There were few people Mr. Nordskov worked well with. Not because he didn't work well with others, or understand the value of teamwork, but because he was such a solitary old man. He preferred working alone, there was no pressure, no requirement to talk, no misjudging the severity of his face. The young man he was now travelling with was one of those, who understood doing what needed to be done without a lot of extra fuss. On any average day he would be perfectly fine sharing his silent company with the young man.
However, there would have been no mistaking the unimpressed expression on his face to find himself acting as seeing eye dog on their current outing. He couldn't let the kid wander about blindly all over everything. Couldn't let the one tolerable person he had met fall into a hole and get eaten by monsters.
"Enemy coming up," he grunted, readying his own makeshift weapon, a sturdy old board. Even though his cracked ribs pained him something fierce, he could still swing a board hard enough to send that thing packing.

Micah held off panic by sheer force of irritability; if he was annoyed about his lack of sight, he wasn't freaking out about it. Of all the people he could have run into, he'd been grateful to hear Mr. Nordskov's voice. The old man was competent and practical, and Micah was determined to be as useful as he could without the use of his eyes.
He'd picked up a piece of rubble from the piles scattered around, and at the old man's terse warning, he took a firmer grip on it, turning his head from side to side to listen for the shuffling and groaning of the incoming infected. "Right," he replied, and just to confirm the direction he'd heard it, "At three o'clock?"

Curse those damn explosions, he would end up speaking more in one day than all week at this rate.
"Yeah," he growled. "Just take a swing, maybe you'll hit it."
Heh. Either the kid would be of some help despite his blind state, or Mr. Nordskov would get some entertainment out of it while he beat up this creature. He let the piece of wood thunk hollowly off it's head, glad at least the other couldn't see the wince on his face. Busting up some ribs made every action hurt.

Micah grunted in assent, and listened; the squishy, thumping sound of Mr. Nordskov hitting the zombie gave him a good idea of where the thing was. He moved forward in an odd, rapid shuffle, hoping not to trip, and swung his chunk of concrete at the place where he thought he'd heard the Infected.
It hit something squishy with a gratifyingly solid thunk, and the lack of an outcry reassured him that he had, in fact, hit the zombie and not the other man. He took a long step backwards to get out of the way, but the creature's claws smacked into his side, making him wince.

Nice hit. Mr. Nordskov was at least impressed in a wry fashion, the young man had blindly struck at least as hard as his own pain-hampered attack. It was a good, solid, connect.
The monster lashed out, raking his arm, but he swung again. There was definitely something about this whole teamwork thing, the creature barely knew which one of them to go after. John was learning a valuable lesson. Even a blind guy could be a good distraction.

Another heavy, wet thump. It sounded like the zombie had moved a little bit forward. Micah stepped in to take another swing at it, but his foot caught on something he couldn't see and he staggered, his piece of rubble swinging wide and hitting nothing but air. He cursed under his breath and got a stinking fist to the shoulder for his troubles.

"Back up kid, keep your feet under you," Mr. Nordskov grumbled, giving the monster another smack to distract it from the young man. At least, he tried to give it another smack, his broken ribs twinged with the swing, and the board fell hollowly, uselessly, against the creature's arm.
It gave him a backhand of it's own, a wheeling blow that felt worse than it was.

Micah got his balance again, steadying himself on what felt like a stop sign pole. He turned his head again, trying to pinpoint where the zombie's shuffling was coming from, but the shuffling and thumping were confusing, and he stepped forward, then turned to the side, not sure where to aim. While he was trying to figure it out, the creature got in a hit to his shoulder.

"Maybe you should run in circles. Distract it." Mr. Nordskov said, a hint of amusement in his voice. It was perhaps the first time he had not sounded purely grumpy, sarcastic, or scornful. Well, perhaps it was a little sarcastic.
How were the two of them getting knocked around so hard trying to corner just one enemy? Seriously, he needed to find a good rifle.

Micah growled, a short, cut-off sound, and oriented himself on the sound of the zombie getting thwacked again. This time he grabbed for the creature, ignoring the hit that he got in return, and put his frustration with his blindness and ineffectiveness into the swing he directed at the spot where its head should be.
The piece of rubble connected, and he felt the zombie stagger and become deadweight, sliding out of his grip. He let go and asked dryly, "Did I distract it enough, sir?"

"Heh, y'sure did," came the old man's gruff reply, perhaps the smile would be evident in his tone if not visible to his companion. That was a good smack, and John was certainly one to appreciate the 'get 'er done' attitude.
He crouched over the slumped figure, looking to see if it had anything useful on it. "Hmm... what have we got here..."

Micah grinned, hearing the note of faint approval and nodding in response. It was close enough to praise. He crouched down and gingerly felt at the corpse, grimacing at the texture under his hands. There was something else - a stiff piece of paper, about the size of a playing card. He pulled it loose and held it up. "This anything?" he asked.

"Not unless you're gonna collect the rest of the deck," Mr. Nordskov replied. He started walking, trusting the younger man to follow. "Let's make it back in one piece, eh?"
It was perhaps a sign of respect that the old man avoided rocky terrain on the way back.

It was definitely a card, then. Micah shrugged and put it in his shirt pocket, fumbling to button the flap over it to make sure it wouldn't fall out. "I'll try," he answered, and followed a short distance behind, carefully following Mr. Nordskov's footsteps.
