“So a new Holder must establish and date their claim…” Elane frowned, her carefully plucked eyebrows almost knitting together. She was largely talking to herself, though she would have been mortified if anyone had caught her sounding out some of the larger words. “So what happens if you have a group of holdless who’ve just… lived there for more then a decade and no-one’s moved them on? They’d have to prove their claim through witness testimony…? Who’d be suitable...”
She hated this. In all honesty, the pretty bronzerider could barely read or write, and struggling through to learn basic law in a society she hardly recognised was not her idea of a good time. She made a mark on the slate and reached for Pellinorth, the bronze providing a wave of comfort and reassurance that she was doing the right thing. She couldn’t expect to succeed here without at least knowing a little of what she was about, and land rights were about as important as she could imagine. Land was wealth, land was stability, and land was power.
This common area in the lower caverns was not overly crowded - many were at dinner, though Elane had opted to skip most of that, retreating with klah and a bread roll. Though she needed to keep her weight up -she was certain she’d lost pounds! - she just wasn’t in the mood this evening. She had instead spread her carefully taken notes - parchment was expensive! - out across a table, and was diligently working her way through it.

Dinner for Qyprenna was usually spent taking care of her squiremaster and eating with him, though for some reason she wasn't feeling particularly hungry that evening. She did, however, serve Gel'ric and made sure he was taken care of, as was expected of someone in her position. He seemed to enjoy being waited on, and watched as his squire carefully served his dinner. Qyprenna took care to make sure that everything on the plate was neatly presented for him, so none of the food overlapped with one another. After that, however, she had requested to skip her own meal, in favor of coming to study a little bit more.
Some of the subjects -- government and law, in particular -- were proving to be a little bit dry and difficult to get into. It was for this reason that Gel'ric allowed his squire to excuse herself and go and get an extra bit of studying in. Although he could be a bit impatient at times, he was perceptive about what Qyprenna was having trouble with, so he knew she'd appreciate the gesture. It was thanks to her squiremaster that the candidate now found herself in the common area that she liked to frequent when needing to study, though she wasn't alone as she normally was when she got there. Another girl, a bronzerider, was sitting deep in thought over law books and notes.
"Anything interesting so far?"
Qyprenna couldn't help but flash a warm, gentle smile in Elane's direction as she said this. Once she spoke out, she then moved to sit in the spot next to the wingrider. The chair she plopped down in creaked in protest once she sat, but that didn't bother her. Carefully, the younger of the two girls set her own books and notes about neatly, so as to look over them more easily as she studied. A sigh of relief escaped her after she settled in, and Qyp allowed herself to glance over at Elane for a second time.
"Government and law, while interesting subjects," she went on to stay, her eyes drooping down to glance at her materials, "are frankly a bit difficult for me to retain. But that doesn't mean I can't try a little harder!" The candidate's friendly chit chat seemed to fade to determined silence after that, and it was then that she began to bury herself in her work. Sure, the material was hard to grasp, but that didn't mean she wasn't going to try her best. So long as she could at least remember the important things, she figured she would be ok.
