Recess had lately become more and more chilly with the passing days. Summer had gone and the fall weather seemed a little colder than normal today, or perhaps it'd gone straight to winter? Either way, the sun was nice but it was still cool enough for a jacket.

One which Istas bundled up in almost instantly when they were being taken outside to let off the build up Energy. Istas had some snacks in her bear shaped backpack that she carried with her, some was candy from Halloween along with chocolate covered pretzels, sliced apple, and even some juice boxes. She also had a few smaller story, coloring and puzzle books in this bag in case she didn't feel like playing. The tubes were filled with children, so were the playground where the slides were and the swings. The picnic tables however, opposite of the teachers weren't that full.

And since Istas wasn't sure there was anyone to play with, made her way to one of the empty picnic tables. "I suppose it could be worse, couldn't it?" She said to herself as she headed over the bear shaped bag slung over one shoulder. It seemed everyone was playing weather they normally did or not just to keep warm.

"Worse than what?"

Quila Fisher still looked a bit startling, since only recently she had been sporting a long tangle of wavy silver curls, not as dramatic perhaps as Istas' ringlets, but their loss to the short pixie cut she sported now had been without a hint of forewarning... unless you took Quila herself as a warning of mercurial action.

The boyish cut looked a little odd with the fluffy, white sweater with the heart motif across the chest in a march of shifting rainbow colors, but it was a favorite, and showed a few patches of hard wear as a testament to this. She thumped her own bag, purple and utilitarian, and covered with buttons, onto the table near by without asking and unzipped it, pulling out a sandwich (it looked like either peanutbutter or a fluffernutter on grain bread.) and a thermos.

"It could be like on that show, Deadliest Catch, and there could be CRAZZZY wind making ice all over everything. I bet that would actually make the slides about a billion times more awesome though." She debated. "That would be wicked fast. Like using waxed paper."

Istas chuckled slightly, as she looked at Quila, "That would be worse alright." She said as she fluffed up her fur trimmed jacket. It was a soft pink color and black fur, she'd begged her parents for it and glad she had because it was nice and warm.

Istas was looking at the other girl with a slight curiosity. Noting the sandwich that'd been pulled out as well, as Istas pulled out her own stash of stuff. "I'm afraid I haven't seen Deadliest Catch in a full Episode. I usually see the commercials, my parents prefer I watch more... Age appropriate stuff." Air quoted around age appropriate followed suit.

"But ice everywhere sounds both fun and a little overly dangerous. I prefer a nice blanket to wax paper, maybe not quite the same speed but less road rash if you make a rough landing." The pre-teen smiled as she took out her pretzels and a juice box. "I sort of wish I had hot chocolate now." Having glanced at Quila's thermos and then to her own juice box. Juice was great but it didn't keep one warm in the cold weather.

"I'm Istas by the way!" She offered as she pulled out the assorted books. Pondering if Quila appeared to be the type to be interested in a puzzle game of sorts.

"Mom doesn't like it, but there's way worse stuff on. I mean they beep out the interesting words, and DISNEY does worse stuff. I mean they're fishing for stuff, it's a job. It's not like Hunchback where they tried to burn someone alive, but it was ok because there were dancing gargoyles." She theatrically pointed a finger down her gullet and gagged.

"I don't get to watch it all the time, but sometimes it's cool. It's super tough though. I couldn't do it." That and it seemed to be a real boys club, what with the superstition about girls and boats. Further proof that adults could be pretty thick.

"If she knew my brother and I had horror movie nights she'd blow a gasket. Adults are weird. I mean... the smartest thing I ever heard yet was that Teens aren't rated teen... but then you've got people who think we're gonna be all super cute and goofy and... I dunno." She let her eyes slide over to the other girls backpack, debating how Istas would react if she continued her vent about feeling bubble wrapped.

Hard to tell with the back pack, it made Istas look like she might be the sort of polite, sweet doll type her mom probably would have liked better than Quila was sure she liked her. She'd have to find out.

Istas listened as Quila spoke about the differences between Disney and that TV show. "A lot of things seem rather difficult when they put them on the TV." She popped a pretzel into her mouth as she chewed thoughtfully. "After all dad watches Ice Road Truckers, I wouldn't drive on Ice, it's bad enough to walk on it and find out there's a thin spot."

Between that and Rise of the Guardians she was a little hesitant about walking on ice that wasn't tested to walk on. Istas couldn't help but chuckle though, "I'm sure if my parents wouldn't be happy if they knew I watched monster movies like Frankenstein and the classic Dracula, when I can get a chance, though it's probably much better than watching movies like Saw." She made a face, "I don't know much about them but I caught a glimpse of one while getting some water on Halloween. Mom and Dad were trying to find something good on TV."

Istas didn't particularly care for that sort of movie, and she couldn't help but to smile when Quila said super cute and goofy, "Though sometimes super cute and goofy can be good when you need the upper hand." She placed her chin on her hands.

Quilla snorted, underwhelmed by Istas' choice of what she considered horror movies. "Pft. Nospheratu or nothin' if you want classics." She insisted. Maybe she shouldn't mention having watched Saw, if she thought Dracula was kind of scary. "I don't think those jobs just 'seem' hard, people die doing that kind of stuff." She added, opening her sandwich bag and pulling it out for a bite.

She chewed thoughtfully for a few moments, her thoughts hard to read as they played across her face, and she swallowed before adding with a deep frown.

"....I can't think of anything I want bad enough to let someone think I'm just cute and twee and silly." She admitted. "I want to know I got things without being something I'm not. I don't want to be that way either."

It just wasn't her, and she felt like it was an uphill battle to make people ok with her not wanting to be that way, instead of patting her on the head and noting how 'cute' it was that she was going through a 'phase' where she liked what she liked.

"I'll have to check it out." Istas nodded as she hummed, Dracula probably was more Gothic fiction than horror but at one point it was considered horror.

Istas paused as she looked at Quilla, her face contorted trying to keep from laughing at how stupid that sounded. "Okay, okay. No it's not cute and twee and silly." Istas took another bite from another pretzel.

"I'm talking about when someone decides to pick on someone that looks like me. They wouldn't expect me to be able to take care of myself." Istas smiled and shrugged, "But to each our own, you like your style and I like mine. If we were all the same it'd be kind of dull wouldn't it?"

Istas paused, "Though Pants would be nice right about with how cold it's gotten." She had mostly leggings and well, the school's uniform skirt and socks was so not made for winter.

"Patriarchalal fallafel." Quila noted, a touch loftily, regarding the assumption, though she seemed to realize this was maybe a touch preachy to get a conversion point. "How is looking defenseless going to save you from running into a bunch of Mean Girls who think you're the perfect way to demonstrate how they're "Not like all the other girls"?" She asked, adding slightly vicious air quotes to the last bit.

"...Bullying is shoopy as fargbots... but unless you're Kung Fooing some for trying to stuff you in a trash can... and I would have seen you in detention if that happened. Not lady like and all that honk." She added. "You're a teenager, not a Teen Titan."

She took a bite of her sandwich, starring at Istas with slightly narrowed eyes. She hadn't missed the other girls near laugh.

"The skirts are total Bullwhonk too. We should get pants in the winter. Maybe we should start a petition."

Istas shrugged, she hadn't seen "billy" in a while so perhaps he'd moved on with picking on her. "There's other bullies than those in schools."

She said softly glancing over at the girls that were laughing. She shrugged, "of course a lot of that is probably just shenanigans and parents trying to keep their kids on their best behavior. Still never hurts to know a little self defense just in case right?"

Istas paused and gave a shrug until the talk went to getting a petition for getting pants in the winter. "I agree. It'd be nice to have pants for the winter. I wonder how many would actually sign a petition. I'm sure the boy's would like actual pants too. The sweater's good for fall at least."

Quilla glanced back to Istas backpack, and to her collection of coloring books, all of which stood out distinctly among young teenagers, when many of her class mates were giggling over their copies of magazines like '13' and talking about crushes.

The term she kept coming back to was 'Victim Blaming' but she just couldn't help think how terribly unsurprised she was if Istas was getting bugged for being so... so....

Yeah she'd skipped a year, and yeah she really really wanted to be tolerant of everyone's taste as long as it wasn't hurting people, but the whole bit with the plushies and the pig tails... it was weirdly like sitting across the table from a very large kindergardener and it messed with her head, making it considerably more difficult to talk to Istas about things that would help change their time at this school.

She groaned, trying to flog the doubts out of her head, and peered at Istas with one hand clapped over her other eye.

"I dunno. Depends how many think they're going to get grounded for making waves. Dress codes can be a huge deal with people. Somehow people get from length of your skirt or the color of your shirt to a slip and slide to being a serial killer. Gotta quash those 'immoral impulses'."

Istas' head tilted when she realize she was being looked at with one eye. She paused and sighed, she was starting to realize as she grew older; how hard it was for someone to take her seriously with the pig tails - never thinking that the coloring books and stuffed animals had anything to do with it.

"My parents usually encourage creative thinking, plus it could be spun as keeping us healthy and avoiding winter colds which parents usually approve of highly." Istas was doing the crossword puzzle in the coloring book having decided against asking Quilla if she wanted to do the two person game in the book. "Plus pants don't usually equal immoral, immoral would be more like us asking for short shorts and skirts that showed our 'tushies'." Istas paused and tried not to roll her eyes at the moment's thought of using air quotes. "I mean that would be even colder than the skirts we have now."

"You've never tried to make people change a rule about clothing before have you?" Quila noted, raising an eyebrow, and continuing to peer at Istas from one eye.

"Generaly speaking, it's a parents job to encourage creative thinking. That however is a little different than saying "We think this particular rule is foolish and would like it to change."

Guh. Yes, Istas, she bowed to your superior paren... oh wait. She got the same spiel from her mom when she was five.

"I'm gonna go jot down some ideas in my notebook, and work on some counter arguments for why telling us to just put on some wool socks and snow pants is lamesauce, because that's what's going to happen. Also... butt's aren't immoral. Wearing a short skirt, or no skirt, or coming to school in my underpants? It would get me kicked out, but it wouldn't make me a bad person. That's an totally Dipwonked thing to say. Clothing is clothing, it's not a morality thermometer."

She waved a dismissive hand at the coloring book and it's simple crossword as she stood up. A sort of... vague... not really thank you, but an acknowledgement that it had been offered at all, and declined silently.

"Later, Curly."

Istas paused, "Not really - but I'm sure it's not that bad." She smiled in her forever optimistic way. "I suppose so, I guess we'll see if the petition goes around then won't we?" There was another smile as she nodded.

Of course Quila seemd to have the right idea in writing down ideas and counter arguments. The pre-teen nodded and waved. "Later!"
