Name: Chayrel
Age: 19
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Homosexual
Craft: N/A
Rank: Drudge / Miner
Location: High Reaches Weyr -- Previously Nabol Hold
Physical Description: Chayrel is a short man, standing only 5'4". He's thin, and as slight bones, which only adds to his small stature. Between missed meals, a malnourished upbringing, and hard physical labor, Chayrel looks as scrappy and scrawny as one might expect. His hair is short and most always disheveled; it's a dark brown and matches his natural dark skin. Due to his upbringing, Chayrel is quite strong -- he's had to lift and carry stones and minerals, as well as mining equipment, almost his entire life. His muscles are wiry, which leads some to underestimate him. Scars, cuts, and bruises are commonly found on him -- along with a crooked nose and a chipped front tooth. Whether these were from an accident or a fight, it's difficult to say, and Chayrel doesn't seem to correct anyone who assumes the latter.

When Chayrel does clean up, he cleans up fairly well. He has an attractive face when it's not covered in dirt or grime from the mines; and if he actually wore clothes that fit and tamed his hair, he might even be a bit of a looker. Still, he's not courtesan, and he knows it -- looks have never been important to him. One never wanted to be too attractive in Nabol, as some fates were worse than physical labor.

Personality: Chayrel is an aloof individual, but by no means shy. He often keeps his feelings close to the vest, and doesn't particularly like others who try to poke and pry into his affairs. He's a private man, and that hasn't changed since coming to the Weyr. Anyone who tries to force him to open up will only cause him to retreat further, or worse, snap and snarl until they leave him be. He's not one to be pushed, and not always the easiest sort to get along with. He's defensive, and that's because he's never been able to relax or trust in others. Everybody has an angle, and is out for their own - he's out for himself, and only himself, so why would anyone else be different? This doesn't make him many friends, but during the past Turns at High Reaches Weyr, he's begun to slowly relax, and even has a few fellow Candidates that he hangs out with regularly.

Chayrel will always take an advantage if he sees one; if there's some way for him to gain the upper hand, he'll take it, which can lead to trouble. He's been backed into a corner for so long that he tends to be reactive first, and his responses can come off as sharp or cutting to those who mean well. He doesn't try to be mean, but he's suspicious, and rather assumes the worst.

Despite his shortcomings, there's a surprising cleverness to Chayrel, and perhaps that's what kept him alive down in Nabol's mines. Had he been given proper instruction and care, he might very well have made something of his life, but unfortunately for the lad, such opportunities weren't present until recently. His literacy skills are poor, but he's been put in remedial studies to try to better catch him up. While he hates the judgement he assumes other Candidates throw his way, he also is secretly delighted by such an opportunity.

Chayrel is known to be loyal to those who manage to worm their way into his heart. While he wouldn't think twice about selling out someone if it benefited him, there are a small few that he'd take a fall for. While he doesn't say much about his family, any gang of friends he makes will find themselves with a loyal companion. Chayrel doesn't open up for many, but his trust and loyalty won't wave once won.

Chayrel does have a bit of envy. After growing up so poor and without, he can't help but yearn for nicer things. He tends to keep this part of him quiet, but he has a tendency to horde things, and stash away gifts or items or food so as not to be without. Even in the Weyr, where meals are provided, and clothing, he will steal extra meatrolls for later, or collect seemingly junk just in case he might need to barter it away later.

History: Chayrel was born to a small mining cothold on the outskirts of Nabol Hold. His family was poor, and not particularly well off; they owed debts to Lord Gansley and his men, especially as both of his parents had a gambling problem. His father was eventually sent to the mines to help pay back what was owed; but as his children aged, they were eventually sent to the mines A few of his sisters, and one of his brothers, were pretty enough to be sent to the Hold Proper -- what happened to them there Chayrel never found out, as he was sent to the mines.

Working Nabol's mines wasn't easy. The hours were long, the food poor, and the labor intense. Chayrel didn't like the work, but he tried to convince himself that for every jewel or mineral he found, that was one less mark owed. The more he collected, the sooner he and his siblings would be free to live their own lives. Unfortunately for Chayrel, the debts never quite seemed to go away completely.

By the time he was a teen, Chayrel had become just another cog in the mining machine. Any hope of freedom had long since been worked out of him. His home life had crumbled completely; his mother had disappeared, likely ran off, and his father and siblings been transferred to other mines. Still, he worked, hoping that one day he'd be free of the debt that forced them into such a fate. He made a few friends, fellow tunnelsnakes, and even had aspirations to one day save enough for a wher egg. If he could get his hands on one of them, new opportunities would await.

Unfortunately, Chayrel didn't get the opportunity to save up for a wher egg. Instead, around his 18th Turn, a sweep of dragons stopped at the mines. They hung around for half a day, and Chayrel didn't think much of it, until he was called over by the Overseer. It turned out he and a couple other mine-kids were thought to be suitable for Impression and all were officially offered a shot of freedom to return to the Weyr.

Chayrel didn't have to think twice. In a single, glorious moment his entire life changed. He didn't know what to expect at the Weyr, but if it meant he didn't have to keep mining, that was good enough for him. So it was, he was brought to High Reaches and began his training as a Candidate.

Weyrlife was surprisingly different. Not only was he given three hearty meals of food a day, but he had a bed with clean furs and stuffed pillows; the work he was required to do was mind-numbingly easy, and the hours light. Perhaps the biggest difficulty for Chayrel was his studies; he was close to illiterate, and struggled keeping up with the basic lessons. Thankfully, instead of throwing him out as he feared once discovered, he was simply assigned more lessons and tutors to help him learn how to better read and write.

Cheyrel's biggest fear is going back to the mines. He's not stupid, and isn't going to spurn this opportunity. Whether he Impresses or not, he wants to ensure he's smart enough, and clever enough, to be a valuable asset. If not to the Weyr than at least someone or something else. He'll work his way up tooth and nail if he must, but he will never go back to mining again if he can help it.
Other: He hates Nabol Hold, and rightfully so. He also doesn't know how to swim.
