Lucayr, Journeyman Harper and Witty Wordsmith

Rider: Lucayr
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Rank: Weyrling/Journeyman Harper
Approval: [X]

Description: Lucayr is a fairly tall fellow, six feet three give or take an inch, with sandy-brown hair that falls loose about his face. It has a bit of a sassy, wind-blown look to it when it isn't covered by one of his many hats. His face is small with a convex, slightly pointed nose and a brassy smile that takes up a good portion of real estate. His chin is barely there and is just bare in general, as he has been unable to grow any facial hair other than his eyebrows. He observes the world through golden-hazel eyes that are usually glistening with impish intent. At present he is abnormally thin due to a new diet he's trying -- at least, that's what he'll say if anyone is eagle-eyed enough to notice through the fancy clothes he hides himself under.

Personality: In a word, Lucayr is sociable. Very, very sociable. This can make pleasant conversation with him difficult for the uninitiated because he’s the kind of fellow who insults everyone he likes, and he tends to like almost everyone. Those who’ve gotten close to him know that it’s a language of love… and an art form.

Speaking of art forms -- Lucayr takes all facets of his Harpercraft very seriously, though he didn't start out that way. It took a few years and a few tragedies to wake him up to the need for education and a generous helping of of common sense to be infused into the younglings of Pern. He performs the sanctioned Teaching Songs faithfully, but the songs he composes himself are usually dripping with sardonicism meant to make people stop taking themselves so seriously and start worrying about the bigger picture. Most notable social or political incidents he suffers through are immortalized in a farcical but moralistic ditty to be sung at the next raucous gathering -- with names and places changed to protect the messenger, of course.

An entertainer as well as an educator, Lucayr knows the allure of a great outfit. He prefers colorful clothes and scarves and is usually wearing some sort of hat. His flashy appearance and audacious demeanor as well as his velvety tenor make him the target of much affection, which he welcomes in a most platonic manner. Lucayr finds many women very attractive and loves spending time with them, but it never occurs to him to pursue - even moreso now that he has Impressed an infertile dragon who won't force that sort of diversion on him.

In regards to the Wherholder Revolution, Lucayr has not quite made up his mind and is still in the process of exploring all sides of of the matter. He's become very good at playing a Wherholder "Yes man," but he has a mind of his own, regardless of what mollifying drabble comes from his mouth in the presence of danger or discord. If he chooses to speak out against an offending person or issue, he will criticisze quietly, masking such words as compliments. In essence, he feigns being an open book, but he hides much of his true thoughts and intentions.

History: Born a tanner's son at Igen Hold, Lucayr always had a gift for lyric and voice, even from an early age. He went to Harper Hall at age twelve and became an apprentice there. He did well in his studies, though he was rather flippant about them and about authority in general. He displayed a certain knack for influencing the outcome of many situations, including quarrels between the other apprentices, without being noticed. Though the Masterharper was never quite sure exactly how it was being done, he saw the talent in the boy.

When Lucayr completed his apprenticeship and became a journeyman, he was assigned to Malvren Weyr to tutor the weyrbrats. This was mere days after the murder of H'trel, Malvren's Weyrleader. It was not a coincidence on the Masterharper's part; he sent the boy there with specific instructions to keep his head down and his eyes and ears open, and to report back to Harper Hall regularly. He was there taking notes all through the inter-Weyr strife, through the first Threadfall of the Pass and the resulting turnover in leadership, and the rise of the wherhandlers. As the dragonmen had begun to decline in their effectiveness, and in fact seemed to be overstaying their welcome, Lucayr was personally, keenly interested in Masterhandler Keller's and Ancientcrafter Archimonde's solution. He was at the demonstration of the Dragonlights, and found them truly marvelous.

The unanticipated, bloody revolution that followed this promise of victory split the young harper's heart right down the center. Though the Dragonlight demonstration proved to be mostly bluster in the end, it opened the door to the possibility that its secrets might be unlocked one day. Even if not, there were still other options, made widely known and available by Keller. The dragonmen were not the only answer. But so many innocent people, riders and nonriders alike, had been massacred in Keller's coup. So many friends he'd grown to love over the past few years. Why did they have to die? Why couldn't they just live the rest of their lives in peace? Was Keller afraid of dragon overpopulation? Wher eggs were destroyed when no hatchlings were needed -- couldn't the same have been done for the breeding dragons? He tried to convince himself that sometimes brutal force was necessary to bring about a time of prosperity. And maybe it was. But he hated himself for not seeing it coming.

When the dust of battle cleared, Lucayr returned to Malvren, apparently throwing his lot in with the Wherholders. He was lucky that he had been personally assigned there by the Masterharper, or else he might have been under much more scrutiny. He struggled with the decision for a long time and became deeply depressed, but hid it well with the brassy smile that was his harper's mask. The only real physical sign he showed of this distress was a drop in weight that he carefully hid under the bright clothes of an entertainer.

Over the next couple of years, as more dragons were inexplicably permitted to hatch in the Wherholds, including atypicals that were even more of a drain on resources, and dragonmen were permitted to attain rank, yet those living outside the Wherholds were still persecuted, it began to become clearer and clearer to many that hypocrisy ran thick in the Wherholds. After months of depression and lack of interest, a spark of inspiration suddenly came to Lucayr. He would find out for himself just how uneccessary dragonriders were. And if they weren't... there would be change. He would see to that.

Since the rules in the Wherholds were much more relaxed, it was not too difficult for the harper to finagle his way onto the sands at Benden Wherhold as a Candidate for Gold Banshidheth's massive clutch of eighteen eggs, though he was never Searched and teetered right on the edge of being too old to Stand. Though he had been faithful in sending reports of his doings and findings to Harper Hall, Lucayr had deliberately failed to declare his intent this time to avoid having to disobey the Masterharper if he forbade the young man to Stand. This was something he had to do, and if it broke his cover, so be it.

It was there that he Impressed what was arguably the weakest dragonet he had ever seen... an atypical black named Tikth who could barely walk and seemed plagued with chills even on the hot sand of the hatching grounds. If any dragon would be a drain on resources, it would be this one. He could not have asked for a better subject of study.

What the harper did not account for, however, was the bond between man and dragon. He would learn soon enough why all little boys want to be dragonriders, why the Weyrs fought fate so hard merely to exist, and why the magnificent creatures and their riders had to remain a part of Pern... forever.

Tikth, Handsome Freak and Reprehensible Riddler

User Image

Lucayr, will you come over here? Your Tikth is very hungry, I can't do anything while I'm so hungry!

Name: Tikth
Size: Below Average - This dragon is a bit smaller than average for its colour but not starkly so.
Build: Slim - This dragon is notably slimmer than an average dragon of its colour, but not so small that you could mistake it for another colour by size alone.
HP: 41
Agility: +3
Dice: 2d10
EXP: 0

Appearance: Black Tikth is a leggy, long-winged, lean dragon that looks particularly awkward on the ground when in the open. His long legs give him speed and reach in small quarters and his long, tapered wings enable his flight to be more acrobatic than usual. His face mask marking, however, can make it intimidating to lock eyes with him as it almost appears as if he is wearing a skull of some sort and his great whirling eyes glow from empty sockets.

Personality: Lurking and observing is perhaps the first and foremost thing one should know about Tikth. You see, this dark individual is comfortable in small spaces or out of sight but he always likes to keep others in his sight. He’s not necessarily a gossip, but he does like making sure no one is crossing his moral lines. Being more of a nocturnal individual, his colour lends itself well to this and while he is young, this tendency to lurk will play out in great delight at scaring people or dragons with his seeming ability to appear and disappear from places no sane dragon would Between to. Indeed, a Black’s innate skill at Between and his love of lurking may earn this one much infamy regardless of whether his skills are turned to useful pursuits or not.

If it wasn’t already apparent, Tikth is a playful individual at heart, enjoying the challenge of hide-and-go-seek with a passion that’s difficult to match. His enthusiasm is infectious and he often vocalizes with draconic laughter and shouts, quick to master the use of echoes and thrown voices to mislead his ‘prey’. Beware of angering this black, however. He may not be large or particularly strong for a dragon but his speed and spatial awareness give him an edge in combat no restricted to open areas. He’ll heckle, manipulate, mislead, and otherwise confuse the offending individual until he or she is horribly lost or exhausted from the onslaught.

Despite his trickery and inability to ease up, Tikth has one close-guarded secret, that he and His will know. That secret is that as much as Tikth adores causing trouble and running circles around people, he is always willing to stop IF they answer three of his riddles right, and only if. When someone does, and he doesn’t make it apparent getting him to stop is that simple, he’ll concede defeat and reveal himself, no less enthusiastic then before. An odd way to make friends, perhaps, but Tikth does so love his challenges.

As far as the Wherholds go, his is loyal to the notion of equality but whether the way Keller is going about it suits his concept of ‘good’ is another matter. Always willing to work towards guarding what he sees at right, Tikth’s tendency to work for the good could end up a powerful force for OR against the Wherholds and their methods. While this black may enjoy manipulating others, he is not immune to it either.

One last note on Tikth, he has an inexplicable love for rain on sunny days. He doesn’t know why but the mystery and refreshing experience of such events draw him like bees to honey.

Why me? Riddle me this: What do a harper and a dragon have in common? I'll give you a hint -- it certainly isn't music. For Tikth and Lucayr, a common thread between them is words. The dragon is a clever riddle-maker, while the harper is a writer of humorous, brassy, and often politically-charged songs. Both creative pastimes require a good deal of wit, of which the pair has plenty and to spare, but don't ask one to try the talent of the other, or you'll end up with painful knock-knock jokes and tuneless rhymes concerning the proper method of disembowling wherries.

Let's be frank. Lucayr seriously needs some encouragement... that or a sound kick in the pants. He's gotten himself so discouraged over politics that he's beginning to turn into a first class pessimist. A hearty laugh now and then would lift a lot of rain clouds, and then Tikth would have some of his favorite weather for a while. So you can imagine Tikth will be trying to wrest a chortle from his partner at every opportunity -- and precious few things are as contagious and inspiring as dragon laughter.

In return for the bolstering-up that he so needs in the days ahead, Lucayr will be an enthusiastic abettor of his dragon's penchant for toying with people. Not only is it useful for keeping someone busy or to confuse a pursuer - it's also just plain FUN to mess with people. And who better to do it with than your best friend? That being said, when an innocent entangled in one of Tikth's games has had enough, Lucayr will be the one to gently remind Tikth not to torture his poor victim.

As a journeyman harper, dedicated to teaching and dispensing wise counsel on the welfare of Pern and its people, Lucayr has always thought himself to be progressive. He was right on board with Keller's new ideas on equal opportunity for all, but like Tikth, he is starting to see hypocrisy and superfluous brutality that he'd rather do without. He's had to forego penning some of the most scathing, cathartical pieces he's ever composed to stay under the notice of too-numerous informers and too-paranoid leaders. Obviously, people aren't exactly encouraged to express their dissent in the Wherholds, but no one can know the true loyalties of a rider and his dragon when they are playing at intrigue in the privacy of their minds, or blending with nebulous shadows in a dark alcove reached by a discreet betweening, watching... listening...

Inspired by the Tikbalang

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Tikbalangs are said to scare travelers and lead them astray. Tikbalangs play tricks on travelers such that they keep on returning to an arbitrary path no matter how far he goes or where he turns. Supposedly this is counteracted by wearing one's shirt inside out. Another countermeasure is to ask permission out loud to pass by or, not to produce too much noise while in the woods in order not to offend or disturb the tikbalang.

A superstition popular with the Tagalog of Rizal Province is that Tikbalangs are benevolent guardians of elemental kingdoms. They are usually found standing at the foot of large trees looking around for anyone who dare to bestow malignancy on their kingdom's territory.

A common saying has it that rain from a clear sky means "may kinakasal na tikbalang."(Filipino, "a tikbalang is getting married".) This was potentially connected with a similar Spanish proverb that claimed a witch was getting married when there was rain on a sunny day, although many cultures have such sayings in which a trickster figure gets married (cp. fox's wedding, bear's wedding, monkey's birthday).

According to traditional folklore, the tikbalang can also transform itself into human form or turn invisible to humans. They like to lead travelers astray.

Tikbalang are generally associated with dark, sparsely populated, foliage-overgrown areas, with legends variously identifying their abode as being beneath bridges, in Bamboo or Banana groves, and atop Kalumpang (Sterculia foetida) or Balite (Ficus indica) trees.

Habitation

Having lived in his own room in Malvren Wherhold for the past two and a half years, Lucayr is none too pleased with being "demoted" to a shared room here at Benden. He acknowledges, however grudgingly, that Tikth's needs come first - and part of those needs is a living space suited to a dragon!

Recently assigned a shared weyrspace with J'on of green Karath. Let's hope they get along!

Name: Minx
Color: Green
Age: Hatchling
Bloodlines: Gold Harbinger x Brown Cat (Trine Weyr)

About: Minx is a terrible little imp, oddly similar to Lucayr and Tikth in that she adores shenanigans. The big difference, however, is the fact that she is malicious in her tomfoolery and loves to see strong negative reactions. She requires a strong hand to keep her antics under control. This often leads Lucayr to wonder whether her uses outweigh her inconveniences.

She is currently in training to be Lucayr's eyes, ears, and courier outside of Benden Wherhold.

Source: (Egg gifted by Shaddaling!) Minx's egg was bought from a trader. This may or may not have been a panic reaction when Lucayr Impressed Tikth and found himself effectively under house arrest until their Weyrlinghood was over.

These letters are for the Masterharper's eyes only and their contents are not common knowledge. They used to be delivered in person by Lucayr, but for now, as he must stay at Benden Wherhold until he and Tikth graduate from Weyrlinghood, they are delivered by a trusted dragonrider to Harper Hall.
