Keller hadn't ordered the organization of a feast but when Councillor Savarah came to him asking to set one up he didn't object, and indeed let it be known that he would fun the purchase two good herdbeast for it from his own funds.

Of course this generous action made it quite clear that the wherholds were not footing the bill for a lavish party and so it was that enthusiastic riders - and other folk, it must be said - rushed to preparations and dug deep to make the celebration a fine one indeed. Beasts were bought, slaughtered, and set to roasting; anyone with skills in baking pitched in to make bread, pies and treats; and copious alcohol appeared from hundreds of private stores and from contacts amongst the vintners.

The Weyrlings were about a day and a half old when everything was ready; the smell of smoke, meat, and baking filled the 'bowl along with ranks of tables, the fire pits where beasts still roasted, and an impromptu scattering of stalls. Laughter and the sound of music wafted through the air, punctuated by the cheers of a knot of people gathered around a woman doing sleight of hand tricks. The dress of the gathered folk was varied to say the least; some had opted for traditional gather gear while others were clad in military finery, all supple leather and gauntlets and more studs than a masterbeastcrafter's finest runner breeding facility.

Into all of this Onyal led her new weyrlings, a broad grin plastered across her scarred and weathered features. As the youngesters began to file out of the barracks Denath bugled and sent out a demand for the attention of all present dragonkin.

________

OOC notes:
- Weyrlings know full well not to even touch any of the copious booze on offer. Any player whose character intentionally drinks alcohol will have to roll a series of dice for the survival of their dragon.
- Anyone who spikes a Weyrling's drink will be strung up by their wossnames; the weyrling will just have to roll a dice for the dragon not to feel confused and unhappy for a while.
- Onyal will have helped any weyrling short on something they're happy to wear to the feast to acquire said clothing but there is no dress code, people can turn up looking as fancy or as scruffy as they like.

Kalendol had been looking forward to the feast, even managing to get a new outfit to wear just for the occasion. <Mine, do I glisten beautifully enough?> The dragonet beside her hummed hopefully, glancing up at her rider with curious fascination. Kalendol had spend a great deal of time oiling the dragonet until she was just as glossy as the girl herself felt. 'You look ravishing as always, Kynigoth.' The teenager smiled at her newest and dearest friend, scratching the top of her head with gentle happiness. Taking a deep breath she looked down at her outfit. It wasn't too different from her normal wear, though she'd not donned the tattered and worn out travel cloak she usually pulled over herself.

Kalendol was dressed in a thigh length, crisp, cream colored shirt, with an embroidered belt around her waist, a small jewel sparkled green on the belt, and ornate markings were gently etched into the leather band. Her father had in fact made this belt for her mother as a sort of "proposal" to moving in together. Now, it was hers, and she was thrilled that the gem within it matched her dragonet's scales. She'd donned a pair of skin tight riding pants in a dark color, similar to her everyday pants, and then sighed softly as she looked at the boots before her. Two pairs, one she'd made while with her "teacher" in the shop, and the other she'd made when she was younger, her first pair. The newer boots shone black in the dim light of the room, and she fidgeted a little. 'How fancy do you suppose we'll need to dress, Kynigoth?'

The dragonet was preening when her's spoke, so she had to roll her eyes to look at the woman with a sort of puffing of her chest. <Mine, you'll have to look your best to be seen with me.> The pale green teased lightly and nudged her rider lightly. <Try your new ones?> Kynigoth suggested, much to Kalendol's chagrin. The teen stuffed her feet into the new, shiny boots and frowned a little. They felt so very different from what she was used to. Not cheap feeling. Looking at Kynigoth she quirked an eyebrow, 'Well?'

<You look perfect, Kalendolmine.> The dragonet hummed in approval and then shook her head, <May we go?> Kynigoth seemed to be prancing in place with excitement. 'Yes, let's go.'

------ now ------

The girl was standing at the 'bowl, her eyes widening in wonder. It was so very different from what she was used to at home. The pale green at her side was inwardly squealing as well, <Mine! So many people! So many secrets waiting to be discovered!> She hooted in delight and pranced into the shindig, looking over her shoulder expectantly. Kynigoth was overly excited for this event. At Denath's bugle, the pale green seemed to lift her head all the higher, stretching her wings with slow determination. Kalendol gently lay her hand on Kynigoth's back, wary of all the festivities.

Ceirrys walked into the ‘bowl positively brimming with excitement and pride, knowing that he looked fit for a gather in a fine embroidered tunic over a crisp linen shirt, a wherry hide belt dyed a deep blue that matched Leszyth’s own freshly oiled hide well enough-- lent him by his father, the rich brown riding pants he wore were a new purchase, and he had deigned for comfort in a set of boots that were already broken in, but none the worse for wear.

The last day and a half had flown by in a rush, had a day really passed already since he and Leszyth impressed? He looked forward to seeing his family again at the feast, and he was particularly looking forward to getting more acquainted with the other weyrlings.

Leszyth for his part was eager to take part in the festivities, and to possibly see what tricks he could pull while no one was looking. His eyes whirled with excitement in a head held high, his wings neatly folded against his back as they proceeded after Onyal.

Ceirrys was grinning from ear to ear as the were handed weyrling knots and glanced down towards Leszyth, I hope you’re not going to make too much trouble tonight, I would like to enjoy the festivities you know! Leszyth looked up at him with almost trite indignation, Mine, I do not make trouble; It is not my fault if people are not wise enough to see my clever tricks! Besides, I want to enjoy this as much as you, just look at all the people, and the food, and smell all those smells, and ooh—what’s that?

Anali was, most notably, not standing close to where the Weyrlings entered, not handing out rank knots or offering pleasantries. That was not her job, not anymore. Oh, she was very much interested in the Weyrlings - had contributed what she could to the party, in fact - but was as careful as ever to distance herself as much as possible from the traditional image and roles of a goldrider. In accordance with that, her clothing was clean and well-made, but simple, nothing but a plain white shirt and brown skirt. I like this better. I won't lie, I do miss the fine clothes, but otherwise...

Oh, please. You would lie, if anyone could hear you but me. Still, if I remembered the old way more clearly, I am sure that I would prefer this as well, Banshidheth agreed (more or less), watching the Weyrlings filter in from where she had sprawled her not insignificant form. She was less carefully posed than she had been at the Hatching, noticably more relaxed but no less poised and no less attentive. Her blue-green eyes were fixed on the new pairs in attendance, assessing each dragonet thoroughly. Though she had faith in the Weyrlingmaster, she wanted to see for herself that they were well, each and every one.

There were speeches, and rank knots, and it was boring. This looks much more enjoyable.

Then go and enjoy yourself, if you like.

Soon enough. There's no hurry.

As you wish. The Queen left off speaking to her rider, and addressed the young dragons: Good day, little ones. I hope that you and Yours are well, and that you will enjoy what so many came together to do for you.

Lucayr was going all-out for this event. He was sporting one of his best ensembles: a bright crimson red tunic with a frilly white cravat and silver trim, belted with red braided tassels; black trousers embroidered with silver diamond patterns; red leather boots with moderate heel and intricate lacing; his treasured white spotted feline fur mantle wrapped around his shoulders; lastly, a red quilted cap that seemed to have collapsed and flopped over to one side, giving him a jaunty, jester-like appearance.

He looked down and grinned at Tikth, who was walking hesitantly beside him. The gangly little dragon's face was half concealed by a hood made from an old bright yellow scarf with slits cut for his headknobs. His fear of crowds had subsided notably over the past day and a half, as did his shivers, but Lucayr was more than happy to oblige the little beast when Tikth requested a covering like he'd been given on hatch day -- just in case there were too many people after all.

His round, faceted eyes whirled yellowish-green with uncertainty and wonder under the hood as he took in the sights and sounds, including that of his mother's vast golden shape and voice as it came to him. We are hale, as I trust you and Yours are, too, he replied. Though Lucayr is more delighted for the festivities than I.

Indeed it was so, for the harper carried his gitar along, knowing that most celebrations of this magnitude resulted in many a request for a tune. There were several other journeyman and apprentice harpers who made their home in the Wherholds. He hoped some of them had brought instruments or their voices, for he hadn't played with a group for quite some time and was looking forward to the possibility.

Malta and Poecileth

A feast, a feast, a proper feast! Malta couldn't remember the last time she'd been to one. Of course, it didn't come cheap – when Keller hadn't paid for the whole thing, Malta was all too happy to contribute. She had no stores of alcohol or anything, but, being thrifty, she had wages that she had saved up and could think of no better use for them than buying the weyrlings and the people of Benden weyr something nice for the party. Nothing specific – she had just added her marks to the funding coffers.

As a rider and a healer, she had connections in many of the holds, and she used them as best as she could – with her dragon's supportive help – to bring in many of the items and some of the people. It was a rush of activity that left her no free time to spare - exactly what she liked.

And finally, the feast day arrived... and it was time to celebrate. She had decided – unusually enough – to put some cosmetics on, and was dressed in her best: or, rather, her one major splurge purchase of the past. Mostly un-worn at all, it was a white dress that seemed to fit her better and better each time she put it on. For the first time, she was confident in how she appeared.

Poeileth was pleased at this change.

Malta joined the applause as the weyrlings arrived, her dragon rumbling in suit.

said Poecileth, watching the crowds with delight.

“I think it will too!” said Malta out loud. Mingling was not her strength, but she had decided to try this time and not be horribly awkward. That was usual. Today was unusual, and she would let it be so. For the time being, though, she watched from the side, drinking some of a non-spiked beverage, watching to see who she felt comfortable approaching...

Jamarin and Atibonth

This was really not his thing. Jamarin felt trussed up like a roast porcine, even though his outfit was not overly fancy: It was just new and not soiled. Jamarin was not afraid of people, but there were a lot of people, and suddenly they were all looking at him – them – the weyrlings.

He shifted uncomfortably at the welcoming, moving closer to his dragon. “Ain't this all a little much...?” he mumbled to the blue, watching the other weyrlings warily.

Jamarin shrugged. He supposed so.

Atibonth jerked his head up at the 'sound' of his mother's voice, giving a little trilling purr of delight. he said to Banshidheth, his greeting carrying with it the impression of a light little kiss and an affectionately gentle headbutt. He crooned again.

said Atibonth,

Jamarin had just made a beeline over to the food tables, and Atibonth had to jog to catch up as His piled a plate high with food. There was so much food. Some of it was already in his mouth. “Huh...?”

said Atibonth, gently – and amusedly – reproachful,

“Inna bit...” mumbled Jamarin through his food.

said Atibonth, accepting a piece of the food as Jamarin offered it. Mother> he said, said Atibonth, amused at Jamarin's grumble.

said the dragon merrily, rubbing his head against the boy's trousers.

Jikkiri and Langoneth

the brown complained, staring with red-eyed misgiving at all the people and dragons.

“But I do!” said Jikkiri, waving happily. He was soaking up all of the attention, practically basking in it.

said the brown, But he had promised.

“Yes, I did promise.” reassured Jikkiri, “We leave when you get tired. Don't worry, so, my beastie, I'll take care of you...” his eyes widened, “Ooooo, look at all the food!” There was so much food, so much of everything, and Jikkiri was very excited about it all.

Jikkiri was dressed in nice clothes, nothing fancy, but they were fresher and brighter than he had ever had before. He loved it. Langoneth had a bandage on his massive shoulder but was otherwise plain, as plain as a dragon could get. He wanted to be as unnoticed as possible.

He growled at the attention, moving closer to Jikkiri as he did so. he bared his teeth reflexively as his mother spoke in his head, and was about to send his usual mental snarl of keep out at her when Jikkiri laid a hand on him. “Tell her 'Thank you'.” he said, “From me.”

he grumbled, turning to Banshidheth

An image of Jikkiri, his Jikkiri, waving pleasantly. His Jikkiri was good, sweet, perfect, and his. And it was him that said the words that followed.
was what he said, in all it's eloquence.

As the beautiful Gold Banshidheth spoke, Kynigoth and Kalendol both looked towards the magnificent creature who'd given this clutch their life. Who'd waited with them on the sands, regal and magestic, for her children to hatch and impress. It certainly was remarkable in Kalendol's eyes. <Mother. To you and yours I wish you well also. I'm sure Mine and I will enjoy these festivities. Is all well Mother?> The dragonet was curious. Overly so, and unfortunately, this was the moment when she could perhaps delve and find secrets her mother kept under wraps. A mischeivous smile seemed to mask itself in her thoughts as the Dragonet looked up to Kalendol. <Mine, do you wish to greet Jamarin?>

The girl blinked her eyes at Kynigoth's suggestion and glanced towards the tables where the boy and His Blue Atibonth were currently feasting. 'I think I'll let him eat.' She sighed and then with Kynigoth slowly began to approach Anali and Banshidheth. Bowing at her waist a little she smiled, "Gold Rider Anali. It is a pleasure to see you and Yours here." Kalendol smiled.

The pale green Kynigoth smiled mentally and looked to her mother. <Would you and Yours mind a little company? My Kalendol is nervous around so many people.> She asked with sly ease.

~I think you are under-dressed Chosen, it is all right?~

Balkath worriedly asked, for all that he stepped proudly and sported scales as well oiled and glittering as most around him, showing off his unusual light blue colouring.

Shalev offered a one shouldered shrug and sent reassurance to the Blue. She too stood and moved, not proudly for that suggested ego, but surely and with confidence. What did it matter that her shirt was green and as unornamented as her brown leather boots and trousers. It was all relatively new.

~They said no dress code. I am clean and everything is in good repair. They don't keep the likes of you and I around to look pretty wingbrother.~

~This is so.~

The Blue agreed, nodding once, reassured. Perhaps coming dressed to impress would have done just that, and an appearance of wealth and therefore implied power might have been able to be used as a future bargaining chip.. But they were not trying to manipulate in such a way. Of course not. They would be seen as a pair with integrity, honesty and a lack of pretentiousness. Perfectly in line with the new system. That wasn't the point either of course.. At this point the Blue gave up before he upset himself, choosing instead to respond to his mother.

~Greetings from me and Mine, Mother. We will enjoy and endeavour to be worthy of it.~

"Food?"

~If it's okay.~

"You may as well enjoy the part Keller contributed for you lad."

~I wonder if we'll see him here?~

~I don't know Chosen. It would seem proper for him to come, but perhaps he is too busy for parties?~

~Could be. Lets get some food then have a peer at the stalls, I still have some marks left.~

Shalev took a few hunks of meat off the nearest table, she fed a few to Balkath before trying them herself.

We are quite well, Tikth, even better now for the sight of you and your clutchmates. Your hood is most charming. Did Yours make it for you? For her hatchlings, and for the sake of making good impressions, she would deign to make idle - albeit pleasant - chit-chat.

Atibonth! My little sentry. Genuine enthusiasm was the response to his greeting, her tail curling with pleasure. Banshidheth had a certain soft spot for blues, whether they were her offspring or not. She had never been able to say why, she simply had a curious fondness for them. There is nothing to apologize for, and no need for you to hurry. Allow Yours to enjoy himself, and we may speak later.

Aware of just how touchy Langoneth was, the gold was quite pleased when he returned her greeting, and not wishing to aggravate him by overstaying her welcome, so to speak, sent back wordless but appreciative acknowledgement.

All is very well, Kynigoth. If it is your wish to join us, we would welcome the company. She lowered her head when the little green approached, blinking faceted eyes at the young dragon and her rider. Beside her, Anali smiled and offered a hand as Kalendol bowed. "Please, there is no need for such formality. Anali will suffice. It's a pleasure to meet you, Kalendol. And Kynigoth."

When Balkath returned her greeting, she met the response with silent approval. He was a striking fellow, the palest blue she could recall ever seeing, save for those splotched forefeet of his.

With a sigh of pleasure, Kalendol took Anali's hand and gave it a quick pump. "The pleasure is all mine, Anali." The girl grinned from ear to ear and then looked at Banshidheth. "And a pleasure to finally greet you in close proximity, Mighty Gold." Kalendol grinned. She was prone to unknowingly be a flatterer. Kynigoth hummed at being acknowledged by the rider of her mother.

<Please impart to her my pleasure as well, Kalendol.> Even a dragonet, she knew that it was polite not to speak to a rider who was already bonded directly. "Kynigoth wishes me to tell you she's pleased to meet you as well." Kalendol smiled and then felt a blush creep on her cheeks. "This is some party. Hard to believe it's for all of us." She laughed, trying to make small talk.

Kynigoth looked towards her mother now and her tail curled slightly in happiness, <Are these sorts of things common, Mother?> The little green asked, her thought speech filled with open awe.

Vosin and Killakeeth

It was a good thing that everyone had contributed to the "feast" of a couple herdbeasts donated by Keller. That was something the weyrs had going for them. They knew how to celebrate. It would have been pathetic, and frankly insulting, with anything less for the wherhold's first clutch.

Hearing that the wherhold was contributing everything else, Vosin wrangled her siblings early the day of the feast into the kitchens. The siblings spent many hours helping to prepare sweets, kneed bread, and washing greens for the feast. Finally late in the day, the trio was released to get ready themselves. Vos sent her brother, Esre, to clean up and dragged her twin off to the tubs. After cleaning up, Vos braided her twin's pretty red hair. Starting with twin braids at her temples to meet in the back in one braid. Vos sat patiently as her twin braided her own hair into several braids wrapped around her head.

If Vosin had her way, she would have worn her normal clothes to the feast. However an insistent voice not belonging to either twin deemed otherwise.

This is our time to shine and put our best foot forward starting from here Vosin. We should look our best and enjoy ourselves. Killa observed her rider as she watched both girls. The gold gleamed brightly with fresh oil as she lay stretched out on her bed. She turned her green eyes to Vesin as well to show both were included.

Though she argued it was to no avail. The dragonet was firm. Vos sighed and picked out her best outfit. The teen didn't wear dresses; they were too difficult to do things in. Instead she pulled out a white blouse with a dark brown vest with a nice fitting pair of matching brown pants. Ribbons matching their dragons were woven into their braids. With boots shined up, they were ready.

Vos linked arms with her twin as Killakeeth paced elegantly alongside Vos' other side. She rested a hand on the dragonet's head as her hip got bumped several times. With a grin, she followed Onyal to the feast. The family had spent a joyous night with the family's new riders, so they could completely enjoy the feast tonight.

When the call went out to the dragons of the wherhold to welcome the new warriors, Killakeeth lifted her head proudly. She purred to those who had gathered. It is a pleasure to be among you all. she commented to the dragons. Her attention was drawn to the much larger, and only other gold here when she spoke up. Thank you for the welcome Banshidheth. We will most certainly enjoy it, and we are looking forward to mingling.

"Anali and Banshedheth is here Ves. Ooo hey look Jikki!" Vos wanted to wave, but the boy looked busy. "Looks like all that work in the kitchens paid off too! I can't wait to try some." Vos was so glad she'd made sure the gold had been stuffed full before they'd come. Otherwise she would have dragged Vos off to feed her first thing and no idea how long that would have taken. She really wanted to mingle with the other new riders now that they had a breather.

Vesin had happily got pulled along with her sister to the kitchens early that morning, even if it meant being awake early. Yet, now that she had Xibath, it seemed like she always had to get up early for one thing or another. She didn't mind though, she felt happier than she had the whole beginning of her life. It was as miraculous as other riders had said. Once finished in the kitchen, she happily went and scrubbed off all the grime and took her time doing Vos' hair in intricate braids wrapping around her head. Ves had chosen something much more simple for her hair, though keeping signature braids. Even if it wasn't a big braid, she would always have some kind of braid in her hair.

Vesin had been a little put back by Killakeeth's insisting that BOTH the twins look their best. The gold's green eyes had told her that there would be no arguing with that fact and she resigned herself to it. Dressing in much the same clothes as her twin, Ves delighted in the green ribbons in her hair that was one of the few ways people would be able to tell them apart, besides their little dragons of course.

Xibath rumbled happily, taking her own delight in the green ribbons in Vesin's hair. She commented to Vesin as the twins finished getting ready.

Ves smiled at Xibath's comment and when they were ready to go, she was almost a mirror image of her twin, except with the green ribbons and green dragon at her side.

Xibath couldn't deny the pleasure it brought her seeing all the people of the wherhold come together to make this happen for the newly impressed pairs. If they could come together for this, there's no telling what could happen.

Vesin sensed a sort of wonder and curiosity, as if she wanted to form a plan to try it out. She said with love. As Vosin pointed out Anali and Banshedheth, she dipped her head politely at the pair. SHe couldn't help but smile at all the people her sister pointed out. "It is amazing isn't it? We'll have to go try one of all the treats we made!" She giggled. They hadn't been allowed to while helping make them but now they were fair game.

Mother, and we hope we can plan some time for ours to meet. Mine has a twin sister that impressed Killakeeth. It's very odd seeing the same person, and knowing its not.> Xibath remarked honestly to Bandshidheth.

It hadn't occurred to J'ric to wonder whether there would be a Hatching Feast. As far as he knew, there always was. That was the way of things. So it was a bit of a surprise to him that the Wherhold had to get permission from Keller, and gather funding and supplies from volunteers. Still, no matter where it came from, there was a feast, and he and Imlebeth would attend.

Imbeleth had been freshly washed and oiled, though J'ric had to keep his dragon from poking about and getting dirt stuck on the oil. J'ric didn't have particularly fancy clothes, but his mom had been so happy that one of her boys Impressed that she'd found a weavercrafter and bought him a new set of good clothes. So when he entered the feast with Imbeleth by his side, he was wearing an ivory-colored shirt with red and gold scrollwork designs stitched around the collar and end of the sleeves, along with a deep brown leather vest in a shade that nearly matched Imbeleth's hide, and a pair of good black pants.

When they arrived at the feast, J'ric found it had more the feel of a Gather than the last Gather feast he'd been to (which admittedly had been several years ago, and him young enough to not pay much attention to anyone but his parents). As soon as they'd entered the weyr bowl, Imbeleth's head was turning so he could hatch all the sights sounds and smells. Oh, there's so much here! he delightedly told J'ric. Oh, what's that smell? And what is that person doing?

When Banshidheth addressed the weyrlings, Imbeleth spared her only a moment's attention. Yes, we're doing great, he told his mother. I'm gonna get Mine to show me everything! Then he was off, scampering towards where he could hear music was coming from to see what that was. J'ric ended up running after his dragon, to answer his questions and hopefully keep him out of things he shouldn't be getting in to.
