the right way. The only way. This can, of course, get taxing or cause problems since Kourith absolutely cannot abide less-than-perfect outcomes--and certain personalities and dragon colors won't take being bossed by a blue. Worse, Kourith doesn't really keep others feelings into the equation. He can easily tear down others ideas, or point out their short-comings and flaws, without nary a second thought. Naturally, he doesn't see this as a problem--perfection isn't easy to obtain, after all--but his rider might well need to try to keep him in line. Just because others do things differently than Kourith doesn't mean that it's wrong--additionally, just because something isn't perfect doesn't mean it's not good enough.

Kourith is a passionate creature, and doesn't do things halfway. This blue puts his all into everything he does, and is often dominated by whatever he's feeling at that time. When he's set on a task, you can bet he'll throw every ounce of energy and feeling into accomplishing a goal; whatever he's feeling, he often wants those near him to feel, too. This dragon comes off strong in just about every situation--he's not particularly mild-mannered, and instead will make sure those around him know what he's feeling. As he ages, his passion for things will turn into a passion for others. Any mates or lovers he takes on will find a blue who will give them the moon and stars if they ask--and any rivals will feel the brunt of his wrath and jealousy should they somehow get what he ached for.

Kourith's passionate nature will turn him into a bit of a rakish beast as well as he ages. Where he might find himself enthralled with a number of friends as a hatchling, as he matures, he'll find himself with lovers aplenty. It isn't that he can't settle, but Kourith is the sort of dragon whose passions can't entirely be contained. He will break hearts. He will jump from one interest to the next, and worse, hardly realize their pain. His passion, desire for perfection, and demanding nature can easily cause him to be careless with the hearts and feelings of others--and not just in romantic scenarios, but all cases. Kourith just doesn't always think of others feelings as he should--but as he'll remind those who turn grey eyes upon him, perfect isn't easy.

As far as Kourith is concerned, he and his rider alone are practically perfect in every way. Faranth help them both.

Positive Traits: Athletic, Passionate, Exacting
Negative Traits: Rakish, Demanding, Perfectionist

Red & Green Striped Paper Egg: A small egg that's cool to the touch.

Adult Size: 29'
Physical Attributes: Kourith is just edging near the larger end of the spectrum for a blue. His neck and tail are quite thick and muscular, and he definitely will never be prone to becoming soft and fat. Athletic, it shows in his build--even as a hatchling. He's heavy due to his strength, but surprisingly swift while on wing.

Additional Notes: Kourith will love flights. He's the sort of blue who is chomping at the bit to get up there and show off. He expects he'll fly circles around his competition, but the trick will be reminding him that there's more to flights than speed. Wooing greens is another matter entirely!

His flirty nature means he's open to either sex keeping him company. Whether or not he'll ever fall in love or find a one-and-only is the real mystery--and even then, it's unknown if he'll stop his chasing should he find someone as a long-term-mate! You can't keep this blue out of the skies, or out of the race.

Impression Effect: If Versha and Verica were identical, they are no longer. Physically they might look the same, but Verica now has a glow about her that sets her apart and draws the eye. There's a beauty anew about her, a radiant glow from Impression--and it clearly shows. No longer will they be able to pass off as one another, for Verica now possess a confidence renewed.

Why Me? Kourith chose Verica because in her, and only in her, he saw perfection. To start, her arrogance and belief in herself matched well with his desire for success. She might think she's the best--but Kourith will make sure that the world sees them as the true champions they are. This blue will ensure that Verica's money is where her mouth is; she will get to prove that she is as good as she thinks she is--and all the work that comes with it.

He's a passionate and atheltic creature, and she's energetic and once an acrobat. She will be able to keep up with him, both physically and mentally, and he'll give her a new lease on life. No longer will she be landbound--but this blue will open up the world, and give her the sky. As he grows, her flirtatious nature will go hand-in-hand with his own rakish behavior. Together they well might leave a trail of broken-hearts.

Kourith will temper her impulsive nature. He will help keep her focused and grounded, since much of weyrling training and dragonriding requires executing drills and maneuvers only just so. While being impulsive has its moments--particularly when things don't go according to plan--other times require plans to be executed with precision and care. Additionally, Kourith is a blue who will grant her all the security and comfort that she needs. He will grant her opportunities she once lacked, and instead of simply being in the shadow of her twin, will now be given a chance to lead a life in a different direction should she wish. She isn't simply the second twin, nor need they follow Versha's lead--she has her own life now, to direct as she sees fit.

On the flipside, Verica is far more adaptable to change than Kourith is--where he will obsess with perfection and mastering skills or drills, she might help this blue learn to roll with situations and scenarios outside of their control. He will not master everything, despite his best-efforts; things will go wrong that he hadn't planned for, and he won't be able to make them right or fix them. Her experience in these matters will at least help soften his ridged outlook. Additionally, her natural charm is something Kourith lacks. His passions do him no good when he's driving away allies or future friends and loves--and his outspoken nature often means that he'll be neck-deep in trouble once he starts to explain how a brown, bronze, or queen is wrong. While he understands the rules of High Reaches, he will never understand why others don't see him and Verica as the stars they truly are.

They were meant to shine, and Kourith's passions mean he will sacrifice everything to get Verica what she wants. If comfort and security aren't enough, he'll do whatever he must to give her the world.

Blue Mikkeluth

Origin of Name: Another colt of the “Flaebe” mare was “Mikkel”, born 1818. He was son of the “Flaebestallion”, and was famous for his results in horseracing. Even though he always drew a carriage the 6 Danish miles (41 km.) to the racing ground in a forced speed, he was only defeated once, when he was 16 years old, in a race in Copenhagen. “Mikkel” had been ridden against a clod, and his chest was sore in the left side. It was the only time another horse bested him in a race.

These races were popular among the people, and gave the Knabstrupper the reputation of being powerful and with a great working capacity. “Mikkel” is probably the most famous horse in the Knabstrup breed, and from where Mikkeluth gets his name.

Inspiration: Knabstrupper

The Knabstrupper, also called Knabstrup horse, is a Danish breed of horse with an unusual range of coat coloration. Coat patterns range from solid to a full leopard-spotted coat, with many variants in between. The spotted coat is caused by a genetic mechanism called the leopard complex. The spotted color patterns common in the Knabstrupper are seen in other breeds, such as the Appaloosa horse, though the two breeds developed independently of one another. The breed generally has either warmblood or Baroque horse conformation.

Some Knabstruppers are born with solid colors, such as bay or chestnut.

The Knabstrupper breed was first established in 1812 in Denmark. A chestnut mare with leopard complex blanket markings was bred to a solid-colored stallion, producing a colt with dramatic spotting. The mare, known as the "Flaebe" mare produced many progeny.

All of her children were said to have fantastic colours, and it is claimed she never had a solid-colored foal. The “Flaebe” mare became the breed mother of the Knabstrup horse. She was once bred to a yellow “Frederiksborg” stallion, and their foal was a colt, named “The Flaebestallion”. He became the foundation for the new spotted breed. The “Flaebestallion” also had a very unusual colour as well. He was essentially lighter of colour, was often mentioned as having more than 20 different colours in his coat, and he had a special metal shining glow.

This breed was once very popular, but later was crossbred with other horses, and whether any purebreds from this breed remain is not certain. They do well in dressage and show jumping, and are used in general riding, as carriage and as circus horses. In 1971, three Appaloosa stallions were imported to Denmark to add new blood to the Knabstrupper breed.

Knabstruppers today are bred in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Netherland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and most recently, the Czech Republic, Australia, and New Zealand.

Personality: Hello world! Mikkeluth is here! Equal pats friendly and energetic, this dragon could never be considered shy. He's just as happy to trot up to the wallflowers as he is those basking in the limelight. No amount of rank or hide color will keep this blue at bay, and he'll happily push his rider into any social circle. The more the merrier, after all, and Mikkeluth would much prefer to be surrounded by dear friends!

As a hatchling, he'll have no problems running his rider ragged as he burns through the energy of youth. Unfortunately, even as he ages, Mikkeluth isn't likely to slow down anytime soon. He can't help but have energy in spades, and doesn't seem to know when to slow down or stop. On the one hand, this means he never seems to shy away from putting in the work or effort needed during his training; on the other hand, it means he might well wear out both his rider and clutchmates and run them ragged. Mikkeluth prefers to be a doer than a listener, which can get him in trouble. If his rider isn't careful, this blue might well misunderstand the request, or leap into the fray before he was commanded to do so and upset the entire plan!

To make matters worse, this energetic blue doesn't have much by way of attention span, which can cause him no amount of trouble. Not only does he tend to want to go-go-go, but very little seems to capture his interest for long. It's not that he's not enjoying himself, but Mikkeluth tends to easily be swayed by new stimulation and new interests. Sure, they might be in the middle of practicing a wing drill, but then he might very well veer off and try practicing something else -- even if that's not the order! Or perhaps, while on his way to hunt, he instead decides he wants a bath instead--and drags his ride, and all his gear, right into the lake without nary a thought. Certainly, Mikkeluth doesn't mean any real harm, but he doesn't often think situations through.

Competitive by nature, Mikkeluth really, really likes to win, or come out on top in whatever fashion that might be. Among his clutchmates, he wants to be the fastest and speediest dragon; he wants to do the most flappies; he wants to win every race. As an adult, there's nothing he doesn't think he can't do, and do better, than those around him. Oh, he's not a cruel beast, and would never look down upon his competition (especially when they don't even know they're in a competition)--but rest assured this blue is keeping score and is playing to win. Whatever he sticks his nose in, you can bet Mikkeluth will do his best to come out on top--even when there's nothing to be won.

Unfortunately, when Mikkeluth doesn't win, he can be dubbed a sore loser. The kindness he's most known for can come to a screeching halt, and he's known to sulk or pout, or worse, throw a tantrum. All of his energy, instead of fueling his usual friendly nature, instead fuels his fit of ire and aggravation. Of course, this blue inherited this trait honestly--like his bronze sire, Aresoth, MIkkeluth doesn't take losing well at all. While this might not look to be an issue as a weyrling, as a full grown dragon he'll be even harder to handle, and his rider will have to endure these nasty moments with great patience.

Thankfully, with a bit of time, Mikkeluth can usually find comfort in some sort of distraction. Instead of thinking about how he lost some competition, he can find some new race to win; instead of lashing out and growling about how his wingmate doesn't deserve such a pretty green, he can instead focus on the new green that's rising, or take comfort in the claws of another. There's always something out there that eventually can draw the blue dragon back into happier territory, and once found, he'll be back to being his gregarious self in no time.

Positive Traits: Energetic, Kind, Friendly
Negative Traits: Distracted, Competitive, Sore Loser

Holly Egg: A small egg with a warm shell.

Adult Size: 25'
Physical Attributes: Mikkeluth is on the smaller side for a blue, but that only works out in his favor. He is quick on wing, and as agile as any green. Despite his smaller size, he is strong, and able to outfly even some of his fellow blues in terms of stamina. His legs are long, his haunches strong. His wings are a bit on the small side, but that only helps his fancy flying.

Additional Notes: Mikkeluth is a very fast dragon--even for a blue! On ground and on wing, he's a blue who tends to leave even his rider behind, and must circle back to keep up with him. Racing (especially when on wing) is one of his favorite past times and will never be something outgrow.

When it comes to flights, Mikkeluth is always game! He loves the competition involved with flights, but unfortunately, does have an expectation that he'll win. The real challenge will be getting this blue to find a partner he'd be willing to settle down with long-term--the thrill of the chase is very tempting, and he might not realize that sometimes, there's more to a flight than simply winning.

Impression Effect: While no less distracted or excitable, Aroontwa won't have as much a need to bounce around quite as haphazardly as he used to. He is a dragonrider, after all, and with Impression comes at least a small amount of decorum. Thankfully, he'll have other outlets on which to focus his ebullience and over all energy--and he'll still likely always talk with his hands. Just in a less jarring and haphazard way!

Why Me? Watch out world -- no really, you had better watch out because Mikkeluth and Aroontwa are not at all the most self-aware weyrlings out there. With an absentminded rider, and a distracted dragon, it's highly possible these two will be like fire and oil. Ah, but Mikkeluth would have no other, and Aroontwa suits him ever so perfectly!

To start, there was only one Candidate on the Sands that could keep up with Mikkeluth's own over-abundance of energy, and that was Aroontwa! This blue will always be energetic, and the two will always find a willing and energetic companion in the other. Never will Aroontwa need to fell out of place or unaccepted, for this blue loves him just the way he is. Where Aroontwa's family weren't sure what to do with so much energy, and where others may have found him strange, Mikkeluth thinks he hung the sun and the moons--and will be as good a playmate and friend as Aroontwa could wish for.

Additionally, Mikkeluth is a competitive beast, who does rather enjoy racing and winning. While he's a bit of an oblivious beast, he has enough drive and focus to help Aroontwa find more direction in his life. He'll gain a new-found purpose, and be able to put his energy (and Mikkeluths) into the betterment of Pern. On the flipside, Aroontwa's breezy nature will help Mikkeluth when he loses or finds himself in a foul mood. The blue does not do well when he doesn't win (an inherited trait from his father) but his rider will be the perfect balm to his bruised hearts, and should be able to help distract him from the negativity.

Assuming the two survive weyrling training, their energy will be put to great use by both Weyr and Wing.

Aroontwa (faesinger)

Origin of Name: Friesians have also become popular in the film and entertainment industry. The breed owes much of its current popularity to the stallion Othello, who appeared in the 1985 film Ladyhawke. Other films that have used Friesian horses include Eragon, The Mask of Zorro, and 300. They are also commonly seen in live entertainment shows such as circus acts and exhibitions.

It is in honor of Othello that Othelloth derives his name.

Inspiration: Fresian

The Friesian (also Frizian) is a horse breed originating in Friesland, in the Netherlands. Although the conformation of the breed resembles that of a light draught horse, Friesians are graceful and nimble for their size. It is believed that during the Middle Ages, ancestors of Friesian horses were in great demand as war horses throughout continental Europe. Through the Early Middle Ages and High Middle Ages, their size enabled them to carry a knight in armour. In the Late Middle Ages, heavier, draught type animals were needed. Though the breed nearly became extinct on more than one occasion, the modern day Friesian horse is growing in numbers and popularity, used both in harness and under saddle. Most recently, the breed is being introduced to the field of dressage.

The Friesian breed is most often recognized by its black coat colour, however, colour alone is not the only distinguishing characteristic; Friesians are occasionally chestnut as some bloodlines do carry the "red" ('e') gene. In the 1930s, chestnuts and bays were seen. Friesians rarely have white markings of any kind; most registries allow only a small star on the forehead for purebred registration. To be accepted as breeding stock by the FPS studbook (Friesch Paarden Stamboek), a stallion must pass a rigorous approval process.

Friesians are incredibly versatile and willing, and although they are large in stature they are known for their elegance and high-stepping gait. This makes them ideal for use as harness horses, creating a powerful, agile, and flashy driving team. They are becoming increasingly popular as dressage horses due to their power, movement, and body control. They are also great all-around horses and have gentle dispositions.

Personality: This blue dragon is certainly the son of the Emperor and Empress, and could easily consider himself a little lord if he saw fit to claim such a thing. Ever the regal beast, he doesn't let the fact that he's only a blue stop him from walking through life as if he might well be the next Weyrleader. He knows that his blood is of a strong lineage, and he the great-grandson of greatness. Everything about his carriage screams importance, and as far as this blue is concerned, it's true. He IS important, he IS powerful, and he IS as good as he thinks himself to be. Oh, one needn't ever think Othelloth has forgotten his place; though he might be of proud bearing, he is the sort of dragon who understands the rules and how to play the game. He knows he will be given little due to the color of his hide, but that won't break his spirit or bring him down. Power doesn't save one from Thread after all; being a Wingleader doesn't cause threadscore to heal any faster, and being Weyrleader doesn't somehow lessen the chance of injury or death. He knows he will never have title or rank, but that doesn't mean he can't be a Big Damn Hero. Not every hero's story is sung, after all.

Othelloth is here to save Pern from its enemies, and at this point, the Enemy is Thread. Even as a weyrling, this dragon is chomping at the bit to spit flame and assist the wings. He wants to fight, not for glory or honor or praise, but because it's simply the right thing to do. He isn't afraid of death, and his rider shouldn't be either. They will make a glorious pair, ready to serve the Weyr they were hatched from, and to protect their loved ones and the innocent of Pern. No matter how bleak the outcome seems, Othelloth will face it down fearlessly. He's a courageous creature, and will helpfully throw himself into harms way so as to save those who cannot save themselves. Even when the odds are stacked against him, this blue will face them down without hesitation or concern. His bravery knows no bounds.

It isn't just Thread that Othelloth is willing to fight--he's ready to take on his riders burdens as his own, or his dearest loves. Whatever battle they might be fighting, Othelloth will interfere on their behalf. They can call on him and he will do what is right and good and have little care for who he must take down in the process. He is here to ensure his might is used for right.. And that is where things can get complicated.

Othelloth is a vengeful creature, and does not forget slights against him, his rider, or his loved ones particularly well. Should his rider have a falling out with a wingmate or lover, Othelloth will likely turn upon them without so much as a second thought. Continue to harass them, and he will deal with the problem personally. Snapping, snarling, intimidating, even threatening--Othelloth can turn into the same sort of bully he hates. Once you're off his good list, you will likely struggle to ever find yourself back upon it. He can be quite black-and-white and will not hesitate to seek out some form of retaliation or revenge. If his rider doesn't keep Othelloth in mind, he will do what he can to ensure his enemies (perceived or otherwise) get theirs--and sometimes he'll act without knowing the full story. An eye for the eye, as the saying goes--and this blue is happy to remove it himself.

Any who find themselves on Othelloth's naughty list will find that they know it long before vengeance has been had. This blue is a very opinionated creature, especially when angered, and has no problem letting his thoughts be known. He can't help but feel as if his views are the right views, and will certainly give every attempt to get others to agree with him. Battles, after all, aren't always physical in nature--and Othelloth is only too happy to have a battle of wits and words.

The ends justify the means, after all, and Othelloth is the sort of blue who is happy to do what he must to get his way. Usually, Othelloth's intentions are pure, but getting the results he wants can lead him down some questionable paths if his rider isn't careful to keep him in check. His need for vengeance and retaliation can have him do things he wouldn't otherwise be proud to do; his rider will need to make sure this blue doesn't do anything rash or doesn't attempt to use individuals for his own gain.

To make matters worse, Othelloth will gain the reputation of not just being a little lord, but he'll become ever the charmer as he ages. He will find he has a silver tongue when he must, and he'll not hesitate to ooze charm. Even his insults will begin to sound like compliments, for he will know how to craft words, and blind others with his confidence and allure. He'll never lack a coterie of lovers and admirers--and he'll take male or female alike under his wing and into his claws. Othelloth will give into their desires, something he's only too happy to do--especially if there's something he wants from them, or worse, needs them for.

His charm isn't always used in such scheming ways, and he can be genuinely charismatic. He certainly doesn't go out of his way to be rude or offend, and will happily enjoy capturing his clutchmates, and eventual wingmates, intrigue. And why shouldn't he? You catch more flies with honey than vinegar and Othelloth is blessed with an arsenal of both.

Positive Traits: Courageous, Charming, Regal
Negative Traits: Machiavellian, Opinionated, Vengeful

Ding-Dong Bell Egg: A large egg whose shell is quite firm to the touch.

Adult Size: 32'
Physical Attributes: Being a substantially large blue, it might surprise the world that Othelloth is surprisingly swift and nimble. He's more lean than bulky, and while in the air it is clear he is just as agile as some of his smaller kin. His legs are long, and his neck ridges a bit thicker when compared to an average dragon.

Additional Notes: Othelloth's charm means he'll wind up getting himself into trouble as he ages. No dragon is off limits to him--whether they be happily-mated or of metallic hide. He'll enjoy the thrill of the chase during Flights, but will be discerning about who he goes after. Sometimes it's for a reason (perhaps to get his rider companionship, or simply because it would elevate his status in some fashion) but rarely is it ever for true-love.

It will take time to catch this blue's hearts--for many might think they will have him ensnared, but more often than not, it's a simple dalliance on this blue's part. He doesn't go out of his way to break hearts, but finding his true life's companion could well take time.

Until then, he'll enjoy the bounty the Weyr offers, and then some.

Impression Effect: Lauthisen will lose his suspicion of others, and gain a newfound swagger instead. There is no need to be suspicious with his dragon near--no need to worry about any one betraying his trust, or some secret motive, for he has found a true champion in Othelloth. If weyrling training is all about connections, he'll now be far more easily able to make them.

Why Me? Othelloth had been entirely unimpressed with the offerings given at the Touching, but he always knew that Lauthisen was the best of the bunch, by far. Lauthisen's proud nature was an immediate draw to this blue, who would expect nothing less in a rider of his. If anything, this blue will be an enabler, encouraging His to stand as tall as any bronzerider. He's no longer just a simple Candidate, or a lowly beastcrafter--he is His, and Othelloth's ambitious nature will ensure that Pern knows both their names.

Like rider like dragon, it doesn't serve one well to get on their bad side. Lauthisen's ability to hold a grudge will only be that much worse when paired with Othelloth's. Any who cross this pair might well find themselves in a world of trouble. That said, it's clear that Lauthisen's loyalty isn't blind, which means he could help temper Othelloth at his absolute worst. While it's one thing to hold a grudge or get back at those who do them wrong, this blue dragon can go a bit too far. Lauthisen will be strong enough, and observant enough, to know when it's time to keep his blue in check.

Additionally, Lauthisen is known to be an asocial creature, which is where Othelloth will have an immediate effect. This blue is far form being a hermit, and will expect to live a life out in the open, with a gaggle of admirers, and charm to spare. He will help Lauthisen branch out with others, and make worthy and meaningful connections; as he grows, his charm should rub off on Lauthisen as well. On the flipside, Lauthisen should be able temper Othelloth from taking gross advantage of more simple-minded or unobservant sorts. The ends justify the means for this blue, but Lauthisen's isn't cruel, which means he can keep his dragon from doing something they both might regret.

While it's possible these two will find themselves in a whole world of trouble, it's equally possible they might find themselves on top of the world.

Lauthisen (Tsunake)

Blue Vardoth

Origin of Name: Vardoth, named for the vardos used by the Romanichal people to travel around the British Isles. As explained below, a vardo is a type of horse-drawn wagon. Possessing a chimney, it is commonly thought of as being highly decorated, intricately carved, brightly painted, and even gilded. The British Romani tradition of the vardo is seen as a high cultural point of both artistic design and a masterpiece of woodcrafters art. The heyday of the living wagon lasted for roughly 70 years, from the mid-1800s through the first two decades of the twentieth century. Not used for year-around living today, they are shown at the Romanichal (British Romani) horse fairs held throughout the year, the best known of which is Appleby Horse Fair.

Inspiration: Irish Cob

The Irish Cob Horse is a type or breed of domestic horse from the island of Ireland. It is a small, solidly-built horse of cob conformation and is often, but not always, piebald or skewbald; it is particularly associated with the Irish Traveler and Romani traveling peoples of Britain and Ireland. There was no stud-book or breed association for horses of this type until 1996. It is now considered a breed and can be registered by the Traditional Gypsy Cob Association (TGCA).

From about 1850 travelling people in the British Isles began to use a distinct type of horse to pull their vardos, the caravans in which they had just begun to live and travel. The color and look of the breed were refined in the years after the Second World War. Horses of this type were first exported to the United States in 1996.

The Irish Cob Horse was bred by the Roma of Great Britain to pull the vardos in which they lived and traveled. The Roma had arrived in the British Isles by 1500 AD, but they did not begin to live in vardos until around 1850. Prior to that, they traveled in tilted carts or afoot and slept either under or in these carts or in small tents. The peak usage of the Romani caravan occurred in the latter part of the 19th century and the first two decades of the 20th.

Some aspects of training, management, and characteristics of a horse used to pull a vardo are unique. For example, the horse is trained not to stop until it reaches the top of a hill; otherwise it may not be able to get started again. Training begins at a very early age with the young horse tied "with a short rope from the head to the trace-ring on the collar of the shaft-horse", and led along on the off side. An old hat is sometimes placed on a fearful horse's head so as to keep him from seeing back over the top of his blinkers at the wagon looming at his back. A horse used to pull a vardo which was a permanent home was usually in very good condition due to a combination of exercise, grazing a variety of greens in the hedgerows, and good quality care; the horse was considered part of the family. Since the family's children lived in close proximity to the horse, one having "an unreliable temper could not be tolerated".

The Irish Cob Horse was also used to pull the "tradesman's cart . . . used in conjunction with the caravan as a runabout and work vehicle and whilst on a journey". This is also known as a flatbed or a trolley, and examples appear in the annual London Harness Horse Parade.

Personality: While the world around him might quake, Vardoth will remain unmoved. He is as calm as a still pool of water, and unlike that very pool, unlikely to stir even for the wind. Yet within Vardoth exists a quiet joy, as of a repeating sound that echoes ceaselessly for none but he to hear. He is happy, however, to share that peaceful serenity and good cheer with others, should they need it. Indeed, he has a protective and even possessive nature, taking those under his wing who seem to need extra care. For Vardoth has great capacity for caring, and does not at all mind being another's rock. In fact, he prefers it that way.

All the same, his overall lassitude does not lend itself well to drills or sweeps; Vardoth does not enjoy the workaholic nature that seems to overcome some of his fellows, possessing instead a tendency toward sheer laziness. Does he really need to participate this time? Might his energy not be better spent in another, more pleasant manner? No? Very well. If he must. Don't think that this blue will happily go to do that thing that he has seen others slave away at. He will be grudging, and even inclined toward giving up before the victor is decided. Everything is a little too hard... unless it involves something that Vardoth likes.

One would be forgiven for thinking that every part of Vardoth is lazy... but indeed not. When it comes to throwing himself between danger and those whom he loves, he will do it without hesitation. He will even push himself to get there. Of course, that is not to say that he would risk either his or his rider's lives, but he'll certainly rise to the occasion. Just don't let Vardoth know that you notice him doing it, or he'll surely return to his usual lax ways. After all, this blue would much rather be lounging in the sun than facing down something truly tiresome.

Positive Traits: Even-keeled, joyful, relaxed
Negative Traits: Protective, indolent, defeatist

Egg: Medium red and green present egg.

Adult Size: 28'
Physical Attributes: Although of average size, Vardoth is strong boned. He enjoys spreading his wide wings on his ledge to sun them, where their size and strength can be admired.

Additional Notes: There is one and only dragon that Vardoth has ever loved, even if he won't name his name. No one else could turn his head, and certainly not his hearts. That said, he might rise to Chase if he thought that other might be in evidence... but if he discovered otherwise, he'd probably quit the Flight. After all, he is a bit of a lazy beast. If it's not his true love, he won't budge himself to follow after. In Threadfall he will be effective if his rider keeps a firm hand on him, and gives him plenty of praise for his actions.

Impression Effect: Some of Chayrel's blunt edges will be smoothed by Vardoth, whose air of relaxation and peace will overcome his tendency toward defensiveness. It will be as though a blanket of calm passes over him, collecting him in on all sides into a protective mantle. Never again will Chayrel need to feel envious, for Vardoth loves nothing more than him. Chayrel will also gain a +10 to charisma when interacting with others in the Weyr as a result of Vardoth's influence. Furthermore, he will find it easier to open up to others, as he need never again fear being betrayed.

Why Me? Oh Chayrel, Vardoth knew that you were his perfect match from the start. Vardoth sees so much potential in his rider, and he can't believe no one has ever honed it into what it could be. He would never have chosen someone who didn't need him. In point of fact, Vardoth needs Chayrel as much as Chayrel needs him, for he has a tendency to give up well before it's time to throw in the towel. Chayrel's drive to get the upper hand is the saving grace that he requires to get himself out of that rut. Where Chayrel has been deprived of happiness, he will now be filled with a joy that seems almost without end.

Blue Wahokinth

Origin of Name: VWahokinth’s name comes from Wahoo King, the first registered gelding in the APHA. Already a famous roping horse, he was instrumental in building interest in the breed and helping the registry gain members during the initial years of its growth. Though he was a gelding, rather than a stallion and as such could not continue his bloodline, his importance to the American Paint Horse Association and thus his breed cannot be understated.

Inspiration: American Paint

Descended from horses introduced by the Spanish conquistadors, Paints became part of the herds of wild horses that roamed the Western deserts and plains. Once domesticated, because of their working ability and heart, the Paint was cherished by cowboys for cattle work. Native Americans revered the Paint, which they believed to possess magical powers.

While over the years the conformation and athletic ability of those rugged mounts of the Old West have been improved by breeders, the unusual coat patterns and coloring remain the same. The stock-type conformation, intelligence, and willing attitude make the American Paint Horse an excellent horse for pleasure riding, ranch work, rodeo, trail riding, racing, showing, or simply as a friendly mount for the kids.

Built for versatility, the American Paint Horse is generally short-coupled, strong-boned and well balanced. Yet Paints display a remarkable degree of refinement and beauty, especially about the head and neck.

The Paint Horse's colorful coat pattern defines the breed, because it is perhaps the most obvious trait. However, Paint Horses must also possess a distinct stock-type conformation. Paints come in an endless variety of patterns. Their coat is always a combination of white with any of the basic colors common to horses: black, bay, brown, chestnut, dun, grulla, sorrel, palomino, gray and roan. Regardless of color, no two horses are exactly alike in coat pattern.

Personality: A dragon of quick-thinking, Wahokinth is among the first to catch [on to a new technique or a new trick, and is able to put a plan into practice on the fly that, while not always thought through generally has a good chance of success--- if, of course, he could ever get more than halfway through it without getting his attention caught by something else. Wahokinth is clever, it’s true, but his cleverness comes as a double-edged sword; he gets bored easily and his mind wanders, or his attention will be caught by something much more interesting than whatever is in front of his nose, and all his being will be focused on the new idea, the old forgotten as though it had never been. If he can be kept properly engaged, however, his ability to quickly pick things up begins to show through, and he can learn new things at a tremendous rate.

Regardless of whether or not he’s just let himself get distracted away from something he needed to focus on, the odds are good that Wahokinth is having a good day. He isn’t bothered by much, and maintains a persistent, steady optimism that no matter what goes wrong, things will work out for the best just as long as you work hard enough. Certainly, he’ll be disappointed when things don’t go his way, but there’s always something to be learned in every experience, and it can’t all be terrible for long; things will get better. He’ll become a better flyer, a better fighter, and he’ll do it because of everything he’s learning now.

Unfortunately, he can never resist a chance to show off what he’s learned, though usually this takes the form of competing with his twin specifically, as she’s the one Clutchmate he regards as a true rival. If he cannot best her, then there will be no meaning in besting everyone else, and so he can often be found seeking her out and trying to engage her in some manner of competition, a habit that is up to his rider to rein in to more manageable levels. This is especially necessary in Wahokinth’s case because he does not tend to think before he suggests something or accepts a challenge.

Positive Traits: Clever, optimistic, playful
Negative Traits: Competitive, impulsive, distractible

Adult Size: 26’
Physical Attributes: Somewhat shorter in length and stockier than your average blue, Wahokinth makes up for it with larger-than-average wings and particularly powerful shoulders, accompanied by noticeably long tail.. He also sports a rather delicate head and neck, the latter more graceful than might be expected with such a stocky body.

Additional Notes: While he’s only of average speed, Wahokinth boasts a bit more maneuverability than most blues, along with above-average stamina. All-in-all, he’ll perform well during flights, but it will be up to his rider to keep him focused and on track.

When it comes to flights, he’s competitive against other challengers, but doesn’t appear to have any preference in who he chases, as he’s far more interested in outdoing everyone he can than in his quarry. To that end, he’s not the sort who will be victorious often, but neither is he overly bothered by failure. So long as he’s met his own standards, Wahokinth is satisfied.

He shares a particularly close relationship with his twin sister Uvaldoth, though their definition of close manifests as a rivalry wherein they are constantly challenging one another and trying to outdo the other, helping each reach new heights (and have a lot of fun) while doing so.

In contrast to Uvaldoth, Wahokinth insists it was him that pushed through their eggshell first.

Why Me? Wahokinth, above everything else, wanted a partner in crime. He’s found it in Kaniel, who is playful and adventurous enough to match him, who goes through life with a certain level of nonchalance that makes things roll off of him, whose cockiness and confidence means he won’t back down or try to hold Wahokinth back from what he can do--- but he was also drawn to His because of the way he sees the world, takes note of everything around him, and finds that he feels safe with someone as alert as Kaniel.

Kaniel seeks adventure, seeks something more than a quiet, mundane life, and Wahokinth can give him that excitement. With a dragon as competitive and impulsive as Wahokinth, there will never be a dull moment, and provided Kaniel can keep up with him, his life is slated to be eternally interesting.

(That his twin Impressed to His’ sister is a mere coincidence, but Wahokinth believes it to be the only option there ever was--- and maybe that’s true.)

Green Arwainth

Origin of Name: One unique note is that Falabellas can also be used as guide animals due to their small size and easy trainability. Arwainth derives her name from the Welsh word for "guide", which is arwain.

Inspiration: Falabella

The Falabella miniature horse is one of the smallest breeds of horse in the world, seldom taller than 8 hands (32 inches, 81 cm) in height at the withers. The Falabella, despite its size, is not considered a pony, but rather is a miniature horse. The breed is proportioned similarly to horses, other than in size. They are similar to Thoroughbreds or Arabs in their conformation, with a sleek coat and a slim frame. The Falabella’s body is small and compact. The breed also inherited some cob-like features from pony bloodlines, including sturdy bone, and a thicker hair coat, particularly the mane, tail and around the fetlocks. The head may be slightly larger and the neck is often stouter by comparison with a normal-sized horse, but overall, the animal is not unusually or abnormally proportioned.

The ancestral stock of the horse of South America descended from horses brought to the western hemisphere by the Spanish of Andalusian and other Iberian bloodlines. In the southern part of the continent, significant numbers of these horses developed within geographically isolated conditions and by the mid-19th century, there were any number of smaller, inbred animals in the herds of Mapuche of southern Buenos Aires province in Olavarría, Argentina.
The Falabella horse was originally developed in Argentina from local horses of Criollo stock, beginning in 1868 with the breeding program of Patrick Newtall. When Newtall died, the herd and breeding methods were passed to Newtall's son-in-law, Juan Falabella. Juan added additional bloodlines, including the Welsh Pony, Shetland pony, and small Thoroughbreds. With considerable inbreeding, he was able to gain consistently small size within the herd.

Beginning in the 1940s, a descendant, Julio C. Falabella, created a formal breed registry, the Establecimientos Falabella, now the Asociación de Criadores de Caballos Falabella (Falabella Horse Breeders Association), and worked to standardize the breed to reach a consistent height, first achieving an average size of under 100 cm (40 in). Later breeders developed the modern standard, a horse breed that averaged approximately 76 cm (30 in) in height.

The first Falabella horses were imported to the United States In 1962, when John Aleno of Argentina sold 12 Falabella stallions to the Regina Winery in Etiwanda, California. Aleno had purchased the stallions from Julio Falabella. The winery used them to drive a small stagecoach in parades to promote their wine. Most of the Falabella miniature horses in the United States today descend from these 12 stallions

Personality: How can Arwainth help you today? This is the thought that drives Arwainth from the moment she opens her eyes in the morning, and is the last thought she thinks of before she curls up to sleep at night. To say she's a helpful creature is an understatement, for this little dragon won't stop at anything if she thinks she can be of any assistance. Need someone to accompany you to the Lake? Arwainth will go! Need someone to cheer you up? Arwainth will be your personal little cheerleader. If the Weyrlingmaster needs someone to volunteer, you can bet that Arwainth is ever eager to leap into the fray. Unless, of course, someone doesn't want to be the last to go--then the little green will happily sit on her wings so they needn't be last.

Unfortunately, her eagerness to help can also turn into an eagerness to please. This small green can be a bit oblivious, and might not understand when someone is taking advantage of her desire to be helpful. Need someone to be a guard? Arwainth will happily look out for the Weyrlingmaster, while allowing a fellow to break some rule or get into trouble. Need someone to do the work for you? Arwainth's your gal! Her rider will need to keep a careful eye on this little one to ensure she isn't taken advantage of, for it would be very easy indeed--and Arwainth none the wiser.

Her good-nature means that this green won't hardly utter a bad word against another, even when it's warranted. She goes through life wearing rose-colored glasses, and wouldn't assume the worst even if it hit her on the head! It's just not Arwainth's style. While she might be distressed or upset or angry (yes, she can feel those emotions) such negativity is rare, and doesn't last long. No, too easily and too quickly Arwainth's will find a way to fix the situation, or conjure some new goal in mind. She would never hold a grudge, and instead prefers to look on the bright side of life. Everything will work out in the end, you'll see. Happily-ever-afters are this green's motto and she will believe, with every fiber of her being, that those endings are everybody's ending, no matter how bleak the current situation.

Unfortunately, Arwainth's desire to look at the best-possible-outcome (and to help ensure such a future) means she can be more than a little naive. Of course they'll all make it through weyrling trianing as the best of friends, why wouldn't they? Of course they'll all see through their training alive and well and minimally scored! Why yes, she has the utmost faith that everything will turn out right. When things do go awry, Arwainth's staunch certainty in good can help pull her through the hard times, but it also means she can come off tone-deaf during serious matters, or might drive others away by her incessant belief that some happy-ending is just around the corner.

During the rough patches life can often throw, Arwainth can struggle in reading the tone of a room. It doesn't occur to her that sometimes people need to grieve, or time to process bad news. While she might mourn the loss of a loved one, or might feel bad in the aftermath of a fight, Arwainth tends to bounce back quickly and doesn't understand why some of her peers do not. Unfortunately, seeing them in such a rough spot, will kick in a desire to help them recover as easily as she did, too! This results in her sticking her snout in places she otherwise shouldn't or overwhelming others with unwanted attention and care. Not everyone wants to be happy or helped, and not every situation will have a happy ending, and this can cause her to drive her friends and loved ones away. The path to hell is paved with good intentions, and Arwainth frequently is found skipping down that very road.

Positive Traits: Happy, Good-natured, Helpful
Negative Traits: Eager to Please, Naive, Oblivious

Blue Ornament Egg: A small egg smooth to the touch.

Adult Size: 18'
Physical Attributes: Small and compact, this little green is perfectly proportioned as far as dragons go -- though her wedge shaped head might be just a bit too big even as an adult. It's almost like she never quite grew into it. She is a slim creature, though sturdy and not nearly as delicate as her size might appear.

Additional Notes: For being so small, she has a surprising amount of stamina--for a green, of course. She's hard-working, and always happy to help assist those who need it. Her flame-length, unfortunately, will always be a bit on the weak side.

As far as flights are concerned, Arwainth seems to enjoy them immensely. She's not a jealous or competitive creature, but has the possibility of leaving her suitors for others. All it takes is one suitor that didn't win to pout and she might well try to cheer them up. Arwainth certainly doesn't go out there to break hearts, but she will likely jump from partner-to-partner as she tries to help ease their lonely nights.

Impression Effect: Fivudal will find his jadedness towards others is all but shattered the moment this little green locks her eyes with him. Certainly, there are bad people out there and many who take advantage or abuse others--but not every heart is irredeemable, and those that are, are truly the minority. So focused on the bad, he's forgotten to see how much good is out there-- and Arwainth is the set of rose-colored goggles he needs. While he might never be as accepting as his green, he will find himself looking at the world with new, less cynical eyes.

Why Me? Fivudal and Arwainth are a balanced and perfect team. To start, this little green will always keep in mind her riders needs--so anytime Fivudal forgets to eat or drink or puts his needs last, this little green will be there to fuss over him, and ensure she can assist him in giving him whatever he might lack! Additionally, Arwainth will be a balm against Fivudal's self-deprecation. Where he might feel like a failure, or rip into himself when something doesn't go quite top plan, this little green will be there to pick him right back or stop him from letting those thoughts consume him. He can do no wrong in her eyes, and Fivudal will feel that constant stream of recognition and unending support.

On the flipside, Fivudal's life experience and naturally caring nature will ensure that Arwainth's naivety will be more balanced. When the best-possible-outcome doesn't happen, or tragedy hits, Fivudal should be able to help her through the surprise and pain that grips her. When something doesn't go according to her plans of a happily-ever-after, he'll be able to guide her through it and explain. Additionally, his experience in dealing with the ugly side of life also means he might temper her natural tone-deaf nature. There is a time and place to encourage folks to move on or look for greener pastures, and there is a time to grieve. Fivudal will also be able to ensure that Arwainth's not taken advantage of by those who are less pure-of-heart. Even with a less-jaded outlook on life, he has experience and knowledge enough to know when someone is being cruel or unkind--or is using his precious little girl!

Green Aveligenth

Origin of Name: Aveligenth from Avelignese, the other name for Haflingers.

Inspiration: Haflinger

The Haflinger, also known as the Avelignese, is a breed of horse developed in Austria and northern Italy (namely Hafling in South Tyrol region) during the late 19th century. Haflinger horses are relatively small, are always chestnut with flaxen mane and tail, have distinctive gaits described as energetic but smooth, and are well-muscled yet elegant. The breed traces its ancestry to the Middle Ages; several theories for its origin exist. Haflingers, developed for use in mountainous terrain, are known for their hardiness. Their current conformation and appearance are the result of infusions of bloodlines from Arabian and various European breeds into the original native Tyrolean ponies. The foundation sire, 249 Folie, was born in 1874; by 1904, the first breeders' cooperative was formed. All Haflingers can trace their lineage back to Folie through one of seven bloodlines. World Wars I and II, as well as the Great Depression, had a detrimental effect on the breed, and lower-quality animals were used at times to save the breed from extinction. During World War II, breeders focused on horses that were shorter and more draft-like, favored by the military for use as packhorses. The emphasis after the war shifted toward animals of increased refinement and height.

In the postwar era, the Haflinger was indiscriminately crossed with other breeds and some observers feared the breed was in renewed danger of extinction. However, starting in 1946, breeders focused on producing purebred Haflingers and a closed stud book was created. Interest in the breed increased in other countries, and between 1950 and 1974, the population grew, even while the overall European horse population decreased. Population numbers continued to increase steadily, and as of 2005, almost 250,000 Haflingers existed worldwide. Breeding farms are in several countries, although most of the breeding stock still comes from Austria. In 2003, a Haflinger became the first horse to be cloned, resulting in a filly named Prometea.

Haflingers have many uses, including light draft, harness work, and various under-saddle disciplines such as endurance riding, dressage, equestrian vaulting, and therapeutic riding. They are also still used by the Austrian and German armies for work in rough terrain. The World Haflinger Federation, the international governing body that controls breed standards for the Haflinger, is made up of a confederation of 22 national registries, and helps set breeding objectives, guidelines, and rules for its member organizations.

Personality: Steady Aveligenth. Confident Aveligenth. Intelligent Aveligenth. The patient calm to her siblings warring and snapping and strife. She is a green yes, she’s aware of her station, yes. Why would she be angry with that? That is simply the way of the world and that’s that. The fanfare is for her siblings, Aveligenth is much more interested in devouring new knowledge. New skills, new techniques for flight, drills, anything. Quick as a whip, Aveligenth’s greatest pleasure is in learning. At least one new skill or nugget of knowledge a day is absolutely necessary to keep her happy.

Aveligenth’s confidence often leads her to giving advice freely even if she isn’t quite sure how something goes. Hers likely knows and if even Shiammi doesn’t then they’ll find out together! No one should be left bereft of knowledge when it’s available. Knowledge that isn’t available or something she shouldn’t be privy to? Nonsense. Absolute nonsense. If she’s told no, then there better be a good reason for why she shouldn’t know something. ‘Because I said so’s are the easiest way to get Aveligenth’s sharp tongue and mind going at the new target of her ire. Why? Because that’s no answer at all! In fact that’s avoiding the question altogether!

And there lies a Aveligenth’s greatest flaw. Her confidence in her intelligence and desire to be given a laundry list of reasons why she should not be privy to new or sensitive information. She is happy to accept her station and even happier to avoid stepping out of line if it’s for reasons that have been explained to her satisfaction. She will accept nothing else, it would be disrespectful to her intelligence to. She can understand! She can understand very well if only someone would explain to her and not brush her aside or worse insult her very impressive (per her own standards) brain. As quickly as Aveligenth’s anger bubbles up as steam bubbles does when her intelligence is insulted, so too does it disappear into the air when she’s been appeased. It would be unreasonable to hold tiny misunderstandings against those around her after all.

Positive Traits: Intelligent, Analytical, Confident
Negative Traits: Arrogant, Judgmental, Nosy

Adult Size: 22’
Physical Attributes: Long legs on a solid body, Aveligenth is a small green just under the average size for her color. Her elegance lies in the strength of her body, muscles well defined and proportionate for her size. Aveligenth’s tail makes up the majority of her length and her wings are just big enough to appear comical.

Additional Notes: Aveligenth’s skill in flight will never be in speed but rather in adapting to new situations as they arise and correcting herself on the fly. Aveligenth’s only consideration for chasers is if they can capture her attention beyond catching her body. Are they simply chasing because they have nothing better to do or do they have something to offer in conversation or daring to Aveligenth? That ideal of wanting something beyond a singular flight also informs her nonchalance at both male and female dragons chasing her. If they’re capable and meet her criteria then whyever would she deny them?

Why Me? Aveligenth saw a kindred soul in Shiammi, a fellow seeker of knowledge though Shiammi’s methods do need refining if you ask Aveligenth. She also needs someone to teach her that it’s okay to want things beyond being a doormat for others. Aveligenth has the confidence for them both in that regard. No one insults either of them and gets away with it, Aveligenth’s rebuke will be swift and merciless. For Shiammi’s part, her natural tendency to avoid conflict and arguments is something Aveligenth sorely needs to temper her especially when she feels she’s been insulted even if that’s hardly the case. Not everything is a slight against them and Shiammi will have to learn to stand up for herself when things are an insult to her and Aveligenth.
