ONE MYSTERY FAMILIAR

Welcome to Traversing the Tide, an obstacle course race that is run every year by aquatic soquili and their friends in a team-building competition! This year, the team we're rooting for is shown above - and while they're not focused much on competing with the other teams, the are focused on pushing themselves to be their best!

Your job? Help build their team into something they can believe in. They've been preparing for this for a long time - training individually, training together, and studying past obstacles. This obstacle course has been established for years, and though past obstacles have surely been embellished by legend, these contenders are doing their best to prepare for whatever faces them during their part of the course. While they do not know what the obstacles will be, they do know that the obstacle course is not a loop - they will need friends to help them through various environments.

Please remember the rules, too:

Quote:
Rules

  1. All event rules posted in the main hub apply!
  2. DO NOT DELETE YOUR POSTS. It's okay if you need to roll again because you made a mistake when inputting the number or type of dice - or forgot to roll completely. Just make a note in a new post (with a corrected roll) that you made a mistake in your previous post. Deleting your posts will result in disqualification.
  3. Do not change the soquili you picked for the day by editing your post after posting. This will result in disqualification.
  4. If you would like a chance at the participation raffle for this game, you must play during the first day.
  5. Proxies are allowed. However, you must indicate you are proxying in your form. If a user is found to have posted twice (with a correct dice roll) without indicating they are proxying, only the first post of the day will count.
  6. Be polite and respectful.
  7. Show good sportsmanship. Let's spread some good vibes!
  8. A win from this game will count toward your cap of one free soquili and one free familiar.
  9. Questions should be directed towards the host of the contest or sale you're participating in. (In this case, it's Mahogany Sunset OR Phail Ninja.)

Quote:
Regarding the mystery familiar:
If you have already won your freebie soquili, you are welcome to enter for the chance to win the mystery familiar. However, because it will be given away during the participation raffle, please keep in mind that a high score will not guarantee you this familiar prize.

A new obstacle will be posted each day. You will need to choose a different soquili to face each different obstacle - however, once you choose a soquili, you cannot use it again. If you choose the correct soquili for a day, you will receive 50 points toward your score. If you complete at least the first day and then miss a day, you will be disqualified from the game itself, but will have a ticket in the participation raffle.

Each day, you will need to post a dice roll and a short strategy response. In writing your strategy responses, please keep in mind breeds and rules regarding breed powers, as well as the general soquili canon (e.g. puffin boy, despite the bird he is based on, is unlikely to do well in the water for an extended period of time).

How to Play (and Win!): Each day, you will pick a soquili teammate to run the particular obstacle and roll a varying number of dice with a varying number of sides. Add these rolls together to get your score for the day; add each day to your total score as you go. The players with the three highest scores (i.e. the fastest time in completing the course) will receive a soquili based on listed preferences. The remaining soquili will be raffled off at the end of the game!

As a note, we will be double-checking math. If there's an issue, we'll let you know how to fix it!

In order to allow you some preparation for your team, we offer you the following tidbits:

Quote:
  • Day 1: Deep of sea and lost to land, still the darkness I have banned. I hold my own in the caves, where long ago I fought the waves.
  • Day 2: Warm of heart and cool of coat, you'll find me where the icebergs float. Bright of eye, thoughtful - rash? Whimsy and reality clash.
  • Day 3: Elegant, rumored to be of Atlantis - I capture all imaginations. Proud and kind and keen of mind, choose me to help the puzzle unwind.
  • Day 4: Mischievous and busy, I prefer cold climes. Bring the storms and bring the tides - count me along for the ride.
  • Day 5: Warmer waters I call home, where sun is sweet down to the bone. Gentle creature born to roam, I look odd (and yes, I know).
  • Day 6: Shallow depths and drifting fronds, I could almost prefer ponds. But still I'll swim the waters salt, for I love the sea (it's not my fault!).
  • Day 7: Find me in the tropics; I'll wait for you where turquoise waters and rolling surf wash ashore. Bury me deep in the cool sand, and let me feel the sun on my back.

In case we are not around to open the next day, below are the combinations of dice you will need to roll - and the rolls that will disqualify you from completing the obstacle course. Some obstacles will be more challenging than others! In the event that your roll means you are eliminated, never fear - as long as you complete the first day, you will receive a raffle ticket for the participation raffle!
Quote:
  • Day 1: Roll 3 100-sided dice. If any result in a number that is 5 or below, we regret to inform you that your journey has been cut short.
  • Day 2: Roll 6 20-sided dice. If any of your dice results in a 1, 2, 3, or 4, we regret to inform you that your journey has been cut short.
  • Day 3: Roll 4 12-sided dice. If any result in a 3, we regret to inform you that your journey has been cut short.
  • Day 4: Roll 4 100-sided dice. If any result in a number that is 10 or below, we regret to inform you that your journey has been cut short.
  • Day 5: Roll 4 4-sided dice. If you roll a 1, we regret to inform you that your journey has been cut short.
  • Day 6: Roll 2 8-sided dice. If you roll a 1, 2, or 3, we regret to inform you that your journey has been cut short.
  • Day 7: Roll 3 100-sided dice. There is no elimination this round - you've worked hard enough to get here!

Frequently Asked Questions

This will be updated as general questions are asked!

Q: Do I need to edit the form/response/etc. all into the same post with my rolls?
No! This is a personal choice. Just make sure you link to the post where your rolls are, as is requested by the form.

Q: Can I edit my preferences after my first post?
Yes! The thread will be locked at the end of the last day. You are welcome to edit your preferences up until that point. We will use your most recent post to determine what your preferences are, so make sure it is up to date!

Q: Should I use the form each day?
YES! Please do! Using the form each day will help us track everything efficiently and correctly, including which contenders you have used and where your rolls are. The purpose of the form is to accumulate the information you have input over the course of the game.

Q: What time does "the next day" start?
Days roll over at 12:01 AM Pacific Time! (3:01 AM ET / 8:01 AM BST)
PostPosted: Sat Jul 06, 2019 10:20 pm

Hi all! This game begins in roughly an hour and forty-five minutes. I will be asleep at the time it opens, so please see below for the prompt! (Please note that if you post before the official game start, your roll will not be counted and you will need to try again.)

Quote:
The obstacle course begins in the caves below the reef this year. Rife with danger, the caves are not for the clumsy or the inexperienced; the tides are known to suck bystanders in and spit them out again with little mercy. Choose your contender carefully, for this is just the beginning - and they must safely navigate the caves to move on. Roll 3 100-sided dice. If any result in a number that is 5 or below, we regret to inform you that your journey has been cut short. However, do not fear - you need not make it all the way to the end for the possibility of reward.

As a clue to help you choose your contender and gain their speed bonus, we offer you this clue: Deep of sea and lost to land, still the darkness I have banned. I hold my own in the caves, where long ago I fought the waves.

ALSO! Before I pass out, I feel it is only fair to mention that there IS a possibility of winning a freebie familiar in this game! It is a mystery familiar which will be distributed at the end in the participation raffle (so you will have a chance to pass).

If you have already won your freebie soquili, you are welcome to enter for the chance to win the familiar. However, because it will be given away during the participation raffle, please keep in mind that a high score will not guarantee you this familiar prize.

Who is this familiar, you ask? Why, it might just be our friendly commentator... We'll see you at the finish line (don't worry, we're expecting it will take you some time to get there). wink

Confidently zipping around, the Scarlet Tidestallion had little trouble navigating all the nooks and crannies of the caves; he was made for this environment. In an attempt to throw off others who may be behind, he intentionally made false turns, hoping they'd see him turn the 1st time, but not when he quickly switched directions. His special advantage was his, and he wasn't going to share it.

Scarlet Tidestallion quietly moved with ease throughout the caves. Its lights glowed brightly, illuminating any obstacles in the dark.

Day One: Scarlet Tidestallion

Score: 95 (but eliminated this round)

There was tension in the waters. Everyone could feel it. Just who of their team would be the first selected to challenge the first obstacle of the race. A name was called and the selected party swam forward. Red fins glistened and billowed around the Scarlet Tidestallion as he eyed the caves that made for the first obstacle. His heart raced and then settled into a calmer rhythm. He had nothing to fear. This was his environ, his home. He knew caves like these. At the right signal that indicated his start the stallion swam into the caves with no hesitation. He'd show his teammates that they could trust in him to do well.

Nooks and crannies there were galore and it would have been so easy to get lost. The current was a mild issue but not to be taken too lightly. Bursts of speed helped the stallion navigate the darkened tunnels. In one tricky spot he believed himself to be stuck but a powerful thrashing of his body provided the leverage to free himself.

Finally there seemed to be a lessening of darkness that permeated the murky waters. Was the end of the caves in sight?

(( I hope I can just have the form in my posts for each day. ))

This course was tricky - the caves were dark and cramped. But the light dangling from his head helped guide his way, pointing out openings and revealing dangerous crevices and sharp turns. Caves not unlike this were once his playground as a young guppy and while he had grown since then, he was still slippery and slender enough to squeeze through with ease.

There were smaller members of their Team who might have been able to deftly navigate the tight spaces of the caves, but the Scarlet Tidestallion had an advantage. Their esca glowed gently through the pitch black and fast-paced waters, and they raced through their section of the course with bright and predatory speed.

This? This was nothing. A pathetic excuse for an obstacle if you were to ask him. Of course, he had the advantage, and he knew it. He'd lived near here at one time in his life. Explored it far and wide. The caves had been a big draw to him. Their secrets like sirens, calling to him to seek and find. It was like he was made to wander about them. The glow he emitted from parts of his body were perfect to light his way. No need for lame luminescent shells or whatever.

How many times he had traversed these very caves, he could no longer say for sure. Lots of times. Too many times according to some. But all those times led him to this. He could do this in his sleep if he wanted. Darting to and fro, the stallion followed the twists and turns of the underwater caverns, taking shortcuts along the way to lessen his time and avoid the major hindrances. He felt lucky his team had chosen him or, rather, they should feel lucky they had. The scarlet tidestallion was confident he would win his portion of the race. No seaweed, false turns, or pitiful mazes would stop him.
