Forest by the Sea

A gorgeous, mostly-untouched place, with an ancient, almost timeless feel to it. Not precisely a forest, though there is a small deciduous wood along the cliffs that border the ocean and buffer the property from the worst of the storms, it is actually a series of gently sloping, grassy hills, rich with grass and flowers in the spring.

These have been converted into paddocks and training areas along with a modernized - but rustic looking stable, though effort has been made to keep the land as pristine as possible. A ways from the horse areas, there is an ancient (centuries old) vineyard on the property and a small herd of sheep, producing a small quantity of artisanal wine and cheese out of an equally ancient stone cottage.

This stone cottage is entirely for production, as both the owner and the original inheritor of the land live in the newer, more modern (and green) house, built on the cliff itself with a lovely view of the sea.

The area is of archeological significance - pale grey and white stone markers and old paths have been found, though their purpose is - as yet - unknown.

Raymond Williams

Raymond's foray into the world of horse breeding and racing was completely out of the blue. The adopted son of renowned archeologist Sonia Williams, Raymond grew up on tales of ancient cultures and his mother's adventures. His mother made money from speeches which – with his adopted father's surprising financial expertise – were invested in such a way that the family were able to have a tidy nest egg and send him and his adopted sister Vera Williams to a good college. Raymond initially studied anthropology and archeology, intending to follow in his mother's footsteps (his sister went to medical school), and he did very well. He was in his last undergraduate year when he discovered the wonders of horses in his school's riding program. What was, at first, an attempt to knock out his physical education requirement blossomed into a fascination with the large animals. Out of school, his mother's connections netted him a good job interning in the field with colleagues of hers, but in his spare time he researched the animals that had captivated him.

A friend of his from college, Khunm, contacted him one day. Khunm knew he had money, and that was what Khunm needed: money to keep his ancestral rural property out of the hands of the bank, and to keep a roof over his head. Raymond decided to investigate. When he saw that the land was not only of archeological but not a bad place for raising horses, Raymond decided that it was a sign. His internship over, he gave Khunm the money, moved to the land, and began to set up a horse breeding operation.

His favorite horse, Rook, was also his first. His money – still well invested and supported by his family – bought the land, built a house, and prepared the place for what he hoped would be a profitable operation.

Raymond is dark-skinned and haired, making it obvious that he shares no blood with his largly pale and jewish family. He is medium-sized, on the chiseledly-handsome side. He is always calm and erudite, and always well dressed. He is a little cool to others, however – he has friends and enemies, but few have ever seen him emote.

He is proud though- of himself, of his family, and of his horses, and it does show in a cool, calculating confidence: he is sure he will do very well, perhaps better than others. While he does not actually feel that he is better or worse than others, people pick up on this false arrogance, and may think he is haughty, which could cost him friends and allies.

Khunm Rali

Khunm was the owner and sole inheritor of the vinyard and the land around it, and he tried to make things work for a while, but the debt that had been accumulating since his grandfather's time struck hard, and he had to call an old school friend to help. He attended college, but ended up in a more vocational track, where he learned all about fermentation methods in an attempt to improve his family business. His passion is wines and cheeses, but all he has is a small processing plant, the vinyard, and a small herd of sheep. He sells their wool, as well as cheese from their milk and wine from the vinyard to help make ends meet, but he relies on Raymond a lot, emotionally and financially.

He is a tall and gangly young man in his late-twenties and early thirties with red-streaked black hair, olive skin, and green eyes. Quiet and awkward, he usually finds being around people difficult. He does like people, though, and Raymonds efforts to socialize him have been met with a great deal of gratitude. He does have a slight temper and a vengeful streak that can be unpleasant, but for the most part he is very insecure and eager to please. Too much so – he is very easily manipulated.

Although he is a sheep, cheese, and wine sort of guy, and he hopes to one day – with Raymond's help – expand his operation a little, he does not mind horses. In fact, he has fallen in love with them, and seems to have a sort of down-to-earth affinity to them. He helps out around the ranch when he can.

Sonia Williams

Sonia – pale, stocky, and full of life – is very clearly not Raymond's birth mother. Though they share no blood, she has never let that get in the way of giving their son as much affection and spontaneity as possible. She adores both of her children.

A renowned archeologist, the study of ancient cultures is, of course, her passion. But Sonia's passions take her everywhere, and she has tried just about anything at least once, with as much vitality as anything else. Sonia is a whimsical, good natured person, quick to laugh and slow to cry. She is infectiously optimistic and cheerful, and her serious son is a good foil to her. She is, however, very serious about everything she does and, though she does it with a spring in her step and a grin on her face, you can bet she's going to put her all into it.

She was invited to her son's new ranch to study the ruins there, but Sonia soon decided she wanted to try riding horses.

So she did.

Personality:

Rook is a calm mare, not prone to startling and tempermentality. She is gentle and intelligent, but she is not a trusting horse. Her past is unknown, though she has legitimate papers and was bought from a reliable horse seller. Raymond and Khunm suspect that it was not all flowers and sunshine, but there is no way for either of them to know for sure.

Either way, she is wary of new humans and new horses, and has only just allowed Khunm to touch her and Raymond to ride her. Typically, with new situations, she watches from a distance first and approaches later. She does not run, usually, but she makes her displeasure clear and will move away if able, and has been known to bite if her wishes are not respected.

To other horses, she is reserved, and - though willing to talk – she avoids talking about herself. She likes to be alone, but prefers to have other horses nearby where she can see, hear, and scent them.

Personality:

Eel was born to race. Win, lose, it doesn't matter to this horse. All that matters is running: the wind in his dark mane, the feel of the ground on his hooves, the sweat, the rush... everything. He is constantly in motion, and getting Eel to stand still requires restraints and strong people.

Windswept Eel actually likes people – he admires them. In fact, he wonders why they don't race too? They have such nice, lithe bodies. He is a touchy-feely horse, admiring their bodies and soft skin with both his eyes and his nose, and poking and prodding anybody who gets close enough. If he hurt someone with his fidgeting, he would genuinely regret it, but he can't help it: he just has to go.

Trainers find him a difficult horse to train, as he would rather be playing with them or running about on his own, and other horses might – eventually – find his singular obsessions with humanity and racing boring after a while.

He has little contact with his parents, though Rattlesnake Downs and Forest by the Sea are close (at least politcally), and that's fine with him. As for studding, he just does it because thats a thing he's supposed to do. He couldn't care less, so long as he can run.
