Freshmen Quest: Building Maintenance In light of the recent surprise infected mob, Corey has created a new duty for the University Faction: Building Maintenance. The goal of this quest is to patch up holes and create traps in an effort to protect the overall group.
Quest Notes - This quest can not be completed solo. There must be two or more people in your group. - Each person must do all the steps and dice rolls. No tag teaming! - Your group is given a rather heavy bag of equipment. It's clearly all items from the maintenance shed, and includes such items as a hammer, some nails, a screwdriver set, some fishing line, a measuring tape, etc. Building maintenance supplies. These do NOT count as materials, just aids to help you ICly. - This requires some imagination - after all, there is a very real chance you might be clogging a broken window with a bucket! - No new people may join an open Building Maintenance Thread once the group moves on to step 2.
Step One - Material Gathering - Before you can begin the maintenance, you must gather some materials! - Roll a 5d12 in one post, and match your result to the materials below:
1: You break a couple desks, and now have TWO pieces of wood! (+2 Materials) 2: You find…a bucket? Well, alright. (+1 Material) 3: There are a bunch of backpacks lying around. Three of them. Might as well bring them along. (+3 Materials) 4: You lucky deviant! You found the Janitor's cart. It only has a mop, some cleaning supplies (a bottle of windex, some bleach, and 4 unused garbage bags), and precisely three towels. One of the towels is a grease rag though, at least the other two are clean. (+10 Materials) 5: WILD CARD - You can find ONE item of your choice. It can be anything you think you would find in a university setting. Keep in mind that everyone has had a month to scavenge, so the pickings are slim! (+1 Material) 6: You manage to pry down a dry erase board. It's got to be good for something. (+1 Material) 7: You find a projector. Hurray? (+1 Material) 8: WILD CARD - You can find TWO items of your choice. It can be anything you think you would find in a university setting. Keep in mind that everyone has had a month to scavenge, so the pickings are slim! (+2 Materials) 9: There are a bunch of bells in a box. Three of them. We're not sure why. But there they are. (+3 Materials) 10: You find a bottle of alka-seltzer near a bottle of coke… (+1 Material) 11: WILD CARD - You can find ONE item of your choice. It can be anything you think you would find in a university setting. Keep in mind that everyone has had a month to scavenge, so the pickings are slim! (+1 Material) 12: You find a stack of boring looking books. Three of them. Might as well put them to some use. (+3 Materials)
- Pool your resources. Make a master list of what was found, including how many of them there are. These will be the materials you get to work with as a group! - Continue on to Step Two.
Step One-Point-Five: Choose post order - This can be done however you want! You must go in post order for step two.
Step Two - Makeshift Maintenance - Hurray, you have materials! Now to put them to use. - Each person in the group rolls a 1d10 in turn, until there are no materials left to use. Pooled materials will be used on a first chosen-first used basis. - Match your rolls to the problems below, and do your best to fix them using the pooled materials your group rolled earlier! This means you get to be a little creative with how some of the items are used. - Once a material is used, it can not be used a second time. Once it's used, it's gone!
1: You find a small hole in the wall. (Requires 1 material to fix) 2: WILD CARD - You find something to fix. What it is, is your choice. (Requires 2 materials to fix) 3: There is a slightly broken window. (Requires 1 material to fix) 4: This window is very broken. (Requires 2 materials to fix) 5: WILD CARD - You find something to fix. What it is, is your choice. (Requires 1 material to fix) 6: Some of the flooring is compromised, and has a foot-shaped hole in it. (Requires 1 material to fix) 7: There is a large hole in the wall. (Requires 2 materials to fix) 8: This floor is a mess. A whole person could fit down there (Requires 4 materials to fix) 9: WILD CARD - You find something to fix. What it is, is your choice. (Requires 1 material to fix) 10: One of the vents is open. It's a large vent. Someone could fit through it, unless you fix it. (Requires 2 material to fix)
- If you don't have enough items to finish the last fix - don't worry about it. Really. As long as all your materials are gone, this quest is considered complete!
Course Credits - If you and your team mates complete this quest - meaning everyone has completed their dice rolls and has written at least 400 words - you all receive FIVE course credits. - This is all or nothing - meaning all of you have to meet the criteria to get the credits. If one person doesn't finish this quest/word count, nobody gets it! - Don't forget to link completed quests and earned credits in your journal!

"Hey, looks like you're stuck with me. I'm Dr. Falls, but I guess you can call me Harvard, end of the world and all." It had become his normal way of introducing himself, a pessimistic phrase that summed up his views on everything. He fumbled in his pocket for a cigarette and lit it with one of his remaining matches. Harvard took a long drag while looking at Cecil, trying to size him up.
"Well, sooner started is sooner done. Let's get going." He cracked his shoulder and began to move. "******** manual labor," he muttered, breathing out a ring of smoke.
Turning to his companion for the day Cecil smiled. "It's a pleasure, Harvard. I'm Cecil." He reached out a hand to shake but wasn't entirely sure if Harvard would be interested since he seemed keen on getting his nicotine fix. He had spotted the man in the dorms but wasn't sure if they had really had a conversation until now.
When Harvard made mention that they should get going Cecil gave a quick nod. "Sure, I'm right behind you." He tried to keep his strides short as he fell in step so that he didn't speed ahead of his companion on their journey to repair the building. Eyes watchful for danger or anything that could be made useful Cecil gave pause when he looked over some of the damage that needed repaired. "This is going to take some work. Do you have any ideas on where to look for supplies?"

Belatedly, he stuck out his hand for a shake. "Hey, Cecil - like Nightvale, yeah? Supplies we can probably find about anywhere - let's try the administrative offices first." There was bound to be various things here and there. Harvard creaked open the door, grateful that ******** rats didn't run out, or infected, or worse.
"Do I know you from somewhere? You look kind of familiar." He grabbed two buckets and...a projector because why not.

"Nightvale? That's the radio show, yeah?" Cecil had heard people speak about it a time or two when he had introduced himself but he had yet to investigate what it was about. Maybe he should have but now he was uncertain if he would get the opportunity.
"Administrative Offices sound good." Cecil agreed, following Harvard on their path through the university. He too was glad when the door was opened without a surprise behind it.
"I'm pretty sure I've spotted you around the dorms? Otherwise you might have seen me running around like a lost fool when school was in session. I was interning but the Professor I was under liked to send me on a wild goose chase for things no one had." He smiled a bit remembering. What would he give for things to be as they were.
Seeing Harvard pick up a few things Cecil began to scout around for anything of use. Anything of real value had been stolen...which probably explained why there were several projectors just laying around. He took up a second one and eyed the bottle of coke and alka-seltzer sitting nearby. Who knew maybe it would be useful as well.
"Did you work here at the school as well?"

"I teach... well, taught linguistic anthropology. Before everything went to ********' s**t, that is. What professor were you under - there are a couple who will do that?" ******** idiots, the ones that did that. It was their duty as professors to foster learning or even BEAT it into their students brains. The corners of his mouth turned down and he snubbed out his cigarette on the wall, putting the butt back in his pocket. It was good for another light, later.
He looked over his and Cecil's stash with a critical eye. "You think we're good to go start finding stuff to repair?"
"Professor Wellington in the Anatomy and Physiology department. He was a good guy, little eccentric perhaps, but I enjoyed working with him." And he also had no idea what became of the Professor as with most of the people he cared about. Hopefully he was somewhere safe.
Cecil could tell Harvard was a man that would likely tell you how it was, no sugar coating, just the cold hard truth. He could admire that in a person even if it could be unsettling at times.
"I think we will know best once we get started and know what we are repairing." He looked over their supplies and then toward the damage that needed sorting out. The large vent was the first thing he saw and looking over his supplies he hefted up the projector and used it to brace the dry erase board up against it. It wasn't the best but it would do.

"Oh, I know him - always did like hazing his interns. At least you didn't have Aimes. He liked to use his interns to run personal errands only. You'd have been doing his grocery shopping every week. Abuse of power." Harvard shook his head in disapproval. Students and interns were to be used (mostly) appropriately. And by mostly, Harvard meant that it was alright to lead them on if they came on to him first, then ultimately decline their offer. It was a game of sorts.
He stepped forward and and promptly stuck his foot through the floor. Oh, great, just ******** peachy. With a grunt, he wrenched his foot free. "Nice use of the board," he said absently as he began to kick the hole wider. Methodically and precisely, Harvard kicked at the boards until the hole was large enough. Then, he upended the bucket, and shoved it into the hole. It wouldn't hold indefinitely, but it would do for now.

6: Some of the flooring is compromised, and has a foot-shaped hole in it. (Requires 1 material to fix)
Cecil chuckled lightly at the information, "I don't know that I would have minded. I guess you can still get something out of the experience whether its knowledge or exercise would have remained to be seen."
Making sure the projector was holding the board well in place Cecil turned to Harvard with a smile. "Thanks, its not exactly easy when pickings for material are slim. I'm not sure these projectors have seen any use until now though." He watched Harvard's foot nearly fall through the floor and cringed. "You alright?" From the look of it, he hadn't been hurt considering he worked the hole a bit wider to fit a bucket into it but Cecil wanted to be sure.
Walking only a bit further Cecil had to stop mid-stride to avoid the risk of falling through the hole he found. "Woah....the floor in this area is a little sketchy." Looking back through their supplies Cecil took up the cork board he had found on the wall that had once held memos and lists of things that needed done or supplies that needed ordered. It's purpose was very different now as he placed it over the hole and tried to pick through the other supplies to help hold it in place. It covered the hole okay but it wasn't exactly heavy or sturdy. Some books helped hold down each side. Or at least three of the sides. "Maybe we should just avoid this" He gestured to the floor in his area. "Otherwise we might go down a level and not by choice."

"Eh, still never sat right with me." For all his entertaining of his interns and T.A.'s propositions, he had never taken advantage of them. Harvard played the game and left right before payoff - it was enough. Enough for him to both have fun and stay within acceptable behaviors.
He crouched down to look at the floor. "Yeah, it's falling to s**t. I wonder if this place is going to last long enough." Long enough for what - he did not say. Grumbling, he took a couple of rags and stuffed them into a hall in the wall.

"I'm not sure if it will last or not." Cecil admitted looking over the flooring. "Hopefully we won't have to be here much longer." It was a big hope but one that Cecil would cling to.
Moving a bit further Cecil found a small portion of the wall that had been exposed. It wasn't a big hole but there was a number of exposed wires that kept spitting sparks now and again. In the name of safety, what little safety he could at least preserve in a place like this, he carefully fed the exposed ends into the coke bottle and shoved them back into the wall. At least it might not catch anything on fire that way and bring the whole place down.

"You know what I think - I think the entire building may fall down before the infected get us. Death by building." Harvard lacklusterly shoved yet another rag in a tiny hole.

"Delaying the inevitable, don't you think?" He huffed a little and scratched his beard. "Do you wonder about the people in other cities?" Harvard leaned a book against a hole in the wall, deciding that How to Be a Pope: What to Do and Where to Go Once You're in the Vatican (by Piers Marchant) was not a book that would be missed. The gold tooling on the cover was appealing, at least. It glinted dully against the wall.
"How many more supplies have we?"

"Perhaps but any delay might help." Cecil smiled, though that smile waned with Harvard's next question. It was hard not to wonder about other cities and how people were fairing or if there were survivors beyond the few factions in this city. "I do...quite often." He said quietly. There was no need to ask if Harvard thought there were survivors in the city beyond those they knew of. It was a painful subject he didn't need to pick at so instead he looked to the supplies.
"I think we are mostly down to the cart you found." Another hole, another rag. That seemed to be the thing.
