BACKGROUND

History ☾ ✦ When the great Oban war broke, the world was opened up to a new land. Damp, with a salty air, Matori was a curiosity for all those who braved the desert of Oba. It took no time at all for newcomers from all of the world to reach the shores and begin to interact with the newly freed slaves. Some showed uncertainty on both sides, and most were not clear how to act, and yet two found a way to make a connection.
A wandering Shifter warrior had made his way through Oba and to Matori, curious to see the slaves for himself. He was compassionate and understanding of the strangers, connecting them to his own race in so many ways. Their unique skin, their history with the oppression of Oba, and their general lose of self was something that he could connect to. That drive and compassion became a stubborn attempt to connect to the Matori on a different level.
It took months for the Shifter to really find someone who would see him. He understood their fear, and practiced patience during his journey. Eventually, on the coast, he discovered a young woman who was open to talk. For months, they spoke to one another about their experiences, their culture, and their histories. Both were willing to learn, but didn't realize when their curiosity turned into attraction. With so many connections, they eventually fell in love, and their love blessed them with a child.
This was one of the first children anyone had seen between the two races, and they were surprised to see such skin. It was Shifter in color, but didn't change with the moon. Instead, it housed markings of a Matori. Uncertain on what to do, they knew they needed to keep her in Matori where she would be safe from the world. And so, the Shifter finally agreed to settle on the small land near the ocean, traveling occasionally but always returning to his family.
The love the two held, the openness and understanding, helped to foster the young hybrid in a safe, protective embrace for her to grow and thrive. And that, is how Ondine came to be.
