It wasn't long before they actually ran into more villagers, though. They were crowded on a pier glaring balefully over at Puella and TK as they passed. But...hey, fishermen! Maybe they'd trade? Puella glanced nervously at them, and then with some amount of gathered resolve, marched over, retrieving the fin from her backpack as she did so. Geez, she'd just put it away!
"Hey," she started, smiling, because it wouldn't hurt to look friendly. "Do you know what we might be able to um...get for this?"
To Puella's surprise, the villager actually turned to face her. "You fish?" he asked gruffly.
Um. The answer was no - not technically. Perhaps she had fished when she was a spider back on the human world, or something, but it wasn't anything that Puella had a conscious memory of. "I-I can learn!" she said, cheerfully. "And so can he," she added, gesturing at TK. She flashed him a grin.
"Well, Missy, fish oil is pretty valuable in village things." What was that supposed to mean? "If you can fish up something nice we wouldn't be opposed to a little...trade."
Um...she could do that, perhaps. She looked consideringly over at TK. "I'd certainly be willing to try."
The villager glared back. At least he'd talked to her!

After exploring the area for a while longer, the two of them discovered more villagers by the pier. He could not understand why they were giving them looks. But it seemed an idea had struck Puella, considering she decided to walk over to the small crowd and hand over one of their gathered whale fins. “Hmmm.” TK hummed thoughtfully as she realized what she was hoping to accomplish. Hopefully it would work, he mused as he trailed behind her.
He wasn’t sure what he thought about learning to fish, but gathering knowledge was always a plus for him. How hard could fishing be, right? As the ghoul looked to him hopefully, TK slowly nodded his head in agreement. Perhaps this would open the gateway to further trade between them and the village, especially a trade of information. If there was a way to leave the village even quicker, then he would gladly take the chance.
“I suppose we have to gather our supplies first then?” He looked curiously between Puella and the villagers. A rod. Bait. What else?

There looked to be a box of bait, but as Puella reached hesitantly for it the villager shoved his hands on it rather alarmingly quickly. "You need a rod first - preferably made of whale fin," he added, eyeing the one she'd had in hand.
Oh. That was why he'd brought it up. Well, why not give it a whirl? She hadn't expected this task to be quite so difficult, but then again, after fighting a sand whale, she shouldn't be surprised. At least this one had significantly less danger to their lives. She thought. Probably. Wait, whale fin wasn't secretly acidic, right?
No, she and TK had just been carrying theirs around.
She shook herself out of her reverie, noticing that the villager guy had just begun taking out the molds and other tools for making the rod itself. "Thanks," she said, getting started, because there wasn't anything else to do until their bus got moving, and she was pretty sure she'd notice when that happened - by the rush of creeple headed to watch, if nothing else. "So - I'm guessing you've never done this before, either, TK?"

TK had initially expected to be lent a generic fishing rod rather than create his own, but if the villager insisted he supposed it could not be helped. Maybe he could keep the rod and take it home, occasionally go out to the lake at school and try to fish something out of the waters—assuming the villagers let him keep it. Grabbing it away from them after they finished fishing was also an unfortunate possibility.
For sure he had never read how to make fishing rods, but how difficult could it be? TK narrowed his eyes as the villager began taking out molds. How exactly was this process going to work…? “Unfortunately not,” he answered eventually. Briefly, he looked at Puella before back to the mold and tools, then eventually at his own whale fin. He secretly kind of liked having the fin, but sacrifices had to be made. When the villager stretched out a hand with his palm wide open, TK pursed his lips and handed over the fin.
“How long will this take?”
“Not very long. It’s very simple.” As the villager answered and began to work, TK hummed thoughtfully. Was that so?

Oh - oh, the villager could make a rod. Puella watched him work with some nervousness, but it actually didn't take an exceptional amount of time compared to...compared to fighting whales. And there was no annoying sand, too! That was pretty great.
When he neared completion, though, he finally gestured at the box of bait sitting next to him. Oooh! Puella reached in eagerly, but was surprised to find that - um. Was there only one thing in there? It felt...really big, for some reason. Grunting, she began to pull, and finally whatever was inside came free with a -
How had that fit in there? Having eight eyes hadn't helped Puella see this coming at all. "I-it's me!" she said, startled, and then corrected herself when she noticed the villager looking at her. "I mean, um...wow. I didn't expect this?" Her voice squeaked higher at the end of the sentence. It had to be over six feet tall, which was definitely taller than Puella herself, let alone Puella in her natural form.
Would the fishing rod be able to hold this...?

Making the rod appeared quick and simple, but was it really a quality tool? Maybe there was something about the whale fin that made it vastly superior despite the dubious creation process. TK reached for one of the rods and held it curiously in one of his scrawny hands while Puella reached down to pull out her bait. He looked up curiously when the ghoul struggled. What exactly was in that container? Was she going to pull out something unusual—
He pulled the stiffest straight-face he’d ever made when she hauled out a gigantic spider. Out of dying curiosity he took a step forward to compare heights, and it appeared they were nearly equal. TK raised an eyebrow at the so-called bait. She was supposed to fish that? Was he supposed to fish with that? The boil reached out for his own bait and was relieved (but also vaguely disappointed) to take out a regular worm. “Okay.”

It took Puella a while to get the spider attached to the rod in a way that meant it didn't immediately, well, fall off due to gravity. It took her longer to throw the bait into the water, but she managed eventually, although she had to throw all her weight into it.
Fortunately for Puella, though, the sheer size of her bait mean that someone took notice of it near immediately. It took a long while before the drag on the other end of the rod was low enough that she was able to reel it in, though, but when she had the fish it was gloriously colorful and beautiful to boot. "Um," she began, glancing over at the villagers, who'd for some reason stayed to watch them.
She was surprised to be greeted with a fistful of bills. And a key...thing.

He watched with amusement as Puella tried to figure out how to properly attach her bait to the fishing rod. While it took the spider ghoul a few good moments to put on her spider bait, TK had already tied his worm to the line in a few seconds. The only thing he had to worry about was whether or not he tied it tightly enough. He was sure that the worm would lure in something useable. Puella’s spider bait, on the other hand? He was more content to merely see what exactly she was going to reel in with that.
Which, somehow, turned out to be quite the catch. The skeleton hummed thoughtfully as he took in the large fish. Perhaps the large bait had managed to lure it in? Though TK wanted to argue that size had its limits, not that he could complain when he was the same height as the spider.
Finally he tossed in his own line and a while later he was reeling in a skeleton fish. The stiff face from before returned. First Puella with her spider bait, and now him with his skeletal fish. He closed his eyes, rubbed his temples, and handed the fish over to the villagers. They would just have to make do with this.
