The villagers were becoming impressed with TK’s and Puella’s work. At least, he assumed so when they immediately thrust another task upon the pair. With a Cheshire smile gleaming beneath their cloak, one of the villagers gave them a spit and told them to search for a turkey and prepare some steaks.
Eyebrows knitted together, the skeleton stared at the spit. That was all? Did that mean the villagers expected them to find a turkey, hunt it, and then skin and cook it themselves? When he looked up they were all alone.
It seemed so.
He scratched his cheek before looking down at Puella. “I think I saw some turkeys near the edge of the village when we were returning from the mountain.”

Turkey steak? That was a new one indeed. Puella wrinkled her nose, but said, "I'll follow you this time, then." If he knew where the turkeys were then that was the right thing to do. It had nothing to do with wanting to come second if they spotted any more snakes or sand whales on the way. Puella had certainly seen enough of those for this journey! "Maybe we can eat the extra ones," she said with a note of hope in her voice as the pair began their walk. And with any luck these turkeys were easier to take down than a sand whale!

“I have no qualms with that.” He briefly looked around, trying to find an efficient pathway to the outskirts of the village. TK spotted a handful of familiar faces wandering around the town as they headed for the borders. It looked like the other students were also performing tasks for the villagers, and the boil couldn’t help but muse about all of these free labor the villagers were gaining. Why exactly did they need all of this help, though? They weren’t in that much of a hurry to gather supplies, were they?
He hummed thoughtfully before moving his gaze back to the main pathway. Hands reached out to brush away a few stray tree branches out of his face, the leaves fluttering to the ground before they were crushed beneath his shoes. TK looked down then stepped with extra caution. “Try to keep sounds to a minimum. I would prefer not to startle the turkeys.” Why did that sound so odd once it fell out of his mouth?
He bent down, trying to hide behind the trees and bushes as he looked around for a flock of turkeys to target. After a few minutes of slowly crawling around the forest, TK spotted a small group of the birds and half-nodded his head toward them. He tried to walk behind them as quietly as possible before lunging forward to try and spear one with the spit.

Puella herself dashed forward to strike at a turkey with her own spit. The bird was pretty big, which meant the target was easy to hit. Unfortunately it also meant the bird itself was able to catch Puella as she stepped forward, and she quickly darted out of the way before it could hit her again. At least this thing wasn't as big as a sand whale - or as those snakes from earlier! Then again, if they could somehow take one of those down, they'd have enough food for the whole village. That'd probably require a lot more helpers, though - or just lots of ballistae, maybe? Or maybe cooperative villagers. Well, Puella and TK weren't gonna get any of those things any time soon. turkey 2 HP: 8/10 puella hp: 28/30

The bird squawked and angrily pecked his hand in retaliation. TK recoiled from the pain, but gritted his teeth to shove down the shocks shooting up his bones and dove back in to attack the turkey again. Unlike the previous swing, this one was a hard, merciless stab that managed to cleanly pierce the creature’s side.
It released an especially loud shriek at the attack and fought back with more vigor, but the attack was nothing compared to TK’s. He hummed as he stepped back to avoid the brunt of the turkey’s beak. Perhaps one more hit would do the trick and he would be able to roast this bird.

"Woah!" Puella began, watching as TK shoved his spit cleanly into the bird's middle. Now that was an impressive move. Puella watched for a bit before remembering that she'd already enraged a bird, and its swift wing caught her mercilessly on the arm. Ouch! Well, that was no matter. She refocused, attempting to do just what TK had done...and came out, well, pretty close. An uncharacteristically vicious grin dominated her face as she struck the bird with the spit again. How was that for impressive, TK? His bird looked a little worse for wear than Puella's did, but it didn't matter. They were almost ready to cook! turkey 2 HP: 2/10 puella hp: 26/30

There was no time—well, given the turkey’s current state of affairs there probably was—for TK to check on the status of Puella’s turkey. His own was nearly finished, and TK wanted to land the killing blow before it managed to squawk out of his grasp and disappear, causing him to start the chore from scratch.
It attempted to bounce away from him, but TK’s glowing eyes narrowed and he swiftly pushed his spit forward again for another clean stab. The bird stilled suddenly, and as he pulled the weapon out the turkey fell over with a solid thud. He finally looked over to check on Puella's status.

Puella was doing a lot better than her turkey was, but that wasn't really saying much. Still, she should have known better than to pause to clap politely as she observed that TK was now done with his turkey. She turned to focus on hers again when it took its sharp beak and drove it into her shin. Whoops! She definitely shouldn't be forgetting to watch her knees at a time like this. She waved her spit uselessly at it but it didn't seem to be backing down, and Puella pouted slightly at the gesture. It was all right, though! She could keep going! turkey 2 HP: 2/10 puella hp: 24/30

He kind of just. Stood by. At one point the turkey lashed out at him for killing its fallen brethren.

Okay, so clearly Puella had to be a little more strategic about this. Humming, she waited until the turkey struck again to dive forward and, uh, stick the spit in its eye. It was a little gruesome-looking now, but it only twitched a couple times more before falling still. "I hope we can care nice-looking turkeys out of these," Puella said, a little worried. "I guess now we know why we need to carry knives everywhere, though!" She picked up the still-warm corpse to examine it. "At least we didn't have to fight giant snakes this time," she commented. turkey 2 HP: 0/10 puella hp: 22/30

“They each have their pros and cons, I think,” he answered mildly as he stabbed his turkey and held it up. Now all they had to do was cook it into a steak.
But what was the point of making the steak now? Wouldn’t it be better to just leave it raw and cook it when you really need it? Or did the villagers actually need a ton of steak right now, in which case what was all of the steak for—
And before he knew it, he was pulling out a very overcooked steak. TK just said nothing and discarded it. Ahem.

"Well, I guess the whale was cleaner, if you'd call sand cleaner than blood and guts," Puella mused. She wasn't sure, though: even though they were close up, blood wasn't something she minded. Even if it meant getting blood on her very expensive clothing. Puella turned to watch TK cook for a bit, eyes widening as he progressed, but she soon got to skinning and carving her steak. A strong smell made her head perk up, though. That was...well...a lot of smoke. She definitely didn't want that much char on her own turkey! ...actually, the villagers would be fine cooking it themselves, right? She didn't want to do what TK had just done and cause a catastrophe. All she had to do was carry the raw steak back to the village. No, let Puella make it clearer: as they walked back to the village. Well, it was slimy - as poultry always was - but at least it'd be dible after the villagers cooked it. Evading responsibility: check! turkey 2 HP: 0/10 puella hp: 22/30
