“A boy may be as disagreeable as he pleases, but when a girl refuses to crap sunshine on command, the world mutters darkly about her moods.”
— Scott Lynch, Republic of Thieves"
Name: Jonquil Rose Fisher
Nickname: Quila
Age: 13 15
Birthday: April 17th
Sign: Aries
Gemstone: Diamond
Blood Type: A
Fav. Food: Everything except seafood but especially french fries. French fries are THE BEST. Bad french fries are the devil
Hated Food: Seafood. Ew.
School: Knightside Elementary
Hobbies:
Sewing: Quila learned to sew from her grandmother, as well as how to crochet, and can make a fair range of things, including clothing, but really she loves to make TOYS. Not just any toys either, her sewing table is a furry, fleecy and satiny Frankenstein's Laboratory, churning out complicated and strange monsters and stitching experiments. She's learning to add beads, and readily abuses the stitch types on her sewing machine to get different effects. She wants to learn to quilt, but the piecing so far, taxes her patience. She's trying though. Friends and family can almost count on being 'gifted' with a twisted, fluffy monster.
BOOMBOOMBOOM: ACTION MOVIES! YIPPIE KAI YAI YAY MOTHER.... Trucker...
Explosions, mechs, fighting, car chases, Quila loves action movies of all kinds, and although she has no actual martial arts training, this hasn't stopped her from wild flailing, yelling and kicking, or pretending that she can actually learn that technique from Kill Bill. Or any technique from a movie. She's not technically SUPPOSED to be watching said movies, but her older brother smuggles them in and lets her watch when her mother is out of the house. They don't own a microwave either, so she's good at doing popcorn on the stove and making savory spice combos for it.
Anyone up for movie night?
Ballet: Her mothers idea at first, and Quilla was seriously reluctant... at least until she realized how much WORK it took. Dancers look frilly and delicate, which Quilla is kind of not sure she wants to be at all, but Ballerina or Ballerino, it takes intense power and training, and that is in fact pretty stinkin' cool. She's still pretty new, and to be honest, has more enthusiasm than built in talent, but it hasn't stopped her from trying to do pointe or jette or any of the other terms she probably for going trying to do giant leaps down the hall.
Thrift Store Diving: Mostly an window shopping adventure, Quilla likes digging through thrift stores for the unique and... unusual. Especially when it comes to hilariously weird bits of costume Jewelry. Her favorite find, and one of the ones she actually bought (for two dollars, she'll boast) is an silver hippopotamus (probably plate) necklace with pink faceted 'gem' eyes.
Virtues:
Competitive: She adores contests, prizes, goals, and loves to be part of a team, even though she's not technically that fond of actual sports. She loves the feel of people coming together, that moment where a really good team just -clicks- and starts to really work better than average, when they start feeling more like a raw, unpolished family. Even if she lacks a team though, she'll still try to win, and tried to set a new record in a reading club by herself when she didn't think anyone else was taking the potential pizza party seriously enough.
She never did get the drool stains out of that book she fell asleep on though...
Curiosity- Given her occasional struggles to stay focused around other children, as well as her own burning curiosity about the world and love of discovery, those who take a little time to know Quila will not be surprised to know she's hungry to learn, and a good self-teacher. School, a high pressure social environment, frustrates her, especially right now, and she acts out, but it doesn't dampen her desire to know and she sucks up reading material of all forms, even at levels that are technically above her grade level, and tucks them away for later. This occasionally appears as her ability to pop up with random trivia from things she's read and tucked away, but also comes up in outside learning environments. Take away the pressure to socially perform, and Quilla is an fabulous student, throwing herself into learning, just because she wants to learn. Unless it's a Miss Manners course, at which she will absolutely balk at the moment.
She's very good at self directed learning, making her an easy to handle student if you CAN remove her from the more difficult social aspects of a school setting, and this translates into other parts of her life as well. Give her a problem to figure out and step away, and she'll have at it until she, and whatever resources she has available to learn from, can sort it out.
Her dogged, starving-to-learn approach to her self directed study also mean she can be quite collected about her mistakes, providing no one needles her for them. If not called out on the subject, she'll just quietly move forward and try again. It's outside niggling or scolding that will cause her to loose focus and fly into a rage.
Clown Around: Again largely appealing to the younger set, One of Quila's attempts to figure out where she belongs in the world has led her to trying to make people laugh. She figures people will laugh at her anyway, so why not make them laugh on purpose? Her attempts to this end usually involve her Mock-Cussing, as well as occasional pun slinging, or outrageous behavior... like that time she tried to hand-walk across one of the cafeteria tables. The problem with this is that if things don't... quite... go as planned... feelings can get hurt... and when her feelings get hurt... Quila tends to get a bit... aggressive. ((See flaws)).
Sincerity:: With few exceptions, count on Quila to mean what she says, even if she only means it RIGHT THAT SECOND and is apologetic and guilty ten minutes later. She's a poor liar, and will shuffle around and try and find something to compliment rather than outright tell someone that the shirt they're wearing, say, looks like a donation drop box threw up on them in violent fashion. Given the rest of her personality it can be a bit of a surprise that she has it in her to demonstrate ANY kind of tact, but she does try, Ask her for her word, and if she can give it, she will give it, but she'll never tell you she will when she won't, and once given, she's reluctant to break it without a very clearly defined reason.
Flaws:
Aggressive: Even Quila herself couldn't tell you why she does it, but she's a firecracker looking for a face to blow up in. If words and volume don't seem to be getting anywhere, she's quick to snap, and when she snaps, it usually means fists fly... or worse. She has biting on her permanent record, Fewer in recent years, but the trail of tooth marks have her listed as a biting problem, and as much as she wants to help people, to have people be close to her, this tendency to be aggressive and mean can really drive them away... which makes her angry... which makes her aggressive. It's a vicious cycle, and she's not sure she can overcome it easily.
Sensitive: Every time Quila insists she doesn't care what people think, she's lying. She cares. She cares deeply, and the wounds scar. She wants to feel like she's loved and wanted, but also wants to be herself, and she feels at home being loud and proud, and thinks that's what she wants to be, but loud and proud isn't for everyone, especially her mother, and it leaves her painfully conflicted between rebelling loudly and frequently, and trying to be what her mother thought she'd get in a daughter. It doesn't help either when her 'loud and proud' opinions earn her the scorn of her peer group, leaving her feeling undermined in her sense of identity, unsure what to do.
Conflicted identity: Quila struggles between being herself, a loud, slightly crude young woman with a forceful personality, and trying to be a sweet, refined meek lady, like her mother dreamed of. She has enough trouble rationalizing being a rage filled angry tomboy who loves pink, (since there's a lot of cultural bias that pink is for frilly, girly girls), let alone trying to sort out in the haze of early teendom if she can be herself and still have a mom who loves her. ((The answer is yes, but she doesn't fully get this yet.)) This feeds into her aggression and makes her particularly mercurial, a difficult friend to weather, and not for the faint of heart, especially when her attempts to make people laugh make her the target of the wrong kind of laughter.
The Encyclopedia Kid: It makes Quila feel smart, and like she has an inside track on the BEST inside jokes, but her big vocabulary, especially in conjunction with her other mercurial traits, makes Quila "That Weird, Smarty Pants Kid". The show off. The teachers pet hen her grade is a little higher. The nerd. Children are frequently cruel to those outside their perception of normal, and quick to cut down an outsider to secure their own place in what's practically a pack structure. Her unusual vocabulary list definitely fits this criteria, and others can be as quick to laugh at her use of words as to laugh at her for using them.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
Eyes: Gray-blue, round and highly expressive.
Hair: Silvery gray with highlights, cut very short, something vaguely like this. Her hair used to be long, and curled, but in a fit of rebellion she cut it herself, and her current style is a Salon's attempt to salvage the DIY trainwreck. (She likes her current hair but feels kind of guilty over the tantrum that led up to it.)
Face: A mostly oval face with a delicate pointed chin, and a slightly long, narrow bridged nose, and a pale lipped mouth. She has double pierced ears, but no other piercings right now, and a light scattering of subtle freckles.
