Name: Qyprenna Age: 18 Gender: Female Rank: Junior Weyrling Appearance:
Qyprenna is more petite than most candidates one might see. Standing at 5'2", she is also slim in stature due to all physical fitness and training that they are required to go through. Despite her training, the womanly curves that she was gifted with are still visible, even through her simple attire. Qyprenna prefers to wear simple clothing when she is not in uniform, sticking to functional pants and comfortable tunics. In periods where the weather is colder, she might wear longer sleeves under her tunic to keep warm, along with gloves to keep the cold off of her hands.
The young woman's hair is kept shaved, as per regulations for being a candidate. Before it was cut, it was light brown in color. The texture of her hair is finer than most, and it would become gently waved upon air-drying naturally. Since her candidacy, however, she much prefers the shaved style. Not having to worry about her hair is a relief to her, as she doesn't have to constantly fiddle with it anymore.
Qyprenna's skintone is a warmer caramel color. Her skin might get a little darker from extended periods outside doing her chores, but not by much. Thankfully, she doesn't burn that easily. Her eyes are a blue-ish gray in color and are adorned with feminine lashes. Her eyebrows are the only thing that give away the color of what her hair would be, had she not kept it shave. They are fine and kept neatly groomed, along with the rest of her attire.
Personality:
Determined Diplomatic Selfless Stubborn Self-Righteous Soft-Hearted Qyprenna, more than anything, is determined to give everything she does the best that she can. She works hard at the various things in her life, be it her chores or the physical training that she had to do to become a squire. If things are difficult for her, the young woman actually works just that much harder in order to achieve or get them done. They may not be one-hundred percent perfect (nothing can be, really), but the fact that she can push through and get them done is what matters to her the most. It's a way for her to prove to herself that she can do what needs to be done, even if it takes some time to finish. That's one thing that she prides herself in: not giving up.
Unlike a lot of people who can be a bit abrasive or have difficulty in dealing with others, Qyprenna actually excels at it. She is polite and tactful and is often very conscious of whom she is talking with or around. These things are important, especially when dealing with superiors or those who have a higher ranking or standing than she does. This careful nature of hers, however, also extends to her peers as well. Qyprenna is smooth when talking to others, and does her best to take the thoughts or concerns of people into consideration. The last thing she wants to do is offend someone or to hurt their feelings or make them angry.
From the time she was a young girl, Qyprenna has always put others before herself. She is a selfless individual, never generally asking for anything in return when it comes to helping someone. She is just happy to help, more than anything. It makes her happy and gives her a sense of satisfaction that she could help to do the right thing by aiding someone in need. This nature of hers, however, is a bit of a double-edged sword. Sometimes Qyprenna puts others before herself at her own expense. This might manifest in the young candidate overworking herself with chores or her duties, to the point where she passes out from exhaustion or ends up getting physically ill. Others generally have to point out to Qyp that she should take better care of herself, and it's really only then that she notices. She much prefers to put others before herself, as in her mind, other people are a lot more important than her own wants or needs.
Unfortunately, there are times when Qyprenna can be quite stubborn, sometimes annoyingly so. She is very set in her beliefs and her ways of thinking, and when someone tries to challenge that or tell her otherwise, things can get heated or difficult. She tries her best to not argue outright with other people, but good luck getting her to sway her or change her mind. She doesn't mind following the rules or doing as she's told in terms of chores or training - she's supposed to listen to her superiors and do as she is told. It's more toward personal beliefs or opinions that she is stubborn toward.
Qyprenna thinks that she is a good person. She does her best to follow the rules, to keep in line, and to not argue or talk back to those who outrank her. The laws and rules are put there for a reason, and it is her job to follow them. These views, unfortunately, can also be a bit problematic. If a person isn't as good as she is, perhaps by doing things differently or talking back to a superior, Qyprenna can be somewhat intolerant. It's not that the other individual isn't taking things as seriously as she is; they just might see things differently than her, and that can cause her to question their beliefs or opinions. Depending on who the person is, she might question their line of thinking or even tell them off. She wouldn't be above reporting on a person to their superior's, either, if she felt that it warranted such treatment (such as putting others at risk, for example).
Hearing that she is too soft or too kind was not unheard of to the young candidate. If there are people who are in need, or even just something as simple as a small animal, Qyprenna wants to help that person. She is very sympathetic to those who might be in need, even if they don't really deserve it. In her mind, it is always better to give people the benefit of the doubt. When she can't help everyone, it saddens her, but it's a fact that she needs to learn. You can't always save them all, as they say.
History:
Qyprenna was born into a farming family that calls High Reaches Hold their home. Her mother and father raised a number of animals, though their livestock was predominately llamas, which were raised for their wool. Qyprenna's father, Andraste, was a gentle and affectionate man. Her mother, Lia, was kind and caring as well. The two of them were a perfect match for one another. The couple tried multiple times to conceive children when they wanted a family, but unfortunately nothing came of it. The two of them considered themselves blessed when Qyprenna was born, and once that happened, they settled on just having one daughter to call their own.
The girl's childhood was a rather normal one. As she grew up, she often helped her parents around the farm. She took care of the animals, making sure that they were properly fed and the water that they needed to survive. She also personally brushed them herself and would watch the flocks out in the pasture while her parents went about their other chores. Her father would often go to town to sell the wool that the sheered from their animals, while her mother would take care of the home with the cooking and the cleaning. Every once and a while, Qyprenna would accompany her father to town to sell the wool, and these were days that she would look forward to quite immensely.
Qyprenna was around the age of 9 or 10 when the Dragonplague took place. Although she didn't live in High Reaches Weyr, she called the Hold her home, and thus was close enough to learn about the catastrophe that was going on to the dragonkin around her. When it was happening, she felt very scared and worried for not just the dragons, but their riders and those close to them as well. Her parents would often hear news from the Weyr on things going on, and she could remember her parents talking in hushed voices when she was around them. They didn't want to frighten the little girl, as the stuff they were talking about would probably give her nightmares, they knew.
The Civil War happened around this time, too. Qyprenna's father often spoke about how soliders were often getting ready or going off to battle. She didn't really understand it at the time, but the young girl knew that it was a big responsibility to go off and fight in wars. She also knew that it was honorable to do such things: to defend those around you who couldn't protect themselves. It was at that time that Qyprenna decided that was what she wanted to do. She wanted to help protect people, possibly by being a riding one day, though she had no idea if that would happen or not.
Years passed, and at the age of 16 Qyprenna and her family were approached by a dragonrider on a Search. It was a bit of a shock to the entire family, really. While Qyprenna had dreamed of such things, she had never expected a Searchrider to actually come to her home! She decided to go with them, at the blessing of her mother and father. It was a great honor to be a candidate for a dragonrider, and she had to take her chance.
The first year of her training went more-or-less without incident. The physical exercise wasn't too difficult on her. She had done a lot of physical labor at home, after all, while helping on the farm and taking care of animals. What did take some getting used to, however, was the drilling from the various superiors above her and those who trained her. It's not that she didn't obey or do as she was told; she just wasn't used to all the yelling. There were quite a bit of tears the first few weeks into her training, but eventually the young woman got used to it. Once she had learned the ropes, it was then decided that Qyprenna would become a squire, a prospect that thrilled her. It meant she'd be one step closer to becoming a dragonrider.
Qyprenna became the squire of a man in his mid-thirties named Gel'ric, who is part of the 2nd Wing. He had a handsome brown dragon that the young girl couldn't help but admire. He was a polite man, though he could be a bit demanding at times. When he wanted something done, he wanted it done now. Not two minutes from now. Right that very second! So it took a bit of getting used to on Qyprenna's part, getting everything done in the rider's quick fashion. She works very hard to please Gel'ric, however, and the dragonrider has taken note of her hard work. Hopefully, soon, she'll be able to try for a dragon of her own.
--
Things seemed promising when the candidate finally had a chance to Stand for the very first time. However, at the hatching, things took a different turn. Qyprenna was injured -- scratched on the right side of her face from the middle of her forehead to her lower jaw -- trying to retrieve a masterhealer's cane from two hatchlings. Despite her injury, she managed to Impress, to the very last dragon that hatched: a brown named Catoth.
What just seemed like a simple scratch turned quite gruesome in the days to come. The young woman's wound quickly became infected, and it also managed to irritate her other eye as well. Due to the strange, rare condition that was happening, Qyp then lost sight in both eyes a few days later. She has been completely blind ever since, and is in good health aside from that. She and her dragon are now in their Weyrling stage, and are trying to make the best of things.

Alfred Pennyworth I do believe I have forgotten how to sigh. But if I could, I would. The Advisor BrownInspiration: You've got to pick yourself an advisor, but, you have a problem. Everyone around you is a Yes-Man: spineless, coddling, and/or too concerned with gaining your favor or attaining their own aims to give the truth. Luckily, there's at least one person who isn't afraid to tell it like it is.
This kind of advisor isn't cruel, just blunt and outspoken. They'll never let their charge take the easy way out, never sugar coat the truth, and never be afraid to criticize. As a result, their wisdom is either completely appreciated by their students, or violently rejected if said student is the egotistical type.
If he isn't a mentor, but a regular part of the group instead, then he's usually the Deadpan Snarker, the constant criticizer, and more or less the one that annoys everyone but still gets their complete respect. All in all, this is who you want when it comes to finding a most trusted ally, and it's probably better to find people like this than your average minion.
The Good Chancellor is this as a matter of course. Often the role of The Jester in a royal court, getting away with mouthing off to the king either by couching criticism in satire, or by being (or appearing to be) mentally incompetent and thus not a threat. Another term frequently used in the past was "Naysmith" (which survives in the modern surname Naismith), meaning the one person in a royal court who could openly say "no" to the king's plans without fear of censure, forcing the king to accept criticism—the opposite of a Yes-Man.
Name: Catoth
Feel of voice: The smell of a library with the sound of a turning page, the flare of a candle in the darkness.
Appearance: Catoth is a fairly average brown, just about dead on thirty two feet long and nine feet tall. His build is typically stocky too but given his dislike of physical activity he will tend to be chubby rather than muscular. No amount of cajoling from his rider will persuade him to do more than the minimum amount of exercise required to keep up with the physical duties he can't get out of, and anyway a bit of extra fat is fashionable for humans so why not from dragons? That's his argument about it anyway.
Personality: If you were looking for brains you have come to the right place, please take a number and wait over there until called. Catoth is a very clever dragon indeed in just about every sense; he's logical, innovative, quick to learn, and so on. Importantly he is also sensible and practical, he's not one of those intellectuals who gets so tied up in their own cleverness that they can't see what's going on in front of their own nose, nor is he a scatterbrain in fact he is a very focused dragon. A slight disadvantage to this is that he tends to focus on one thing at a time so a sudden change in circumstances can catch him by surprise. In spite of this minor shortcoming Catoth has the potential to be a truly brilliant strategist and will not flinch from making his rider remember important facts that he might need to pluck from their minds at any time.
The world around him truly fascinates Catoth, he wants know how everything works and how things are done all around Pern. Of course High Reaches Way - his way, whatever he decides that may be - is the right way and others could stand to learn a few lessons from them, from him that is. He is a rather proud fellow, extremely proud in fact and pretty well convinced that he is the most intelligent dragon on Pern. His tutors and superiors may well tire of how he questions their teaching or orders but at least, once rebuffed, Catoth will sniff a bit and do as he's told in general; order is important, the world will go to run if people don't follow proper procedure.
As may be deduced from the above Catoth is not the biggest fan of change unless it's change he happens to have thought of, he is rigid and set in his ways and while he will not ignore blatant evidence that he is wrong he will still be slow to come around to any new way of thinking. He is also slow to adapt to changes and gets rather annoyed by even small alterations to his daily routine, this is not how things ought to be and clearly standards are slipping across the Weyr!
Though not an unsociable dragon Catoth will never be a fan of large gatherings or boisterous activity or foolish stunts or anything else of that nature. He would much prefer to sit and talk with a few close friends, discussing the nature of the universe and so on possibly with some games of chess if they can get their riders to move the pieces for them. He takes quite a long time to warm up to new people however, he is an aloof fellow, but when he does decide he likes somebody Catoth is a staunch friend. What he is not is somebody to go to when you want ego pets, he's as quick to correct his friends as he is anyone else and pulls no punches if asked for advice or opinions on this or that.
While he loves to plan and puzzle out problems, indeed he quickly becomes dour and listless if he doesn't have something to mentally wrestle with, Catoth is not at all fond of actually executing plans. He is the brains, he insists, and risking his valuable brain doing anything dangerous is quite foolish. He will take part in Threadfalls only reluctantly, because he has no choice, but don't expect him to get involved in anything else risky. He will strongly discourage his rider from trying to enter first or second wing, the death rate is simply too high for his liking. Call him a coward if you will but to Catoth it is simply good sense, there are plenty of dragons with brawn after all but few with a mind like his.
If there is one thing Catoth lacks then it is any particular personal moral compass. Left to himself he would probably remain a Lawful Neutral creature but depending on his rider's preferences he could comfortably swing over to Lawful Good or Lawful Evil. Whatever is important to them is what shall be important to him and that is quite simply the end of it.
Two tracks: x x
Why me?: Qyprenna is self righteous and Catoth thinks he is always right, and that by extension she is as well. They're both Lawful types as well, Catoth couldn't stand somebody who ran around breaking the rules all the time. Qyprenna's good way with people is a bonus to aloof Catoth, who would rather not deal with that sort of thing, and perhaps her work ethic can persuade him to do (just about) as much physical work as is needed in order to carry out his duties. Where Qyprenna would be too soft hearted however Catoth is unfailingly practical and not at all shy about dictating an essay to his rider about 'The Thing: Why You Should Not Do It', proper citations and all. Pets Name: Warden
Gender: Female
Color: Green
Age: 1 month
Obtained By: Given as a gift from Bereck
Appearance: Warden would be considered small in stature, even for a green. She weighs about five pounds, and won't get any bigger than that. The firelizard is piebald in terms of her coloration with dark green markings taking up the front portion of her body. From the start of her wings on back, she is lighter in color. Her back half, however, has spots of the dark green color she is on the front. These are dotted along her front legs, flank, back legs and even a little on her tail.
Personality: Although she is still young and still going through her training, it is clear that Warden will live up to her name. Attentive, she is very alert to the things that are going on around her. She is also quite intelligent, and is taking well to learning how to be a seeing-eye flitt for Qyprenna. The green is also very vocal and expressive, chirping and twittering when she's happy, growling and hissing when she's upset, and purring contently. Warden is only used to being handled by a few select people. When someone else tries to get her to do something, it's really a coin toss if she actually will or not.

Qyprenna was happy to stay in the examination room where Bereck looked at her over night. It was quiet, and she was allowed to just rest in peace with her beloved dragon. Going back to the dorms, while not terrible, would have been more difficult to get a restful sleep. Other weyrlings would be coming and going, chattering, doing this thing and that. She would have gotten no peace. In the confines of the examination room, however, she received just that, and for that she was grateful. Catoth was thankful for it, too, as it allowed him to keep a close eye on his rider. He needed to make sure she was ok. It was his job, after all.
Both dragon and rider took a much needed rest for the remainder of the morning. In the afternoon, when the masterhealer returned back to the room, they were up yet again. When Bereck cleaned her wound, the two of them were mostly silent. Qyprenna was too tired and sick to talk, frankly. Normally, she would have been more chatty and jovial, but not today. Catoth wasn’t particularly talkative, either. He was content just watching the healer do his job and make sure that his rider was taken care of.
Food was brought to them not long after that. The weyrling found herself picking around at the items on her plate, more so than actually eating them. Her appetite just wasn’t there. In the back of her mind, she wanted to eat. Food was something she enjoyed immensely. Her body, however, had other inclinations, and the desire for sustenance was not one of them. For about a half an hour, she moved her food around on her plate and played with it before finally shoving it upward on the table where it sat.
What she did have energy for, however, was feeding Catoth. Upon receiving the bucket of meat, the color of the hatchling’s eyes swapped again. A worried yellow faded and swapped to the bright, vibrant red of a hungry dragon. ’Ohh, this looks delicious,’ he exclaimed, accompanied by a trill of happiness. Qyprenna couldn’t help but smile as she fed her lifemate, and he snapped at the chunks of meat and gobbled them down without abandon. ’You have an appetite enough for the both of us,’ the weyrling commented, followed by a chuckle. ’That’s good, though. One of us should.’
After eating their lunch, the day for the pair of them was much the same as after they came in the first time. The two dozed again, for a time, until Bereck returned for his evening cleaning of Qyprenna’s eye. After that, there was dinner, which she pushed herself to eat a little bit more of, followed by the feeding of Catoth again. It was a simple evening, mostly consisting of resting and trying to take in nutrients in an attempt to get better. Once they had their evening meal, both dragon and rider found themselves drifting off to sleep for the remainder of the night.
The second day was much the same as the first. Qyprenna was allowed to stay for observation, since she still had a bit of a fever. The masterhealer explained, however, that she would be moved to a different room, so as to allow the examination room to be freed up again. The young woman didn’t mind the change of room, since she was so tired, anyway. Catoth also didn’t seem bothered, and he just followed along dutifully, keeping an ever-watchful eye on his partner.
Food. Cleaning of her wounds. Rest. More food, more cleaning, and rest. That was all that happened for the pair on the second day as well, and at the end of the day, Qyprenna curled up with her blankets and Catoth curled at her feet. They’d probably go back to the barracks once they woke up, and perhaps things would start to feel a bit more normal.
But things would not be normal. In fact, they got much worse, the morning following her second day in the infirmary wing.
’Catoth,’ Qyprenna said after she woke up, sitting up in her bed. There was a twinge of something in her voice that took a moment for the brown to place. What was it? Pain? Queasiness? Disorientation? After a few minutes, it was then that Catoth understood: Qyprenna was completely terrified. ’We have a problem,’ she went on to say. This was followed by an awkward groping around, reaching out to try and feel where the dragon was at the end of the bed.
’I can’t see anything. I can’t see anything at all.’
