Hobbies: Reading – Owen is a frequent visitor to the Destiny City Library, and could quite happily whole up there for hours. Only card limits prevent him from checking out piles of books taller than he is. His bedroom at home is even worse; filled with more books than toys or clothes, stepping inside his room almost like entering a mini library. He’s not particularly picky about what he reads, either. He has a hunger for knowledge that only reading can truly satisfy, and will happily crack open anything from a mystery novel to a biography to an encyclopedia. He has a particular soft spot for adventure stories, however, and ones that involve animals. There is literally no topic he finds uninteresting – at times he has even cracked open a dictionary! (Well okay, he might not read a phone book unless there’s absolutely nothing else around, but that’s one of the only limits.)
Owen is more than happy to recommend a book to someone, to loan one of his own copies out, to get into an argument over what book is better... in short? The kid's a walking library and librarian all in one. He hasn't heard about book clubs yet, but it's only a matter of time. Once he has, he'll probably found one. Or two. Getting together and talking about books, and reading books together -- it would be a paradise for him!
Building Models – One hobby of Owen’s that takes up a significant portion of his time is model-making. Miniature replicas of everything from vehicles to architecture dot the small home he and his mother live in, though only one unfinished project can ever be found at a time. It’s a policy of Owen’s to not start something new until the old one is finished, no matter how long it might take. That doesn’t mean it’s easy for him, because sometimes his stack of to-be-built models looks truly tempting, but he does his best to keep his focus. It helps that model building is one of the hobbies he does primarily with his mom – as a single mother, she Is quite often busy with work and unable to spend too much time with him, and having this hobby set aside to do together ensures that they will always have a good reason to sit down together, talk, and just be there for each other. He has a particular favorite type of model that he prefers above all others, however, and that's model airplanes. He knows everything about those planes, and would gladly get into a debate over what's the best one, what one looks the best versus what one would function better. When he was younger and still did show and tell, it was always some form of model he brought to talk about - and getting him to stop was a challenge! Anyone who wants to know about models can come to him and find out (in excruciating detail), everything there is to know. Though he does prefer to take part in this hobby with his mom around, if she's working late and he has to spend a few hours at a community center, he'll gladly take one with him to work on while he's there.
Virtues:Calm: Owen is one of those children who rarely lose their temper. While others are throwing hissy fits or flying into rages, Owen will be levelheaded and logical. It is very difficult to ruffle his feathers, so to speak. This doesn’t mean it’s impossible to make him mad or upset – far from it, in fact. He can get just as upset as any other kid; the difference is that he has the exact opposite of a hair-trigger temper: an extremely long fuse. Because of this he can put up with a lot of foul treatment and behavior before he gets mad, and gives bullies the most frustrating response they can get: a non-reaction.
Diligent: There’s one in every class – the kid who turns in every homework assignment on time, sometimes even early; occasionally even with extra work attached! Teachers love them, other kids often call them the teacher’s pet. In Owen’s class, he is that child. It’s not out of some desire to please the teacher, or to try and show up the other children. Rather it’s simply that he is growing up under the philosophy that ‘if anything is worth doing, it’s worth doing well’. It helps that he is intelligent enough to keep up this level of effort, at least at this age. He will see a project through to the end, will give it 100% all the way through, and will actually avoid taking breaks if there is work to be done. If this seems like an oddly grown-up trait for a boy of nine, it’s important to remember that he’s the only child of a young, single mother, and he often feels as though it’s his duty to take care of her.
Kind: Owen is a sweet little boy. If there is someone near him who is upset, he will take the time out of his day to stop and check on them, to see what’s wrong and if there’s anything he can do to help. He likes to make other people smile, and from the time he was a toddler would do his best to think of little things that would make life easier for someone, or bring a smile to their face. If this means giving his pudding cup to someone who’s having a bad day at school, he’ll do it. If it means searching for hours with a classmate for their missing pet? Again, he’ll do it. While he doesn’t have a pet of his own, Owen has gathered a small army of stray cats that hang out around his home, because he doesn’t run them out of their garbage but rather does his best to offer food for them when he can.
Flaws: Bossy: Because Owen is intelligent and tries to behave as a miniature-adult, he often tries to act like one as well. This includes trying to take on the mantle of authority as often as possible. He knows what’s what better than anyone else does, so they had better listen to him! He will respect adults, but to children around his age and younger, he can be horrible and demanding. Owen is one of the kids you don’t want to have in a group project, because he will do one of two things: he will either expect everyone in the group to follow his instructions and act as the leader and taskmaster, or he will simply give up on his groupmates as hopeless and try to do absolutely everything himself. (Some of his classmates might appreciate the latter, though.) In other words, Owen can be pushy and obnoxious in his attempts to organize and control the world around him.
Opinionated: Owen is always right. Always. Even when he’s wrong. His opinion is the best opinion, and anyone who has a differing one needs to get out, because his or her opinion is stupid. (This is, of course, all in his own little head, because there is no person alive who is right all the time, especially not at nine years old.) Owen is smart, responsible, and knows just about everything – or, at the very least, can look it up, so clearly he should be in the right, or so he believes. Because of this, he is absolutely convinced that once he has made up his mind about something, his view of things is correct and perfect. Different point of views are tossed aside because they are flawed by virtue of not being his, or by being unfounded and unresearched and therefore somehow wrong. Owen is one bullheaded little boy and getting him to budge on an opinion is like getting a twenty-pound rock to fall uphill. Basically? He believes himself to be the absolute final authority on anything he's made up his mind about, and refuses to accept the possibility that he might be wrong, or that another's point of view could be just as valid as his own.
Perfectionist: Everything in Owen’s life has order and that order must be stuck to. He works hard at what he does, and so he must be rewarded. Studying must be rewarded with straight As, building his models means he can’t end up with a lopsided building, and whenever something goes wrong – and it will go wrong, because even the smartest, most careful student will make a mistake, miss a question, and even the steadiest hand cannot always glue something on exactly right – Owen’s world is disrupted. He doesn’t throw a fit or get angry about it, though. His reaction is to find somewhere to curl up and sulk, as if that will somehow reorder the world and make it return to the order it needs to have. He is perfectly capable of pouting for hours, stewing in his own dissatisfaction, until something happens to effectively and thoroughly distract him, or he is able to fix what went wrong in the first place. Many a model has taken him far longer to complete than it should have, because some piece wouldn't glue in the perfect position and he would stop working for a while while he pouted about the unfairness of the world. Fortunately in these cases, his mother knows how to snap him out of this state and get him to try again - but this only works at home, when she's around. At school and while she's working? That's another story. Owen's perfectionism doesn't just apply to himself, you see - he demands it of those around him, as well, and is an exceptionally harsh taskmaster to any unfortunate groupmates he has. His bossiness and demand for perfection are likely to keep him from ever becoming class president or hold an elected position, because he asks for and expects the impossible, and when he doesn't get it will fall into a sulk and a thoroughly sour mood that could drive off those who seek to cheer him up or offer encouragement.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTIONEyes: Large, oval, and a creamy light brown in color.
Hair: Light blue, chin-length and fluffy - he tries to keep it in order, but it doesn't really work. Tends to always look like he just took a long walk in a windstorm.
Face: Owen's face is somewhere between heart-shaped and round, though he has enough baby fat still that it could just be youth filling out his features. His ears are a bit on the larger side, but considering his hair it's hard to notice this most of the time.
