█BACKGROUND ▬
The Yowlumne Tribe of Vacuo had first formed during the threat of the Great War, for purposes of trade and protection of valuable water and dust sources. Created from five Clans: The Yowlumne, The Sandford, The Rosenburg, The Maylis, and The Nuntis; consisting both faunus and humans alike, they were rather neutral until threatened to be removed from their territory due to water sources being as valuable as dust by outsiders not from Vacuo. As time passed and Grimm grew increasingly troublesome, the tribe would move their people to the undergrounds of desert caves; living a nomadic lifestyle until they would eventually come across and settle in an underground cave with a rare source of water to live by.
Ylva’s story begins sixteen springs ago, when a young wolf huntress caught the attention of a shy young wolf male. Though he was a silent and hardworking young man, he would uncharacteristically approach their tribe’s most successful young hunter, a beautiful young woman from the biggest family within. It is clear to say, he would fail the first three times he had tried to gain her affections through tasks of flashy means; for no gift or work of valor could get her to turn to any man. Finally, after feeling he had failed, he would honorably bow and promise to leave her be. Intriguing the young huntress, she would choose him for her next mission where they would bond for the first time and for many moons after. Forever mated.
Three winters after much trying, the couple would finally be blessed with a baby girl under the bright summer sun above ground; a wolf faunus like her parents. Proud to be blessed with a beautiful baby girl, Varg and Groa would present her to their tribe with pride, as every child is seen as precious and the births celebrated in the normally unforgiving desert. As she grew the young wolf would be raised with other younglings among her. Like their parents before them, the young children were taught the importance of water and how to use it. Though they were also brought up to learn other skills. Some learned the art of farming and using the water as such, others to hunt and gather what foods the desert provided, some creating armor and weapons of simple means, some learned to create things such as the buildings they lived in. Some, like herself, had taken on the role of a tailor, learning to sew clothes, curtains and even sand-sails.
When not learning to fight with weapons or sew different styles of cloth, the curious young wolf would soon find herself exploring with the other youths of her tribe. When she went deeper within the caverns they called home, she and her other companions took note of the luminescent life that dwelled deep within the dark caves, lighting their way. So intrigued was she that Ylva spent much of her time following and eventually growing inspired by the bio-luminescence. A young pup was she that as she felt her hackles raise and was blinded for the first time when she was picked up by one of their tribal elders…Needless to say that anytime afterwards she would be enveloped in a sienna light; she would learn that that would be the color of her semblance, and that it would take the shape of the blinding light she had come to admire.
As she would grow, she would learn the values of her tribe: the importance of water and why it must be protected, choosing a life skill to focus on, how each skill is important to have to work together and survive, how one comes of age, and how to use weapons to protect oneself and their fellow tribesman/woman. Her skill she would grow to love would be tailoring clothes and cloths for the homes of their tribespeople. As she grew older, she felt the pull towards the two-handed weapons that were spears and pole-arms. Her youth was rather peaceful with her parents, even if they left more often on hunts and other missions for the tribe.
By the time she was eight-springs-old (8-years-old) she would be allowed to travel with a few of the other kids and adults in a caravan to the closest city from their territory in order to sell their wares (things her tribespeople created) to outsides, or non-tribespeople and by materials they may need that they could not normally get from their environment. On market days, she would help sell things when not exploring the desert city. She would learn to love these days and as she started to sell what she made, she would earn her own money to save. The third day, they would travel back to their cavern home.
When she turned sixteen-springs, she would experience one of the the greatest tragedies in her life. Though she was accustomed to death, nothing could prepare her for the loss she would experience. The moon was new and the hunt in full-swing as her parents were sent out with four other people from their tribe. The party returned, but her parents were not with them, only a thin sheet of sail covered two forms on the cart they pulled. Her heart sank and she mourned for weeks (still does in secret) even after the funeral pyre. When a month passed, the pup (as elders called her) would be approached and spoken to. Given a mission she could not deny, she would agree to go and train, for she was not yet an adult in her tribe’s eyes.
Ylva would be sent to come-of-age in the kingdom of Vale, where her adventure would truly begin; and inherited her parents’ weapons to take with her. The young woman would not argue after they soundly reasoned with her that her estranged aunt and uncle lived in the rural farmland of the kingdom, and they would go as far as the port with her. So, the next morning after talking to her, she would say goodbye and pack to leave. She did not take much (weapons of her own and her parents, sewing supplies, clothes and fabric, mint leaves to chew, foods from her homeland (dates, figs, apples, jerky, and a cake or two)). Two elders would lead the wolf pup to the steps of the large ship before hugging her and saying their prayers and goodbyes, then she would be on her way to Vale. She would promise to return someday. Unable to contact her Aunt and Uncle through means like the scroll, they had sent a letter to them. So, she would hope it got there before she did. They had written and told her elders they would meet her in the city that the ships docked at before they would get to Vale’s main city. She just hoped they got there. Her journey over the seas would be a surprisingly calm one, despite all the dangers she had been told stories of. Spending a week on-board at least, but at least she got cleaned up before heading on dry land again.
The city they would dock at though, was not very comely in her thoughts. Once in the port city that was her first stop, she would head to a small cafe for something to eat. After sailing for days, she would get some bread and soup to put in her stomach. Keeping in her peripheral vision three men of interest that seemed to eye the wolf faunus. Pretending she didn’t see them, she paid for her meal and left the inn, the men had kept their distance as she would lead them to, and disappear in, an alleyway. Once she saw the two were confused by her disappearance, she would jump them from the roof and knock them out...but where is the third? No sooner had she pondered it that she felt a hard thwack to the back of the head and fell unconscious. When she woke, she was chained and moving...in a car? She felt a panic, and in doing so, her semblance reacted. The flash had so surprised her captors that they were sent into a collision. Disoriented and blinded, the men cursed and the wolf faunus (after opening her eyes) had found the chain had disconnected, she was free! And she wasted no time to escape. Out of the rubble and truck scraped, she spotted an older gentleman motioning for her to join him in the shop with some urgency. Untrusting, but with little else choice, she followed him. The door closed behind the frightened faunus. A low growl escaped the primitive girl, though he seemed to show signs of meaning no harm to her, so she would calm herself. Led to a small room, she would be met with two other faunus girls with chains much like her own. The shop owner had been hiding them it seemed. After a nice meal and getting cleaned up, he would allow them to stay and use the shop phone in exchange for chore-like services around the shop. A kind old man was he that allowed them to stay and not rat them out to the traders.
She would spend three days at the shop before her aunt and uncle arrived to pick her up and take her safely to their farm in rural Vale. Though she refused at first to ride in the train, after coaxing, she would get in but only if the window could be cracked which was done. Ylva would adamantly refuse her uncle’s offer to remove the shackle from her neck, for she did not trust his skills to be able to remove it. And it would serve as a reminder to herself that people were not always to be trusted; even if she wished it to not be so. Sleeping most of the train ride there, they would soon arrive and take a carriage to the farm. There at the farm, she would settle in the neglected barn they had, making it her own after asking to do so; it almost reminded her of the cave. The wolf faunus could never really call it home, but it might come close? She hoped so, even if her aunt and uncle had no memory of how tribal life was like...they were “modern” now. As time passed, she would spend her time alone if not doing chores or playing with their farm puppies whom she named: Vilesterk, Geni, Ess, and Hoymunn; especially the three-legged but stubborn girl (Vilesterk). Growing slowly attached to these pups, she would still feel something missing. In discussing with her aunt and uncle, and much debate, she would be enrolled in Beacon.

A year has passed since she had come to Beacon, still having a lot to learn of the customs and technology, she at least understands it a little better. Having met up with Peninnah that same year, she would advise the young woman to train to be the best huntress rather than protect the future Elder (she still had a lot she needed to do). Although she has a room with teammates she has taken time to know, she'd learn much more of her respectable teammate Xanthe and Rikku than their so-called leader Rowen(a). Their team had a fox before but she mattered not for she was soon gone. Ylva even learned of Xanthe's tribal celebration for the Hallow's Eve (Samhain). It was an experience to argue...points of ignorance when they got punished for the pyre. But, it was fun for sure. It would be the same year she would go on her very first mission as appointed by the Headmaster with other Vacuo natives (to the wolf's surprise). Having also be sent on a mission by the headmaster, meeting with others from Vacuo...including the once thought extinguished Reveley heir; burning a new flame of hope for bringing Vacuo back to the way it once was. But, Vacuo is not the wolf's only goal, in future, she hopes to annihilate the faction that had enslaved her people and so many others of their kingdoms; S.X.S.
