Remembering the Past
Prompt 3

It has been seven long years since the Great Oban Invasion. It almost feels like a dream, considering all of the changes that have occurred in Tendaji since the great war. A new King sits on the Oban throne, and he has opened the boundaries of Oba and Matori. Many already are taking advantage of the open boarders to travel and explore. The world was expanding and changing all things to the massive war of the great nations.

Since the war, Tendaji took a stand against the extremist Alkidikes and won. They came together to show a new alliance that many could never dream of. Everything was settling, and now that there finally was peace everyone has begun to to take a moment and remember all that has come and gone.

How have the major wars and changes impacted your character these past few years? Are they bitter for their failures or happy about their success? Do they see a peaceful future to come or are they concerned about those who may be still holding grudges?

[Characters not part or even alive during the war can still respond to this prompt. Maybe they have a different way of understanding the war compared to those who were part of it, so feel free to explore those feelings and thoughts in your response]

Ondine, for once, was not dancing in the waves. She was getting older, and more curious of her surroundings, and as a result was often spending time observing her parents when they were together. Almost all of her life, she saw her mother, a beautiful matori woman with rich dark hair and eyes that matched Ondine's own. The woman was her life bringer, and was the one who helped raise her whenever her father traveled.

Her father traveled quite a bit when she was younger, not giving her any solid reasons outside of work. Ondine wasn't foolish, and with her pointed ears she could hear the soft words of her parents late at night. They spoke of danger, of how the borders still were not safe and how her father needed to travel home to help his family. Even after settling with a new life, he had to make the journey to make sure all was alright.

And then, the women with black eyes attacked.

Ondine watched her mother cry as her father marched off to war, hidden away and forced to pretend she had no clue. She was young, but even she knew that her father was in some sort of danger, because her mother had never cried like that. It was then she approached her mother and asked what war was, something that both had uncomfortably spoken about in detail as they waited for her father to return.

"Momma..." Ondine would whisper each night as she was tucked away, the moon looking down through her window as the sea breeze tickled her nose, "...when will daddy come home...?"

"Soon...soon..."

Every night, as they waited for her father to return home, Ondine softly asked when it would happen. And after she asked, she would always reach out with her small arms to get a hug from her mother, seemingly endless in length as she tried to give her mother as much comfort as she was receiving.

After what felt like years, the soldiers who decided to march to war returned to the villages. Word was faster than the pace of the men and women, so Ondine heard of their journey well before they appeared on the beaches. Tears and stories were shared, and both the hybrid child and her mother waited with baited breath for a dark skinned man to walk past the blue of the matori. When he finally arrived, both mother and daughter ran with tears in their eyes to welcome him home.

Ondine wasn't really aware of what exactly happened during those wars. She knew that there was damage and hatred, and that wars hurt people and their homes. The young child couldn't imagine what actually occurred with war, beside that it took families away who needed to protect their homes from those who wanted to hurt them. Ondine could understand that, as she was taught right from wrong. Her daddy was doing right, against those who wanted to do wrong.

Still, she wasn't too satisfied with her father being back all worn and exhausted, clearly having done so much to fight against the wrongs of the world. She wanted to help.

Ondine, for all of her youth, wanted to be like her daddy and help protect the world from the evils around it. She wanted to grow up strong, so that no child like her needed to cry in their sleep waiting for their parents to come home. She didn't want to see her mother lose sleep over a husband that might not come home. She was young, but she had a sense of justice, and knew she wanted to do what it took to make sure that what she felt wouldn't happen to anyone else.

The past was something she couldn't change, but as she grew older Ondine knew she needed to take it to heart. Her father was finally able to settle down in the sands, believing with the win over the dark eyed women that his home was finally safe from harm. He was finally able to spend time with the wife he found across the sands, and teach Ondine a bit more about her heritage and shifting skin.

Yes, she may not have been part of the war, or aware of exactly what was happening outside of the beaches she called home, but Ondine was by no means unaffected. She grew up seeing the pain, and the happiness, of her family, and she knew which one she preferred. So instead of learning how to fish, or to bake, Ondine was determined to learn how to fight so she could defend those she loved. That is what she learned from the wars of her past.
