It hadn’t been Yun’s intention to miss the first day of classes… In fact, she’d been determined to make it in time. She’d been cast out of the celestial realm, her goddess had left her with her life and her abilities. Both were fragile right now, ghosts of their former glory, but Yunuen knew what she wanted to do with her life, with her abilities.
She wanted to make Proteus wholly himself again.
It was a selfish goal. Yun knew that Proteus would accept dying. She could end his suffering any time but… she… she couldn’t bear the thought of saying goodbye to him. Even if that made her a horrible girl; truly a disgraceful fallen angel, she was still going to pursue her goal with every bit of might she could muster. Which at the moment, it turned out, wasn’t a great deal. She’d pushed herself too hard, insisting they made it to Silverkeep and the Academy in time the day before. They’d gotten arranged into their dorm, and then… Yun slept through all of classes.
Gorgeous blue eyes opened slowly this late afternoon. ”Pro?” The angel called softly, blinking as she lifted her hands to look at them. She could still slightly see the wooden flooring through them, but her body was opaquer than when she’d fallen asleep. The dozen or so potted plants in the corner in which she’d been hovering, however, were rather deflated compared to their thriving state from last night.
”Are you there?” Unease settled over Yun, always feeling panicky with the idea that Proteus would just… disappear. Floating through the bedroom wall into the kitchen, relief washed over her to find him sitting at the little table. ”There you are.” She couldn’t help but smile at his handsome face, even if she felt internally nervous about what uhm… mood… he might be in. ”How are you feeling? Have you been awake long?” The angel didn’t yet realize what the time was. She drifted closer to Proteus, miming sitting near the table since she couldn’t actually interact with the chairs.

Proteus was no longer a Lunar knight. Had he ever been? Yes. There was no doubt there, except for the part of him that hated Lunar Knights and vowed to win the war against them. It was all so jumbled. It had taken, what felt like days to find his own thoughts, and even then, Proteus was only mostly sure they were his own thoughts. Thoughts of fighting for his moon deity, of running into battle with reckless ideas, saving lives, advancing the war, almost dying… several times… A beautiful Angel of death that he could make laugh, and looked forward to seeing with every brush with death. Those… those were his. The fact that the Angel of Death was with him when he awoke like this seemed to confirm it anyway.
All of this had been sorted out as Yunuen rushed them to the academy at Silverkeep. Something about not wanting to miss the first day of class. When the deity had shown up, Proteus had thought… maybe hoped… that she would repurpose their energy, but instead they had merely been banished. A crueler fate really, as he could no longer live out his purpose… or anyone else’s. He had been dying on a battle field of soldiers, all created for the same cause of winning the war. Now he was no longer allowed to battle, so what was his point?
They had arrived at the school, made it to their dorm, and Yun promptly crashed. Having really only seen her use her powers to absorb energy, or in his case give energy, Proteus wasn’t entirely sure what else she could do. He’d tried for a little sleep that night. But sleeping caused chaos in his mind as nightmares, fears, and memories swirled together. He was afraid if he let them mingle like that, they would never be separated. Good thing Soldiers didn’t require a lot of sleep.
Proteus had no idea when classes started, or really what or where they were, but seeing as Yun hadn’t woken up, he was pretty sure he wouldn’t find out today. He had wandered about their new dorm aimlessly most of the day, staring blankly at the walls and ceiling, trying to keep the memories at bay. Maybe if he just didn’t think, they wouldn’t make him act irrationally. Later in the evening Yun awoke calling for him, he didn’t really have the energy to respond. Proteus somehow knew this wasn’t him, but he wasn’t sure how to fix it. “I’ve been up most of the day, it’s nearly evening,” he informed her, idly stirring a cup of tea he’d let grow cold. His mind said he loved tea, his taste buds had declared otherwise, he kept trying though. Yun seemed more transparent than when they had arrived. How did she restore her energy without a battle field? “Do… do you eat?” he asked. Funny how little he knew about the Angel of Death whom his memories and usually his feeling, claimed he loved. Angel warriors were slightly more akin to humans, in regards to eating, but not all angels were created equal, maybe Yun didn’t need food.

There was no warmth to Proteus’s tone towards her. Yuen knew she should expect that and that she… didn’t deserve his smiles and warmth after what she’d done to him. Even still, even if she knew, and she’d been braced in case his greeting was volatile would have been so much worse, it still left her with a sinking feeling. Being immune to the gravity didn’t stop the fallen angel from feeling as if a black hole under her feet was holding her in place while draining her away. It was the memories of Pro’s gallant and teasing demeanor accompanied by kindly, cocky smiles that dragged her, like a weight tied to each of her wings.
The girl’s best effort to let her small smile be unwavering was broken as beautiful blue eyes, glimmering like the heavens, flickered towards the nearest time-telling device. It was truly such an hour!? Yuen’s form appeared to flicker for a moment, wings drooping as panic crossed her expression. ”That’s-“ It seemed like she wanted to say ‘impossible’, but clearly the time what it was. Arms crossing over herself, the girl looked down at the small table, whole demeanor reading as defeated. ”Perhaps I was being too ambitious…” Wisps of hair floated around like smoke, wrapping around the angel as she took in a deep breath. ”I am sorry Proteus. I pushed us here and then could not follow through.” The kindly man whom had offered them aid when they fell had not had qualms about caring for them another day or two, but she had just had to be stubborn about making a plan and trying to regain control despite being totally lost in this new realm, hadn’t she? Their human benefactor had pulled strings to get them enrolled late so they would have their own place, and meals but he’d also suggested they take a moment to acclimate.
How could she take a moment when it was her fault Proteus was like this?
Trying to rush hadn’t saved her any time. Sniffling before taking a centering breath, Yuen did her best to pull herself together and not let herself fall into the pit of wearing this small set back was a bad omen for continuous failure considering the track of their lives right now. ”Do I…?” Blinking, the girl stopped just short of repeating Pro’s whole sentence, just taking a moment to process it. Unraveling her arms from their tight hold around herself, Yuen looked through, slightly able to make out the wood grain of the table. ”Not anymore-“ She stopped short of saying she felt like a ghost. Troubling him with those thoughts wouldn’t do any good. ”Pro, do you remember the first time we met off the battlefield? Our goddess held a giant feast in celebration of a grand victory. We shared some pomegranate wine, the other soldiers looked aghast when I approached.” A soft laugh escaped the girl, fingers brushing past the wisps of her floating hair.
Maybe she shouldn’t bring up memories but sometimes she… just had this longing feeling to hear him say he knew her.
