Their gifts and mercy didn't kindle any warmth in Max. The Harbingers were dangerous, demanding, and unpredictable, but they had guns and he wanted to live. This spectacle was completely unnecessary. With access to so much electricity they could have assisted all four of the town's factions with power to spare, but they were running... a casino? He didn't even like to gamble.
Max let out a long-suffering sigh normally reserved for the things Monica used to say, then shuffled inside at the back of his group of prisoners. At least he could see again.

It was a casino, all right. He hadn't been inside very many of them in his time, but they were all obnoxious, reeking places that threatened to leech away money better spent on other things. But he was being accommodating, self-preserving, so he took a seat in silence, waving off the cocktail before pulling the lever in front of him. This was barely gambling. He didn't have to bet, and he could keep his newly-working eyes shut while he—
Max jolted upright when the whine of piercing, celebratory klaxons filled the air. He'd won, which he supposed was good, but that didn't mean he needed this fanfare.
"Shut up," he muttered, smacking the side of the machine. Two coins rolled out in return, and Max slipped them in with the others.

He pulled the lever again to try to get the noisy mess to stop. It didn't work. Max won a second time, more coins spilling into his palm as he rolled his eyes.

He tugged the lever at least six more useless times before he felt the insistent press of fingers against his forearm.
"Sir? Three pulls is the limit! Feel free to move on!" The attendant was as chipper as ever, almost plastic, and gave no indication that he was even aware of what was going on in the world beyond this place.
"Sure."
"Three pulls for everyone!" The man brandished the cocktail once more, and this time Max took it, downing the drink in two gulps. He almost slammed the empty glass back onto its tray, but thought better of it before he did, resting it gently in the ring of liquid it had left behind when he'd picked it up.
"Thanks."

[ Remain silent. ]
Quote:
Before you can talk again, an attendant, wearing the Casino suit and vest, comes over and grabs you and your entire chair. You are dragged into a separate room. There are two people in the room, in the same situation as you.
"Now," booms the announcer voice in the new room, a much smaller one, "these are the losing players from the last game. A Bunch of sore losers if you ask me. But we're giving you a chance to redeem one as their patron. If you manage to buy yourself out of the games, then you will also buy one of them out too. Now, which one will it be?"
[ The Young Lady ] She's quite a beautiful person, probably in her mid-twenties. She looks visibly terrified, her mouth is currently covered. She looks like she might have easily been someone's secretary or flight attendant.
Quote:
You pick the young lady. She begins to shriek muffled cries of relief, crying the entire time. They free her, and then turn to the other man in the room. The victim begins to shriek through his bandaged mouth. Two attendants grab him, and sever him from the chair. He thrashes, screams, but they overwhelm him. There is light blood dripping from a fresh wound as he is dragged away screaming to the next room.
As the door to the next room opens, you see a brief glimpse of the room beyond.
[ Don't question what is in the room ]
Quote:
You and the lady are brought into the next room where both of you are given a chance to clean yourselves in a mirrorless washroom with no windows at separate times. She has just enough time to thank you before she is dragged away. You are alone again as you are escorted down the hallway. A single door lies in front of you. The door opens.

He should have known better. Drinking anything at all in this place had been a mistake, and it seemed his punishment for downing cheap liquor out of spite was to be strapped to a chair and tossed around the back rooms of the casino like a doll. Max groggily accepted his fate, refusing to speak even when he was prompted to save another survivor, an innocent person. He sat in silence, the attendants growing increasingly growly and frustrated until he eventually jerked his chin toward the woman. What happened next was predictable enough, but that didn't make it any easier to watch. So he didn't. Max closed his eyes as the man was dragged away, as he was dragged away himself, and when he opened them again, he and the woman were free and the man was gone.
He washed up after she did, accepted her thanks without comment, and hefted his pouch of coins as it was handed back to him. It was time to get gambling. Gambling. He sighed.
